¹ It is certain, if any one is desirous of the episcopal office, he desireth a good work. ² A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, sober, prudent, grave, ³ hospitable, able to teach, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of sordid gain, moderate, not quarrelsome, ⁴ not covetous, governing his own family well, having his children in subjection with all gravity; ⁵ (for if any one know not how to govern his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) ⁶ not one newly converted, least being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil. ⁷ He ought also to have an honorable testimony from those that are without, least he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. ⁸ The deacons should likewise be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of base gain, ⁹ holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. ¹⁰ (And let these also first be proved, then let them take the office of deacons, if they be found blameless.) ¹¹ And their wives likewise grave, not slanderers, sober, and faithful in all things. ¹² Let the deacons too be husbands of one wife only, governing their children and their own houses well. ¹³ For they, that discharge the office of a deacon well, gain to themselves a good degree of honor, and much freedom in promoting the faith that is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁴ These things I write unto thee, hoping to come to thee shortly. ¹⁵ But if I should be retarded, that thou mayst know how thou oughtest to behave in the house of God, the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. ¹⁶ And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, and received up into glory.

⁴² And the Lord said, Who is indeed that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his family to give out the measure of food in due season? ⁴³ Happy is that servant, whom his lord, when he cometh, shall find so doing. ⁴⁴ Verily I tell you, that he will set him over all that he hath. ⁴⁵ But if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and begin to beat the men and maid-servants, and drink, and to be drunken: ⁴⁶ the lord of that servant will come on a day in which he does not expect him, and at a time which he is not aware of; and will cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the unfaithful.

¹⁰ Thus, I tell you, there is joy among the angels of God over one repenting sinner.

¹⁰ He, that is faithful in the lest, is faithful also in much: and he, that is unjust in the lest, is unjust also in much. ¹¹ If therefore ye have not been faithful in the false riches, who will intrust you with the true? ¹² and if ye have not been faithful in that which was another's, who will give you that which is your own?

¹⁷ And he said to him, Well done, thou good servant, as thou hast been faithful in a very little, thou shalt be governor over ten cities.

³⁴ Take heed to yourselves, least at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and the cares of life, and so that day should come upon you unawares: ³⁵ for as a snare shall it come upon all that dwell on the face of the whole earth. ³⁶ Watch therefore and be constant in prayer, that ye may be counted worthy to escape all these things, which shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

And they made a calf in those days, ⁴¹ and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. ⁴² Then God turned away, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets, "O house of Israel, did ye offer to me your victims and sacrifices, for the space of forty years in the wilderness? ⁴³ yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them by: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon." ⁴⁴ The tabernacle of witness was among our fathers in the wilderness, as He, that spake unto Moses, ordered him to make it according to the model which he had seen in the mount: ⁴⁵ and which our fathers receiving, they with Joshua, brought into the territory of the nations, whom God drove out from before the face of our fathers, till the days of David, who found favor in the sight of God, ⁴⁶ and was desirous to provide an habitation for the God of Jacob. ⁴⁷ But Solomon built Him an house. ⁴⁸ Though the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands, as the prophet saith, ⁴⁹ "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what house will ye build for me, saith the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? ⁵⁰ hath not my hand made all these things?" --- ⁵¹ Ye stiff-necked, and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye. ⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and slew those who prophesied concerning the coming of that righteous One, of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers; ⁵³ who received the law by the ministration of angels, and yet have not kept it.

⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas boldly said, It was necessary that the word of God should be first spoken to you; but since ye reject it, and judge not yourselves worthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles: ⁴⁷ for so the Lord hath commanded us, saying, "I have appointed thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation to the utmost part of the earth." ⁴⁸ And when the Gentiles heard this, they rejoiced and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were determined for eternal life believed.

¹⁵ crying out, and saying, "Sirs, why do ye these things? we also are men subject to the like infirmities with you, and we preach the gospel unto you, that ye may turn from these vanities to the living God, who made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea,

⁸ who will also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ;

⁷ But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, that hidden wisdom which God ordained before the worlds for our glory:

¹ And I, my brethren, could not speak to you, as to spiritual persons, but as to carnal ones, even as to babes in Christ.

⁶ These things, my brethren, I have by a figure transferred to myself, and Apollos, for your sakes, that ye may learn in us not to be wise above what is written, that ye may not be puffed up for one against another. ⁷ For who maketh thee to differ? and what hast thou, which thou didst not receive? And if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory as if thou hadst not received it? ⁸ Ye are now full, ye are now rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I wish ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.

¹² For what have I to do to judge those that are without? and do not ye judge those that are within?

¹ Now as to things offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge about them. Knowledge however puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

³² Behave inoffensively both to the Jews, and to the Greeks, and to the church of God.

³⁴ and if any one be hungry, let him eat at home, that ye may not come together to your condemnation. And as to other things, I will set them in order when I come.

⁵ I will come to you, when I have passed through Macedonia; for I am to pass through Macedonia. ⁶ And perhaps I shall stay a while, or even pass the winter with you; that ye may forward me on my journey, whithersoever I go. ⁷ For I do not intend to see you now in my way, as I hope to stay some time with you, if the Lord permit.

¹⁵ I beseech you, brethren, (for ye know the family of Stephanas, that they are the first-fruits of Achaia, and

³ being manifest that ye are the epistle of Christ, through our ministration, written not with ink, but by the Spirit of the living God; not on tables of stone, but on tables of the heart of flesh.

³ We give no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:

⁷ by love unfeigned, by the word of truth, by the power of God, with the armour of righteousness on the right and on the left; through honor and dishonor,

¹⁶ and what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God: as God hath said, "I will dwell in them, and I will walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."

²¹ looking to things that are right not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

⁷ And least I should be too much lifted up with the abundance of the revelations, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, least I should be too much elevated.

⁸ (for He who wrought effectually in Peter as to the apostleship of the circumcision, wrought effectually also in me as to the gentiles:) ⁹ and knowing the grace which was given to me; James, and Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars of the church, gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go to the gentiles, and they to the circumcision.

¹ O senseless Galatians, who hath so bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth? you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth as crucified.

⁴ but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son born of a woman made under the law,

⁹ having made known to us the secret of his will, according to his good pleasure, which He had before purposed in Himself:

²² and hath put all things under his feet, and given Him to be head over all things to the church;

³ that by immediate revelation He made known to me the mystery, (as I wrote before in brief, by which, ⁴ when ye read it, ye may perceive my knowledge in the mystery of Christ,) ⁵ which in other generations was not made known to men, as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; that the Gentiles should be co-heirs, ⁶ and of the same body, and joint-partakers of his promise in Christ, by the gospel: ⁷ of which I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God conferred on me by the effectual operation of his power. ⁸ On me, who am less than the least of all saints, was this grace bestowed, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, ⁹ and make all men to see the communication of the mystery, which from the ages past hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ; ¹⁰ that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly regions;
