¹⁰ Then many will fall by the way, and will betray one another and hate one another.

²¹ One brother will turn another over to death, and a father his child, and children will take a stand against their parents, and will have them put to death.

³⁵ For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, ³⁶ and a man's enemies will be members of his own family.

⁶ And happy is the man who finds no cause for stumbling over me."

²¹ but it takes no real root in him, and he lasts only a little while, and just as soon as suffering and persecution come for the truth's sake, he at once yields and falls.

⁵⁷ And so they found a cause for stumbling over Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet never fails to be honored except in his native neighborhood and in his own home." And so

²¹ And while they were eating, He said, "I solemnly say to you, one of you is going to betray me." ²² They were cut to the bottom of their hearts, and began to ask one by one, "It cannot be I, can it, Lord?" ²³ He answered, "The man who has just dipped his hand with me in the dish is the man who is going to betray me. ²⁴ The Son of Man is going away as the Scriptures say of Him, but a curse will be on that man by whom He is betrayed. It would have been better for that man, if he had never been born!"

³¹ Then Jesus said to them, "You will all stumble over me tonight, for the Scripture says, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' ³² But after I am raised from the dead, I will go back to Galilee to meet you." ³³ Peter answered, "Though all the rest of them stumble over you, I will never do so." ³⁴ Jesus said to him, "I solemnly say to you, this very night, before a cock crows, you will disown me three times."

¹⁷ but it does not take real root in them, and so they last only a little while; then when trouble or persecution comes on account of the truth, they at once fall by the way.

⁶⁰ So many of His disciples, when they heard it, said, "This teaching is hard to take in. Who can listen to it?" ⁶¹ But as Jesus naturally knew that His disciples were grumbling about this, He said to them, "Is this shocking to you?

⁶⁶ As a result of this many of His disciples turned their backs on Him and stopped accompanying Him. ⁶⁷ So Jesus said to the Twelve, "You too do not want to go back, do you?"
