⁹ At that time they will turn you over to torture, and will murder you, and you will be hated by all the heathen, because you bear my name.

¹⁷ Be on your guard against men, for they will turn you over to the courts and will flog you in their synagogues, ¹⁸ and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness to them and the heathen. ¹⁹ But when they turn you over to the courts, you must not worry at all about how or what you ought to speak, for it will be given you at that hour what you ought to speak. ²⁰ For it is not you who are speaking, but the Spirit of your Father that is speaking through you. ²¹ One brother will turn another over to death, and a father his child, and children will take a stand against their parents, and will have them put to death. ²² And you will be hated by all men, because you bear my name, but whoever bears up to the end will be saved.

⁶ and the rest seized his slaves, treated them with violence, and murdered them.

³⁴ Therefore, I am going to send you prophets, wise men, and scribes, some of whom you will kill -- even crucify -- and some you will flog in your synagogues and chase from city to city,

⁹ So you must be on the lookout for yourselves; they will turn you over to courts, and to synagogues where you will be beaten, and you must appear before governors and kings for my sake, to testify to them. ¹⁰ But before the end comes, the good news must be proclaimed to all the heathen. ¹¹ Now when they take you to court for trial, do not be worrying beforehand about what you should say, but say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you that will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit. ¹² One brother will turn another over to death, and a father his child, and children will take a stand against their parents and have them put to death. ¹³ You will be hated by everybody, because you bear my name. But whoever bears up to the end will be saved.

⁴⁹ This is why the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute';

¹² But before all this takes place, people will arrest you and persecute you, and turn you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake.

¹⁶ Yes, you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and they will put some of you to death, ¹⁷ and you will be continuously hated by everyone, because you bear my name.

¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, the world would love what is its own. But it is because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, that the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember what I once told you: No slave is greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you too. If they have observed my teaching, they will observe yours too.

² Men will turn you out of their synagogues. Yes, indeed, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think that he is rendering a religious service to God.

² because they were very much disturbed over their continuing to teach the people and to declare in the case of Jesus the resurrection from the dead. ³ So they arrested them and put them into prison until next morning, for it was already evening.

⁴⁰ They were convinced by him, and after calling the apostles in and having them flogged, they charged them to stop speaking on the authority of Jesus, and then turned them loose. ⁴¹ So they went out from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer disgrace for Jesus' name;

⁵⁹ They continued stoning Stephen as he continued praying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!"

¹ About that time Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, in order to do them violence. ² He had James the brother of John murdered with a sword, ³ and when he saw that this was agreeable to the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter too -- it was at the time of the feast of Unleavened Bread. ⁴ He had him seized and put into prison, and turned him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, planning after the Passover to bring him out again to the people. ⁵ So Peter was being kept in prison, but earnest prayer to God for him was persistently made by the church.

³¹ Now while they were trying to kill him, news reached the colonel of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in a ferment. ³² So he at once got together some soldiers and captains and hurried down against them, but as soon as they saw the colonel and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

¹⁹ So I said, 'Lord, they know for themselves that from one synagogue to another I used to imprison and flog those who believed in you, ²⁰ and when the blood of your martyr Stephen was being shed, I stood by and approved it, and held the clothes of those who killed him.' ²¹ Then He said to me, 'Go, because I am to send you out and far away among the heathen.'" ²² They listened to him until he said this, and then all at once they shouted, "Away with such a fellow from the earth! He is certainly not fit to live!"

²² But we think it fitting to let you tell us what your views are, for as to this sect it is known by all of us that it is everywhere denounced."

¹⁴ For you, brothers, followed the example of God's churches in Judea that are in union with Christ Jesus, for you too have suffered the same sort of ill-treatment at the hands of your fellow-countrymen as they did at the hands of the Jews, ¹⁵ who killed the Lord Jesus and persecuted the prophets and us; and who continue to displease God and show themselves in opposition to all mankind, ¹⁶ by trying to keep us from speaking to the heathen, so that they may be saved, so as always to fill to the brim the cup of their sins. But at last God's wrath has come upon them.

¹⁶ but if anyone suffers for being a Christian, he must not be ashamed of it, but should keep on praising God for bearing this name.

¹⁰ Do not be so afraid of what you are to suffer. See! The devil is going to throw some of you into prison to be tested there and for ten days to suffer pressing troubles. Each one of you must prove to be faithful, even if you have to die, and I will give you the crown of life.

¹³ "I know where you live, where Satan has his throne. Yet you are clinging to my name and have never renounced your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful martyred witness, who was put to death among you, right where Satan lives,

⁹ When He broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered for being faithful to God's message and for the testimony they bore to it. ¹⁰ Then in a loud voice they cried out, "Holy and true Master, how long will you refrain from charging and avenging our blood upon the inhabitants of the earth?" ¹¹ Then a white robe was given to each of them, and they were told to keep quiet a little while longer, until the number of their fellow-slaves and brothers, who were killed as they had been, was complete.

¹⁴ I answered him, "You know, my lord." He said to me: "These are the people who are coming through the great persecution, who have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
