⁵² For from now on, five in a house will be divided, three against two, and two against three.

⁴¹ Others said, "This is the Christ." But still others said, "The Christ does not come from Galilee, does He? ⁴² Do not the Scriptures say that the Christ is to spring from David and to come from the village of Bethlehem where David lived?" ⁴³ So the people were divided because of Him,

¹⁶ Then some of the Pharisees said, "This man does not come from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a sinful man perform such wonder- works?" So there was a difference of opinion among them.

¹⁹ These words again led to a difference of opinion among the Jews. ²⁰ Many of them said, "He is under the power of a demon and is going crazy. Why are you listening to Him?" ²¹ Others said, "These are not the words of a man who is under the power of a demon. A demon cannot make the eyes of the blind see, can he?"

¹⁸ If the world continues to hate you, remember that it has first hated me. ¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, the world would love what is its own. But it is because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, that the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember what I once told you: No slave is greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you too. If they have observed my teaching, they will observe yours too. ²¹ They will do all this to you on account of me, because they do not know Him who has sent me.

² Men will turn you out of their synagogues. Yes, indeed, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think that he is rendering a religious service to God.

⁴³ and after the congregation had broken up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism allied themselves with Paul and Barnabas, and they kept talking to them and urging them to continue to rely on the unmerited favor of God. ⁴⁴ The next sabbath almost the whole town turned out to hear God's message. ⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were completely overcome by their jealousy and began to contradict the statements made by Paul, and even to abuse him. ⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas courageously spoke out, "God's message had to be spoken to you Jews first, but since you continue to thrust it from you and since you show yourselves unworthy to receive eternal life, now and here we turn to the heathen.

¹ At Iconium too they went to the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks came to believe. ² But the Jews who refused to accept their message aroused and exasperated the minds of the heathen against the brothers. ³ In spite of this, however, they stayed there a considerable time and continued to speak with courage from the Lord, who continued to bear testimony to His gracious message and kept on granting signs and wonders to be done by them. ⁴ But the masses of the town were divided; some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles.

²⁴ Some of them were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.
