²² In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

² (39:1)To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. ³ (39:2)I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

³³ Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spoke unadvisedly with his lips.

¹⁸ Why then hast thou brought me forth from the womb? O that I had expired, and no eye had seen me! ¹⁹ I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

¹⁰ Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor have men lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me.

²² And Moses stretched forth his hand towards heaven: and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: ²³ They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

¹² A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even to the end of the year.

² A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

¹⁸ Woe to you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land to the ninth hour.

²⁰ And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

¹⁰ And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

⁴ Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shades of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

¹⁰ Such as sit in darkness and in the shades of death, being bound in affliction and iron;

²⁸ For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God, before he shall cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and while ye look for light, he shall turn it into the shades of death, and make it gross darkness.

³ For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.

¹² As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

⁸ Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shades of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: JEHOVAH is his name:

¹⁰ And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end of it as a bitter day.

¹⁶ The people who sat in darkness, saw great light; and to them who sat in the region and shades of death, light hath arisen.

⁷⁹ To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shades of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

¹⁸ For ye are not come to the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor to blackness, and to darkness, and tempest,

²⁰ It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. ²¹ But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there. ²² And the wild beasts of the isles shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

⁸ The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

³⁴ Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.

²² And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be no more heard in thee; and no artificer, of whatever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be no more heard in thee; ²³ And the light of a candle shall shine no more in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

²⁵ And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah: and all the singing men and the singing women have spoken of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Israel: and behold, they are written in the lamentations.

³ If a man begetteth a hundred children, and liveth many years, so that the days of his years are many, and his soul is not filled with good, and also that he hath no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he. ⁴ For he cometh with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness. ⁵ Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

¹⁰ Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

¹⁷ Because he slew me not at my birth; or that my mother might have been my grave, and she had not been delivered.

¹⁴ Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

³ And she said, Behold, my maid Bilhah, go in to her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

²³ And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were brought up upon Joseph's knees.

¹² For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

⁴ And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all. ⁵ No eye pitied thee, to do any of these to thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field, to the lothing of thy person, in the day that thou wast born.

⁸ The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thy eyes are upon me, and I am not. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

²¹ And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

²² A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shades of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

¹⁰ But man dieth, and wasteth away: yes, man yieldeth his breath, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up: ¹² So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens shall be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

¹³ If I wait, the grave is my house: I have made my bed in the darkness.

²⁷ Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.

¹⁸ And Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.

²⁷ And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars he made to be as the sycamore trees that are in the vale, for abundance.

²¹ He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.

²⁵ Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defense and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

¹⁶ Though he should heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay? ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

⁷ Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he will make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

³ And Tyre built herself a strong hold, and amassed silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.

³ If a man begetteth a hundred children, and liveth many years, so that the days of his years are many, and his soul is not filled with good, and also that he hath no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

⁸ And last of all he was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.

¹³ O that thou wouldst hide me in the grave, that thou wouldst keep me secret, until thy wrath is past, that thou wouldst appoint me a set time, and remember me!

¹⁶ They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.

⁵ (55:4)My heart is severely pained within me: and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. ⁶ (55:5)Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. ⁷ (55:6)And I said, O that I had wings like a dove! for then I would fly away, and be at rest. ⁸ (55:7)Lo, then I would wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. ¹ The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. ² He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

²⁸ And fear not them who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

⁴ And I say to you, my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

⁶ Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; ⁷ And to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

⁹ There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

¹¹ Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

⁸ (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, grieved his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

¹³ And I heard a voice from heaven, saying to me, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth: Verily, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works follow them.

⁶ And Pharaoh commanded the same day the task-masters of the people, and their officers, saying, ⁷ Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore; let them go and gather straw for themselves. ⁸ And the number of the bricks which they made heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish aught thereof; for they are idle: therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

¹⁵ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why dealest thou thus with thy servants? ¹⁶ There is no straw given to thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thy own people. ¹⁷ But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go, and do sacrifice to the LORD. ¹⁸ Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the number of bricks. ¹⁹ And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not diminish aught from your bricks of your daily task.

³ And the children of Israel cried to the LORD; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

⁷ (39:4)Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not to them.

³ And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage in which thou wast made to serve, ⁴ That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

⁵ Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried: ²³ And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

²⁷ And as it is appointed to men once to die, but after this the judgment:

¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly.

²⁷ And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is sorrowful within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not told me?

¹⁶ Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life. ¹⁶ I lothe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity.

²⁸ He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

³⁰ To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.

⁶ Give strong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine to those that are of heavy hearts.

¹⁸ Why was I brought into the world to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

¹⁵ And if thou dealest thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

⁴ If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun rose that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

⁶ And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

¹⁴ Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

⁶ Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath encompassed me with his net.

⁸ He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.

¹² His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp around my tabernacle.

⁸ (31:7)I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;

⁸ (88:7)Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.

²⁷ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over by my God?

⁷ He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.

⁹ He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

⁶ Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths.

⁷ The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful food.

¹⁹ How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow my spittle?

²⁰ So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty food.

⁹ (102:8)My enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are enraged against me are sworn against me.

¹¹ We all roar like bears, and mourn bitterly like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us.

⁸ Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.

⁵ And it was so, when the days of their feasting were ended, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.

²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

¹⁴ Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions:

⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?

¹¹ Revive me, O LORD, for thy name's sake: for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble.
