These were the leaders of the priests and their associates in the time of Jeshua. ⁸ The Levites included Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, who with his associates was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving. ⁹ Bakbukiah and Unni and their associates stood opposite them in the service. ¹⁰ Jeshua was the father of Joiakim, and Joiakim was the father of Eliashib, and Eliashib was the father of Joiada, ¹¹ And Joiada was the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan was the father of Jaddua. ¹² In the days of Joiakim there were priests, heads of families: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah; ¹³ of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan; ¹⁴ of Malluchi, Jonathan; of Shecaniah, Joseph; ¹⁵ of Harim, Adna; of Meraioth, Helkai; ¹⁶ of Iddo, Zechariah; of Ginnethon, Meshullam; ¹⁷ of Abijah, Zichri; of Miniamin [and] Moadiah, Piltai; ¹⁸ of Bilgah, Shammua; of Shemaiah, Jehonathan; ¹⁹ of Joiarib, Mattenai; of Jedaiah, Uzzi; ²⁰ of Sallu, Kallai; of Amok, Eber; ²¹ of Hilkiah, Hashabiah; of Jedaiah, Nethanel. ²² The Levites the chiefs of the families in the days of Eliasib, and Joiada, and Johanan, and Jeddoa, were recorded, and the priests in the reign of Darius the Persian. ²³ The leaders of the ancestors of Levi were written in the Book of Annals until the time of Eliashib's son Johanan. ²⁴ The leaders of the Levites were: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Kadmiel's son Jeshua, along with their associates who served opposite them to give praise and thanks, division by division, according to the commands given by David the man of God. ²⁵ Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers who guarded the store houses of the gates. ²⁶ These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of Ezra the priest and scribe. ²⁷ At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, they invited the Levites to come from wherever they lived to Jerusalem so they could celebrate the dedication with joy, thanksgiving, and songs, accompanied by cymbals, lyres, and harps. ²⁸ The singers were gathered from the circuit all around Jerusalem and from the villages of Netophathite, ²⁹ from Beth-gilgal, and from the area of Geba and Azmaveth, because the singers had built villages for themselves in the vicinity of Jerusalem. ³⁰ And the priests and the Levites purified themselves; and they purified the people, and the gates and the wall. ³¹ Then I brought up the leaders of Judah to the crest of the wall, and appointed two large thanksgiving choirs, the first of which proceeded on the wall to the right toward the Dung Gate. ³² Hoshaiah and half of the rulers of Judah followed after them, ³³ and Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, ³⁴ Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah, ³⁵ Some of the priests' sons were trumpeters, including Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph, ³⁶ with his associates Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani, accompanied by the musical instruments of David, the man of God. Ezra the scribe led the procession. ³⁷ At the Fountain Gate opposite them they went up the steps of the city of David, at the assent to the wall, over the house of David, and up to the Water Gate to the east. ³⁸ The second thanksgiving choir approached opposite them, and I followed them. Half of the people stood on the crest of the wall from beyond the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, ³⁹ and from above the Ephraim Gate, above the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. They stopped at the Guard Gate. ⁴⁰ So did the two companies for thanksgiving place themselves in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me. ⁴¹ and the priests Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah with the trumpets; ⁴² and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. The singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer. ⁴³ And on that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced. Because God had given them great joy, therefore their wives and their children rejoiced, and the joy of Jerusalem was heard at a great distance. ⁴⁴ And at that time men were appointed over the chambers of the treasures for the heave-offerings, for the first-fruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them, out of the fields of the cities, the portions assigned by the law for the priests and the Levites; for Judah rejoiced over the priests, and over the Levites that waited. ⁴⁵ They performed the duty of their God, and the duty of the purification, and so did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son. ⁴⁶ For of old, in the days of David and Asaph, there were the chiefs of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgivings to God. ⁴⁷ So all of Israel in the days of Zerubbabel and in the days of Nehemiah gave the daily food portions of the singers and gatekeepers. And they set apart that which was for the Levites, and the Levites set apart that which was for the descendants of Aaron.

¹⁷ The descendants of Jehoiachin the captive: Shealtiel his son, ¹⁸ Malkiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama and Nedabiah. ¹⁹ The sons of Pedaiah: Zerubbabel and Shimei. The sons of Zerubbabel: Meshullam and Hananiah. Shelomith was their sister.

¹ Now these were the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exile whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon carried captive to Babylonia. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own city. ² who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:

⁸ And in the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all they who had come out of the captivity to Jerusalem, began. And they chose the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.

² they came to Zorobabel and to the chiefs of the families, and said, Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek our God, and we sacrifice to him, from the days of Asaradan, king of Assur, who brought us here.

² Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, went to work building the house of God at Jerusalem. The prophets of God were with them, helping them.

⁷ who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:

¹ In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

¹² Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD, their God, and the words of Haggai, the prophet, as the LORD, their God, had sent him; and the people feared the LORD.

¹⁴ And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and did the work on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

² "Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

²¹ "Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, 'I will shake the heavens and the earth. ²² and I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the military strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, every one by the sword of another! ²³ "On that day," declared the LORD Almighty, "I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel," declared the LORD. "I will make you important like a signet (signature) ring, because I have chosen you," proclaimed the LORD Almighty.

¹ And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. ² The LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan. Yes, the LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you. Isn't this a burning stick plucked out of the fire?" ³ Now Joshua was clothed with filthy clothes, and stood before the Angel. ⁴ So the angel continued to tell those who were standing in his presence, "Remove his filthy clothes." And he said to Joshua, "Look how I've removed your iniquity. Now I'm clothing you with fine garments." ⁵ I said, "Let them set a clean turban on his head." So they set a clean turban on his head, and clothed him; and the angel of the LORD was standing by. ⁶ Then the angel of the LORD gave this charge to Joshua: ⁷ 'Thus sayeth the LORD of Hosts: If thou wilt walk in my ways, and keep my watch: thou shalt rule my house, and keep my courts, and I will give thee place among these that stand here. ⁸ Listen, please, O Joshua the high priest, you and your companions that are sitting before you. For the men are a sign that, look, I am going to bring my servant the Branch. ⁹ "Look at the stone I set before you Joshua. There are seven eyes on one stone. I will engrave the inscription on it," said the LORD Almighty, "and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day."

⁶ Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel, saying, 'Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts. ⁷ 'Who are you O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground, and he will bring out the top stone amid the shouts of "Grace, grace to it!" '" ⁸ Then the word of the LORD came to me again: ⁹ "The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house. His hands will also finish it! You should know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. ¹⁰ For whoever has despised the day of small things will rejoice and will see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel." These seven are the eyes of the LORD which are ranging throughout the whole earth.

¹¹ Take the silver and gold and make a crown, and set it on the head of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest.

¹² After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, ¹³ Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,

⁵ In the time of Herod king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah, and whose wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Aaron.

¹⁰ Of the priests: Jedaiah; Jehoiarib; Jakin;

¹⁰ Of the priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, Jachin,

¹⁸ the twenty-third to Delaiah, and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.

² Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brothers the priests and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his brothers, stood up and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.

³³ Those who were musicians, heads of Levite families, stayed in the rooms of the temple and were exempt from other duties because they were responsible for the work day and night.

⁴⁸ the sons of Lebana,

⁴ Then stood upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice to the LORD their God.

⁹ And the Levites; Jeshua son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel; ¹⁰ and their brothers, Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan, ¹¹ Mica, Rehob, Hashabiah, ¹² Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah, ¹³ Hodiah, Bani, and Beninu.

¹⁷ and Mattaniah son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who led the thanksgiving prayer, and Bakbukiah, second among his relatives, and Abda son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.

²² The chief officer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, from the descendants of Asaph, the singers over the work of the house of God.

²⁴ The leaders of the Levites were: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Kadmiel's son Jeshua, along with their associates who served opposite them to give praise and thanks, division by division, according to the commands given by David the man of God.

¹ Behold, praise the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD. ² Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and praise the LORD. ³ May the LORD who fashions heaven and earth bless you from Zion.

³ The children of Amram: Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ⁴ Eleazar was the father of Phinehas, Phinehas the father of Abishua, ⁵ Abishua the father of Bukki, Bukki the father of Uzzi, ⁶ Uzzi the father of Zerahiah, Zerahiah the father of Meraioth, ⁷ Meraioth the father of Amariah, Amariah the father of Ahitub, ⁸ Ahitub the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Ahimaaz, ⁹ Ahimaaz the father of Azariah, Azariah the father of Johanan, ¹⁰ Johanan was the father of Azariah. It was he who served as priest in the temple Solomon built in Jerusalem), ¹¹ Azariah the father of Amariah, Amariah the father of Ahitub, ¹² Ahitub the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Shallum, ¹³ Shallum the father of Hilkiah, Hilkiah the father of Azariah, ¹⁴ Azariah the father of Seraiah, and Seraiah the father of Jehozadak. ¹⁵ Jehozadak was deported when the LORD sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.

¹ Then Eliashib the high priest and his brothers the priests arose and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and erected its doors. They consecrated it up to the Tower of the Hundred and up to the Tower of Hananel.

²⁶ These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of Ezra the priest and scribe.

⁴ Before this, Eliashib the priest had been placed over the rooms of the house of our God. He was a friend of Tobiah.

⁷ And I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil which Eliashib did for Tobiah in preparing him a room in the courts of the house of God.

²⁸ One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the chief priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, so I sent him away from me.

³³ Those who were musicians, heads of Levite families, stayed in the rooms of the temple and were exempt from other duties because they were responsible for the work day and night. ³⁴ All these were heads of Levite families, chiefs as listed in their genealogy, and they lived in Jerusalem.

¹² He said to them: "You are the heads of the Levite families. You and your brothers must perform the ceremonies to make yourselves holy. Then bring the Ark of the LORD the God of Israel to the place I prepared for it.

⁶ And Shemaiah the son of Nethanel the scribe, who was of the Levites, wrote them in the presence of the king and the princes and Zadok the priest and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar and the heads of the fathers of the priests and of the Levites, one fathers' house being taken for Eleazar and one taken for Ithamar. ⁷ The first lot fell to Jehoiarib. The second to Jedaiah. ⁸ the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim, ⁹ the fifth to Malkijah, the sixth to Mijamin, ¹⁰ the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah, ¹¹ the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah, ¹² the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim, ¹³ the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab, ¹⁴ the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer, ¹⁵ the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez, ¹⁶ the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel, ¹⁷ the twenty-first to Jakin, the twenty-second to Gamul, ¹⁸ the twenty-third to Delaiah, and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah. ¹⁹ This was their ordering in their service, to come into the house of the LORD according to the ordinance given to them by Aaron their father, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him. ²⁰ And as for the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah. ²¹ Of Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah the chief. ²² Of the Izharites, Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth, Jahath. ²³ And the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth. ²⁴ The sons of Uzziel: Micah; of the sons of Micah, Shamir. ²⁵ The brother of Micah: Isshiah; of the sons of Isshiah, Zechariah. ²⁶ The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The son of Jaaziah: Beno. ²⁷ The sons of Merari: of Jaaziah, Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri. ²⁸ For Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons; ²⁹ Of Kish, the son of Kish: Jerahmeel. ³⁰ And the sons of Mushi: Mahli and Eder and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites by their families. ³¹ They drew lots as their relatives, Aaron's descendants, had done. They drew them in front of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the leaders of the families of the priests and Levites. The families of the oldest brother were treated the same way as those of the youngest.

¹⁰ Jeshua was the father of Joiakim, and Joiakim was the father of Eliashib, and Eliashib was the father of Joiada, ¹¹ And Joiada was the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan was the father of Jaddua. ¹² In the days of Joiakim there were priests, heads of families: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah; ¹³ of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan;

¹⁴ Of the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, a Merarite; ¹⁵ Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal and Mattaniah son of Mica, the son of Zicri, the son of Asaph; ¹⁶ Obadiah son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun; and Berekiah son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites. ¹⁷ The gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman and their brothers, Shallum their chief ¹⁸ being stationed at the King's Gate on the east, up to the present time. These were the gatekeepers belonging to the camp of the Levites. ¹⁹ Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his fellow gatekeepers from his family, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the tent just as their fathers had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD. ²⁰ In earlier times Phinehas son of Eleazar was in charge of the gatekeepers, and the LORD was with him. ²¹ Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. ²² Altogether, those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered two hundred and twelve. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had assigned the gatekeepers to their positions of trust. ²³ They and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the LORD, the house called the tent. ²⁴ The gatekeepers were on the four sides: east, west, north and south. ²⁵ Their brothers in their villages had to come from time to time and share their duties for seven-day periods. ²⁶ But the four principal gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God. ²⁷ They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning. ²⁸ Some of them were in charge of the articles used in the temple service; they counted them when they were brought in and when they were taken out. ²⁹ Others were assigned to take care of the furnishings and all the other articles of the sanctuary, as well as the flour and wine, and the oil, incense and spices. ³⁰ But some of the priests took care of mixing the spices. ³¹ A Levite named Mattithiah, the firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with the responsibility for baking the offering bread. ³² Some of their Kohathite brothers were in charge of preparing for every Sabbath the bread set out on the table. ³³ Those who were musicians, heads of Levite families, stayed in the rooms of the temple and were exempt from other duties because they were responsible for the work day and night. ³⁴ All these were heads of Levite families, chiefs as listed in their genealogy, and they lived in Jerusalem. ³⁵ Jeiel the father of Gibeon lived in Gibeon. His wife's name was Maacah, ³⁶ and his firstborn son was Abdon, followed by Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, ³⁷ Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth. ³⁸ Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They too lived near their relatives in Jerusalem. ³⁹ Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab and Esh-Baal. (Ish-Bosheth) ⁴⁰ The son of Jonathan: Merib-Baal, (Mephibosheth) who was the father of Micah. ⁴¹ The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz. ⁴² Ahaz was the father of Jadah, Jadah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth and Zimri, and Zimri was the father of Moza. ⁴³ Moza was the father of Binea; Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son and Azel his son. ⁴⁴ Azel had six sons, and these were their names: Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.

¹ This is the blessing with which Moses, the man of God, blessed the Israelites before his death.

⁶ Then the descendants of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal; and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the word that the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea concerning you and me.

²⁴ And the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is the truth."

¹ When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel. ² He also gathered all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. ³ The Levites thirty years old or older were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand. ⁴ David said: Of these, twenty-four thousand are to supervise the work of the LORD’s Temple and six thousand are to be officials and judges. ⁵ Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the LORD with musical instruments I have provided for that purpose. ⁶ David divided the Levites into groups corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. ⁷ Belonging to the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei. ⁸ The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the first, Zetham and Joel, three in all. ⁹ The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel and Haran, three in all. These were the heads of the families of Ladan. ¹⁰ The sons of Shimei: Jahath, Ziza, Jeush and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei, four in all. ¹¹ Jahath was the first and Ziza the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons so they were counted as one family with one assignment. ¹² The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel, four in all. ¹³ The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart, he and his descendants from generation to generation, to consecrate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices before the LORD, to minister before him and to pronounce blessings in his name as long as they live. ¹⁴ The sons of Moses the man of God were counted as part of the tribe of Levi. ¹⁵ The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. ¹⁶ The descendants of Gershom: Shubael was the first. ¹⁷ The descendants of Eliezer: Rehabiah was the first. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous. ¹⁸ The sons of Izhar: Shelomith was the first. ¹⁹ The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth. ²⁰ The sons of Uzziel: Micah the first and Isshiah the second. ²¹ The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. ²² Eleazar died without having sons: he had only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them. ²³ The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth, three in all. ²⁴ These were the descendants of Levi by their families, the heads of families as they were registered under their names and counted individually, that is, the workers twenty years old or more who served in the Temple of the LORD. ²⁵ For David had said: "Since the LORD, the God of Israel, has granted rest to his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem from generation to generation, ²⁶ the Levites no longer need to carry the Tabernacle or any of the articles used in its service." ²⁷ According to the last instructions of David, the Levites were counted from those twenty years old or more. ²⁸ The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the Temple of the LORD: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the House of God. ²⁹ They were in charge of the bread set out on the table, the flour for the grain offerings, the unleavened wafers, the baking and the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size. ³⁰ They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD. They were to do the same in the evening ³¹ and whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on Sabbaths and at New Moon festivals and at appointed feasts. They were to serve before the LORD regularly in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them. ³² So the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the Tent of Meeting, for the Holy Place and, under their brothers the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the Temple of the LORD.

¹ David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service some of the sons of Asaph and of Heman and of Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps and cymbals; and the number of those who performed their service was: ² of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah. The sons of Asaph were under the hand of Asaph, who prophesied at the order of the king. ³ Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising the LORD. ⁴ Of Heman: the sons of Heman; Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamtiezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth: ⁵ All these were sons of Heman, the king's seer in the words of God. And to make great his power God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. ⁶ All these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, harps and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman under the direction of the king. ⁷ They and their relatives who had been skillfully trained in singing to the LORD, numbered 288. ⁸ And they cast lots, for duty, the small as well as the great, the teacher as the pupil. ⁹ Now the first lot came out for Asaph to Joseph, the second for Gedaliah, he with his relatives and sons were twelve. ¹⁰ the third to Zaccur, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹¹ the fourth to Izri, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹² the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹³ the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁴ the seventh to Jesharelah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁵ the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁶ the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁷ the tenth to Shimei, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁸ the eleventh to Azarel, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁹ the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁰ the thirteenth to Shubael, his sons and his brothers, twelve; ²¹ the fourteenth, to Mattithiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; ²² the fifteenth Jerimoth. his sons and brethren, twelve; ²³ for the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁴ for the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁵ for the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁶ for the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons and his relatives, twelve;

¹⁴ And according to the order of David his father, he appointed the divisions of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required; and the gatekeepers by their divisions at every gate; for so David the man of God had commanded.

¹⁰ And the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, and the priests in their apparel with the trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with the cymbals, were positioned to praise the LORD, as described by King David of Israel. ¹¹ And they sang, praising and giving thanks unto the LORD because he is good, for his mercy endures for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, praising the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.

⁷ Furthermore, Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites taught the Law to the people while the people remained standing.

⁸ The Levites included Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, who with his associates was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving. ⁹ Bakbukiah and Unni and their associates stood opposite them in the service.

¹¹ But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

¹⁷ so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

¹⁴ Of the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, a Merarite; ¹⁵ Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal and Mattaniah son of Mica, the son of Zicri, the son of Asaph; ¹⁶ Obadiah son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun; and Berekiah son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites. ¹⁷ The gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman and their brothers, Shallum their chief

³² So the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the Tent of Meeting, for the Holy Place and, under their brothers the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the Temple of the LORD.

¹² These divisions of the gatekeepers, through their chief men, had duties for ministering in the Temple of the LORD, just as their relatives had.

¹⁵ The lot for the South Gate fell to Obed-Edom, and the lot for the storehouse fell to his sons.

¹⁷ and Mattaniah son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who led the thanksgiving prayer, and Bakbukiah, second among his relatives, and Abda son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun. ¹⁸ All of the Levites in the holy city numbered 284. ¹⁹ The Gatekeepers: Akkub, Talmon, and their relatives, who kept watch at the gates, numbered 172.

⁸ Then the lookout shouted: "Lord, I stand continually on the watchtower in the daytime, and every night I stay at my post.

⁶ this Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses, which the LORD the God of Israel gave. The king granted him all his requests, for the hand of the LORD was upon him.

¹¹ This is a copy of the letter King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra, the priest and the scribe-copyist, who put into writing the words of the orders of the LORD and of his rules for Israel:

⁹ And Nehemiah, the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the Law.

¹¹ And thou shall rejoice before LORD thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy man-servant, and thy maid-servant, and the Levite who is within thy gates, and the sojourner, and the fatherless, and the widow, who are in th

⁵ "The officers should speak to the army: If you have built a new house that has not been dedicated, you may go home. Otherwise, you might die in battle, and someone else will dedicate it.

¹² It was told to King David, "the LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and all that is his because of the ark of God." So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the city of David with jubilation.

⁸ David and all the people of Israel celebrated with all their might before God. They did it with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets.

⁴ David gathered together the sons of Aaron and the Levites:

¹⁶ Then David ordered the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers with instruments of song, musical instruments, stringed instruments, and cymbals, raising their voices for joy.

²⁸ And all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of a horn, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, playing loudly on lutes and harps.

⁵ Asaph was the head. Zechariah was second, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed Edom, and Jeiel with harps and lyres. Asaph played the cymbals.

⁴² and with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those making a sound, and instruments of the song of God; and the sons of Jeduthun were at the gate.

³¹ As for the Hebronites, Jeriah was their chief according to the genealogical records of their families. In the fortieth year of David's reign a search was made in the records, and capable men among the Hebronites were found at Jazer in Gilead.

¹³ the trumpeters and singers praised and thanked the LORD in unison. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and other musical instruments, they sang in praise to the LORD: "He is good; his mercy (lovingkindness) endures forever." Then the LORD’s Temple was filled with a cloud.

⁶ The priests were standing at their posts. So were the Levites who had the LORD's musical instruments that King David made for praising the LORD. They were saying: "his mercy endures forever." This he used to offer praise. The priests were opposite the Levites blowing trumpets while all Israel was standing there.

⁴ And he brought in the priests and the Levites, and assembled them in the east street, ⁵ And he said to them, "Hear me, O Levites! Sanctify yourselves now, and sanctify the house of the LORD, the God of your ancestors, and bring out the defilement from the sanctuary. ⁶ "Our ancestors were unfaithful and did what the LORD our God considered evil. They deserted him. They turned away from the LORD's tent and turned their backs on him. ⁷ They also shut the doors of the portico and extinguished the lamps. And they did not burn incense or offer burnt offerings in the sanctuary to the God of Israel. ⁸ That's why the LORD was angry with Judah and Jerusalem and made them an object of terror, horror, and derision, as you've seen with your own eyes. ⁹ For, see, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this. ¹⁰ Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, that his fierce anger may turn away from us. ¹¹ My sons, do not be negligent now. For the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, and that you should minister to Him and burn incense.

³⁰ And king Hezekiah and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise to the LORD with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. And they sang praises with gladness, and bowed their heads and worshipped.

¹⁶ And the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, and the rest of the returned exiles celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy.

¹⁵ And I gathered them together by the water that runneth toward Ahava, and there abode we three days. And when I looked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites there. ¹⁶ Then sent I to Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, the rulers, and Joiarib and Elnathan, which were men of understanding. ¹⁷ I sent them out to Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia; and I told them what they should tell Iddo, and his brothers the temple servants, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God. ¹⁸ And by the good hand of our God on us they brought us a man of understanding, from the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brothers, eighteen; ¹⁹ Hashabiah and Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari and 20 of his brothers and their sons; ²⁰ 220 descendants of the temple Servants whom David and the leaders had appointed to serve the Levites, listed by name.

¹⁷ The entire assembly of those who had returned from exile erected tents and lived in them. Indeed, from the days of Nun's son Joshua until that day the Israelites had not done so. Joy was everywhere,

²⁰ The rest of Israel the priests and the Levites lived in all the cities of Judah, each on his own property,

¹ A psalm; a song for the dedication of the house. Of David. I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have drawn me up, and have not made my enemies rejoice over me.

¹ To the chief musician. On Gittith. Of Asaph. Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob. ² Sing a song and strike the tambourine. Play the sweet sounding lyre with the harp. ³ Blow the ram's horn in the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day. ⁴ For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob;

¹ A Psalm, A Song for the Sabbath Day. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; ² to proclaim your gracious love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, ³ To do this on a ten-stringed instrument with a melody on a harp.

⁴ Shout joyfully to the LORD all the earth. Break out into joyful singing, and make music. ⁵ Make melody to the LORD with the harp, With the harp and the sound of melody." ⁶ With trumpets and the sound of a ram's horn shout in the presence of the LORD, the king!

¹ Shout for joy to the LORD, all you lands. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before His face with joyful singing.

³ Let them praise his name with dancing. Let them make music to him with tambourines and lyres.

² Praise him for his mighty acts. Praise him for his immense greatness. ³ Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet! Praise him with harp and lyre! ⁴ Praise him with tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flute. ⁵ Praise him with loud cymbals! Praise him with resounding cymbals!

⁴ Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

⁸ And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb; each one had a harp, and they had golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

⁵⁴ The descendants of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth Beth Joab, half the Manahathites, the Zorites,

¹⁶ Obadiah son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun; and Berekiah son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.

² Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come! Let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.

³⁰ "Are they not across the Jordan toward the setting sun? Are they in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks (big trees) of Moreh?

⁹ And the LORD said to Joshua, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. Therefore, the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

⁴³ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him to the camp at Gilgal.

¹⁷ From the territory of Benjamin they were given four cities: Gibeon, Geba,

⁶⁰ And from the tribe of Benjamin they were given Gibeon, Geba, Alemeth and Anathoth, together with their pasturelands. These towns, which were distributed among the Kohathite clans, were thirteen in all.

²⁴ the sons of Azmaveth--42;

³¹ The descendants of Benjamin from Geba, Micmash, Aija, Bethel and their settlements,

² Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods that are in your midst and purify yourselves and change your garments.

¹⁰ And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. They must wash their clothes,

¹⁵ And he said to the people, Be ready for the third day; do not come near [your] wives.

² "This is a requirement of the law the LORD has commanded: 'Tell the Israelites to bring you a red cow that is perfect, with no defects. Also, it must never have worn a yoke. ³ "'Give it to Eleazar the priest. It must be taken outside the camp and slaughtered in his presence. ⁴ »‘Eleazar the priest will take some of the blood with his finger and sprinkle it seven times toward the front of the tent of meeting. ⁵ and he burns the heifer in his eyes - her skin and her flesh and her blood, with her dung, he burns: ⁶ "'The priest will take some cedar wood, a hyssop sprig, and some red yarn and throw them onto the burning cow. ⁷ And let the priest wash his clothes and bathe his flesh in water, and then come into the host, and the priest shall be unclean unto the evening. ⁸ "'The person who burned the calf must also wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening. ⁹ And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from sin. ¹⁰ The one who gathers the ashes of the heifer will wash his garments; he will be unclean until evening. It will be an eternal decree for the Israelites and for one who dwells as an alien in their midst. ¹¹ He that touches the dead body of any man, shall be unclean for seven days. ¹² He shall purify himself with water on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean; but if he doesn’t purify himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean. ¹³ Whoever touches a dead person, the body of a man who has died, and doesn't purify himself, defiles the LORD's tabernacle; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel; because the water for impurity was not sprinkled on him, he shall be unclean. His uncleanness is yet on him. ¹⁴ This is the law when a man dies in a tent: everyone who comes into the tent and everyone who is in the tent, will be unclean seven days. ¹⁵ »‘Every container without a lid fastened on it is unclean. ¹⁶ "‘Whoever is outdoors and touches someone who was killed or has died naturally or anyone who touches a human bone or a grave will be unclean for seven days. ¹⁷ For the unclean person they will take from the powder of the burnt purification offering, and they will put running water into a container. ¹⁸ »‘A person who is clean will take a sprig of hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle the tent, all the furnishings, and all the people who were in the tent with the dead body. He must also sprinkle any person who has touched a human bone or a grave and any person who has touched someone who has been killed or who has died naturally. ¹⁹ The clean person will spatter the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he will purify him, and he will wash his garments; he will bathe in the waters, and in the evening he will be clean. ²⁰ But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean.

⁵ And he said to them, "Hear me, O Levites! Sanctify yourselves now, and sanctify the house of the LORD, the God of your ancestors, and bring out the defilement from the sanctuary.

³⁴ But the priests were few, and could not slay the whole burnt offering, so their brethren the Levites helped them, until the work was finished, and until the priests had purified themselves; for the Levites more zealously purified themselves than the priests.

²¹ So the Israelites who had returned from captivity ate the Passover with all who had consecrated themselves from the uncleanness of the nations of the land in order to seek the LORD God of Israel.

²² Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and to come as gate keepers to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, my God, and show mercy to me according to the greatness of your gracious love.

³⁰ I purified them from everything foreign, arranged duties for the priests and the Levites, each to his task,

⁵ When their time of feasting had concluded, Job would rise early in the morning to send for them and consecrate them to God. He would offer a burnt offering for each one, because Job thought, "Perhaps my children sinned by cursing God in their hearts." Job did this time and again.

¹ Every high priest is appointed from among men to represent them in matters relating to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

³ Because of this he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.

¹ David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.

¹ David held a meeting in Jerusalem for all the leaders of Israel, the leaders of the tribes, the leaders of the army units that served the king, the commanders of regiments and battalions, the officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, the palace officials, the soldiers, and the fighting men.

² Then Solomon assembled the respected leaders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes, and the leaders of the Israelite families. They came to Jerusalem to take the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD from the City of David, which is Zion.

¹³ I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal's well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down, and its gates which were consumed with fire.

¹³ The valley-gate repaired Hanun, and the inhabitants of Zanoah; they built it, and set up its doors, its locks and its bars, and a thousand cubits of the wall as far as the dung-gate. ¹⁴ But the Dung Gate was repaired by Malchiah the son of Rechab, the ruler of part of Beth-haccerem. He built it and set up its doors, its locks, and its bars.

³⁸ The second thanksgiving choir approached opposite them, and I followed them. Half of the people stood on the crest of the wall from beyond the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall,

⁴⁰ So did the two companies for thanksgiving place themselves in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me.

² "Make two trumpets of hammered silver to use for calling the people together and for breaking camp. ³ When they are sounded, all the people are to come together to you at the door of the Tent of meeting. ⁴ If only one of them is sounded, then the chiefs, the heads of the thousands of Israel, are to come to you. ⁵ "When short blasts are sounded, the tribes camped on the east will move out. ⁶ At the sound of a second loud note, the tents on the south side are to go forward: the loud note will be the sign to go forward. ⁷ `And in the assembling of the assembly ye blow, and do not shout; ⁸ The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets. This shall be a perpetual ordinance for you, throughout your generations. ⁹ When you wage war in your land against an enemy who is hostile to you, then sound an alarm with the trumpets. Then you will be remembered before the face of the LORD your God and be delivered from your enemies. ¹⁰ Also, when ye be merry in your feast days and in the first days of your months, ye shall blow the trumpets over your burnt sacrifices and peaceofferings, that it may be a remembrance of you before your God. I am the LORD your God."

⁴ And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of ram's horns in front of the ark. And the seventh day you shall go around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

³⁹ and Heman's associate Asaph, who served at his right hand: Asaph son of Berekiah, the son of Shimea, ⁴⁰ the son of Michael, the son of Baaseiah, the son of Malkijah, ⁴¹ the son of Ethni, the son of Zerah, the son of Adaiah, ⁴² the son of Ethan, the son of Zimmah, the son of Shimei, ⁴³ the son of Jahath, the son of Gershon, the son of Levi.

² of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah. The sons of Asaph were under the hand of Asaph, who prophesied at the order of the king.

¹⁰ Hosah the Merarite had sons: Shimri the first although he was not the firstborn, his father had appointed him the first, ¹¹ Hilkiah the second, Tabaliah the third and Zechariah the fourth. The sons and relatives of Hosah were thirteen in all.

¹² All the Levite musicians, including Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and their sons and relatives wore linen and played cymbals and stringed instruments as they stood east of the altar. Accompanied by 120 priests who played trumpets,

¹² "God is with us as our leader. His priests will sound their trumpets to call the army to fight you. Men of Israel do not wage war against the LORD the God of your ancestors. You will not succeed."

¹ After these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah,

¹ These were their patriarchal heads and those registered with them who came up with me from Babylon in the reign of king Artaxerxes:

⁵ "You sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David you improvise on musical instruments.

⁷ David captured the fortress of Zion, the city of David. ⁸ At that time, David had said, "Whoever intends to attack the Jebusites will have to climb up the water shaft to attack the lame and blind, who hate David." Therefore they say, "The blind and lame shall never come into the house." ⁹ David occupied the fortress, naming it the City of David. He built up the surroundings from the terrace ramparts inward.

¹⁴ Then I went on to the door of the fountain and to the king's pool: but there was no room for my beast to get through.

¹⁵ And the Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun the son of Colhozeh, the ruler of part of Mizpah. He built it and covered it, and set up its doors, its locks, and its bars, and the wall of the Pool of Shelah by the King's Garden, and to the stairs that go down from the City of David. ¹⁶ After him Nehemiah son of Azbuk, commander of half of the district of Beth Zur, repaired up to a point opposite the burial sites of David, and up to the artificial pool and to the house of the mighty warriors.

²⁶ and the temple servants who were living on Ophel repaired up to opposite the Water Gate on the east and the projecting tower.

¹ And all the people gathered as one man into the plaza before the Water Gate. And they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.

³ Ezra read from it, facing the plaza in front of the Water Gate, from early in the morning until mid-day in the presence of the men and women, as well as all who could understand. All the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.

¹⁶ And the people went out and brought in, and made themselves booths, each one upon his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the Water Gate, and in the street of the Gate of Ephraim.

⁸ Next to him Uzziel son of Harhaiah (goldsmiths) repaired. Next to him Hananiah son of the perfume-makers repaired. They restored Jerusalem up to the Broad Wall.

¹¹ Malkijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens.

³¹ Then I brought up the leaders of Judah to the crest of the wall, and appointed two large thanksgiving choirs, the first of which proceeded on the wall to the right toward the Dung Gate.

¹³ Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, four hundred cubits.

³ The sons of Hassenaah built the fish gate. They laid its beams, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

⁶ And the Old Gate was repaired by Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and set up its doors and its locks and its bars.

²⁵ Palal son of Uzai repaired opposite the Angle at the tower that juts out from the upper house of the king, at the courtyard of the guard. After him Pedaiah son of Parosh

³¹ After him Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired up to the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Enrollment Gate and up to the upper room of the corner. ³² Between the ascent of the corner and the sheep gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.

³⁸ "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when the city will be rebuilt for me from the Tower of Hananel to Corner Gate.

² The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard at the palace of the king of Judah

¹⁰ And in that day, saith the LORD, Hark! a cry from the fish gate, and a wailing from the second quarter, and a great crashing from the hills.

² There is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool which is called in Hebrew Bethesda. Around it are five colonnades.

³¹ Then I brought up the leaders of Judah to the crest of the wall, and appointed two large thanksgiving choirs, the first of which proceeded on the wall to the right toward the Dung Gate. ³² Hoshaiah and half of the rulers of Judah followed after them,

⁴ These I remember and I pour out my soul within me: that I would go with the multitude; I led them in procession to the house of God, with a voice of rejoicing and thanksgiving, a crowd celebrating a festival.

⁶ Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises to our King, sing praises. ⁷ For God is the king of all the earth; sing a psalm for edification. ⁸ God is king over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. ⁹ The nobles among the nations have joined the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted.

¹⁴ along with their relatives, 128 mighty, valiant men, and their overseer Zabdiel son of Haggedolim.

¹ To the chief musician. On Gittith. Of Asaph. Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob.

¹ Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.

⁴ Shout joyfully to the LORD all the earth. Break out into joyful singing, and make music. ⁵ Make melody to the LORD with the harp, With the harp and the sound of melody." ⁶ With trumpets and the sound of a ram's horn shout in the presence of the LORD, the king! ⁷ Let the sea roar, and the fullness of it; the world, and those who live in it. ⁸ Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing for joy together. ⁹ Let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

⁵ "Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things. Let this be known to the entire world. ⁶ "Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you."

²⁰ Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand and went out with all the women behind her with tambourines and dancing. ²¹ Miriam sang to them, "Sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted! The horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea."

¹⁰ Also, when ye be merry in your feast days and in the first days of your months, ye shall blow the trumpets over your burnt sacrifices and peaceofferings, that it may be a remembrance of you before your God. I am the LORD your God."

¹¹ then to the place which the LORD your God shall choose, to cause His name to dwell there, you must bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the wave offering of your hand and all your chosen vows which you vow to the LORD. ¹² And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God; you, your sons, your daughters, your menservants, your female servants, and the Levite that is within your gates (because he has no part nor inheritance with you).

⁵ When the ark of the LORD's covenant came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.

²¹ And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the next day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel: ²² And they ate and drank before the LORD on that day with great joy, and made Solomon the son of David king a second time, and anointed him before the LORD as ruler, and Zadok as priest.

⁵ And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand cattle and one hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God. ⁶ The priests were standing at their posts. So were the Levites who had the LORD's musical instruments that King David made for praising the LORD. They were saying: "his mercy endures forever." This he used to offer praise. The priests were opposite the Levites blowing trumpets while all Israel was standing there. ⁷ Moreover Solomon consecrated the middle of the court that was in front of the house of the LORD: for there he offered burnt offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar which Solomon had made was not able to receive the burnt offerings, and the grain offerings, and the fat.

¹⁰ And on the twenty third day of the seventh month, he sent the people to their tents, rejoicing and glad of heart, for the goodness that the LORD had done to David, and to Solomon, and to His people Israel.

¹³ All the people from Judah, their infants, wives, and children were standing in front of the LORD.

²⁷ Then returned all the men of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, to return to Jerusalem with joy; for the Lord had caused them to rejoice over their enemies.

³⁵ And also the burnt-offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace-offerings, and the drink-offerings for every burnt- offering. So the service of the house of the LORD was firmly established. ³⁶ And Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced, because God had prepared the people: for the thing was done suddenly.

¹³ No person could distinguish the sound of joyful acclaim from the sound of people weeping, for the people shouted with great joyful acclaim and the sound was heard from afar.

²⁹ "If he is remains silent, who will condemn him? If he conceals his face, who can see him? He watches over both nation and individual alike,

⁶ Now my head will be lifted up above my enemies, even those who surround me. I will sacrifice in his tent with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melodies to the LORD.

⁷ The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I received help. My heart exalts, and I give thanks to him with my song.

¹¹ You have turned my wailing into my dancing. You have removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy ¹² so that I may sing praise to you and not remain silent. LORD, my God, I will give you thanks forever!

⁴ Because you made me glad with your awesome deeds, LORD, I will sing for joy at the works of your hands.

¹¹ Ye kings of the earth, and all nations; ye princes, and all judges of the earth; ¹² young men and maidens, old men and children, ¹³ Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above the earth and the heavens.

³ to give for those in mourning in Zion, to give them a head wrap instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit. And they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to show his glory.

¹⁰ "Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her: rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn over her; ¹¹ "You will nurse and be satisfied from her comforting breasts. You will nurse and be satisfied at her full breasts." ¹² This is what the LORD says: "I will offer you peace like a river and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream. You will nurse and be carried in Jerusalem's arms and cuddled on her knees. ¹³ "As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you. You will be comforted in Jerusalem." ¹⁴ When you see it, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like new grass. The power of the LORD will be made known to his servants, but he will condemn his enemies.

¹³ The virgins will rejoice with dancing together with young men and old men. For I'll turn their mourning into joy, and I'll comfort them and give them gladness instead of sorrow.

¹¹ "Yes, you will hear the sounds of joy and happiness and the sounds of brides and grooms. You will hear those who bring thank offerings to the LORD's Temple."' "'They will say: Give thanks to the LORD Almighty because the LORD is good, because his mercy endures forever. I will restore the prosperity of the land to what they were before,"' says the LORD.

⁹ The crowds that went before him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"

¹⁵ But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant;

²² So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

¹⁹ Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord,

¹³ Is anyone of you in trouble? let him pray. Is anyone thriving? let him sing praise.

¹⁰ "Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests. Anyone else who tries to do the priests' duties must be put to death."

²⁴ This is the rule for the Levites: those of twenty-five years old and over are to go in and do the work of the Tent of meeting; ²⁵ but after fifty years of age, they are to be withdrawn from the service, and work no more.

²⁶ But the four principal gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.

²⁸ The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the Temple of the LORD: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the House of God.

²¹ The descendants of Ladan, who were Gershonites through Ladan and who were heads of families belonging to Ladan the Gershonite, were Jehieli, ²² the sons of Jehieli, Zetham and his brother Joel. They were in charge of the treasuries of the temple of the LORD. ²³ From the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites and the Uzzielites: ²⁴ Shubael, a descendant of Gershom son of Moses, was the officer in charge of the treasuries. ²⁵ His relatives through Eliezer: Rehabiah his son, Jeshaiah his son, Joram his son, Zicri his son and Shelomith his son. ²⁶ Shelomith and his relatives were in charge of all the treasuries for the things dedicated by King David, by the heads of families who were the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and by the other army commanders.

¹¹ The priests came out of the holy place, (for all the priests who were present had sanctified themselves, and didn't keep their divisions; ¹² All the Levite musicians, including Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and their sons and relatives wore linen and played cymbals and stringed instruments as they stood east of the altar. Accompanied by 120 priests who played trumpets,

¹¹ and they burn to the LORD every morning and every evening burnt offerings and sweet incense. They also set the showbread in order on the pure table; and the lampstand of gold with its lamps, to burn every evening. We keep the instruction of the LORD our God; but you have forsaken Him. ¹² "God is with us as our leader. His priests will sound their trumpets to call the army to fight you. Men of Israel do not wage war against the LORD the God of your ancestors. You will not succeed."

¹¹ Hezekiah gave an order to prepare storerooms in the LORD's temple, and so they did. ¹² They faithfully brought in the gifts, tithes, and consecrated materials, and Connie the Levite was placed in charge of them. His brother Shimei was second in command, ¹³ And Jehiel, Azaziah, Nathan, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah were chief officers under the hand of Conaniah and Shimei, his brother, by appointment of King Hezekiah. And Azaraiah was leader of the house of God.

³⁷ We also determined to present the first fruits of our ground grain, our offerings, the fruit of all kinds of trees, wines, and oil to the priests, to the chambers of the temple of our God, and the tithes of our land to the Levites, so those Levites could collect the tithes in all the towns where we worked. ³⁸ And the priest, the son of Aaron, is to be with the Levites, when the Levites take the tenths: and the Levites are to take a tenth of the tenths into the house of our God, to the rooms, into the store-house; ³⁹ For the sons of Israel and the sons of Levi shall bring the offering of the grain, of the new wine, and the oil, to the rooms where the vessels of the sanctuary are, and the priests who minister, and the gatekeepers and the singers. And we will not forsake the house of our God.

⁴ Before this, Eliashib the priest had been placed over the rooms of the house of our God. He was a friend of Tobiah. ⁵ prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had formerly put the grain offering, the frankincense, the temple objects, tithes of grain, wine, and oil commanded for the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the offerings of the priests.

¹² So all of Judah brought the tithe of grain, new wine, and olive oil into the storehouses. ¹³ to the charge of Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites. And next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Matthaniah; for they were accounted faithful. It was their office to distribute to their brothers.

³⁴ Blessed is the person who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorways

³¹ "Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary! They will walk and not be faint."

⁷ if it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;

⁶ Nobody is to enter the LORD's temple except for the priests and Levites who are on duty. They may enter because they are ceremonially holy, but all the rest of the people must observe the LORD's instructions.

¹ David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service some of the sons of Asaph and of Heman and of Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps and cymbals; and the number of those who performed their service was: ² of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah. The sons of Asaph were under the hand of Asaph, who prophesied at the order of the king. ³ Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising the LORD. ⁴ Of Heman: the sons of Heman; Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamtiezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth: ⁵ All these were sons of Heman, the king's seer in the words of God. And to make great his power God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. ⁶ All these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, harps and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman under the direction of the king. ⁷ They and their relatives who had been skillfully trained in singing to the LORD, numbered 288. ⁸ And they cast lots, for duty, the small as well as the great, the teacher as the pupil. ⁹ Now the first lot came out for Asaph to Joseph, the second for Gedaliah, he with his relatives and sons were twelve. ¹⁰ the third to Zaccur, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹¹ the fourth to Izri, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹² the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹³ the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁴ the seventh to Jesharelah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁵ the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁶ the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁷ the tenth to Shimei, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁸ the eleventh to Azarel, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ¹⁹ the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁰ the thirteenth to Shubael, his sons and his brothers, twelve; ²¹ the fourteenth, to Mattithiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; ²² the fifteenth Jerimoth. his sons and brethren, twelve; ²³ for the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁴ for the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁵ for the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁶ for the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁷ for the twentieth to Eliathah, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ²⁸ The twenty first to Hothir, his sons and his brothers. ²⁹ for the twenty-second to Giddalti, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ³⁰ for the twenty-third to Mahazioth, his sons and his relatives, twelve; ³¹ for the twenty-fourth to Romamti-ezer, his sons and his relatives, twelve.

¹ A Psalm by Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

¹ God, do not keep silent. Do not keep silent, and do not be still, God.

²¹ "I have given the Levites one-tenth of every Israelite’s income. This is in return for the work they do at the tent of meeting. ²² »The other Israelites must never again come near the tent of meeting. Otherwise, they will suffer the consequences of their sin and die. ²³ »Only the Levites will do the work at the tent of meeting. They are responsible for their own sins. This is a long lasting law for future generations. They will own no property, as the other Israelites will. ²⁴ "Instead, I will give the Levites what the Israelites contribute to the LORD, one-tenth of the Israelites’ income. This is why I said about them: They will own no property as the other Israelites do." ²⁵ the LORD said to Moses: ²⁶ "You will speak to the Levites and say to them, 'When you receive the tithe from the Israelites that I have given to you from them for your inheritance, you will present a contribution from it to the LORD, a tithe from a tithe. ²⁷ "'Your contribution will be considered to be grain from the threshing floor or juice from the winepress. ²⁸ Thus you also will offer a heave offering to the LORD of all your tithes, which you receive of the sons of Israel. And from it you will give the LORD's heave offering to Aaron the priest. ²⁹ "‘Out of all the gifts you receive, you must contribute the best and holiest parts to the LORD.’

⁵ As the word spread around, the people of Israel gave generously for the first fruits of grain, wine, oil, honey, and all of the produce of the fields. They generously gave a tithe of everything. ⁶ The children of Israel and Judah, who lived in the cities of Judah, also brought in the tithe of cattle and sheep, and the tithe of dedicated things which were consecrated to the LORD their God, and laid them in heaps.

³⁵ We also bring the first fruits of our soil and the first fruits of all the fruit trees, year by year, for the house of Yahweh. ³⁶ also to bring the first-born of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the Law; and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God.

²³ for it was the king's command to them.

¹² In the days of Joiakim there were priests, heads of families: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah;

¹⁰ I also learned that the allotments for the Levites had not been distributed. As a result, the Levites and singers who were responsible for the service had each left to go back to their fields. ¹¹ So I confronted the officials and asked, "Why is the temple of God neglected?" Then I gathered them together and put them back in their places. ¹² So all of Judah brought the tithe of grain, new wine, and olive oil into the storehouses.

⁸ Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In tithes and offerings. ⁹ You are cursed under the curse the entire nation because you are robbing me!" ¹⁰ Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and test me now in this,” says the LORD of Armies, “if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there will not be room enough for.

⁶ However, the one who receives instruction in the word must share in all good things with his instructor.
