⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

²⁰ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul; ²¹ Who long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures; ²² Who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? ²³ Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

²⁰ In famine he will redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

² Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison of which drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

⁸ Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! ⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

¹¹ Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

³ When I kept silence, my bones became old through my roaring all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drouth of summer. Selah. ⁵ I acknowledged my sin to thee, and my iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

¹⁵ What shall I say? he hath both spoken to me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁷ Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun rose that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

⁵ If thou wouldst seek to God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty; ⁶ If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

⁹ Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, ¹⁰ Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: ¹¹ Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yes, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also perform it.

³⁷ Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

¹¹ According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

⁷ Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, to the third and to the fourth generation.

¹⁸ The LORD is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.

²¹ And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

²⁶ For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly to all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.

³ If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

¹ To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.

⁷ And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their task-masters; for I know their sorrows;

¹² Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say to him, What doest thou?

¹⁵ Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, that also will prove me perverse. ²¹ Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

⁷ Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thy hand.

⁶ Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.

¹⁵ Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

⁷ Let my enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.

¹⁷ (9:16)The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

¹⁵³ RESH. Consider my affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

⁵ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

⁵ (64:6)But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. ⁶ (64:7)And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

²⁰ Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; my heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.

¹ Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach. ² Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens. ³ We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows. ⁴ We have drank our water for money; our wood is sold to us. ⁵ Our necks are under persecution: we labor, and have no rest. ⁶ We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. ⁷ Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities. ⁸ Servants have ruled over us: there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand. ⁹ We procured our bread with the peril of our lives, because of the sword of the wilderness. ¹⁰ Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine. ¹¹ They ravished the women in Zion, and the maids in the cities of Judah. ¹² Princes were hanged by their hand: the faces of elders were not honored. ¹³ They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood. ¹⁴ The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their music. ¹⁵ The joy of our heart hath ceased; our dance is turned into mourning. ¹⁶ The crown is fallen from our head: woe to us, that we have sinned! ¹⁷ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim. ¹⁸ Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it. ¹⁹ Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation. ²⁰ Why dost thou forget us for ever, and forsake us so long time? ²¹ Turn thou us to thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. ²² But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very wroth against us.

¹⁸ Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

¹⁰ So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all the things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which it was our duty to do.

⁸ But to them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness; indignation and wrath: ⁹ Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

²⁹ If these men shall die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me. ³⁰ But if the LORD shall make a new thing, and the earth shall open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

⁵⁹ Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and severe sicknesses, and of long continuance.

⁹ Who doeth great things and unsearchable; wonderful things without number:

¹³ I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

¹⁰ He was to me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

⁷ Therefore I will be to them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them. ⁸ I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.

⁸ The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?

²¹ I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

⁸ And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face.

⁶ Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath encompassed me with his net. ⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment. ⁸ He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and my hope hath he removed like a tree. ¹¹ He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me to him as one of his enemies.

¹⁹ (55:18)He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.

¹¹ Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.

¹⁰ Because it prevented not my birth, nor hid sorrow from my eyes. ¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not expire at the time of my birth?

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the expiration of the breath.

¹⁰ But man dieth, and wasteth away: yes, man yieldeth his breath, and where is he?

¹⁰ Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor have men lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day in which I was born: let not the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A male child is born to thee; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noon; ¹⁷ Because he slew me not at my birth; or that my mother might have been my grave, and she had not been delivered. ¹⁸ Why was I brought into the world to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

²⁴ The Son of man goeth, as it is written concerning him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man, if he had not been born.

⁸ (58:7)Let them melt away as waters which run continually: when he bendeth his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ O remember that my life is wind: my eye will no more see good.

¹⁶ I lothe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity. ¹⁷ What is man, that thou shouldst magnify him? and that thou shouldst set thy heart upon him? ¹⁸ And that thou shouldst visit him every morning, and try him every moment? ¹⁹ How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow my spittle? ²⁰ I have sinned; what shall I do to thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:)

²⁵ Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good. ²⁶ They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.

²¹ Withdraw thy hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid.

¹ Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

⁵ (39:4)LORD, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.

¹³ (39:12)Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. ¹⁶ For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and its place shall know it no more.

²³ But now he is dead, Why should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

¹⁴ For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.

⁵ Let darkness and the shades of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

¹³ For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

⁸ The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thy eyes are upon me, and I am not. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁰ But man dieth, and wasteth away: yes, man yieldeth his breath, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up: ¹² So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens shall be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. ¹³ O that thou wouldst hide me in the grave, that thou wouldst keep me secret, until thy wrath is past, that thou wouldst appoint me a set time, and remember me! ¹⁴ If a man dieth, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change shall come.

²² When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.

⁴ Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shades of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

⁶ (88:5)Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.

¹¹ (88:10)Wilt thou show wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah. ¹² (88:11)Shall thy loving-kindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?

¹¹ I said, I shall not see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

⁶ Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drouth, and of the shades of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?

²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

¹⁷ Have the gates of death been opened to thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shades of death?

¹⁹ (44:18)Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

¹² (88:11)Shall thy loving-kindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God, before he shall cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and while ye look for light, he shall turn it into the shades of death, and make it gross darkness.

²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they who would pass from hence to you, cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
