⁴⁶ If they shall sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou shalt be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives to the land of the enemy, far or near;

¹⁷ Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?

³ And dost thou open thy eyes upon such one, and bring me into judgment with thee? ⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?

² Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

⁵ For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.

³ If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

² And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

²⁰ Therefore by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, that also will prove me perverse.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. ³³ Neither is there any judge between us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

² I will say to God, Do not condemn me; show me why thou contendest with me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. ⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare to him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near to him.

¹³ Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

¹⁴ If he should set his heart upon man, if he should gather to himself his spirit and his breath; ¹⁵ All flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust.

¹⁵ For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. ¹⁶ For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit would fail before me, and the souls which I have made.

²⁰ No, but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

²⁰ For if our heart condemneth us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

¹⁴ For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thy heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people: that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth. ¹⁵ For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth. ¹⁶ And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, to show in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. ¹⁷ As yet dost thou exalt thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go?

¹⁷ And I, behold I, will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honor upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots and upon his horsemen. ¹⁸ And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honor upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

¹² And behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye will not prosper.

¹⁰ Then should I yet have comfort; yes, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.

¹⁹ If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?

⁶ And that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thy iniquity deserveth.

¹³ With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.

²³ He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty. ²⁶ He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers: ²⁷ Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

⁵ Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.

⁹ (40:14)Then will I also confess to thee that thy own right hand can save thee.

²⁴ O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

⁵ To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that feareth always: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.

¹ He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

²⁰ Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

³⁴ And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honored him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: ³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say to him, What doest thou? ³⁶ At the same time my reason returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and brightness returned to me; and my counselors and my lords sought to me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me. ³⁷ Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: ²¹ And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will. ²² And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this; ²³ But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drank wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, thou hast not glorified. ²⁴ Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written. ²⁵ And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. ²⁶ This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. ²⁷ TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. ²⁸ PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. ²⁹ Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. ³⁰ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

²² Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

⁸ In which he hath abounded towards us in all wisdom and prudence;

¹⁹ And what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

¹⁰ To the intent that now to the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

²⁰ Now to him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.

²⁴ Now to him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, ²⁵ To God the only wise, our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

⁵ And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: Of the tribe of Reuben; Elizur the son of Shedeur. ⁶ Of Simeon; Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

⁶ Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs?

¹² Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and measured heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

⁶ He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting.

²¹ Jesus answered and said to them, Verily I say to you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig-tree, but also, if ye shall say to this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

¹¹ The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.

⁴ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. ⁵ Who hath laid the measures of it, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Upon what are the foundations of it fastened? or who laid its corner stone; ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

³ (75:2)When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly.

⁷ Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;

¹⁹ And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

²¹ To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say to him, What doest thou?

¹³ For lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth to man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.

⁹ And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

²⁹ Immediately after the tribulation of those days, shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

²⁵ And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; ²⁶ Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for apprehension of those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

³¹ Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in its season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with its sons? ³³ Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set its dominion on the earth? ³⁴ Canst thou lift thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? ³⁵ Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say to thee, Here we are? ³⁶ Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven, ³⁸ When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

³ Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:

¹³ He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works.

⁴ He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.

⁸ Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shades of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: JEHOVAH is his name:

¹³ And from thence we made a circuit, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

¹¹ Who is like to thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders!

⁹ Who doeth great things and unsearchable; wonderful things without number:

¹² He divideth the sea by his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud. ¹³ By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. ¹⁴ Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

²³ Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in abundance of justice: he will not afflict.

¹⁵ My mouth shall show forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.

¹⁸ Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.

⁴ To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever.

¹¹ He hath made every thing beautiful in its time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

²⁶ Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names, by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. ²⁷ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over by my God? ²⁸ Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

² I thought it good to show the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought towards me. ³ How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

⁸ Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: ⁹ On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:

¹⁴ Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.

¹⁶ Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and power everlasting. Amen.

¹⁰ If he shall cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

¹³ But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.

²⁹ When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:

⁹ Woe to him that contendeth with his Maker! Let the potsherd contend with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

⁶ O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.

²⁶ Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight.

¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? is thy eye evil because I am good?

¹⁸ Therefore he hath mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. ¹⁹ Thou wilt say then to me, Why doth he yet find fault? for who hath resisted his will? ²⁰ No, but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor?

¹¹ In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

¹² He divideth the sea by his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.

⁹ (40:14)Then will I also confess to thee that thy own right hand can save thee. ¹⁰ (40:15)Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. ¹¹ (40:16)Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.

¹⁰ (89:9)Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when its waves arise, thou stillest them.

⁷ For the Egyptian shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.

² Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evil-doers, and against the help of them that work iniquity. ³ Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is helped shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.

⁹ Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not that which hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

⁶ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. ⁷ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

²⁷ But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have built?

¹⁹ How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth?

³ If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

⁴ For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thy eyes. ⁵ But Oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;

⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

⁶ How much less man, that is a worm; and the son of man, who is a worm?

⁵ If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.

³⁸ Whatever prayer and supplication shall be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, who shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands towards this house: ³⁹ Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling-place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

¹³ And prayed to him: and he was entreated by him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he is God.

⁸ I would seek to God, and to God would I commit my cause:

⁵ If thou wouldst seek to God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty;

¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe to me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou my affliction;

²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer to him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

³¹ Surely it is meet to be said to God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more: ³² That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

⁹ They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first-born.

³ And I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

¹⁸ O my God, incline thy ear, and hear; open thy eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.

⁴ For I know nothing against myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

²³ Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

⁹ And Moses spoke so to the children of Israel: but they hearkened not to Moses, by reason of anguish of spirit, and cruel bondage.

¹³ And Gideon said to him, O my Lord, if the LORD is with us, why then hath all this befallen us? and where are all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

²⁴ If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

⁶ (18:5)The sorrows of hell encompassed me: the snares of death seized me.

¹⁸ If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: ¹⁹ But verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer. ²⁰ Blessed be God, who hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.

¹ I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. ² Because he hath inclined his ear to me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

¹ A Song of degrees. When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

⁴¹ And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said to them, Have ye here any thing for food?

¹⁴ And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told that Peter stood before the gate ¹⁵ And they said to her, Thou art insane. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then they said, It is his angel. ¹⁶ But Peter continued knocking. And when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

¹⁴ And there came a messenger to Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them: ¹⁵ And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yes, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only have escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God hath fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only have escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yes, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only have escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house: ¹⁹ And behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only have escaped alone to tell thee.

³ And the LORD said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and shunneth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to his crown.

¹³ So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹² I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.

¹⁴ He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant.

¹⁷ Not for any injustice in my hands: also my prayer is pure.

²² Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.

⁶ Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.

³ Also, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed who transgress without cause.

⁵ The voice of the LORD breaketh the cedars; yes, the LORD breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.

⁷ (42:6)O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

¹⁵ (83:14)As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;

¹⁷ Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding-place.

¹⁹ Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.

¹³ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in my anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it.

²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell, and great was the fall of it.

²⁰ A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he shall send forth judgment to victory.

³ Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

²⁵ But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

²⁰ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul;

¹⁹ How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow my spittle?

² As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty who hath afflicted my soul;

¹³ (39:12)Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

⁷ (88:6)Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.

¹⁵ (88:14)LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? ¹⁶ (88:15)I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. ¹⁷ (88:16)Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off. ¹⁸ (88:17)They came around me daily like water; they encompassed me together.

³ Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.

¹⁵ He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.

¹⁸ And I said, My strength and my hope hath perished from the LORD: ¹⁹ Remembering my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

¹¹ Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them who are exercised by it.

⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?

³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book.

⁵ If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up. ⁶ Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay. ⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

¹⁷ But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee. ¹⁸ Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee. ¹⁹ Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.

⁹ (40:14)Then will I also confess to thee that thy own right hand can save thee. ¹⁰ (40:15)Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.

¹¹ (62:10)Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

²⁵ Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and shunned evil.

² I know it to be so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?

⁵ For thy mouth uttereth thy iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Thy own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yes, thy own lips testify against thee.

¹ So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. ² Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

⁸ Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, ⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy, ¹¹ He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths. ¹² Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. ¹³ Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

³⁵ Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.

¹⁶ Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that restraineth his lips is wise.

²⁰ He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

⁵ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

³⁶ But I say to you, That for every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

²⁹ But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor?

¹⁵ And he said to them, Ye are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men, is abomination in the sight of God.

¹² Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I pursue, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended by Christ Jesus. ¹³ Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forward to those things which are before, ¹⁴ I press towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye are otherwise minded, God will reveal even this to you.

⁵ Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing gain to be godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

² For in many things we all offend. If any man offendeth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life. ¹⁶ I lothe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity.

²¹ And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts: ²⁴ And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

²⁶ He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoever walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? ¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

⁸ Thy hands have made me and fashioned me in all my parts; yet thou dost destroy me.

¹ For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them. ² All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. ³ This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yes, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

³ And say to the land of Israel, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of its sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked. ⁴ Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth from its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:

² And Jesus answering, said to them, Suppose ye that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered such things? ³ I tell you, No; but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

¹⁵ Now therefore that I have come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.

¹⁷ Then thy handmaid said, The word of my lord the king, will now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the LORD thy God will be with thee.

¹³ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

⁷ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off;

²⁰ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:

¹² Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them.

²² (44:21)Will not God search out this? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

¹⁹ Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast: ²⁰ Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall deliver their own souls only by their righteousness. ²¹ For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four severe judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?

¹³ Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemneth even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord GOD.

³⁶ And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, and, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: ³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheep-skins, and goat-skins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

³⁰ And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went.

⁴ But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

¹² And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head covered.

⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace-garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman had fallen upon the bed on which Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

³ Is it good to thee that thou shouldst oppress, that thou shouldst despise the work of thy hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁶ The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly. ⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: ⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare to thee. ⁹ Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? ¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

¹⁷ He leadeth counselors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.

¹¹ God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.

⁷ Why do the wicked live, become old, and, are mighty in power? ⁸ Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them. ¹⁰ Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. ¹² They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ. ¹³ They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. ¹⁴ Therefore they say to God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray to him?

²⁵ And if it is not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech of no worth?

¹⁴ From men who are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, who have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

³ For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they afflicted like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride encompasseth them as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

¹ Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me speak with thee of thy judgments: Why doth the way of the wicked prosper? why are they all happy that deal very treacherously? ² Thou hast planted them, yes, they have taken root: they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.

⁴ Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain on the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

¹⁷ This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

¹⁸ O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor: ¹⁹ And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down. ²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: ²¹ And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

⁷ After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. ⁸ I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things. ⁹ I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. ¹⁰ A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set and the books were opened. ¹¹ I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spoke: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. ¹² As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. ¹³ I saw in the night visions, and behold, one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. ¹⁴ And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. ¹⁵ I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. ¹⁶ I came near to one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. ¹⁷ These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. ¹⁸ But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. ¹⁹ Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; ²⁰ And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spoke very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows. ²¹ I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; ²² Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. ²³ Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. ²⁴ And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. ²⁵ And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. ²⁶ But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion to consume and to destroy it to the end. ²⁷ And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. ²⁸ Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

¹⁴ And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping animals that have no ruler over them? ¹⁵ They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad. ¹⁶ Therefore they sacrifice to their net, and burn incense to their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their food plenteous. ¹⁷ Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?

¹⁴ So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ O remember that my life is wind: my eye will no more see good.

⁵ (39:4)LORD, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.

¹¹ (39:10)Remove thy stroke away from me; I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.

⁴⁷ (89:46)How long, LORD, wilt thou hide thyself? for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?

⁹ For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years, as a tale that is told. ¹⁰ The days of our years are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

¹⁴ Whereas ye know not what will be on the morrow: For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

²³ Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

²⁷ (39:24)He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet. ²⁸ (39:25)He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. ²⁹ (39:26)Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings towards the south? ³⁰ (39:27)Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?

⁵ Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle towards heaven.

² That sendeth embassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation measured by line and trodden down, whose land the rivers have laid waste.

¹³ Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! for we are laid waste.

¹⁹ Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

⁸ Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat.

¹¹ Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹³ When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint;

² (77:1)To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph. I cried to God with my voice, even to God with my voice; and he gave ear to me. ³ (77:2)In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.

¹⁸ When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

⁷ Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

²⁵ For the thing which I greatly feared hath come upon me, and that which I dreaded hath come to me.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, that also will prove me perverse. ²¹ Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

¹⁴ If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from my iniquity.

¹⁶ For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

⁶ Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.

¹⁵ (88:14)LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? ¹⁶ (88:15)I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.

²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, he destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

⁷ Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thy hand.

¹⁴ If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe to me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou my affliction; ¹⁶ For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou showest thyself wonderful upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thy indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

¹⁶ Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁷ How oft is the candle of the wicked put out? and how oft cometh their destruction upon them? God distributeth sorrows in his anger.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

⁵ Is not thy wickedness great? and thy iniquities infinite? ⁶ For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for naught, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore snares are around thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee; ¹¹ Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee. ¹² Is not God in the hight of heaven? and behold the hight of the stars, how high they are! ¹³ And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven. ¹⁵ Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood! ¹⁷ Who said to God, depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them! ¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent deride them. ²⁰ Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth. ²¹ Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: by this good shall come to thee. ²² Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart. ²³ If thou shalt return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles. ²⁴ Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defense and thou shalt have plenty of silver. ²⁶ For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face to God. ²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer to him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. ²⁸ Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established to thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways. ²⁹ When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is exaltation; and he shall save the humble person. ³⁰ He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thy hands.

³³ The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

¹³ Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocence.

³⁵ Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger will turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

⁷ If my step hath turned out of the way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to my hands;

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence: so will I compass thy altar, O LORD:

¹³ He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but he who confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

¹⁶ Wash ye, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. ¹⁸ Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be white as snow, though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

²² For though thou shalt wash thee with niter, and take thee much soap, yet thy iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thy heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?

³ For they, being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God.

⁶ Thy own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yes, thy own lips testify against thee.

⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

⁶ (64:7)And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

⁸ Yes doubtless, and I count all things to be loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them to be dung, that I may win Christ, ⁹ And be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith:

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoke, and shall he not make it good?

⁷ But the LORD said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the hight of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

¹⁸ Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified. ¹⁹ Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall expire. ²⁰ Only do not two things to me: then will I not hide myself from thee. ²¹ Withdraw thy hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid. ²² Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me. ²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.

¹² Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.

⁵ Look to the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou. ⁶ If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions are multiplied, what doest thou to him? ⁷ If thou art righteous, what givest thou to him? or what receiveth he from thy hand?

¹⁰ That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

¹⁹ Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

²⁵ If one man shall sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man shall sin against the LORD, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not to the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

¹⁶ Then came there two women, that were harlots, to the king, and stood before him. ¹⁷ And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. ¹⁸ And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save us two in the house. ¹⁹ And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it. ²⁰ And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thy handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. ²¹ And when I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I bore. ²² And the other woman said, No; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king. ²³ Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead; and the other saith, No; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. ²⁴ And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. ²⁶ Then spoke the woman whose the living child was to the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother of it. ²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

¹ My little children, these things I write to you, that ye sin not. And if any man sinneth, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: ² And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

¹¹ Shall not his excellence make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?

²⁰ Only do not two things to me: then will I not hide myself from thee. ²¹ Withdraw thy hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid. ²² Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.

¹⁵ Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

² Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me; ³ When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness; ⁴ As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle; ⁵ When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me; ⁶ When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil; ⁷ When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street! ⁸ The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up. ⁹ The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me: ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand. ¹⁹ My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch. ²⁰ My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. ²¹ To me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel. ²² After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. ²⁴ If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down. ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

¹ At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of its place.

¹⁰ (39:9)I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.

¹¹ Who knoweth the power of thy anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.
