Judges 12:1-6

VIN(i) 1 The men of Ephraim were ready for battle. They crossed the Jordan River to Zaphon and said to Jephthah: "Why did you cross the border to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We are going to burn the house down over your head!" 2 Jephthah said to them, I and my people were at great strife with the Ammonites and when I called you, you didn't save me out of their hand. 3 When I saw that you wouldn't be delivering me, I took my own life in my hands, crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my control. So why have you come here today to fight me?" 4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim, and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim because they said, You Gileadites are renegades of Ephraim from Ephraim and Manasseh. 5 Then Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan from Ephraim, and whenever a fugitive of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" When he said, "No," 6 they would tell him to say "Shibboleth." But he would say "Sibboleth," because he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they would kill him at the Jordan River crossing. Forty-two thousand of the Ephraimites were killed.
