¹ So once for all get rid of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all sorts of slander,

⁵ You hypocrite, first get the girder out of your own eye, and then you can see well enough to get the tiny speck out of your brother's eye.

⁷ You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied beautifully about you, when he said:

²⁸ So you, too, on the outside seem to people to be upright, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

⁵¹ and will cut him in two, and give him his share with the hypocrites, where they will weep and grind their teeth."

¹⁵ Should we pay it, or should we not?" Now because He saw their pretense, He said to them, "Why are you testing me so? Bring me a twenty-cent coin to look at."

⁴² How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me get that tiny speck out of your eye,' when you cannot see the girder in your own eye? You hypocrite! First get the girder out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly how to get out the tiny speck in your brother's eye.

⁴⁴ A curse on you, because you are like unmarked graves which men walk over without knowing it!"

¹ Meanwhile as the people had gathered in tens of thousands, so that they were trampling upon one another, He began to say, first of all, to His disciples: "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, hypocrisy.

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward Him, and said of him, "Here is a genuine Israelite with no deceit in him!"

²⁹ because they overflow with every sort of evil-doing, wickedness, greed, and malice; they are full of envy, murder, quarreling, deceit, ill-will;

¹² The night has almost passed; the day is at hand. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness, and put on the weapons of light. ¹³ Let us live becomingly for people who are in the light of day, not in carousing and drunkenness, nor in sexual immorality and licentiousness, nor in quarreling and jealousy.

² I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you could not take it. Why, you cannot take it even now, ³ for you are still unspiritual. For when there are still jealousy and wrangling among you, are you not still unspiritual and living by a human standard?

⁸ So let us keep our feast, not with old yeast nor with the yeast of vice and wickedness, but with the bread of purity and truth without the yeast.

²⁰ Brothers, stop being children in intelligence, but as to evil keep on being babies; and yet as to intelligence be men of maturity.

²⁰ I repeat it, I am apprehensive that, somehow or other, there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, rivalries, slanders, gossiping, haughty pride, and disorders,

²¹ envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I now warn you, as I have done before, that those who practice such things shall not be heirs of the kingdom of God. ²² But the product of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³ gentleness, self-control. There is no law against such things. ²⁴ And those who belong to Jesus the Christ have crucified the lower nature with its passions and evil cravings. ²⁵ If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk where the Spirit leads. ²⁶ Let us stop being ambitious for honors, so challenging one another, envying one another.

²² to lay aside, with your former way of living, your old self which is on the way to destruction in accordance with its deceptive impulses; ²³ and to have a new attitude of mind ²⁴ and put on the new self which has been created in the likeness of God, which fruits in right and holy living inspired by the truth. ²⁵ So you must lay aside falsehood and each of you practice telling the truth to his neighbor, for we are parts of one another.

³¹ You must remove all bitterness, rage, anger, loud threats, and insults, with all malice.

⁵ So once for all put to death your lower, earthly nature with respect to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is real idolatry. ⁶ It is on account of these very sins that God's anger is coming. ⁷ You too used to practice these sins, when you used to live that sort of life. ⁸ But now you too must once for all put them all aside -- anger, rage, malice, and abusive, filthy talk from your lips.

³ For our appeal did not originate from a delusion or an impure motive; it was not made in fraud;

¹¹ The deaconesses too must be serious, not gossips; they must be temperate and perfectly trustworthy.

³ the older women, too, to be reverent in their deportment, and not to be slanderers or slaves to heavy drinking, but to be teachers of what is right,

³ For once we too were without understanding, disobedient, misled, habitual slaves to all sorts of passions and pleasures, spending our lives in malice and envy. ⁴ But when the goodness and lovingkindness of God our Saviour were brought to light, ⁵ He saved us, not for upright deeds that we had done, but in accordance with His mercy, through the bath of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

¹ Therefore, as we have so vast a crowd of spectators in the grandstands, let us throw off every impediment and the sin that easily entangles our feet, and run with endurance the race for which we are entered,

²¹ So strip yourselves of everything impure and all the evils prevailing around you, and in humble spirit welcome the message which when rooted in your hearts is able to save your souls.

¹⁴ But if you cherish bitter jealousy and rivalry in your hearts, stop being proud of it and stop being false to the standard of truth.

¹⁶ For wherever jealousy and rivalry exist, there will be confusion and all sorts of evil practices. ¹⁷ The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of compassion and good deeds, free from doubts and insincerity.

⁵ Or, do you think that the Scripture means nothing when it says, "He jealously yearns for the Spirit that He causes to dwell in your hearts"?

¹¹ Stop talking against one another, brothers. Whoever is in the habit of talking against a brother or of criticizing his brother is criticizing and condemning the law. But if you are in the habit of criticizing the law, you are not a practicer but a critic of the law.

⁹ Stop muttering against one another, brothers, so as to keep from being judged yourselves. Look! The Judge is standing at the very door.

¹⁸ because you know that you have not been ransomed with things that perish as silver or gold, from the futile way of living taught by your fathers, ¹⁹ but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without a blemish or a blot, ²⁰ who was foreordained for it before the foundation of the world but was brought out to public view at the end of the ages, for the sake of you ²¹ who through Him trust in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory; so that your faith and hope may rest in God. ²² Since you have purified your souls by obeying the truth, in sincere love for the brotherhood you must love one another heartily and fervently, ²³ because you have been born anew, not from a germ that perishes but from one that does not perish, by the word of the living and everlasting God. ²⁴ For "All human life is just like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass dries up; the flowers drop off. ²⁵ But the word of the Lord lives on forever"; that is, the message of the good news which has been brought to you.

¹⁶ Live like free men, only do not make your freedom a pretext for doing evil, but live like slaves of God.

²² He never committed a sin, and deceit was never found on His lips.

¹⁰ For "Whoever wants to enjoy life and see delightful days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

² so that he no longer can spend the rest of his earthly life in harmony with human desires but in accordance with God's will.

⁴ They are astonished that you are not still rushing hand in hand with them into the same excesses of profligate living, and they abuse you for it;

⁵ and they have never been known to tell a lie with their lips; they are blameless.
