³² Why? Because they did not try through faith but through what they could do. They have stumbled over the stone that causes people to stumble,

⁵⁷ And so they found a cause for stumbling over Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet never fails to be honored except in his native neighborhood and in his own home." And so

¹⁶ And a man came up to Him and asked, "What is there good that I can do to possess eternal life?" ¹⁷ And He answered him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only One who is perfectly good. But if you want to get into that life, you must practice keeping the commandments." ¹⁸ He asked Him, "What sort of commandments?" Jesus answered, "You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not lie, ¹⁹ You must practice honoring your father and mother. And you must love your neighbor as you do yourself." ²⁰ The young man said, "I have kept all these commandments; what more do I lack?"

³⁴ Then Symeon gave them his blessing, and said to Mary, the child's mother, "This child is destined to bring the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign continuously disputed --

²³ And happy is the man who finds no cause for stumbling over me."

²⁷ Stop toiling for the food that perishes, but toil for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, for God the Father has given Him authority to do so." ²⁸ Then they asked Him, "What must we do to perform the works that God demands?" ²⁹ Jesus answered them, "The work that God demands of you is this, to believe in the messenger whom He has sent."

³⁰ After leading them out of the jail, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" ³¹ They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you and your household will be saved." ³² Then they told God's message to him and to all the members of his household. ³³ Even at that time of the night he took them and washed their wounds, and he and all the members of his household at once were baptized. ³⁴ Then he took them up to his house and gave them food, and he and all the members of his household were happy in their faith in God.

¹⁶ So it is conditioned on faith, that it might be in accordance with God's unmerited favor, so that the promise might be in force for all the descendants of Abraham, not only for those who belong to the law party but also for those who belong to the faith group of Abraham. He is the father of us all,

³ For they were ignorant of God's way of right standing and were trying to set up one of their own, and so would not surrender to God's way of right standing.

¹¹ I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall in utter ruin, did they? Of course not! On the contrary, because of their stumbling, salvation has come to heathen peoples, to make the Israelites jealous.

²³ we are preaching the Christ who was crucified -- a message that is a trap-stick to the Jews and nonsense to the Greeks,

⁸ and: "A stone for them to stumble over and a rock to trip them up." They keep on stumbling over the message, because they are disobedient to it, and this is their appointed doom.

⁹ If we accept the testimony of men, the testimony of God is stronger still; because this is the testimony that God has borne to His Son. ¹⁰ Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his own heart. Whoever does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has borne to His Son. ¹¹ And this testimony is that God has given us eternal life, and this life is given through union with His Son. ¹² Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son does not have life.
