³² Wherefore? Because they sought it, not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law: for they stumbled at that stumbling stone;

⁵⁷ And they were offended at him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

¹⁶ And behold one came and said to him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? ¹⁷ And he said to him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. ¹⁸ He saith to him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder: thou shalt not commit adultery; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not bear false witness; ¹⁹ Honour thy father and mother, and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ²⁰ The young man saith to him, All these things have I kept from my childhood: what lack I yet?

³⁴ Behold this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be spoken against,

³ For they being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.

¹¹ I say then, Have they stumbled so as to fall? God forbid. But by their fall salvation is come to the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy.

²³ And happy is he, whosoever shall not be offended at me.

²⁷ Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth to everlasting life, which the Son of man will give you; for him hath God the Father sealed. ²⁸ Then said they to him, What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? ²⁹ Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

³⁰ And having brought them out he said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? ³¹ And they said, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved and thy houshold. ³² And they spake the word of the Lord to him and to all that were in his house. ³³ And taking them that very hour of the night, he washed their stripes, and was immediately baptized, he and all his houshold. ³⁴ And having brought them up into his house, he set a table before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with his whole house.

¹⁶ Therefore it is of faith, that it might be of grace, that the promise might be firm to all the seed; not only to that which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, (As it is written,

²³ to the Jews a stumbling block, and to the Greeks foolishness:

⁸ And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, to them who stumble, not believing the word, whereunto also they were appointed.

⁹ If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; and this is the testimony of God, which he hath testified of his Son. ¹⁰ He that believeth on the Son of God, hath the testimony in himself. He that believeth not God, hath made him a liar, because he believeth not the testimony which he hath testified of his Son. ¹¹ And this is the testimony, that God hath given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. ¹² He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
