¹ Now in the church that was at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

¹ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, ² and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist, he has risen from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him." ³ For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, ⁴ because John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." ⁵ And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. ⁶ But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod, ⁷ so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. ⁸ Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." ⁹ And the king was sorry; but, because of his oaths and his guests, he commanded it to be given to her; ¹⁰ so he sent and had John beheaded in prison.

¹ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

¹⁹ But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the other evil things Herod had done, ²⁰ added this to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

³¹ At that very time some Pharisees came, and said to him, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." ³² And he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course.'

⁷ And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who also was in Jerusalem at that time. ⁸ Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had desired to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by him. ⁹ Then he questioned him with many words, but he gave him no answer. ¹⁰ The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. ¹¹ And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then, dressing him in a gorgeous robe, he sent him back to Pilate.

³⁶ Thus Josnt who was called by the apostles Barnabas (which means, Son of Encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,

¹ Saul was consenting to his death. And on that day a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the region of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. ² Devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him. ³ But Saul began ravaging the church, and, entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison.

¹ Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,

¹⁹ Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. ²⁰ But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus.

²² News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. ²³ When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts; ²⁴ for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great number of people were brought to the Lord. ²⁵ So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; ²⁶ and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year they met with the church and taught great numbers of people; and the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. ²⁷ Now at this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

³⁰ And this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

²⁵ And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their mission, taking along with them John, who was also called Mark.

⁹ But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him

²⁶ From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had completed. ²⁷ When they arrived, they gathered the church together and declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

³² And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged the brethren with many words and strengthened them.

³⁵ But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

⁶ And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

⁹ He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.

⁶ Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; ⁷ if service, let us use it in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching;

²¹ Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you, as do Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen.

⁶ Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living?

²⁸ And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then those having gifts of healings, helps, administrations, and those speaking in various kinds of tongues. ²⁹ Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?

²⁴ But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all; ²⁵ the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so, he will fall on his face, and worship God, declaring that God is really among you.

⁹ and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

¹³ The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

¹¹ And he gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,

²² All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar's household.

²⁰ do not despise prophecies.
