³¹ In like manner also the chief priests mocking said one to another, with the scribes, He saved others; cannot he save himself?

⁴¹ In like manner the chief priests also with the scribes and elders mocking him said, He saved others; Cannot he save himself? ⁴² If he be the king of Israel, ⁴³ let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God: let him deliver him now if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God.

³⁵ And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others: let him save himself, if he be the Christ, the chosen of God. ³⁶ And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, ³⁷ And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and elders assembled a council and said, What do we? ⁴⁸ For this man doth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him, and the Romans will come and subvert both our place and nation. ⁴⁹ And one of them, Caiaphas, being the high priest that year, ⁵⁰ said to them, Ye know nothing, Nor consider, it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. ⁵¹ He spake not this of himself, but being high-priest that year, he prophesied, that Jesus should die for the nation: ⁵² And not for that nation only, but that he might also gather into one all the children of God that were scattered abroad.

²³ And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. ²⁴ Verily, verily I say unto you, Unless a grain of wheat that falleth into the ground die, it remaineth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

¹⁷ For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well-doing than for evil-doing. ¹⁸ For Christ also once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh,
