8 But Abner the son of Ner, the commander of Saul's army, had taken Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.
9 Abner made him king of Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin, that is, all Israel.
10 Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul was forty years old when he became king over Israel and he reigned two years; however, the house of Judah followed David.
11 The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 And Abner son of Ner goeth out, and servants of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 Joab the son of Zeruiah and David's servants went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
14 Abner said to Joab, "Let's have the young men get up and fight in our presence." Joab replied, "Let them come."
15 So they got up and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth and twelve of the servants of David.
16 They each caught his opponent by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: therefore that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim.
17 And the battle that day was very severe; and Abner and the men of Israel were routed before the servants of David.
18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai and Asahel: and Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle.
19 and followed after Abner and turned neither to the righthand nor to the left from Abner.
20 When Abner looked behind him, he said, "Is that you, Asahel?" He answered, "I am."
21 Then Abenner said to him, Turn thee to the right, or to the left, and lay hold on one of the young men, and take his armour. But Asael would not turn aside from following him.
22 so Abner told Asahel again, "Stop following me. Why should I strike you down? How could I show my face to your brother Joab?"
23 But he would not desist. So Abenner smote him with a back stroke of his spear, into the loin, and the spear passed quite through him, and he fell there and died under him. And every one who came to the place where Asael fell and died, stood still.
24 And Joab and Abishai ran after Abner, and the sun was setting. And they came to the hill of Ammah which is before Giah, by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 The men of Benjamin rallied behind Abner. They became united as one and stood on the top of a hill.
26 Then Abner called out to Joab, "Must the battle sword keep on devouring forever? Don't you realize that the end result is bitterness? How long will it take for you to order your army to stop pursuing their own relatives?"
27 Joab said: "As God lives; if you had not spoken the men would have continued following their brothers."
28 So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued Israel no more, and they fought no more.
29 And all that night Abner and his men went through the Arabah; they went over Jordan and through all Bithron and came to Mahanaim.
30 And Joab returned from pursuing Abner. And he gathered all the people. And there were lacking nineteen men of David's servants, and Asahel.
31 But David's men had put to death three hundred and sixty of the men of Benjamin and of Abner's men
32 They buried Asahel in his father's tomb in Bethlehem. Joab and his men marched all night. They arrived at Hebron at daybreak.
