¹ Now the Spirit distinctly declares that in later times some will turn away from the faith, because they continuously give their attention to deceiving spirits and the things that demons teach

⁵ for many will come bearing the name of the Messiah, and saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many people. ⁶ You are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars; take care not to be scared out of your wits. They have to come, but that is not the end yet. ⁷ For nation will go to war with nation, and kingdom with kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in many places. ⁸ But all this is but the beginning of the agonies. ⁹ At that time they will turn you over to torture, and will murder you, and you will be hated by all the heathen, because you bear my name. ¹⁰ Then many will fall by the way, and will betray one another and hate one another. ¹¹ Many false prophets will appear and mislead many people; ¹² and because of the increasing crime wave, most people's love will grow cold.

¹³ But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into the whole truth, for He will not speak on His own authority but will tell what is told Him, and will announce to you the things that are to come.

² While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul, for the work to which I have called them."

¹⁸ Some of the Epicurean and the Stoic philosophers began to debate with him; and some said, "What is this scraps-of-truth-picker trying to say?" Others said, "He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities." They said so because he was telling the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.

²⁵ Because they could not agree among themselves, they started to leave, when Paul had spoken one word more: "The Holy Spirit beautifully expressed it in speaking to your forefathers through the prophet Isaiah:

⁵ For even if there are so-called gods in heaven or on earth -- as there are, indeed, a vast number of gods and lords -- ⁶ yet for us there is but one God, the Father, who is the source of all things and the goal of our living, and but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom everything was made and through whom we live.

²⁰ I mean that what the heathen sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be in fellowship with demons.

¹¹ But the one and same Spirit accomplishes all these achievements, and apportions power to each of us as He chooses.

³ But I am apprehensive that, somehow or other, as the serpent by his cunning deceived Eve, your thoughts may be turned aside from single-hearted devotion to Christ.

¹³ For such men are sham apostles, dishonest workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And no wonder, for even Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. ¹⁵ So it is no surprise if his servants also masquerade as ministers for doing right, whose doom shall be in accordance with what they do.

¹⁸ Stop letting anyone, in gratuitous humility and worship of angels, defraud you as an umpire, for such a one is taking his stand on the mere visions he has seen, and is groundlessly conceited over his sensuous mind.

³ Do not let anybody at all deceive you about this, because that cannot take place until the great revolt occurs and the representative of lawlessness is uncovered, the one who is doomed to destruction, ⁴ the one who keeps up his opposition and so far exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, that he actually takes his seat in the sanctuary of God, proclaiming himself to be God. ⁵ Do you not remember that while I was with you I used to tell you this? ⁶ So now you know the power that is holding him back, that he is to be unveiled at His own appointed time. ⁷ For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work, but only until he who is holding it back has been gotten out of the way. ⁸ Then the representative of lawlessness will be uncovered, and the Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of His mouth and put a stop to his operations by His appearance and coming; ⁹ that is, the representative of lawlessness, whose coming is in accordance with the working of Satan, with his plenitude of power and pretended signs and wonders, ¹⁰ and with a completely wicked deception for men who are on the way to destruction, because they refused to love the truth so as to be saved. ¹¹ This is why God sends them a misleading influence till they actually believe what is false, ¹² so that all who have refused to believe the truth but have chosen unrighteousness instead might be condemned.

¹ Now you must know that in the last days there are going to be hard times. ² For people will be selfish, avaricious, boastful, haughty, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, irreverent, ³ lacking in love for kinsmen, irreconcilable, slanderers, having no self-control, savage, lacking in love for the good, ⁴ treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure more than God, ⁵ keeping up the forms of religion but not giving expression to its power. Avoid such people. ⁶ For some of them practice going into people's houses and capturing weak and silly women who are overwhelmed with the weight of their sins, who are easily led about by all sorts of evil impulses, ⁷ who are always trying to learn but never able to come to a full knowledge of the truth. ⁸ Just as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, these people resist the truth, for they are depraved in mind and so counterfeits in the faith. ⁹ But they will not make any more progress, for their folly will be evident to everybody, as theirs was.

¹³ But bad men and imposters will go on from bad to worse, misleading others and misled themselves.

⁴ and they will cease to listen to the truth and will turn to listen to myths.

²⁰ who was foreordained for it before the foundation of the world but was brought out to public view at the end of the ages, for the sake of you

¹ Now there were false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you too, who will insidiously introduce destructive heresies and deny the Master who has bought them, thus bringing on themselves swift destruction.

³ First of all, you must understand this, that in the last days mockers will come with their mockeries, living in accordance with their evil passions,

¹⁸ Little children, it is the last hour, just as you have heard that Antichrist is Coming, and already many Antichrists have appeared; so we may be sure that it is the last hour.

⁶ We are children of God. Whoever knows God by experience listens to us; whoever is not a child of God does not listen to us. This is the way to distinguish a true spiritual utterance from one that is false.

⁴ For certain persons have sneaked in -- their doom was written down long ago -- godless persons, who turn the favor of our God into an excuse for licentiousness, and disown our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

¹⁸ because they said to you, "In the last times there will be mockers who will live to satisfy their own godless passions."

⁷ Let everyone who has ears listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. I will give to him who conquers the privilege of eating the fruit of the tree of life that stands in the paradise of God."'"

² and he opened the pit of the abyss, and smoke like the smoke of a huge furnace puffed up out of the pit, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the pit. ³ Out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, but the power that was given to them was like the power of earthly scorpions. ⁴ They were told not to injure the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only the people who did not have the mark of God's seal on their foreheads. ⁵ They were not permitted to kill them, but only to torture them for five months, and the torture they inflicted was like the torture of a scorpion when it stings a man. ⁶ In those days people will look for death but will not find it, they will long to die but death will flee from them. ⁷ The locusts look like horses armed for battle; on their heads were what appeared to be crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces; ⁸ they had hair that looked like women's hair; their teeth were like lions' teeth; ⁹ they had breastplates that seemed to be made of steel; the noise of their wings was like the noise of vast numbers of chariots and horses rushing into battle; ¹⁰ they had tails like scorpions with stings in them, so in their tails their power lay to injure men for five months. ¹¹ They had over them as king the angel of the abyss; in Hebrew he is called Abaddon, in Greek, Apollyon.

²⁰ But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works their hands had done, so as to give up worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot either see or hear or move;

¹⁴ He leads the inhabitants of the earth astray because of the wonders he is permitted to perform in the presence of the wild beast, telling the inhabitants of the earth to erect a statue to the wild beast that bears the sword-thrust and yet has lived.

¹⁴ They are the spirits of demons that perform wonders, and they go forth to the kings of the whole world, to muster them for battle on the great day of the Almighty God.

² He shouted with a mighty voice: "She has fallen! Mighty Babylon has fallen! She has become a den for demons, a dungeon for every foul spirit and every unclean and loathsome bird,

²³ the light of the lamp will never shine in you again; the voice of bride and bridegroom will never be heard in you again. For your businessmen were the great men of the earth; by your magic all the nations have been led astray;

²⁰ Then the wild beast was captured and with him the false prophet who performed wonders in his presence, by which he led astray those who let the mark of the wild beast be put on them and worshiped his statue. Both of them were hurled alive into the fiery lake that burns with brimstone.

² He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. ³ Then he hurled him into the abyss, closed it, and sealed it over him, to keep him from leading the nations astray anymore, until the thousand years are at an end; after that he must be let loose a little while.

⁸ He will go forth to lead astray the nations that are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, and to muster them for battle, and their number will be like the sands of the seashore.

¹⁰ Then the devil who led them astray was hurled into the fiery lake of burning brimstone, where the wild beast and false prophet were, and there they are to be tortured day and night forever and ever.
