¹⁹ For it is pleasing in the sight of God for one to bear his sorrows though suffering innocently.

¹⁰ "Blessed are those who suffer persecution for being and doing right, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. ¹¹ "Blessed are you when people abuse you, and persecute you, and keep on falsely telling all sorts of evil against you for my sake. ¹² Keep on rejoicing and leaping for ecstasy, for your reward will be rich in heaven; for this is the way they persecuted the prophets who lived before you.

³² Now if you practice loving only those who love you, what credit do you get for that? Why, even notorious sinners practice loving those who love them.

²¹ They will do all this to you on account of me, because they do not know Him who has sent me.

²³ When he reached there and saw the spiritual blessing God had given them, he was delighted, and continuously encouraged them all with hearty purpose to continue to be devoted to the Lord;

⁵ Therefore, you must obey them, not only for the sake of escaping punishment, but also for conscience' sake;

¹⁰ But by God's unmerited favor I have become what I am, and His unmerited favor shown to me was not bestowed for nothing, for I have toiled more extensively than any of them, and yet it was not I but God's unmerited favor working with me.

¹² For my boast is this, to which my conscience testifies, that before the world, but especially before you, I have acted from pure motives and in sincerity before God, not depending on worldly wisdom but on God's unmerited favor.

¹ Now I am going to tell you, brothers, of God's spiritual blessing which was given in the churches of Macedonia,

¹² This is why I am suffering so, but I am not ashamed of it, for I know whom I have trusted and I am absolutely sure that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

²⁰ For what credit is it to bear it patiently, if you do wrong and are beaten for it? But if you do right and patiently suffer for it, it is pleasing in the sight of God.

¹⁴ Instead, you are happy, even if you should suffer for doing right. Never be afraid of their threats, and never be disturbed, ¹⁵ but in your hearts be consecrated to Christ as Lord, and always be ready to make your defense to anyone who asks a reason for the hope you have. But you must do it in gentleness and reverence, ¹⁶ and keep your conscience clear, so that those who bitterly abuse your excellent conduct as Christians may be ashamed of slandering you. ¹⁷ For it is better, if the will of God should plan it so, to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong.
