¹⁶ For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? Is it not in that thou goest with us? So shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; ² So that thou incline thy ear to wisdom, and apply thy heart to understanding; ³ Yes, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

⁸ Yes, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. ⁹ With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yes, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

¹⁷ I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.

³ And to speak to the priests who were in the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

¹¹ He answered and said to them, Because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hid in a field; which, when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

³⁵ And in the morning, rising a great while before day, he went out and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

¹¹ And he said to them, To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but to them that are without, all these things are done in parables:

¹ Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God,

¹⁷ Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you;

¹⁵ See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, ¹⁶ Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. ¹⁷ Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

¹⁹ These are they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.

¹⁵ And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: ¹⁶ He hath said, who heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the Most High, who saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

¹ Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers. ² But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

²³ A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

¹⁶ Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.

¹⁶ Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

³ Also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

³⁴ And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their borders.

¹ Now as concerning things offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

¹² Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

¹⁵ Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife; and some also from good will.

¹⁵ Who have forsaken the right way, and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; ¹⁶ But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice, forbad the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. ¹⁸ For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that had quite escaped from them who live in error. ¹⁹ While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he brought into bondage.

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thy own confusion, and to the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?

⁴ Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

⁹ (69:8)I am become a stranger to my brethren, and an alien to my mother's children.

²⁰ (69:19)Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonor: my adversaries are all before thee.

³ Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us; for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. ⁴ Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

² When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

¹⁰ Cast out the scorner, and contention shall end; yes, strife and reproach shall cease.

¹⁶ When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall.

³⁹ And they that passed by, reviled him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross. ⁴¹ Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, ⁴² He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he is King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. ⁴³ He trusted in God; let him deliver him now if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. ⁴⁴ The thieves also who were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

⁴ In which they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

¹⁴ If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you. On their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

² I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

¹¹ The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

¹⁴ The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

²² Understanding is a well-spring of life to him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.

⁵ Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.

¹⁴ But whoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him, shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

³⁸ He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. ³⁹ (But this he spoke of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive, for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

¹⁶ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

⁶ Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

¹⁵ Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment; thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor.

¹⁶ And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. ¹⁷ Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.

¹⁹ Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift; for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

⁹ And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: ¹⁰ And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. ⁷ Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him? ⁸ Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?

¹⁹ How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

² How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.

¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

²³ These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

²¹ To have respect of persons is not good: for, for a piece of bread that man will transgress.

²³ Who justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

¹⁴ And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.

³ That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his mischievous desire: so they wrap it up.

¹⁶ And they sent out to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.

¹⁶ A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.

¹⁰ Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well-advised is wisdom.

³ In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

³⁵ And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth to the LORD, and I cannot go back.

²⁴ And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on my enemies. So none of the people tasted any food. ²⁵ And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground. ²⁶ And when the people had come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath. ²⁷ But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in a honey-comb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened. ²⁸ Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint. ²⁹ Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how my eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. ³⁰ How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to-day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines? ³¹ And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Ajalon: and the people were very faint. ³² And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people ate them with the blood. ³³ Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone to me this day. ³⁴ And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say to them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there. ³⁵ And Saul built an altar to the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built to the LORD: ³⁶ And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatever seemeth good to thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither to God. ³⁷ And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day. ³⁸ And Saul said, Draw ye near hither all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day. ³⁹ For as the LORD liveth, who saveth Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him. ⁴⁰ Then said he to all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said to Saul, Do what seemeth good to thee. ⁴¹ Therefore Saul said to the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped. ⁴² And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken. ⁴³ Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand, and, lo, I must die. ⁴⁴ And Saul answered, God do so, and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan. ⁴⁵ And the people said to Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? By no means: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not. ⁴⁶ Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.

¹⁴ And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul. ¹⁵ Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain, that he bring him down to you to-morrow, as though ye would inquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, before he shall come near, are ready to kill him. ¹⁶ And when the son of Paul's sister heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul. ¹⁷ Then Paul called one of the centurions to him, and said, Bring this young man to the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him. ¹⁸ So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me to him, and prayed me to bring this young man to thee, who hath something to say to thee. ¹⁹ Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me? ²⁰ And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee, that thou wouldst bring down Paul to-morrow into the council, as though they would inquire somewhat concerning him more perfectly. ²¹ But do not thou yield to them: for there are of them who lie in wait for him more than forty men, who have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now they are ready, looking for a promise from thee. ²² So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shown these things to me.

⁵ And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. ⁶ And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth. ⁷ Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, to the third and to the fourth generation.

⁶ And David was greatly distressed: for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons, and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

³ The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my preserver; thou savest me from violence.

⁴⁵ Strangers shall submit themselves to me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient to me. ⁴⁶ Strangers shall fade away, and they shall tremble from their close places. ⁴⁷ The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.

⁵¹ He is the tower of salvation for his king: and he showeth mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.

² (18:1)To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who spoke to the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said, I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.

¹ A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

³ (56:2)My enemies would daily swallow me up: for they are many that fight against me, O thou Most High. ⁴ (56:3)In the time when I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

³ (61:2)From the end of the earth will I cry to thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. ⁴ (61:3)For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

² I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

¹⁴ Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

² My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

⁶ For to us a child is born, to us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

⁴ Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

¹⁵ For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell in safety: and this is his name by which he shall be called, JEHOVAH OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

¹⁹ The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon my high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

²³ Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

⁸ I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.

³¹ For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges:

²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; ²⁵ If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much;

⁶ (49:5)Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall encompass me? ⁷ (49:6)They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁸ (49:7)None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: ⁹ (49:8)(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

⁵ (52:3)Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. ⁶ (52:4)Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue. ⁷ (52:5)God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling-place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.

¹⁰ (62:9)Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. ¹¹ (62:10)Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

¹⁵ The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

¹² For wisdom is a defense, and money is a defense: but the excellence of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast abundance of goods laid up for many years; take thy ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said to him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided? ²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God.

⁶ Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes. ⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath. ⁸ Therefore take to you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer for yourselves a burnt-offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job. ⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job. ¹⁰ And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. ¹¹ Then came there to him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and ate bread with him in his house: and they condoled with him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an ear-ring of gold. ¹² So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. ¹³ He had also seven sons, and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Keren-happuch. ¹⁵ And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. ¹⁶ After this Job lived a hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations. ¹⁷ So Job died, being old and full of days.

³³ The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom: and before honor is humility.

¹⁸ Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

²³ A man's pride shall bring him low: but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.

⁵ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. ⁶ Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: ⁷ And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thy iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. ⁸ Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. ⁹ And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. ¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. ¹¹ Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities shall be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate; ¹² And the LORD shall have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. ¹³ But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil-tree, and as an oak whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance of it.

⁴⁹ Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. ⁵⁰ And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

² Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou settest thy heart as the heart of God:

⁹ Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no god, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.

²³ But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drank wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, thou hast not glorified. ²⁴ Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

²⁰ And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin, and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;

²³ At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to show thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.

¹¹ For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

²¹ And upon a set day, Herod arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration to them. ²² And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten by worms, and died.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves to the elder. Yes, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

¹⁴ Then shalt thou inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and behold, if it is truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;

⁴ Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that pertained to Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king.

²⁴ And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace. ²⁵ And it came to pass, when he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why didst thou not go with me, Mephibosheth? ²⁶ And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride on it, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame. ²⁷ And he hath slandered thy servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thy eyes. ²⁸ For all of my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that ate at thy own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more to the king? ²⁹ And the king said to him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land. ³⁰ And Mephibosheth said to the king, Yes, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king hath come again in peace to his own house.

¹⁰ And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews enemy. ¹¹ And the king said to Haman, The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee. ¹² Then were the king's scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded to the king's lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province, according to the writing of it, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king's ring. ¹³ And the letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey. ¹⁴ The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province, was published to all people, that they should be ready against that day. ¹⁵ The posts departed, being hastened by the king's commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city Shushan was perplexed.

⁵ And said, If it shall please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing shall seem right before the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the king's provinces: ⁶ For how can I endure to see the evil that will come to my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred? ⁷ Then the king Ahasuerus said to Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews. ⁸ Write ye also for the Jews, as it pleaseth you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring: for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, no man may reverse. ⁹ Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day of it; and it was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded, to the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India to Cush, a hundred twenty and seven provinces, to every province according to the writing of it, and to every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language. ¹⁰ And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus's name, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by posts on horseback, and riders on mules, camels, and young dromedaries: ¹¹ In which the king granted the Jews who were in every city to assemble, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey, ¹² Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, ¹³ The copy of the writing for a commandment, to be given in every province was published to all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. ¹⁴ So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace. ¹⁵ And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan rejoiced, and was glad: ¹⁶ The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honor. ¹⁷ And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.

¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

²⁵ It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make inquiry.

⁹ (6:8)Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it may not be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.

¹⁴ (6:13)Then they answered and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.

⁵¹ Doth our law judge any man before it heareth him, and knoweth what he doeth?

²⁰ Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell upon the ground, and worshiped, ²¹ And said, Naked came I from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to his crown. ⁸ And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself with it; and he sat down among the ashes. ⁹ Then said his wife to him, Dost thou still retain thy integrity? curse God, and die. ¹⁰ But he said to her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison of which drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

¹⁴ Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions: ¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life.

¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe to me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou my affliction; ¹⁶ For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou showest thyself wonderful upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thy indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

⁹ (30:8)I cried to thee, O LORD; and to the LORD I made supplication. ¹⁰ (30:9)What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?

³ When I kept silence, my bones became old through my roaring all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drouth of summer. Selah.

² (38:1)A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance. O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ³ (38:2)For thy arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand falleth heavy upon me. ⁴ (38:3)There is no soundness in my flesh because of thy anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.

¹⁰ (42:9)I will say to God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? ¹¹ (42:10)As with a sword in my bones, my enemies reproach me; while they say daily to me, Where is thy God?

³ (55:2)Attend to me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;

⁵ (55:4)My heart is severely pained within me: and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.

² (77:1)To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph. I cried to God with my voice, even to God with my voice; and he gave ear to me. ³ (77:2)In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.

¹⁴ (88:13)But to thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer come before thee. ¹⁵ (88:14)LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? ¹⁶ (88:15)I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

²² For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

³ He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

¹³ A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

²² A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

³³ And he taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and began to be greatly amazed, and to be very heavy; ³⁴ And saith to them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful to death: tarry ye here, and watch.

³ And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; ⁴ And patience, experience; and experience, hope: ⁵ And hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts, by the Holy Spirit which is given to us.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ But in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us.

¹² For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our manner of life in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

⁷ So that on the other hand, ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such one should be swallowed up with excessive sorrow.

⁹ And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ¹⁰ Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

² My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.

⁶ In which ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season (if need be) ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

⁹ Give therefore to thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

⁹⁷ MEM. O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day. ⁹⁸ Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than my enemies: for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. ¹⁰¹ I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. ¹⁰² I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. ¹⁰³ How sweet are thy words to my taste! yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! ¹⁰⁴ Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain to wise counsels:

⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁴ The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

²³ Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

⁸ And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bore fruit a hundred-fold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. ⁹ And his disciples asked him, saying, What doth this parable mean? ¹⁰ And he said, To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

³⁹ And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

¹⁵ And that from a child thou hast known the sacred scriptures, which are able to make thee wise to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: ¹⁷ That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished to all good works.

⁵ If any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given to him.

²⁰ And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

¹⁰ And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou hast been pleased with me.

¹¹ (43:12)And take double money in your hand; and the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; it may be it was an oversight:

²⁷ And now this blessing which thy handmaid hath brought to my lord, let it even be given to the young men that follow my lord.

⁸ A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

⁶ Many will entreat the favor of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

¹⁴ A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom, strong wrath.

¹ And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred bunches of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. ² And the king said to Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink. ³ And the king said, And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said to the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said, To-day shall the house of Israel restore to me the kingdom of my father.

¹³ He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame to him.

⁵ For we have found this a pestilent man, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ring-leader of the sect of the Nazarenes: ⁶ Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.

¹² And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither exciting the people to sedition, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city: ¹³ Neither can they prove the things of which they now accuse me.

²¹ When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found. ²² Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man would yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff. ²³ And they ran and brought him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. ²⁴ And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king. ²⁵ Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. ²⁶ And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched. ²⁷ But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.

⁴² And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

⁶³ To the sons of Merari were given by lot, throughout their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

³¹ These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites, even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren.

¹ And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities.

³³ The lot is cast into the lap: but the whole disposing of it is from the LORD.

⁵ But to Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. ⁶ And the LORD said to Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? ⁷ If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And to thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. ⁸ And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

⁴¹ And Esau hated Jacob, because of the blessing with which his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob. ⁴² And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as concerning thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. ⁴³ Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran; ⁴⁴ And tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury shall turn away; ⁴⁵ Till thy brother's anger shall turn away from thee, and he shall forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and bring thee from thence. Why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?

⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. ⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and camels, into two bands; ⁸ And said, If Esau shall come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left, will escape. ⁹ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who saidst to me, Return to thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee; ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shown to thy servant: for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two bands. ¹¹ Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he shall come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

³ Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors. ⁴ And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him. ⁵ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

¹⁸ And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. ¹⁹ And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer is coming. ²⁰ Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit; and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams. ²¹ And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him from their hands: and said, Let us not kill him. ²² And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might deliver him from their hands, to bring him back to his father. ²³ And it came to pass when Joseph had come to his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, his coat of many colors that was on him. ²⁴ And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty; there was no water in it. ²⁵ And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold, a company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead, with their camels bearing spicery, and balm, and myrrh, going to carry them down to Egypt. ²⁶ And Judah said to his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood. ²⁷ Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh: and his brethren were content.

²² And Absalom spoke to his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have I not commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

²³ Then king Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah hath not spoken this word against his own life. ²⁴ Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, who hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me a house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day. ²⁵ And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.

¹⁶ So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thy own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.

¹⁷ And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

¹⁹ A false witness that speaketh lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren.

³² He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit, than he that taketh a city.

³⁹ And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed, separating one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed to Cyprus.

¹³ The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble. ¹⁴ A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompense of a man's hands shall be rendered to him.

² A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.

¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if thou keepest them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.

²¹ That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send to thee?

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. ¹² As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that restraineth his lips is wise. ²⁰ The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

³¹ The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

³⁰ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

² A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence. ³ He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

⁴ The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the well-spring of wisdom as a flowing brook. ⁵ It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment. ⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

¹⁹ I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the LORD; and I will heal him.

³⁵ A good man, out of the good treasure of the heart, bringeth forth good things: and an evil man, out of the evil treasure, bringeth forth evil things. ³⁶ But I say to you, That for every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

¹⁴ How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? ¹⁵ And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things?

¹⁶ To the one we are the savor of death to death; and to the other the savor of life to life. And who is sufficient for these things?

¹⁵ Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also are transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

²⁹ Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers.

¹⁰ For there are many disorderly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: ¹¹ Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of sordid gain.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire from hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of animals in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. ⁹ With this we bless God, even the Father; and with this we curse men, who are made after the similitude of God.

¹⁸ For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that had quite escaped from them who live in error.

¹⁸ And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone: I will make him a help meet for him.

⁶⁷ And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

²⁰ And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had to her. ²¹ And Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife (for my days are fulfilled) that I may go in to her.

²⁸ And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel, his daughter, for a wife also.

⁴ So shalt thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

¹⁵ Drink waters out of thy own cistern, and running waters out of thy own well. ¹⁶ Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. ¹⁷ Let them be only thy own, and not for strangers with thee. ¹⁸ Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. ¹⁹ Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. ²⁰ And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? ²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. ²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be held with the cords of his sins. ²³ He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

³⁵ For whoever findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favor from the LORD.

⁴ A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

¹⁴ House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.

¹⁰ Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. ¹¹ The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. ¹² She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. ¹³ She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. ¹⁴ She is like the merchant's ships; she bringeth her food from afar. ¹⁵ She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth food to her household, and a portion to her maidens. ¹⁶ She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. ¹⁷ She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. ¹⁸ She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. ¹⁹ She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. ²⁰ She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yes, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. ²² She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. ²³ Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. ²⁴ She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles to the merchant. ²⁵ Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. ²⁶ She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and on her tongue is the law of kindness. ²⁷ She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. ²⁸ Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. ²⁹ Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. ³⁰ Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. ³¹ Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

⁹ Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labor which thou takest under the sun.

¹² (12:11)Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yes, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.

² Nevertheless, to avoid lewdness, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

⁷ And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange to them, and spoke roughly to them; and he said to them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

³⁰ The man who is the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.

² And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

⁷ And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house.

³⁶ And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thy house, shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priest's offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.

¹⁰ And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there are many servants in these days that break away every man from his master.

¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do: for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.

¹ Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets to Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant feared the LORD: and the creditor hath come to take to him my two sons to be bond-men. ² And Elisha said to her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thy handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

² For all these things hath my hand made, and all these things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

³ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

⁹ Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: ¹⁰ But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. ¹¹ For the sun hath no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and its flower falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

³ And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say to him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

⁶ But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment-seats?

⁴ And Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been toward thee very good: ⁵ For he put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: Why then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

²⁶ And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you, of the spoil of the enemies of the LORD; ²⁷ To them who were in Beth-el, and to them who were in south Ramoth, and to them who were in Jattir, ²⁸ And to them who were in Aroer, and to them who were in Siphmoth, and to them who were in Eshtemoa, ²⁹ And to them who were in Rachal, and to them who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to them who were in the cities of the Kenites, ³⁰ And to them who were in Hormah, and to them who were in Chor-ashan, and to them who were in Athach, ³¹ And to them who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were accustomed to resort.

²⁶ I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been to me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

¹ And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? ² And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him to David, the king said to him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he. ³ And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him? and Ziba said to the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, who is lame in his feet. ⁴ And the king said to him, Where is he? And Ziba said to the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar. ⁵ Then king David sent, and brought him from the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar. ⁶ Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, had come to David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! ⁷ And David said to him, Fear not: for I will surely show thee kindness for the sake of Jonathan thy father, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. ⁸ And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldst look upon such a dead dog as I am? ⁹ Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, I have given to thy master's son all that pertained to Saul, and to all his house. ¹⁰ Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread always at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. ¹¹ Then said Ziba to the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king's sons. ¹² And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Micah. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants to Mephibosheth. ¹³ So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he ate continually at the king's table; and was lame in both his feet.

¹⁷ And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?

²⁷ And it came to pass, when David had come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, ²⁸ Brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, ²⁹ And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of cows, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

³⁰ And Mephibosheth said to the king, Yes, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king hath come again in peace to his own house. ³¹ And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan. ³² Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim: for he was a very great man. ³³ And the king said to Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem. ³⁴ And Barzillai said to the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? ³⁵ I am this day eighty years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing-men and singing-women? why then should thy servant be yet a burden to my lord the king? ³⁶ Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense me with such a reward? ³⁷ Let thy servant, I pray thee, return again, that I may die in my own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to thee. ³⁸ And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to thee: and whatever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee. ³⁹ And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king had come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.

⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the LORD'S oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

³⁸ All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king. ³⁹ And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them. ⁴⁰ Moreover, they that were nigh them, even to Issachar, and Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and provision, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.

¹⁷ A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

⁹ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

⁴⁹ And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail Master; and kissed him. ⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, Friend, Why art thou come? Then they came, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

¹³ Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ Ye are my friends, if ye do whatever I command you. ¹⁵ Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you.
