¹ "Does not a human being have hard service on earth? And are not his days like the days of a laborer?

⁵⁰ He shall reckon with him who bought him from the year that he sold himself to him to the Year of Jubilee. The price of his sale shall be according to the number of years; he shall be with him according to the time of a hired servant.

¹⁸ "It should not seem hard to you when you set him free. After all he has given you six years with double the service of a hired man. the LORD your God will bless you in whatever you do.

⁷ Yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

⁵ "Man's days are determined. You have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed. ⁶ "So look away from him and let him alone, till he has put in his time like a hired man.

¹³ "If only you would hide me in the grave (Sheol) and conceal me till your anger has passed! If only you would set a time for me and then remember me! ¹⁴ "If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait for my change (release) to come.

⁴ "Let me know, O LORD, my end, and what is the measure of my days. Let me know how transient I am."

⁸ Just as no human being has control over the wind to restrain it, so also no human being has control over the day of his death. Just as no one is discharged during war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

¹⁶ This is what the LORD says to me: "Within one year, as a servant bound by contract would count it, all the pomp of Kedar will come to an end.

⁵ "Go, and tell Hezekiah, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father, "I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Look, I will add fifteen years to your life.

² Speak comfortably to Jerusalem and cry to her, that her warfare has been completed, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received of the LORD's hand double for all her sins.

¹ For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers to work in his vineyard. ² He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. ³ About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace without anything to do. ⁴ He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard, too, and I will pay you whatever is right.' ⁵ So they went. He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. ⁶ About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ he asked. ⁷ ‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. So he told them, ‘You also go into my vineyard.’ ⁸ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last ones hired and moving on to the first.’ ⁹ The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius. ¹⁰ So when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. ¹¹ When they received it they began grumbling against the landowner ¹² ‘These men who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.’ ¹³ But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Did you not agree with me on one denarius? ¹⁴ Take your pay and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you. ¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?'

⁹ Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light.”
