¹ Now these are the nations that the LORD left to test the Israelites who had not known all the wars of Canaan. ² He did this to teach warfare to the generations of the children of Israel who had not had previous battle experience. ³ the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon up to Lebo-Hamath. ⁴ They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to the LORD's commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses. ⁵ The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, ⁶ They took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods. ⁷ The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God, and they served the Baals and the Asheroth. ⁸ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Aram Naharaim; and the Israelites served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. ⁹ And when the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the sons of Israel, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. ¹⁰ And the spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and he prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. ¹¹ And the land had rest forty years,—and Othniel son of Kenaz, died. ¹² The people of Israel sinned against the LORD again. Because of this the LORD made King Eglon of Moab stronger than Israel. ¹³ He gathered to himself the Ammonites and Amalekites, and he went and defeated Israel, and they took possession of the city of palms. ¹⁴ The Israelites served Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years. ¹⁵ And the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite and a left-handed man. And the Israelites sent a tribute to Eglon king of Moab through him. ¹⁶ Ehud made himself a double-edged sword about a foot and a half long. He fastened it on his right side under his clothes. ¹⁷ He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. ¹⁸ As he finished presenting the tribute, Ehud sent away the people who had been carrying it. ¹⁹ but he himself turned back from the idols that were by Gilgal and said, I have a secret errand to you, king. The king said, Keep silence! All his attendants left him. ²⁰ Ehud approached him while he was sitting by himself in the cool roof chamber of his palace. He said, "I have a message from God for you!" So when Eglon got up from his seat, ²¹ With his left hand Ehud took the sword from his right side and plunged it into the king's belly. ²² And the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didnʼt draw the sword out of his belly; and it came out behind. ²³ Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them. ²⁴ After he had gone, his servants came and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.” ²⁵ And they waited so long they became embarrassed because he did not open the doors of the upper room. So they took the key and opened the doors, and there their lord was lying on the ground dead. ²⁶ Ehud escaped while they waited and passed beyond the idols and escaped to Seirah. ²⁷ When he had arrived, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hill country, and he went before them. ²⁸ And he said to them, "Follow after me! the LORD has given Moab your enemies into your hand." So they went down after him, and they captured the fords of the Jordan toward Moab; and they did not allow anyone to cross over. ²⁹ And at that time they smite about ten thousand men of Moab - all fat - all men of valour; and not a man escapes. ³⁰ So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel: and the land had rest eighty years. ³¹ After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad. He also saved Israel.

²² And the LORD your God will clear away these nations from before you little by little; you will not be able to finish them off quickly, lest the wild animals multiply against you.

² "Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way these 40 years in the desert, to humble and test you in order to make known what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

¹⁶ and fed you in the desert with manna that neither you nor your ancestors had known, to humble and test you so that things go well with you later.

¹⁰ After all that generation were gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who didn't know the LORD, nor the work which he had done for Israel.

²¹ I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died; ²² "That through them I may test Israel, to see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their fathers did."

³¹ When the leaders of Babylon sent ambassadors to ask him about the miraculous sign that had happened in the land, God left him. God did this to test him, to find out everything that was in Hezekiah's heart.

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take: when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

³ The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold: and the LORD tries hearts.

²⁷ "I have made you a tester of metals and a fortress among my people; that you may know and try their way."

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and incurable; who can know it? ¹⁰ "I, the LORD, search the heart and examine the mind (inner man). I give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds.

⁹ And I will bring the remaining third into the fire, and I will refine them like one refines silver, and I will test them like one tests gold. They will call my name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'the LORD is my God.'"

²⁴ But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew all men.

⁷ so that your tested faith, much more precious than gold that perishes though tested by fire, may be found to your praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed,

¹² Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you.

²³ Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

¹⁷ "But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. When you eat of it you will surely die."

⁵ "God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened. Then you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

⁷ Then the eyes of both of them were opened. They realized they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

⁸ "However, they will become his servants. They must learn the difference between serving me and serving foreign kings."

³⁴ "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword. ³⁵ For I have come to turn ‘A man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. ³⁶ A man's enemies will be the members of his own household.' ³⁷ Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; ³⁸ and anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. ³⁹ Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

³³ I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”

²⁶ Therefore I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight like I am beating the air. ²⁷ No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

¹¹ Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. ¹² For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ¹³ Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to withstand it; and after you have done everything, to stand firm. ¹⁴ Stand firm then, with the belt of truth fastened around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, ¹⁵ and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. ¹⁶ In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. ¹⁷ Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. ¹⁸ Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.

¹² Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

³ Endure hardship with me as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

⁷ I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

¹⁵ Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, ¹⁶ Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, ¹⁷ Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, ¹⁸ Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. Later the Canaanite clans scattered, ¹⁹ and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

¹³ Zebulun shall live at the sea shore. And he shall be a haven for ships, and his border beside Sidon.

²⁹ Amalek lives in the land of the Negev while the Hittite, Jebusite, and Amorite live in the hill-country. The Canaanite lives by the sea and on the bank of the Jordan.

⁸ and from there to Hamath Pass. It will continue to Zedad

⁷ Break camp, get going, and proceed to the hill country of the Amorites and all the nearby places in the Arabah desert, the highlands, the foothills, the Negev, the coastal plains, all of the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon as far as the great river, the Euphrates.

⁹ (Sidonians call Hermon, Sirion; and the Amorites call it Senir,)

³ to the Canaanites in the east and west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

⁸ and Yah Veh gives them into the hand of Yisra El who smites them and pursues them to great Sidon and to Misrephoth Mayim and to the valley of Mispeh from the rising; they smite them until no survivors survive: ⁹ Joshua did to them as the LORD told him. He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire. ¹⁰ Joshua then turned back, and captured Hazor. He killed the king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all these kingdoms. ¹¹ And they struck every person in it by the mouth of the sword. He destroyed them, he did not leave anyone breathing; and he burned Hazor with fire. ¹² Joshua took all the cities and all the kings and struck them with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them. Just as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded. ¹³ Israel did not burn the cities standing on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned.

³ from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites, Ashdodites, Ashkelonites, Gittites, Ekronites, and the Avvim.

⁵ and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal Gad under Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath;

²⁸ Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah as far as Great Sidon.

² So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, and he was living in Harosheth Haggoyim.

²³ On that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan before the Israelites. ²⁴ The hand of the Israelites prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan until they had destroyed him.

⁷ In his burning anger against Israel, he sold them into domination by the Philistines and the Ammonites,

¹² the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppress you? And ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hands.

⁴ His father and mother did not know that this was from the LORD; he was seeking for an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines were ruling in Israel.

⁷ Then the five men departed and came to Laish. They saw that the people there lived in security like the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, and they were prosperous, lacking nothing. Also they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone else.

¹ Samuels words came to all Israel. Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They camped near Ebenezer while the Philistines camped at Aphek. ² The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the battlefield.

¹⁸ The number of golden mice was according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, fortified cities and country villages. The great stone on which they put the ark of the LORD remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.

⁵ The Philistines assembled to fight Israel. They had thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and as many soldiers as the sand on the seashore. They camped at Michmash, east of Beth Aven.

¹⁹ No blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel because the Philistines thought, "This will keep the Hebrews from making swords or spears." ²⁰ All the Israelites went down to the Philistines to have their ploughshares, mattocks, axes and sickles sharpened. ²¹ The charge was two-thirds of a shekel for the plowshare and for the mattock, and a third of a shekel for the pick and for the axe, and to set the goading sticks. ²² So on the day of battle, there was not a sword or a spear found in the hands of all the army that was with Saul and Jonathan, but Saul and his son Jonathan had them. ²³ Now a garrison of the Philistines had gone out to the pass of Michmash.

² And the Philistine rulers were passing on by hundreds and by thousands. And David and his men were passing on in the rear with Achish.

²⁵ And he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There he made a rule and regulation for them, and there he tested them.

⁸ About Levi he said:May your Thummim and your Urim be for your benign man whom you probed at Massah; you contended with him at the waters of Meribah,

²² "That through them I may test Israel, to see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their fathers did."

¹ Now these are the nations that the LORD left to test the Israelites who had not known all the wars of Canaan.

¹⁹ And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved.

⁹ The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the power of Satan. He will use every kind of power, including miraculous signs, lying wonders, ¹⁰ and with all the deception of wickedness for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. ¹¹ For this reason, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie, ¹² and so that all may be condemned who have not believed the truth but have taken pleasure in wickedness.

¹⁵ Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, ¹⁶ Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, ¹⁷ Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, ¹⁸ Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. Later the Canaanite clans scattered,

¹⁹ the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, ²⁰ the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, ²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites."

⁸ I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

¹⁷ And I have said it, that I will bring you out of the tribulation of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites: even a land that floweth with milk and honey.'

¹ "When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, he will drive out many nations before you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations who are more numerous and stronger than you.

¹ Now when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the Shephelah, and on all the coast of the great sea toward Lebanon—the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites—heard of this,

²⁹ Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. ³⁰ Zebulun didn't drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or Nahalol, but the Canaanites lived among them and became subject to forced labour. ³¹ Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob, ³² And the Asherite dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they drove not out

⁸ and foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give unto his seed the land of the Cananites, Hittites, Amorites, Perezites, Jebusites, and Girgashites - and hast made good thy words: for thou art righteous,

³⁴ They did not destroy the peoples, as the LORD commanded them, ³⁵ but they mingled with the nations and learned their works, ³⁶ They served their idols, which became a snare to them. ³⁷ They sacrificed their sons And their daughters to demons; ³⁸ and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was defiled with blood,

¹⁶ and you take from their daughters for your sons. and their daughters fornicate with their gods, and they lead your sons to fornicate with their gods.

³ "Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. ⁴ For that would turn away your sons from following me, that they may serve other gods. So the LORD's anger would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.

¹ King Solomon loved many foreign women: the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, Hittite; ² from the nations which the LORD had said to the Israelites, "You shall not marry them, and they shall not marry you. They will certainly turn your heart after other gods." But Solomon clung to them to love. ³ He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. ⁴ When Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father was. ⁵ And Solomon followed Ashtaroth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

¹¹ which thou gavest us by the ministry of thy servants, the prophets, saying, The land which you are going to possess, is a land subject to change by the removal of the people of the nations for their abominations, with the filth of which they have filled it from one end to the other; ¹² And now do not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth forever, so that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your sons forever.

²³ Also in those days I saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. ²⁴ and their children spoke half in the language of Ashdod, and did not know how to speak in the Jewish language. ²⁵ So I quarreled with them and cursed them and beat some of their men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath by God: "Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. ²⁶ "Was it not in these things that Solomon, king of Israel, did wrong? Among a number of nations there was no king like him. He was dear to his God, and God made him king over all Israel. But even he was made to do evil by strange women. ²⁷ And should we hearken to you to do all this great evil, to act unfaithfully to our God by marrying foreign wives?

³ "Say this, 'The Sovereign LORD says this to Jerusalem: "Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites. Your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

¹³ "Instead tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and cut down their Asherim.

⁹ Only guard yourselves carefully so you won't forget the things that you saw and let them slip from your mind for the rest of your life. Tell them to your children and to your grandchildren.

²¹ Thou shalt plant no grove, nor any tree near the altar of the Lord thy God:

¹¹ The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and they served the Baals. ¹² They forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them. They bowed to them and provoked the LORD to anger. ¹³ And they forsook the LORD and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

¹² The people of Israel sinned against the LORD again. Because of this the LORD made King Eglon of Moab stronger than Israel.

²⁵ That same night, the LORD said to him, “Take your father's bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it.

³³ And Ahab made an Asherah. And Ahab did more to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

¹⁹ Now therefore send and gather to me all Israel unto Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the groves, who eat at Jezebel’s table.

⁶ He brought the Asherah from the LORD's temple to the Kidron Brook outside Jerusalem, burned it at the Kidron brook, pulverized the ashes to dust, and scattered it over the graves of the common people.

¹⁴ He also broke into pieces the stone pillars and cut down the Asherah poles and covered their sites with human bones.

¹⁶ King Asa also removed his grandmother Maacah from the position of queen mother. She made a statue of the repulsive goddess Asherah. Asa immediately cut the statue down, crushed it, and burned it in the Kidron Valley.

¹⁸ They abandoned the LORD's temple and the God of their fathers, and they served Asherim and idols. As a result this guilt of theirs resulted in wrath coming upon Judah and Jerusalem.

³ For again he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had broken down, and raised up altars for the Baals, and made Asherahs and bowed himself to all the host of the heavens, and served them.

¹⁹ And his prayer, and how he responded to him, all his sin and his unfaithful acts, and the places where he built the high places and set up Asherahs and idols before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the words of the seers.

³ In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a boy, he began to seek the God of David his ancestor. And in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherahs, the idols, and the images.

⁷ Then he tore down the altars, beat the Asherah poles and idols into powder, and cut down all the incense altars everywhere in Israel. Then he went back to Jerusalem.

²⁴ and My wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

²⁰ the LORD will never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and / His jealousy will burn against that man. Every curse which is written in this book will rest on him. the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had delivered them up?

¹⁴ Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

²⁰ And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and said, Because this nation has forsaken My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice,

⁹ And she said, I will surely go with you. But the journey that you take shall not be for your honor, for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

⁹ But they forgot the LORD their God, so he sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the hosts of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.

¹ For the music director; with stringed instruments, on the Sheminith. A psalm of David. O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger, and do not discipline me in your wrath.

³ You withdrew all your wrath; you turned from your burning anger.

¹ Thus said the LORD, Where this writing of cutting off of your mother which I sent her away? or which of my creditors whom I sold you to him? Behold, in your iniquities ye sold yourselves, and in your transgressions your mother was sent away.

⁷ I saw the tents of Cushan in distress, and the tent curtains of the land of Midian in anguish.

¹⁴ We know that the Law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

¹³ And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah for his wife.

¹⁶ And the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

¹⁵ And the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite and a left-handed man. And the Israelites sent a tribute to Eglon king of Moab through him.

³ Jabin had nine hundred iron chariots, and he ruled the people of Israel with cruelty and violence for twenty years. The people of Israel cried out to the LORD for help.

⁷ When the Israelites cried to the LORD because of Midian

¹⁰ Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against you; we have abandoned our God and served the Baals."

¹⁰ So they cried out to the LORD and said, 'We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD and have served the Baals and the Ashtoreths. But now deliver us from the hand of our enemies and we will serve you!'

²⁷ So you delivered them into the control of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed, they cried out to you, and you heard from heaven. In your great compassion you gave them deliverers who rescued them from the control of their enemies.

⁵ They cried to you, and were delivered. They trusted in you, and were not disappointed.

³⁴ When he slew them, they sought him, and turned them early, and inquired after God.

⁴¹ He handed them over to other nations, and those who hated them ruled them. ⁴² Their enemies oppressed them and made them subject to their power. ⁴³ Many times He delivered them, but they rebelled in their counsel and sank in their iniquities. ⁴⁴ Yet he looked upon their distress when he heard their cry.

¹³ Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. ¹⁴ He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke away their chains. ¹⁵ Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds to mankind. ¹⁶ For he has broken the gates of bronze, and cut through bars of iron. ¹⁷ Because of their rebellious ways, fools suffered for their iniquities. ¹⁸ They loathed all food, and even reached the gates of death. ¹⁹ Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

¹⁷ I will come down and speak with you there; I will take away from the spirit that is on you, and I will place it on them; and they will bear the burdens of the people with you; you will not bear it alone.

²⁵ the LORD came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.

²⁹ Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them."

² And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and sees Israel encamped by their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him.

¹⁸ Then the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and place your hand on him.

³⁴ But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was called after him.

²⁹ And the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh. He passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed through to the Ammonites.

²⁵ And the Spirit of the LORD began to direct him in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

⁶ Suddenly the power of the LORD made Samson strong. He tore the lion apart with his bare hands, as if it were a young goat. But he did not tell his parents what he had done.

¹⁹ The Spirit of the LORD came mightily on him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck thirty men of them and took their belongings and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. His anger was burning, and he went up to his father's house.

⁶ The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you, and you'll prophesy with them and be changed into a different person.

⁶ When Saul heard these words, the Spirit of God came on him, and he was very angry.

¹³ Then Samuel took the bottle of oil, and put the oil on him there among his brothers: and from that day the spirit of the Lord came on David with power. So Samuel went back to Ramah.

¹ The Spirit of God came on Azariah the son of Oded:

¹⁴ Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel, the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite from the descendants of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly.

¹¹ Do not cast me from your presence; do not take your Holy Spirit from me.

⁴ There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. ⁵ There are different ministries, but the same Lord. ⁶ There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all men. ⁷ Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. ⁸ To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by the same Spirit, ⁹ to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, ¹⁰ to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. ¹¹ All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines.

⁴ It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,

²³ Joshua took all the land according to all that the LORD had spoken to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel, according to their tribal divisions, and the land rested from war.

¹⁷ And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's brother, took it: so he gave him his daughter Achsah for his wife.

⁹ And when the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the sons of Israel, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them.

³⁰ So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel: and the land had rest eighty years.

³¹ “So let all your enemies perish, the LORD, but let those who love him be as the sun when it rises in its strength.” Then the land had rest forty years.

²⁸ And Midian was subdued before the Israelites, and they did not again lift up their head, and the land rested for forty years in the days of Gideon.

¹³ The sons of Kenaz: Othniel, and Seraiah. The sons of Othniel: Hathath and Meonothai.

²² as the days in which the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day; that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions to one another, and gifts to the poor.

¹⁶ but indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth;

¹¹ The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and they served the Baals.

¹⁹ When the judge was dead they returned and corrupted themselves more than their fathers. They followed other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them. They did not give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.

¹ Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and honorable, because by him the LORD had given victory to Syria. He was also a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.

¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself against him who hews with it? Shall the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield those who lift it up, [or] as if a staff should lift up [him who is] not wood.

²⁶ "Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it! And now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone.

¹ Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut: ² "I myself will go before you, and I will level the mountains. I will break the doors of bronze and cut throughthe bars of iron. ³ And I will give you the treasures of darkness, even treasures in secret places, that you may know that I am the LORD, who calls you by your name, the God of Israel. ⁴ "For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen one, I have called you by name. I have given you a title of honor, although you do not know me.

¹⁶ and you will advance against my people Israel like a cloud covering the land; it will be in the last days, and I will bring you against my land, so that the nations know me, when I show myself holy through you before their eyes, O Gog!" '

²² it's you, your majesty! You've become great and strong, your greatness has grown to the heavens, and your dominion reaches to the distant parts of the earth.

¹⁸ O king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor.

⁴ "What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.

¹¹ Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed Me over to you is guilty of greater sin.”

³ and the Negev and the plain in the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.

¹⁶ And the sons of the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, went up from the city of palm-trees with the sons of Judah to the desert of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and he went up and dwelt with the people:

¹⁴ Some came from Ephraim who had been harassed by Amalek, followed by Benjamin with your people. Some commanders came from Machir, along with some from Zebulun who carry a badge of office.

⁶ the tents of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarites; ⁷ Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the dwellers of Tyre;"

²³ And if over these things you should not be corrected, but should go to me sideways, ²⁴ I also will walk contrary to you, and will strike you seven times for your sins. ²⁵ I will bring the sword on you avenging the vengeance of the covenant. When you will be gathered into your cities then I will send the plague into your midst, and you will be given into the hand of the enemy.

⁴⁰ You will have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you won't anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off.

⁴⁷ "Because you didn't serve the LORD your God joyfully and wholeheartedly, despite the abundance of everything you have, ⁴⁸ therefore you will serve your enemies whom Yahweh sends against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in lack of all things. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you.

¹⁶ Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed. Every one of them could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

²⁷ But the sons of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him and brought him no present. But he was silent.

² They were armed with bows, and were able to send stones, and arrows from the bow, with right hand or left: they were Saul's brothers, of Benjamin.

¹⁵ Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

¹⁵ Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.

¹⁶ A man's gift widens the way for him, And guides him before the great."

⁶ Many will seek the favor of a ruler, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.

¹⁴ A gift in secret pacifies anger, and a bribe in the cloak, strong wrath.

¹⁶ "'Do not listen to Hezekiah, because this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me! Come out, and give yourselves up to me! Everyone will eat from his own grapevine and fig tree and drink from his own cistern.

¹² And you will call upon me and you will go and pray to me and I will listen to you. ¹³ You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.

³ Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and inscrutable things which you do not know.

²¹ With his left hand Ehud took the sword from his right side and plunged it into the king's belly.

³ Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendor and your majesty.

⁶ May the high praises of God be in their mouths, and a two-edged sword in their hand,

⁸ All of them are wearing swords and are experienced in battle. Each has his sword on his thigh, ready for the terror of the night.

¹² For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

¹⁶ In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword. His face was like the sun when it shines with full force.

¹² To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of the One who has the sharp, double-edged sword.

²⁹ And at that time they smite about ten thousand men of Moab - all fat - all men of valour; and not a man escapes.

²⁹ Why do you despise my sacrifice and my offering which I commanded for my dwelling place, while you honored your sons more than me by making yourselves fat from the best of all the offerings of my people Israel?

²⁷ »His face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh.

⁷ Their eyes bulge with fat, their minds pass the limits of conceit.

¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.

²⁸ and have grown fat and sleek. There is no limit to their evil deeds. They don't argue the case of the orphan to secure justice. They don't defend the rights of the poor.

¹¹ Because you rejoice, because you exult, O destroyers of My inheritance, because you are fat like the heifer in grass, and neigh like strong ones,

²⁰ Therefore thus says the Sovereign LORD to them: Behold, I, even I, will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.

¹ Upon this Joseph could not restrain himself before all his attendants, but said, Dismiss all from me. So there was no attendant with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers,

²⁰ and Joshua set up at Galgala, the twelve stones which he had taken out of the Jordan,

²⁰ Ehud approached him while he was sitting by himself in the cool roof chamber of his palace. He said, "I have a message from God for you!" So when Eglon got up from his seat,

⁵ When he arrived, the army commanders were seated, so he said, "I have a message for you, captain!" Jehu asked, "For which one of us?" "For you, captain!" he answered. ⁶ The two of them went indoors. The prophet poured the olive oil on Jehu's head and said to him: "the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anoint you king of my people Israel.

¹⁸ So he took him and brought him to the commander and said, “Paul the prisoner called me over and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you”. ¹⁹ The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside, and asked, “What do you need to tell me?”

¹⁹ but he himself turned back from the idols that were by Gilgal and said, I have a secret errand to you, king. The king said, Keep silence! All his attendants left him.

¹ the LORD sent Nathan to David. Nathan came to him and said: "There were two men in a certain city. One was rich and the other was poor. ² "The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle. ³ but the poor man had nothing except for one little ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It used to share his food and drink from his own cup. It even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. ⁴ And a traveler came to the rich one, and he spared to take of his own flock, and of his own herd, to prepare for the traveler who had come to him. And he took the ewe lamb of the poor man, and prepared it for the man who had come to him. ⁵ David flew into a rage at the man and told Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! ⁶ He shall restore the ewe fourfold, because he did this thing, and had no pity. ⁷ Nathan said to David, "You are the man. This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. ⁸ I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things. ⁹ "'Why did you despise what the LORD has promised by doing what is detestable in his sight? "'You struck down Uriah the Hittite with a battle sword. "'You took his wife to be your own. "'You killed him with the sword of the Ammonite army. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' ¹¹ "This is what the LORD says: 'Look, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. ¹² "'You did this secretly. I will make this happen in broad daylight in front of all Israel.'" ¹³ David said to Nathan: "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied: "the LORD has taken away your sin. You will not die. ¹⁴ But because you have utterly scorned the LORD in this matter, the son born for you will certainly die." ¹⁵ Nathan went home. the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had given birth to David. The child became sick.

¹² "Go tell David: 'This is what the LORD says: "I offer you three choices. Choose the one you want me to do to you."'"

¹ A psalm of David. Ascribe to the LORD, O sons of God, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

⁷ Who would not revere you, O king of the nations? For you it is fitting. For among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like you.

¹⁵ And I will smite the winter house along with the summer house,—and the houses of ivory, shall be destroyed! and the great houses, shall disappear, Declareth the LORD.

⁹ The LORD's voice calls to the city, and wisdom sees your name: "Listen to the rod, and he who appointed it.

⁷ Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of the priest Aaron, saw this. He left the assembly and grabbed a spear in his hand. ⁸ and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. So the plague of the sons of Israel was stayed.

³³ And Samuel said, As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women. And Samuel cut Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

²⁵ "He pulls it out of his back, the gleaming point out of his liver. Terrors will come over him.

³ It will happen that, when anyone still prophesies, then his father and his mother who bore him will tell him, ‘You must die, because you speak lies in the LORD’s name;’ and his father and his mother who bore him will stab him when he prophesies.

¹⁶ So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh. Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.

³ He came to the sheep pens beside the road, and a cave was there. Then Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost part of the cave.

¹⁵ And Joshua answered them, If you are a great people, and if mount Ephraim is too narrow for you, get up to the forest and cut down more for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants.

¹⁸ "The mountain will be yours. For it is a wood, and you will cut it down. The farthest limits will be yours. You will drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they are strong."

²⁴ Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim saying, Come down against Midian and seize the waters of the Jordan ahead of them as far as Beth Barah. So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together and took the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah.

¹ There was a man named Micah, who lived in the mountains of Ephraim.

¹ In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.

³ Jonathan attacked the Philistine garrison in Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout the land: "Listen, Hebrews!"

²² Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

¹³ So they hastened each one to take his cloak, and they spread them under him on the bare steps, blew on the trumpet, and said, "Jehu is king!"

⁷ Now they that were sent, pursued after them, by the way that leadeth to the fords of the Jordan: and as soon as they were gone out, the gate was presently shut.

¹⁰ Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh. Ten thousand men followed him; and Deborah went up with him.

⁹ And that night the LORD said to him, "Get up; go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand.

¹⁵ When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation he worshiped God. He returned to the camp of Israel, and called out: »Arise! the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.«

¹⁷ And he said to them, "Watch me and do the same. When I come to the edge of the camp, do just as I do.

⁵ Then Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan from Ephraim, and whenever a fugitive of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" When he said, "No,"

⁴⁷ and all this assembly do know that not by sword and by spear does the LORD save, that the battle [is] the LORD's, and He has given you into our hand..

¹⁵ But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked; you grew fat, thick and sated. And he abandoned God who made him, and fell away from the Rock of his salvation.

¹⁷ He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁰ They close up their callous hearts. With their mouth they speak proudly.

¹¹ And the land had rest forty years,—and Othniel son of Kenaz, died.

¹ And again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and Ehud died.

³ Jabin had nine hundred iron chariots, and he ruled the people of Israel with cruelty and violence for twenty years. The people of Israel cried out to the LORD for help. ⁴ Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, judged Israel at that time. ⁵ She lived under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites came up to her for judgment. ⁶ She sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh Naphtali and said to him, Hasn't the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded 'Go to Mount Tabor and take with you ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and Zebulun? ⁷ I will draw out Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, with his chariots and troops, to the wadi of Kishon, and I will give him into your hand.'" ⁸ Barak said to her, "If you go with me, I will go; but if you do not go with me, I will not go." ⁹ And she said, I will surely go with you. But the journey that you take shall not be for your honor, for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh. ¹⁰ Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh. Ten thousand men followed him; and Deborah went up with him. ¹¹ Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab, Moses' brother-in-law, and had pitched his tent as far as the oak in Zaanannim, which is by Kedesh. ¹² And they told Sisera that Barak, son of Abinoam, had gone up to Mount Tabor. ¹³ Sisera gathered together all his nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the nations to the Kishon River. ¹⁴ Then Deborah said to Barak, Up! for today the Lord has given Sisera into your hands: has not the Lord gone out before you? So Barak went down from Mount Tabor and ten thousand men after him. ¹⁵ the LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the sword before Barak, and Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot. ¹⁶ But Barak pursued after the chariots and army as far as Harosheth Haggoyim, and all of Sisera's army fell to the edge of the sword; no one was left. ¹⁷ Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. ¹⁸ And Jael went out to Sisera, and said to him, Come in, my lord, come in to me without fear. So he went into her tent, and she put a cover over him. ¹⁹ He said to her, Please give me a little water to drink for I am thirsty. She opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him. ²⁰ He told her, "Stand in the doorway of the tent, and if anyone comes and asks 'Is anybody here?' say 'No'." ²¹ Then Jael Heber's wife picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went to him while he was fast asleep and drove the peg into his temple and it went down into the ground. He was fast asleep and weary. So he died. ²² behold Barak came in pursuit of Sisara. And Jael went out to meet him, and said to him, Come, and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest. So he went in with her, and behold Sisara lay dead with the pin in his temples.

⁶ "In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were deserted. Travelers used the back roads.

⁸ When they chose new gods, the war was at the gates. Was there a shield or spear to be seen among forty thousand in Israel?

¹⁷ And the Ammonites were summoned, and they camped in Gilead. And the Israelites gathered and camped at Mizpah.

⁴ After a time the Ammonites made war with Israel. ⁵ the elders of Galaad went to bring Jephthae from the land of Tob, ⁶ They told him, "Come and be our commander so we can fight the Ammonites!" ⁷ Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress? ⁸ The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, Therefore we have turned again to you now, so that you may go with us and fight the Ammonites, and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. ⁹ Jephthah said: »If you take me back home to fight the Ammonites and the LORD gives me victory, will I be your ruler?« ¹⁰ The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, the LORD shall be witness between us; certainly we will do as you say. ¹¹ So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD at Mizpah. ¹² Jephthah sent messengers to the king of Ammon. He said: "What do you have against us that you want to fight us? Why have you invaded our country?" ¹³ The king of Ammon answered Jephthah's messengers: "Because Israel took away our land when they came out of Egypt. They took land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River and the Jordan River. Now you must give it back peacefully." ¹⁴ Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of Ammon. ¹⁵ and said to him, This is what Jephthah says: Israel didn't take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the Ammonites, ¹⁶ But when they came up out of Egypt, he walked through the desert to the Red Sea, and came into Cades. ¹⁷ then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh. ¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab. ¹⁹ And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorite, king of Hesbron, and Israel said to him, Let us pass through your land to our place. ²⁰ But Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his territory, so he assembled his entire army, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. ²¹ And the LORD, the God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, who lived in that country. ²² And all the coasts thereof from the Arnon to the Jaboc, and from the wilderness to the Jordan. ²³ So now the LORD, the God of Israel has driven out the Amorites from before His people Israel, and should you take it over? ²⁴ Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? Whoever the LORD our God has driven out before us, we will possess it. ²⁵ "'Do you think you are better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever challenge Israel or fight with them? ²⁶ "'Israel has occupied Heshbon and Aroer for three hundred years, and the towns around them, and all the cities on the banks of the Arnon River. Why did you not retake them during that time? ²⁷ "'I have not done you any wrong. You are doing wrong to me by making war on me. the LORD is the judge. He will decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.'" ²⁸ The king of Ammon paid no attention to this message from Jephthah. ²⁹ And the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh. He passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed through to the Ammonites. ³⁰ And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD, and he said, "If indeed you will give the Ammonites into my hand, ³¹ whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return safely from the Ammonites will be the LORD's, and I will offer it as a burnt offering." ³² Jephthah crossed the river to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave him victory. ³³ And he defeated them with a very great blow, from Aroer as far as Minnith, twenty towns, up to Abel Keramim. And the Ammonites were subdued before the Israelites.

¹ Samuels words came to all Israel. Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They camped near Ebenezer while the Philistines camped at Aphek.

¹⁹ No blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel because the Philistines thought, "This will keep the Hebrews from making swords or spears." ²⁰ All the Israelites went down to the Philistines to have their ploughshares, mattocks, axes and sickles sharpened. ²¹ The charge was two-thirds of a shekel for the plowshare and for the mattock, and a third of a shekel for the pick and for the axe, and to set the goading sticks. ²² So on the day of battle, there was not a sword or a spear found in the hands of all the army that was with Saul and Jonathan, but Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

⁵⁰ So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him without a sword in his hand.
