²¹ before I go where I will not return from, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death;

²³ But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

¹⁴ For we must die, and are like water spilled on the ground, which can’t be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that makes the day black terrify it.

¹³ For now I should have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,

⁸ The eye of him who sees me will see me no more. Your eyes will be on me, but I will not be. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will come up no more. ¹⁰ He will return no more to his house, neither will his place know him any more.

¹⁰ But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes and dries up, ¹² so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they will not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep. ¹³ “Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would keep me secret until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time and remember me! ¹⁴ If a man dies, will he live again? I would wait all the days of my warfare, until my release should come.

²² For when a few years have come, I will go the way of no return.

⁴ Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.

¹¹ Is your loving kindness declared in the grave? Or your faithfulness in Destruction? ¹² Are your wonders made known in the dark? Or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

¹¹ I said, “I won’t see Yah, Yah in the land of the living. I will see man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

⁶ They didn’t say, ‘Where is Yahweh who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no one passed through, and where no man lived?’
