¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him, and to comfort him.

¹ After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day. ² And Job spoke, and said,

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.

¹⁸ For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me. ¹⁹ Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. ²⁰ I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.

¹¹ Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.

⁹ Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

²⁰ For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly to you. ⁵ But if any hath caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all. ⁶ Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted by many.

⁸ For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it was but for a season. ⁹ Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. ¹⁰ For godly sorrow worketh penitence to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

¹⁹ For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they will keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

²⁸ But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

²² And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

⁵ But I would strengthen you with my mouth and the moving of my lips should assuage your grief.

²² Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life:

³² But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

⁴³ And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.

²⁹ Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers.

⁶ Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

¹² Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

¹⁴ The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that are bowed down.

¹⁸ There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

²³ The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. ²⁴ Pleasant words are as a honey-comb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

³ Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. ⁴ Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; he will come and save you.

⁶ Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

⁷ So that on the other hand, ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such one should be swallowed up with excessive sorrow.

⁶ Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

¹⁴ Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are disorderly, comfort the feeble-minded, support the weak, be patient towards all men.

³ I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept grievously.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and shunned evil.

⁸ And the LORD said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and shunneth evil? ⁹ Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for naught? ¹⁰ Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

¹ I Made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? ² For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit; ⁶ Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity. ⁷ If my step hath turned out of the way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to my hands; ⁸ Then let me sow, and let another eat; yes, let my offspring be rooted out. ⁹ If my heart hath been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor's door; ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind to another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is a hainous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. ¹² For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all my increase. ¹³ If I despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten of it; ¹⁸ (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;) ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate: ²² Then let my arm fall from my shoulder-blade, and my arm be broken from the bone. ²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure. ²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; ²⁵ If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much; ²⁶ If I have beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; ²⁷ And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand: ²⁸ This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. ²⁹ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or have lifted up myself when evil found him: ³⁰ Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. ³¹ If the men of my tabernacle have not said, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveler. ³³ If I have covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom: ³⁴ Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door? ³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare to him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near to him. ³⁸ If my land crieth against me, or its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits of it without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life: ⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

²⁶ For the LORD will be thy confidence, and will keep thy foot from being taken.

²⁶ In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

¹³ Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

¹⁷ And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

²⁰ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:

²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, he destroyeth the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge shall slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.

⁷ He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yes, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.

²⁵ I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

¹⁵ All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

¹ For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them. ² All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

⁴ And when the barbarians saw the animal hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

⁹ The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust to the day of judgment to be punished:

³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

¹⁴ (7:13)He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors. ¹⁵ (7:14)Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. ¹⁶ (7:15)He made a pit, and digged it, and hath fallen into the ditch which he made.

⁸ He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

⁸ And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were collected, the floods stood upright as a heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

³ Doth God pervert judgment; or doth the Almighty pervert justice?

² I know it to be so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?

³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean; ³¹ Yet wilt thou plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me.

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?

² Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's?

¹⁰ But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;

⁸ (40:13)Hide them in the dust together; bind their faces in secret.

² And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

¹⁷ The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

²⁰ For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

¹ Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me speak with thee of thy judgments: Why doth the way of the wicked prosper? why are they all happy that deal very treacherously?

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

²⁰ And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. ²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness; ²³ All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasurest up to thyself wrath against the day of wrath, and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

⁴ By no means: verily let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mayest be justified in thy sayings, and mayest overcome when thou art judged. ⁵ But if our unrighteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man.) ⁶ By no means: for then how shall God judge the world? ⁷ For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie to his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

²⁰ No, but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

⁸ And the four living beings had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.

¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, who drinketh iniquity like water?

⁵ Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; and the stars are not pure in his sight. ⁶ How much less man, that is a worm; and the son of man, who is a worm?

²⁰ Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening to the voice of his word. ²¹ Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

² Above it stood seraphim: each one had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. ³ And one cried to another, and said, Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

⁴ For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved to judgment;

⁶ And the angels who kept not their first state, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness to the judgment of the great day.

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

¹⁹ In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou shalt return to the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and to dust shalt thou return.

²⁷ And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I, who am dust and ashes, have taken upon me to speak to the Lord.

⁹ Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

¹² Your remembrances are like to ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

²⁸ And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth-eaten.

² He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

¹⁶ Who were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood!

⁶ Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay.

¹¹ (39:10)Remove thy stroke away from me; I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.

⁵ Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep; in the morning they are like grass which groweth. ⁶ In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. ⁷ For we are consumed by thy anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. ¹⁶ For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and its place shall know it no more.

⁴ His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.

⁷ But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God, and not from us.

¹ For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

²⁴ For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and its flower falleth away:

⁶ And nation was destroyed by nation, and city by city: for God troubled them with all adversity.

²⁰ Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem, eight years, and departed without being desired: yet they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchers of the kings.

¹⁴ If a man dieth, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change shall come.

²⁰ Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

²² When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.

¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they who have seen him shall say, Where is he?

³⁶ Yet he passed away, and lo, he was not: yes, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹³ (39:12)Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

⁷ (92:6)A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.

⁷ The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall perish.

¹² My age hath departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd's tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me. ¹³ I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

²² They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to naught.

²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

¹² But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.

⁵ (39:4)LORD, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.

¹⁴ (49:13)This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

²⁰ (49:19)He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.

³ Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. ⁴ His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

²² Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?

¹⁶ They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that shook kingdoms:

²⁰ But God said to him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried: ²³ And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

¹¹ For the sun hath no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and its flower falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
