¹ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered, ² “Shouldn’t the multitude of words be answered? Should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should your boastings make men hold their peace? When you mock, will no man make you ashamed? ⁴ For you say, ‘My doctrine is pure. I am clean in your eyes.’ ⁵ But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against you, ⁶ that he would show you the secrets of wisdom! For true wisdom has two sides. Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves. ⁷ “Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of the Almighty? ⁸ They are high as heaven. What can you do? They are deeper than Sheol. What can you know? ⁹ Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. ¹⁰ If he passes by, or confines, or convenes a court, then who can oppose him? ¹¹ For he knows false men. He sees iniquity also, even though he doesn’t consider it. ¹² An empty-headed man becomes wise when a man is born as a wild donkey’s colt. ¹³ “If you set your heart aright, stretch out your hands toward him. ¹⁴ If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away. Don’t let unrighteousness dwell in your tents. ¹⁵ Surely then you will lift up your face without spot; Yes, you will be steadfast, and will not fear: ¹⁶ for you will forget your misery. You will remember it like waters that have passed away. ¹⁷ Life will be clearer than the noonday. Though there is darkness, it will be as the morning. ¹⁸ You will be secure, because there is hope. Yes, you will search, and will take your rest in safety. ¹⁹ Also you will lie down, and no one will make you afraid. Yes, many will court your favor. ²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked will fail. They will have no way to flee. Their hope will be the giving up of the spirit.”

¹¹ Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.

¹ Then Zophar the Naamathite answered,

² “How long will you speak these things? Shall the words of your mouth be a mighty wind?

³ Shall vain words have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer?

² “How long will you hunt for words? Consider, and afterwards we will speak.

¹¹ An evil speaker won’t be established in the earth. Evil will hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely.

¹⁸ Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also were conversing with him. Some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign deities,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

¹⁹ So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

⁴ I am like one who is a joke to his neighbor, I, who called on God, and he answered. The just, the blameless man is a joke.

⁴ But you are forgers of lies. You are all physicians of no value.

⁹ Is it good that he should search you out? Or as one deceives a man, will you deceive him?

² “Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind? ³ Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches with which he can do no good?

² Surely there are mockers with me. My eye dwells on their provocation.

³ Allow me, and I also will speak; After I have spoken, mock on.

²⁵ If it isn’t so now, who will prove me a liar, and make my speech worth nothing?”

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,

¹⁶ Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed their teeth at me.

¹⁶ Fill their faces with confusion, that they may seek your name, Yahweh.

¹⁷ I didn’t sit in the assembly of those who make merry and rejoice. I sat alone because of your hand, for you have filled me with indignation.

¹⁴ If any man doesn’t obey our word in this letter, note that man, that you have no company with him, to the end that he may be ashamed.

⁸ and soundness of speech that can’t be condemned, that he who opposes you may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us.

¹⁸ They said to you, “In the last time there will be mockers, walking after their own ungodly lusts.”

¹⁰ Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

²⁹ Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous. ³⁰ Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?

²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I do to you, you watcher of men? Why have you set me as a mark for you, so that I am a burden to myself?

² “Truly I know that it is so, but how can man be just with God? ³ If he is pleased to contend with him, he can’t answer him one time in a thousand.

⁷ Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.

⁵ For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, God has taken away my right: ⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am considered a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without disobedience.’

² “Do you think this to be your right, or do you say, ‘My righteousness is more than God’s,’

¹⁵ But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear,

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him! That I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would set my cause in order before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would tell me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would listen to me. ⁷ There the upright might reason with him, so I should be delivered forever from my judge.

³⁵ oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

⁶ Behold, I am toward God even as you are. I am also formed out of the clay. ⁷ Behold, my terror will not make you afraid, neither will my pressure be heavy on you. ⁸ “Surely you have spoken in my hearing, I have heard the voice of your words, saying, ⁹ ‘I am clean, without disobedience. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Behold, he finds occasions against me. He counts me for his enemy. ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks. He marks all my paths.’ ¹² “Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just, for God is greater than man. ¹³ Why do you strive against him, because he doesn’t give account of any of his matters? ¹⁴ For God speaks once, yes twice, though man pays no attention. ¹⁵ In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, in slumbering on the bed; ¹⁶ Then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction, ¹⁷ that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. ¹⁸ He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

¹ Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind, ² “Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

¹ Moreover Yahweh answered Job, ² “Shall he who argues contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” ³ Then Job answered Yahweh, ⁴ “Behold, I am of small account. What will I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. ⁵ I have spoken once, and I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

⁷ It was so, that after Yahweh had spoken these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends; for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

²⁹ The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

¹³ “After all that has come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant,

⁴ God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?

⁵ For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.

⁸ Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?

¹¹ Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you?

²⁸ To man he said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding.’”

¹⁴ The friendship of Yahweh is with those who fear him. He will show them his covenant.

¹⁰ He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us for our iniquities.

⁴³ He rescued them many times, but they were rebellious in their counsel, and were brought low in their iniquity. ⁴⁴ Nevertheless he regarded their distress, when he heard their cry. ⁴⁵ He remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses. ⁴⁶ He made them also to be pitied by all those who carried them captive.

²² It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail.

²⁸ but there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has made known to king Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head on your bed, are these:

⁴⁷ The king answered to Daniel, and said, “Of a truth your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you have been able to reveal this secret.”

³⁵ that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.”

⁹ But as it is written, “Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, which didn’t enter into the heart of man, these God has prepared for those who love him.” ¹⁰ But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. ¹¹ For who among men knows the things of a man, except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of God, except God’s Spirit.

⁵ which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit,

⁹ who does great things that can’t be fathomed, marvelous things without number;

¹⁴ Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways. How small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?”

²³ We can’t reach the Almighty. He is exalted in power. In justice and great righteousness, he will not oppress.

¹⁹ Your way was through the sea; your paths through the great waters. Your footsteps were not known.

³ Great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised! His greatness is unsearchable.

¹¹ He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can’t find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.

²⁸ Haven’t you known? Haven’t you heard? The everlasting God, Yahweh, the Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn’t faint. He isn’t weary. His understanding is unsearchable.

²⁷ All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him.

³³ Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!

¹⁰ But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

¹⁶ “For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct him?” But we have Christ’s mind.

⁸ To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

¹⁸ “But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can’t contain you; how much less this house which I have built!

¹² “Isn’t God in the heights of heaven? See the height of the stars, how high they are!

⁶ Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering.

⁵ Look to the skies, and see. See the skies, which are higher than you.

¹¹ For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his loving kindness toward those who fear him.

⁶ This knowledge is beyond me. It’s lofty. I can’t attain it. ⁷ Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? ⁸ If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there!

¹³ let them praise Yahweh’s name, for his name alone is exalted. His glory is above the earth and the heavens.

² It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. ³ As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.

⁹ “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

² Though they dig into Sheol, there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down.

¹⁸ may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, ¹⁹ and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

²⁴ For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole sky. ²⁵ He establishes the force of the wind. Yes, he measures out the waters by measure.

⁵ By awesome deeds of righteousness, you answer us, God of our salvation. You who are the hope of all the ends of the earth, of those who are far away on the sea. ⁶ By your power, you form the mountains, having armed yourself with strength. ⁷ You still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. ⁸ They also who dwell in faraway places are afraid at your wonders. You call the morning’s dawn and the evening with songs of joy.

⁹ If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, ¹⁰ even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and Yahweh had delivered them up?

¹⁸ For he wounds and binds up. He injures and his hands make whole.

¹² Behold, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, ‘What are you doing?’ ¹³ “God will not withdraw his anger. The helpers of Rahab stoop under him.

¹⁴ Behold, he breaks down, and it can’t be built again. He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.

²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? When he hides his face, who then can see him? He is over a nation or a man alike,

⁸ “Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,

⁸ You have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a large place.

²⁷ I am the first to say to Zion, ‘Behold, look at them;’ and I will give one who brings good news to Jerusalem.

³⁵ All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and no one can stop his hand, or ask him, “What are you doing?”

⁷ “To the angel of the assembly in Philadelphia write: “He who is holy, he who is true, he who has the key of David, he who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says these things:

¹³ You say, ‘What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he doesn’t see. He walks on the vault of the sky.’

²¹ “For his eyes are on the ways of a man. He sees all his goings. ²² There is no darkness, nor thick gloom, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. ²³ For he doesn’t need to consider a man further, that he should go before God in judgment.

¹¹ He says in his heart, “God has forgotten. He hides his face. He will never see it.”

¹⁴ But you do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless.

²² You have seen it, Yahweh. Don’t keep silent. Lord, don’t be far from me.

¹¹ Yahweh knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, don’t marvel at the matter, for one official is eyed by a higher one, and there are officials over them.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it? ¹⁰ “I, Yahweh, search the mind. I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.”

² They don’t consider in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness. Now their own deeds have engulfed them. They are before my face.

¹³ You who have purer eyes than to see evil, and who cannot look on perversity, why do you tolerate those who deal treacherously, and keep silent when the wicked swallows up the man who is more righteous than he,

²⁴ But Jesus didn’t entrust himself to them, because he knew everyone, ²⁵ and because he didn’t need for anyone to testify concerning man; for he himself knew what was in man.

¹³ There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.

²³ I will kill her children with Death, and all the assemblies will know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness; the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.

⁵ Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?

² “No doubt, but you are the people, and wisdom will die with you. ³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Yes, who doesn’t know such things as these?

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

⁵ “Who has set the wild donkey free? Or who has loosened the bonds of the swift donkey, ⁶ whose home I have made the wilderness, and the salt land his dwelling place? ⁷ He scorns the tumult of the city, neither does he hear the shouting of the driver. ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, He searches after every green thing.

⁵ Behold, I was born in iniquity. My mother conceived me in sin.

⁹ Surely men of low degree are just a breath, and men of high degree are a lie. In the balances they will go up. They are together lighter than a breath. ¹⁰ Don’t trust in oppression. Don’t become vain in robbery. If riches increase, don’t set your heart on them.

²² I was so senseless and ignorant. I was a brute beast before you.

⁶ A senseless man doesn’t know, neither does a fool understand this:

² “Surely I am the most ignorant man, and don’t have a man’s understanding. ³ I have not learned wisdom, neither do I have the knowledge of the Holy One. ⁴ Who has ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if you know?

¹⁸ I said in my heart, “As for the sons of men, God tests them, so that they may see that they themselves are like animals.

²⁴ a wild donkey used to the wilderness, that sniffs the wind in her craving. When she is in heat, who can turn her away? All those who seek her will not weary themselves. In her month, they will find her.

²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

¹⁶ Be of the same mind one toward another. Don’t set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Don’t be wise in your own conceits.

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself. If anyone thinks that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool, that he may become wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He has taken the wise in their craftiness.” ²⁰ And again, “The Lord knows the reasoning of the wise, that it is worthless.”

³ We also all once lived among them in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

²⁰ But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed. ¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

³ Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you are returning to Yahweh with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts to Yahweh, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.”

¹⁴ He did that which was evil, because he didn’t set his heart to seek Yahweh.

³ Nevertheless there are good things found in you, in that you have put away the Asheroth out of the land, and have set your heart to seek God.”

⁸ “But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God,

⁵ If you want to seek God diligently, make your supplication to the Almighty. ⁶ If you were pure and upright, surely now he would awaken for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous.

²¹ “Acquaint yourself with him, now, and be at peace. By it, good will come to you. ²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

³¹ Princes shall come out of Egypt. Ethiopia shall hurry to stretch out her hands to God.

⁸ and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God.

⁹ My eyes are dim from grief. I have called on you daily, Yahweh. I have spread out my hands to you.

⁶ I spread out my hands to you. My soul thirsts for you, like a parched land. Selah.

⁴⁷ That servant, who knew his lord’s will, and didn’t prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes,

⁷ “Remember, now, whoever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?

⁵ Isn’t your wickedness great? Neither is there any end to your iniquities.

²³ If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up, if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents.

³² Teach me that which I don’t see. If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’?

² I will be careful to live a blameless life. When will you come to me? I will walk within my house with a blameless heart.

¹⁵ When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

³⁰ “Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways,” says the Lord Yahweh. “Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity will not be your ruin. ³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel?

³ Then he said to me, “This is the curse that goes out over the surface of the whole land; for everyone who steals shall be cut off according to it on the one side; and everyone who swears falsely shall be cut off according to it on the other side. ⁴ I will cause it to go out,” says Yahweh of Armies, “and it will enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him who swears falsely by my name; and it will remain in the middle of his house, and will destroy it with its timber and its stones.”

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded.

⁵ but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell. ⁶ Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still will not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction.

²⁶ For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty, and will lift up your face to God.

¹ By David. Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

¹ For the Chief Musician. By the sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

⁶ For he will never be shaken. The righteous will be remembered forever. ⁷ He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in Yahweh. ⁸ His heart is established. He will not be afraid in the end when he sees his adversaries.

⁶ Then I wouldn’t be disappointed, when I consider all of your commandments. ⁷ I will give thanks to you with uprightness of heart, when I learn your righteous judgments.

²⁶ In the fear of Yahweh is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children.

¹ The wicked flee when no one pursues; but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

¹² For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

⁸ I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.

²⁸ Now, little children, remain in him, that when he appears, we may have boldness, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

¹⁹ And by this we know that we are of the truth, and persuade our hearts before him, ²⁰ because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have boldness toward God; ²² so whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.

¹¹ I will establish my covenant with you: All flesh will not be cut off any more by the waters of the flood. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

⁵¹ Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, “For”, he said, “God has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.”

¹⁵ My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;

¹¹ or darkness, so that you can not see, and floods of waters cover you.

⁷ Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

²⁰ For he shall not often reflect on the days of his life; because God occupies him with the joy of his heart.

¹ In that day you will say, “I will give thanks to you, Yahweh; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me. ² Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation.”

⁴ “Don’t be afraid, for you will not be ashamed. Don’t be confounded, for you will not be disappointed. For you will forget the shame of your youth. You will remember the reproach of your widowhood no more.

⁹ “For this is like the waters of Noah to me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah will no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.

¹⁶ so that he who blesses himself in the earth will bless himself in the God of truth; and he who swears in the earth will swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hidden from my eyes.

²¹ A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn’t remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a human being is born into the world.

¹⁴ I told him, “My lord, you know.” He said to me, “These are those who came out of the great suffering.They washed their robes, and made them white in the Lamb’s blood. ¹⁵ Therefore they are before the throne of God, they serve him day and night in his temple. He who sits on the throne will spread his tabernacle over them. ¹⁶ They will never be hungry or thirsty any more. The sun won’t beat on them, nor any heat; ¹⁷ for the Lamb who is in the middle of the throne shepherds them and leads them to springs of life-giving waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

¹⁰ Therefore David blessed Yahweh before all the assembly; and David said, “You are blessed, Yahweh, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever.

¹¹ Then came there to him all his brothers, and all his sisters, and all those who had been of his acquaintance before, and ate bread with him in his house. They comforted him, and consoled him concerning all the evil that Yahweh had brought on him. Everyone also gave him a piece of money, and everyone a ring of gold. ¹² So Yahweh blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys. ¹³ He had also seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ He called the name of the first, Jemimah; and the name of the second, Keziah; and the name of the third, Keren Happuch. ¹⁵ In all the land were no women found so beautiful as the daughters of Job. Their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. ¹⁶ After this Job lived one hundred forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, to four generations. ¹⁷ So Job died, being old and full of days.

⁶ he will make your righteousness shine out like light, and your justice as the noon day sun.

¹⁴ They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green,

⁴ Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, gracious, merciful, and righteous.

¹⁸ But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light that shines more and more until the perfect day.

⁸ Then your light will break out as the morning, and your healing will appear quickly; then your righteousness shall go before you, and Yahweh’s glory will be your rear guard. ⁹ Then you will call, and Yahweh will answer. You will cry for help, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ “If you take away from among you the yoke, finger pointing, and speaking wickedly; ¹⁰ and if you pour out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will rise in darkness, and your obscurity will be as the noonday;

³ Let’s acknowledge Yahweh. Let’s press on to know Yahweh. As surely as the sun rises, Yahweh will appear. He will come to us like the rain, like the spring rain that waters the earth.”

⁸ Don’t rejoice against me, my enemy. When I fall, I will arise. When I sit in darkness, Yahweh will be a light to me. ⁹ I will bear the indignation of Yahweh, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my case, and executes judgment for me. He will bring me out to the light. I will see his righteousness.

⁶ It will happen in that day, that there will not be light, cold, or frost. ⁷ It will be a unique day which is known to Yahweh; not day, and not night; but it will come to pass, that at evening time there will be light.

² But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall.

²⁶ It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. ²⁷ He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law, ²⁸ then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, ²⁹ “Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace; ³⁰ for my eyes have seen your salvation, ³¹ which you have prepared before the face of all peoples; ³² a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.”

⁵ Your threshing shall continue until the vintage, and the vintage shall continue until the sowing time. You shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. ⁶ “‘I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and no one will make you afraid. I will remove evil animals out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope.

²⁷ You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you. You will pay your vows. ²⁸ You will also decree a thing, and it will be established to you. Light will shine on your ways. ²⁹ When they cast down, you will say, ‘be lifted up.’ He will save the humble person.

⁵ I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for Yahweh sustains me.

⁸ In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.

⁵ Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him: my Savior, my helper, and my God.

²⁴ When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet. ²⁵ Don’t be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it comes; ²⁶ for Yahweh will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being taken.

³² The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge.

³ Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; ⁴ and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: ⁵ and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

²⁷ to whom God was pleased to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

²⁶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his army. ²⁷ Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?” ²⁸ They said, “We saw plainly that Yahweh was with you. We said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, even between us and you, and let’s make a covenant with you, ²⁹ that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.’ You are now the blessed of Yahweh.” ³⁰ He made them a feast, and they ate and drank. ³¹ They rose up some time in the morning, and swore an oath to one another. Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

⁶ “‘I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and no one will make you afraid. I will remove evil animals out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

⁸ Now therefore, take to yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept him, that I not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.” ⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did what Yahweh commanded them, and Yahweh accepted Job.

¹² The daughter of Tyre comes with a gift. The rich among the people entreat your favor.

⁶ Many will entreat the favor of a ruler, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.

¹⁴ Yahweh says: “The labor of Egypt, and the merchandise of Ethiopia, and the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you, and they will be yours. They will go after you. They shall come over in chains. They will bow down to you. They will make supplication to you: ‘Surely God is in you; and there is no one else. There is no other god.

¹⁴ The sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you; and all those who despised you will bow themselves down at the soles of your feet. They will call you Yahweh’s City, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

⁹ Behold, I give some of the synagogue of Satan, of those who say they are Jews, and they are not, but lie—behold, I will make them to come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.

¹⁶ I also will do this to you: I will appoint terror over you, even consumption and fever, that shall consume the eyes, and make the soul to pine away. You will sow your seed in vain, for your enemies will eat it.

⁶⁵ Among these nations you will find no ease, and there will be no rest for the sole of your foot; but Yahweh will give you there a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and pining of soul.

¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God. The hope of the godless man will perish, ¹⁴ Whose confidence will break apart, Whose trust is a spider’s web.

⁵ He who denounces his friends for plunder, Even the eyes of his children will fail.

¹⁴ He will be rooted out of the security of his tent. He will be brought to the king of terrors.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

²² For it hurls at him, and does not spare, as he flees away from his hand.

¹⁶ “If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

²² There is no darkness, nor thick gloom, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

³ I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry. My eyes fail looking for my God.

²⁴ What the wicked fear, will overtake them, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

²⁰ Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.

¹⁷ Our eyes still fail, looking in vain for our help. In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

¹⁴ Flight will perish from the swift; and the strong won’t strengthen his force; neither shall the mighty deliver himself;

¹⁹ As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; Or he went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a snake bit him. ²⁰ Won’t the day of Yahweh be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said, “Strike the tops of the pillars, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will kill the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape. ² Though they dig into Sheol, there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down. ³ Though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out from there; and though they be hidden from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.

²³ In Hades, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom. ²⁴ He cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue! For I am in anguish in this flame.’ ²⁵ “But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in the same way, bad things. But here he is now comforted, and you are in anguish. ²⁶ Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that no one may cross over from there to us.’

³ how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation—which at the first having been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard,
