⁴⁸ He is like a man who was building a house, who dug deep, and laid its foundation upon the rock; and when a flood came, the torrent burst upon that house but it could not shake it, because it was well built.

²⁵ And the rain fell, and the rivers rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, but it did not fall, for its pillars had been laid on a rocky foundation. ²⁶ And anyone who listens to my words and does not practice their teaching, will be like an imprudent man who built his house on sand.

³³ I have told you these things, that you through union with me may have peace. In the world you have trouble, but be courageous! I have conquered the world."

²² strengthening the hearts of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith, and warning them that it is through enduring many hardships that we must get into the kingdom of God.

³⁵ Who can separate us from Christ's love? Can suffering or misfortune or persecution or hunger or destitution or danger or the sword? ³⁶ As the Scripture says: "For your sake we are being put to death the livelong day; we are treated like sheep to be slaughtered." ³⁷ And yet in all these things we keep on gloriously conquering through Him who loved us. ³⁸ For I have full assurance that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor the present nor the future

¹⁰ As a skilled architect, in accordance with God's unmerited favor given to me, I laid a foundation, and now another is building upon it. But every builder must be careful how he builds upon it; ¹¹ for no one can lay any other foundation than the one that is laid, that is, Jesus Christ Himself. ¹² And whether one puts into the building on the foundation gold or silver or costly stones, or wood or hay or straw, ¹³ the character of each one's work will come to light, for the judgment day will show it up. This is so, because that day will show itself in fire, and the fire will test the character of each one's work. ¹⁴ If the structure which one builds upon it stands the test, he will get his pay. ¹⁵ If the structure which one builds is burned up, he will get no pay; and yet he himself will be saved, but just as one who goes through a fire.

⁵⁵ O Death, where is your victory now? O Death, where is your sting?" ⁵⁶ Now sin gives death its sting, and the law gives sin its power. ⁵⁷ But thank God! He gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁵⁸ So, my dear brothers, continue to be firm, incapable of being moved, always letting the cup run over in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the service of the Lord is never thrown away.

²⁰ for you are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself the cornerstone.

¹⁹ But God's foundation stands unshaken, with these inscriptions: "The Lord knows the people who belong to Him" and "Everyone who bears the name of the Lord must abstain from evil."

⁴ Keep on coming to Him, as to a living stone, rejected by men but chosen by God and precious in His sight, ⁵ and keep on building yourselves up, as living stones, into a spiritual house for a consecrated priesthood, to offer up, through Jesus Christ, spiritual sacrifices that will be acceptable to God. ⁶ It must be so, because the Scriptures say: "Here now I lay in Zion a chosen stone, a costly cornerstone, And not a single one who puts his trust in Him will ever be put to shame."

¹⁰ Therefore, brothers, be all the more in earnest to make certain to yourselves God's call and choice of you. For if you cultivate these qualities, you will never slip,

¹⁰ The day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a roar, the heavenly bodies will be destroyed by being burned up, and the earth with all its works will melt away. ¹¹ If all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what men you ought to be! What holy and pious lives you ought to lead, ¹² since you are awaiting and hastening the coming of the day of God, which will cause the heavens to blaze and dissolve and the heavenly bodies to burn up and melt away! ¹³ In accordance with His promise we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which uprightness will have its permanent home. ¹⁴ Therefore, dearly beloved, since you are expecting this, be in earnest to be found by Him without a blot, without reproach, and at peace.

²⁸ And now, dear children, I repeat, you must continue to live in union with Him, so that if He is unveiled, we may have unshaken confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame when He comes.

²⁴ Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to make you stand in His glorious presence faultless and full of triumphant joy,

¹⁴ The sky was swept away just like a scroll that is rolled up; and every mountain and island was moved out of its place. ¹⁵ The kings of the earth, the great men, the military leaders, the rich, the mighty -- everybody, whether slaves or free hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. ¹⁶ And they said to the mountains and the rocks: "Fall on us and conceal us from the sight of Him who is seated on the throne, and from the anger of the Lamb, ¹⁷ because the great day of their anger has come, and who can stand it?"

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne and Him who was seated on it, from whose presence earth and sky fled away, no more to be found. ¹² I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened; it was the book of life, And the dead were judged by what was written in the books in accordance with what they had done. ¹³ The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and the underworld gave up the dead that were in them, and they were all judged in accordance with what they had done. ¹⁴ Then death and the underworld were hurled into the fiery lake, This is the second death -- the fiery lake. ¹⁵ If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was hurled into the fiery lake.
