¹⁶ to whom I made answer, It is not a custom with Romans to grant as a favor any man, before the accused has the accuser face to face, and has opportunity to answer for himself concerning the charge laid against him.

³ My defense to those examining me is this.

¹¹ For, behold this very thing—that ye were made sorry after a godly manner—what diligence it wrought in you; yea, what defense of yourselves; yea, what indignation; yea, what fear; yea what earnest desire; yea, what zeal; yea, what avenging! In everything ye proved yourselves to be pure in the matter.

⁷ even as it is right for me to think this in behalf of you all; because ye have me in your heart, both in my bonds and in the defense and confirmation of the Gospel, all of you being partakers with me of the grace.

¹⁷ but the other proclaim Christ of contention, not sincerely, thinking to add tribulation to my bonds.

¹⁵ You know this, that all in Asia turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

¹⁰ for Demas forsook me, having loved this present age, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens, to Galatia; Titus, to Dalmatia.

¹⁵ but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts; ready always for an answer to every one who asks of you an account concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear;
