²⁷ For I am come in the midst of you, not as he who sitteth down, but, as he that serveth.

²⁸ Even as the Son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. But do you seek to increase from a little, and to be diminished from what is greater. However, when you are come and are desired to sup, do not you sit in the most eminent places, lest more honourable than thou come, and he that invited thee to supper come upon thee and say to thee, Go down still lower; and thou be put to confusion. But if thou sittest in a lower place, and one inferior to thee comes, he that invited thee will say to thee, Go and sit higher. For this will be to thy advantage.

³⁷ Blessed [are] those servants, whom the Lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I [say] unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

⁷ But which of you having a servant plowing, or seeding, when he is come from the field, will he say presently unto him, Go and sit down? ⁸ But he will say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thy self, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward eat and drink? ⁹ Doth he thank the servant because he hath done what he was bidden? I suppose not.

⁵ After that, he taketh and poureth water into a bason, and began to wash his disciples feet, and to wipe [them] with the towel wherewith he was girded. ⁶ He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. He saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? ⁷ Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not yet, but thou shalt know hereafter. ⁸ Peter saith unto him, Lord, Thou shalt never wash [my] feet. Jesus answered, If I shall not wash thee, thou hast no part with me. ⁹ Peter saith unto him, Lord, not the feet only, but also the hands and the head. ¹⁰ Jesus saith unto him, he that is washed, needeth not to have his head washed, but his feet only, for he his clean all over, and ye are clean, but not all. ¹¹ For Jesus knew who should betray him. ¹² So after he had washed their feet, and had taken [his] garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? ¹³ Ye call me Master, and Lord: and ye say well; for I am. ¹⁴ If I then [your] Lord and Master, have washed your feet, how much more should ye do it: ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Verily, verily I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his Lord, neither he that is sent, greater than he that sent him.

⁹ For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

⁷ But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: ⁸ And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
