Therefore my understanding inspires me to reply. ⁴ »Do you not know from of old, ever since man was placed on the earth? ⁵ "The success of the wicked is brief and the joy of the godless lasts but a moment. ⁶ "Though his pride reaches to the heavens and his head touches the clouds, ⁷ he will perish forever like his own dung. Those who have seen him will say: Where is he? ⁸ Like a dream that has fled away, he shall not be found; and he has fled like a vision of the night. ⁹ "The eye that saw him will not see him again. His place (home) will look on him no more. ¹⁰ "His children must make amends to the poor. He must give back his wealth. ¹¹ "The youthful vigor that fills his bones will lie with him in the dust. ¹² "Though evil is sweet in his mouth and he hides it under his tongue, ¹³ though he cannot bear to let it go and keeps it in his mouth, ¹⁴ yet his food will turn sour in his stomach; it will become the venom of serpents within him. ¹⁵ "He will spit out the riches he swallowed. God will make his stomach vomit them up. ¹⁶ "He will suck the poison of serpents. The fangs of an adder (cobra) will kill him. ¹⁷ "He will not look upon the streams, the rivers flowing with honey and cream. ¹⁸ "What he toiled for he must give back uneaten. He will not enjoy the profit from his trading. ¹⁹ "For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor and left them destitute. He has violently seized houses he did not build. ²⁰ »He will have no respite from his craving; he cannot save himself by his treasure. ²¹ "There is nothing left for him to devour; his prosperity will not endure. ²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress will overtake him. The hand of everyone who is in misery will come on him. ²³ "With his belly full, God will vent his burning anger against him and rain down his blows upon him. ²⁴ "Though he flees from an iron weapon, a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him. ²⁵ "He pulls it out of his back, the gleaming point out of his liver. Terrors will come over him. ²⁶ "Total darkness lies in wait for his treasures. A fire will consume him and devour what is left in his tent. ²⁷ "The heavens will expose his guilt. The earth will rise up against him! ²⁸ "A flood will carry off his house. Rushing waters will wash away his possessions on the day of God's wrath. ²⁹ "This is the fate God allots the wicked, the heritage appointed for them by God."

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

¹ Then Zophar the Naamathite responded,

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite did what the LORD told them. And the LORD accepted Job's prayer.

² "If someone tries to talk to you, will you become impatient? But who can keep from talking?

¹⁹ "Can anyone bring charges against me? If so, I will be silent and die.

³ "I hear a rebuke that dishonors me. Therefore my understanding inspires me to reply.

¹³ So do not say, 'We have found wisdom; let God refute him, not a man.' ¹⁴ And he has not directed his words against me; and I will not answer him with your words. ¹⁵ They are broken; they answer no more; words have left them. ¹⁶ And I waited, (for they will not speak, for they stood, they answered no more:) ¹⁷ "I also will give my answer. I also will declare my opinion. ¹⁸ for I am full of words. The spirit within me compels me. ¹⁹ Lo! my bosom, is like wine not opened, Like new wine-skins, it will burst. ²⁰ "I must speak so that I may find relief. I must open my lips and answer.

²² When I was panic-stricken, I said: I have been cut off from your sight. But you heard my pleas for mercy when I cried out to you for help.

² I was dumb and humbled and silent from good things; and my grief was renewed. ³ My heart was hot within me. While I meditated, the fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:

¹¹ I said in my haste, "All men are liars."

²⁹ He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a quick temper displays folly.

²⁰ Do you see a man who speaks hastily? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

⁹ Do not be quick in your spirit to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.

⁹ If I say, I will not make mention of him, or speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones. I am weary with holding it in. I can’t.

²⁵ Immediately the girl hurried back to the king with her request, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."

² For I testify about them that they are zealous for God, but not on the basis of knowledge.

¹⁹ My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,

³ These ten times, have ye reviled me, Shameless ye wrong me.

²⁹ be afraid for yourselves because of the sword, for wrath brings punishment by the sword, so that you may know that there is judgment."

¹¹ "I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal.

³ "My words come from an upright heart! My lips sincerely speak what I know.

³ My mouth will speak words of wisdom. My heart will utter understanding.

² I will open my mouth in parables. I will utter dark sayings of old, ³ That we have heard and known and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their children, telling the next generation the praises of the LORD, and his power and his wonders that he has done. ⁵ He established a decree in Jacob, and established the Law in Israel, that he commanded our ancestors to reveal to their children

²⁸ God blessed them and said to them: "Be fruitful and increase in number. Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and dominate the birds of the air. Have dominion over every living creature that moves on the ground."

¹ God blessed Noah and his sons. He said: "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. ² The fear also and dread of you be upon all beasts of the earth, and upon all fowls of the air, and upon all that creepeth on the earth, and upon all fishes of the sea, which are given unto your hands. ³ "Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

⁹ The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my soul shall be filled with them; I will draw my sword; my hand will destroy them. ¹⁰ You blew with your breath, and the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

²¹ And the Philistines seized him, gouged his eyes, and brought him to Gaza. They tied him up with bronze shackles, and he became a grinder in the prison. ²² But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved off. ²³ Then the lords of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand. ²⁴ And when the people saw him, they sung praises to their god, saying, Our god hath delivered our enemy into our hands; him who wasted our land, and multiplied the number of our slain. ²⁵ When their hearts were merry they said, Call for Samson so that he can entertain us. They called Samson out of the prison, and he performed before them. All the lords of the Philistines were there, and on the roof there were about three thousand men and women watching while Samson performed. ²⁸ Samson called to the LORD and said, Sovereign LORD, remember me please, and strengthen me please, just this once oh God, that I may with one blow be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes. ²⁹ Then Samson grabbed the two middle pillars upon which the house rested and braced himself against them with one pillar in his right hand and the other in his left. ³⁰ Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines! He pushed with all his might and the house fell on the lords and on all the people who were there. So he killed more in his death than he killed in his life.

¹¹ And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and his many sons, and all to which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king. ¹² Haman added:Indeed, queen Esther let no one save me come with the king to the banquet that she gave; and also tomorrow I am invited to her with the king.

¹⁰ Then they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. And the king's fury subsided.

³ I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly I cursed his dwelling.

¹² "While still growing and uncut, they wither more quickly than grass. ¹³ "Such is the destiny of all who forget God. The hope of the godless will perish.

¹⁹ »Its life withers away and other plants grow from the soil.

²⁹ "He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. ³⁰ "He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. ³¹ "Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless. He will get nothing in return. ³² "Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. ³³ "He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. ³⁴ »The company of the godless will be barren. And fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.

⁵ "The lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. The flame of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ "The light in his tent becomes dark. The lamp beside him will be put out.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

¹³ "Here is the fate God accords the wicked. This is the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty: ¹⁴ "No mater how many his children, their fate is the sword. His offspring will never have enough to eat. ¹⁵ "The plague will bury those who survive him. Their widows will not weep for them. ¹⁶ "Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay, ¹⁷ what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver. ¹⁸ "The house he builds is like a moth's cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but will do so no more; he openeth his eyes, and he is not. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest snatches him away in the night. ²¹ "The east wind carries him off. He is gone and it sweeps him out of his place. ²² "It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power. ²³ It claps its hands over him, and it hisses at him from its place.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading like a green tree in its native soil: ³⁶ yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not; and I looked for him, but he could not be found.

¹⁸ Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down into ruin. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

²¹ "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.

²⁰ But he who received the seed on rocky places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; ²¹ But since he has no root, he remains for only a season. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

²² The people kept shouting, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man!" ²³ Immediately, because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

⁴ Each one should test his own work. Then he will have reason to boast in himself alone, and not in someone else.

¹⁶ As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

⁴ Then they said: "Let us build ourselves a city, with a lofty tower that reaches into space, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

¹³ You said in your heart, "I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north. ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High."

¹¹ The tree grew large, became strong, and its top reached the sky. It could be seen to the ends of the earth.

²² it's you, your majesty! You've become great and strong, your greatness has grown to the heavens, and your dominion reaches to the distant parts of the earth.

² Though they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them and though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.

³ The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of a rock, the heights of its dwelling, you who say in your heart: 'Who can bring me down to the ground?' ⁴ Even if you soar like the eagle, even if your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down!" declares the LORD:

²³ And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will descend to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had happened in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

¹⁰ Therefore, look, I am about to bring disaster upon the house of Jeroboam, and I will cut off males from Jeroboam, bond or free, in Israel. I will burn after the house of Jeroboam as one burns after the manure, until it is finished.

³⁷ And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel so that no one shall be able to say, This is Jezebel.

²⁰ Between morning and evening they are destroyed; without anyone regarding it they perish forever.

¹⁰ He shall turn back no more to his house, and his place shall know him no more.

¹⁸ "When it is torn from its spot, that place disowns it and says: 'I never saw you.'

¹⁰ "On the other hand man dies and is laid low. He breathes his last and is no more!

¹⁰ who perished at Endor, and became as the dung of the earth.

² They'll be spread out to the sun, the moon, and all the stars of the heavens, which they loved and served, and which they followed, consulted, and worshiped. Their bones won't be collected, nor will they be buried. They'll be like dung on the surface of the ground.

¹⁸ "He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world.

¹⁰ He rode upon a cherub and flew; he soared upon the wings of the wind.

²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

⁵ You sweep mortals away in the sleep of death. They sprout again in the morning like grass.

⁷ The multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all who fight against her and her stronghold, and who distress her, will be like a dream, a vision of the night. ⁸ And it will be as when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he eats. But he awakes and his soul is empty. Or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he drinks. But he awakes, and behold, he is faint and his soul has appetite. So will the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion.

⁸ The eye of him who sees me will see me no longer: your eyes will be looking for me, but I will be gone.

⁷ he will perish forever like his own dung. Those who have seen him will say: Where is he?

³ "As long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils,

¹⁰ For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn’t there.

³⁶ yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not; and I looked for him, but he could not be found.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: his beautiful growth is like the flower of the field. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.

² "If you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them in slavery,

³⁶ The LORD had given the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, so that they gave them what they requested; and so they plundered the Egyptians.

¹ »A man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it. He must pay five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

³ If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

⁶ He shall restore the ewe fourfold, because he did this thing, and had no pity.

⁸ Now Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I repay them quadruple.

²⁶ »You write down bitter things against me and make me inherit the sins of my youth.

²⁰ I'm a pile of skin and bones; I have barely escaped by the skin of my teeth."

²⁶ They lie together in the soil, And worms cover them both.

⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to your mercy remember me for your goodness' sake, O LORD.

¹¹ and you groan at your end, when your flesh and body are consumed, ¹² And you say, How I have hated discipline, And my heart has spurned correction!" ¹³ I did not obey my teachers and did not listen to my instructors.

²² The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly. ²³ He will die for lack of discipline, and he goes astray because of his great folly.

³² The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge.

¹³ In your uncleanness is obscene conduct, because I cleansed you, but you were not clean from your uncleanness; you will not be clean again until ⌊I fully vent my rage⌋ on you.

²⁷ »‘They do not lie with the godless warriors who died and went down to the grave with their weapons of war. Their swords were placed under their heads. Their iniquity rested on their bones because they terrified others in the land of the living.

²¹ Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”

²⁴ I told you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.

²⁵ to take this place of service as an apostle which Judas left to go where he belonged."

⁶ When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

¹⁶ how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water!

⁷ His mouth is full of curses, deception, and oppression. Trouble and wrongdoing are on the tip of his tongue.

¹⁷ Yea, he loved cursing, and it came to him; he also had no pleasure in blessing, and it was far from him. ¹⁸ He put on cursing like a robe, and it has come into his body like water, and into his bones like oil.

¹⁷ "Stolen waters are sweet, and food eaten in secret is delicious." ¹⁸ But he doesn't know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

¹⁸ “Say to the people, 'Sanctify yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, and you will eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat. ¹⁹ You will not eat just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, ²⁰ but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you; because you have rejected the LORD who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt?”'”

²⁹ If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. ³⁰ And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to depart into hell.

⁴³ If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, to the fire that shall never be quenched.

⁴⁵ And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

⁴⁷ And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, ⁴⁸ 'where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.' ⁴⁹ Everyone will be salted with fire.

¹³ For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

²⁴ While they are wasting by famine, and voracious birds; The burning carbuncle also shall be incurable; I will send against them the teeth of wild beasts, With the venom of serpents, trailing on the ground.

² At evening, David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look at. ³ David sent and inquired after the woman. ³ When I kept silence, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. ⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy on me. My strength was sapped in the heat of summer. Selah.

¹ A psalm of David. To bring to remembrance. O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or chastise me in your wrath. ² For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down on me. ³ My body is unhealthy due to your anger, and my bones have no rest due to my sin. ⁴ My guilt has overwhelmed me. Like a heavy load, it is more than I can bear. ⁵ My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am bowed down; I am bent over greatly. All the day I go about mourning. ⁷ For my soul is filled with mockings; and there is no health in my flesh. ⁸ I give way and am utterly crushed. I roar out of the anguish of my heart.

⁸ Make me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. ⁹ Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

³¹ Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with the fruit of their own schemes.

²⁰ Do not be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat: ²¹ for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

²⁹ Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? ³⁰ To those who linger over wine, to those who come to try mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ³² In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper. ³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things. ³⁴ Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging: ³⁵ "They struck me," you will say, "but I never felt it. They beat me, but I never knew it When will I wake up? I want another drink."

¹⁹ Your wickedness will chastise you, and your apostasies will reprove you. Therefore know and see that it is evil and bitter, your forsaking of the LORD, your God, and fear of me is not in you," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

² If you will not listen, and if you will not take it to heart to give glory to my name," says the LORD of hosts, "then I will send the curse on you, and I will curse your blessings; moreover I have already cursed them because you are not taking it to heart.

¹³ Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit; the venom of vipers is on their lips;

⁸ You vomit the morsel you eat and waste your complements.

² The personal attendant of the king said to Elisha: "If the LORD could make floodgates in the heavens could this happen?" Elisha replied: "You will see it with your own eyes. But you will not eat from it."

⁶ When I bathed my steps in cream, and the rock poured out near me streamlets of oil!

⁸ They are refreshed with the fullness of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. ⁹ For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.

¹⁶ "I would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."

¹⁵ He will eat butter and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right.

²² and so be it, for the abundance of milk that they work he eats butter: for every one who remains in the land eats butter and honey.

¹⁷ "The poor and needy search for water, but there is none! Their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them. I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

⁶ And he will be like a juniper in the wilderness, and he will not see when good comes, and he will dwell in the parched places in the desert, in a land of salt flats, where no one lives. ⁷ Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose confidence is in the LORD. ⁸ "For he will be like a tree planted by the water. It extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes. Its leaves will be green. It will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit.

²⁴ So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’

¹ Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb,

⁵ "The success of the wicked is brief and the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.

¹⁰ "His children must make amends to the poor. He must give back his wealth.

¹⁵ "He will spit out the riches he swallowed. God will make his stomach vomit them up.

²⁵ If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.

²⁹ "If I have rejoiced at the ruin of the one who hated me or have exulted when evil overtook him—

¹² Let's swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those who go down into the pit.

⁷ The new wine dries up; the vine languishes. All the merry of heart sigh; ⁸ the joy of the tambourine has stopped. The noise of the jubilant has ceased; the joy of the lyre has stopped. ⁹ They no longer drink wine with a song. The beverage is bitter to its drinkers. ¹⁰ The ruined city lies desolate. The entrance to every house is barred and none may enter. ¹¹ In the streets they cry out for wine. Joy turns to gloom and rejoicing is banished from the earth.

¹⁵ What has my beloved to do in my house, seeing she has worked lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from you? when you do evil, then you rejoice. ¹⁶ the LORD called your name, 'A leafy olive tree, beautiful with fine fruit.' With the sound of a great storm he will set fire to it, and its branches will be good for nothing.

¹³ Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness and his upper rooms without justice; his neighbor serves without pay, and he does not give him for his work;

¹⁷ But your eyes and your heart are not, Except on your dishonest gain, And on shedding of innocent blood, And on oppression, and on doing of violence."

³⁴ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me. He has crushed me. He has made me an empty vessel. He has, like a monster, swallowed me up. He has filled his stomach with my delicacies. He has cast me out.

⁴⁴ I'll punish Bel in Babylon, and I'll make what he has swallowed come out of his mouth. The nations will no longer stream to him. Even the wall of Babylon will fall.

¹⁶ All your enemies have opened their mouth wide against you; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it!

¹² The time has come; the day has arrived. Let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn; for wrath is on all her multitude.

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they reap the whirlwind. He has no stalk; the bud shall make no flour. If it does make it, strangers will swallow it up. ⁸ Israel is swallowed up. Now they are among the nations like a worthless thing.

¹ Do not rejoice, Israel, to jubilation like the nations; for you were unfaithful to your God. You love the wages of a prostitute at every grain threshing floor.

⁴ Hear this, you who trample the needy, and destroy the poor of the land,

¹³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter.

²⁴ You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded. ⁹ Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning, and your joy to gloom.

³³ A people whom you don't know will devour what your land and labor produces. You'll be only oppressed and discouraged continually

³ Here I am. Witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Of whose hand have I taken a bribe to make me blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.” ⁴ They said, "You haven't cheated us or oppressed us, and you haven't taken anything from anyone's hand."

¹⁹ You shall speak to him, saying, 'the LORD says, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”' You shall speak to him, saying, 'the LORD says, “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs will lick your blood, even yours.”'”

¹⁵ "Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling.

²⁷ "Look, I know your thoughts, the devices with which you would wrong me. ²⁸ You ask, 'Where is the noble person's house?' and 'Where are the tents where the wicked live?'

⁶ For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.

² They move boundary stones, steal flocks, and pasture them. ³ They drive away the donkey of orphans; they take the widow's ox as a pledge. ⁴ They push the needy off the road, and force the poor of the land into hiding. ⁵ "Like wild donkeys in the desert they go out to their toil. They search in the wasteland food for their young. ⁶ They reap fodder in the field and glean in the vineyard of the wicked. ⁷ They spend the night naked, without clothing with no covering against the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the showers of hills, and embrace the rock for lack of shelter. ⁹ "The fatherless are torn from the breast; the poor are taken away as security for a loan. ¹⁰ They cause the naked to go without clothing, and they take away the sheaves from the hungry. ¹¹ They press out oil within their walls, they tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst. ¹² From the city, dying men groan aloud, and the wounded cries out for help, but God charges no one with wrong.

¹³ If I have slighted the cause of my man servant or maid servant when they had a controversy with me, ¹⁴ what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ if I have eaten my morsel alone, and have not shared it with the orphan; ¹⁸ for from my youth I reared the orphan like a father, and from my mother's womb I guided the widow. ¹⁹ If I have seen any perishing for want of clothing, or any needy without covering; ²⁰ If his heart has not blessed me, and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have raised a hand against the fatherless, because I had around me greater support: ²² Then let my arm fall from my shoulder-blade, and my arm be broken from the bone.

³⁸ If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together; ³⁹ If I have eaten its yield without payment, and caused the death of its owners;

⁹ From the multitude of oppressions they will cry out: they will cry out from the arm of the many.

¹⁸ to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that man who is of the earth may terrify no more.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, says the LORD; I will set him in safety from those who malign him.

³¹ He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.

²² Do not exploit the poor, because he is poor; and do not crush the needy in court; ²³ for the LORD will plead their cause, and strip the soul of those who plunder them.

¹ And I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors was power, and they had no comforter.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, don't marvel at the matter: for one official is eyed by a higher one; and there are officials over them.

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD Almighty is the house of Israel, and the man of Judah is the plantation of his delight. And he waited for justice, but look! Bloodshed! For righteousness, but look! A cry of distress! ⁸ Woe to those who join house to house, who lay field to field, till there is no room, and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!

³⁴ To crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,

²⁹ The people in the land useth wicked extortion and robbery. They vex the poor and needy and oppress the stranger against right.

¹ Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are in the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their lords, Bring and let us drink. ² The Sovereign LORD has sworn by His holiness that the days are coming that He will lift you up with meat hooks, and the last of you with fishhooks. ³ Each of you will go out through the breaches of the walls straight to Mt. Hermon," declares the LORD.

² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance.

⁹ Ye cast out the women of my people from their pleasant houses. Ye take away my glory from their young sons forever.

⁶ But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court?

¹³ For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

⁴ Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.

¹³ There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: wealth hoarded by its owner to his harm. ¹⁴ Those riches perish by misfortune, and if he has fathered a son, there is nothing in his hand.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea, which cannot rest, and whose waters cast up mire and dirt. ²¹ "There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."

²⁹ "He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land.

¹⁹ "He has no offspring or descendants among his people, no survivor where once he lived.

¹¹ Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay is one who amasses wealth without justice. In the middle of his days it will leave him, and at his end he will prove to be a fool."

²⁴ So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’ ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

² the LORD sent raiding parties of Babylonians, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites against Jehoiakim to destroy Judah as the LORD predicted through his servants the prophets.

¹⁵ And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

¹⁷ While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest;

¹¹ God has delivered me over to the ungodly, throwing me into the control of the wicked.

⁷ "The vigor of his step is weakened. His own schemes will bring his downfall.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days mere handbreadths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath. Selah.

¹⁸ I hated all the work I had done under the sun, because I would leave it behind for the man who comes after me. ¹⁹ And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. ²⁰ So I began to despair of all the toil with which I toiled under the sun.

⁶ "I send him against a godless nation. I commission him against the people of my fury to capture booty and to seize plunder, and to trample them down like mud (clay) in the streets.

⁷ give her torment and pain in proportion to her pride and luxury; for she said in her heart, "I am enthron'd like a queen, I am no widow, and shall see no sorrow."

²⁴ And the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.

²³ When Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, the LORD sent thunder and hail, and lightning struck the earth. The LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt.

³³ And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very great plague.

⁶ On the wicked he will rain blazing coals; fire, sulfur, and scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.

³⁰ But they were not turned from their desires; and while the food was still in their mouths, ³¹ The wrath of God came on them, and put to death the fattest of them, and put an end to the young men of Israel.

⁴ My heart failed, darkness amazed me: Babylon my beloved is become a wonder to me.

¹⁷ And he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' ¹⁸ Then he said: ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my produce and my goods. ¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?'

³⁵ He trains my hands for the war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

³⁰ But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city. And there a wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of those remaining. And Ben-hadad fled and came into the city, into an inner room.

²³ until an arrow pierces his entrails, like a bird rushing into a snare, but he does not know that it will cost him his life.

¹⁸ And it comes that the one fleeing from the awful sound shall fall into the pit. And the ascender from the midst of the pit shall be seized in a snare. For the crevices of the heights are opened, and the foundations of the earth shall quake."

⁴³ Terror and pit and snare are upon thee O inhabitant of Moab Declareth the LORD: ⁴⁴ He who flees from the dread shall fall into the pit. And he who goes up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare. For I will bring it on Moab, the year of their punishment, declares the LORD.

¹⁹ It will be as if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him; or he went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall and a snake bit him.

¹ I saw the LORD standing beside the altar. He said: "Strike the capitals that the thresholds may shake! Break them in pieces on the head of all of them and I will slay the last of them with the sword. Not one of them will get away. Not one of them will escape! ² Though they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them and though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down. ³ Though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out there; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.

⁴¹ if I sharpen my glittering sword, my hand grasps it in judgment; I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will repay those who hate me.

¹⁴ And Joab said, I will not wait this wait before you. And he took three darts in his hand and struck them into Absalom's heart while he was alive, in the midst of the oak.

⁴ "The Almighty's arrows are in me. My spirit drinks in their poison. God's terrors set themselves against me.

²¹ "Terrifying sounds fill his ears. When all seems well, marauders attack him.

¹³ "His arrows surround me. Without mercy he splits my kidneys open. He pours out my gall on the ground.

¹¹ "Terrors startle him on every side and chase him at his heels.

²⁰ Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest snatches him away in the night.

¹² If a man doesn't relent, he will sharpen his sword; he has bent and strung his bow.

¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.

¹⁵ Ever since I was young, I have been suffering and near death. I have endured your terrors, and now I am in despair.

³ The next day Pashur released Jeremiah from the stocks, and Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD has not named you Pashur, but rather Magor-missabib. ⁴ For the LORD says, 'Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them captive to Babylon, and will kill them with the sword.

¹¹ Therefore, since we know what it means to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is clear to God, and I hope it is clear to your conscience as well.

¹⁸ "He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world. ¹⁹ "He has no offspring or descendants among his people, no survivor where once he lived.

⁹ When you appear, you will set them ablaze like a fire furnace. In his wrath, the LORD will consume them, and the fire will devour them.

⁹ May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ may his children be wandering beggars, let them be sought from their ruins. ¹¹ Let the creditor seize all that he has. Let strangers plunder the fruit of his labor. ¹² May no one extend gracious love to him, or show favor to his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his descendants be cut off. Let their name be blotted out in the next generation. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his ancestors be remembered before the LORD, and let the sin of his mother not be blotted out. ¹⁵ let them be always before the LORD, so that He may cut off the memory of them from the earth;

⁴ The arrows of the hero sharpened, with burning coals of broom.

²² and they will look to the earth; and behold, trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they shall be driven into thick darkness.

²⁰ You will not join them in burial, because you have destroyed your land. You have killed your people. The offspring of evildoers will not be mentioned forever. ²¹ prepare thy sons for slaughter, for the sins of their fathers; that they may not rise and possess the land, and fill the World with wars. ²² For I will rise up against them, says the LORD Almighty, and cut off from Babylon the name and remnant, and son, and grandson, says the LORD.

³³ For a place of fire has long been ready; yes, it has been made ready for the king; he has made it deep and wide: it is massed with fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of fire, puts a light to it.

¹² His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."

¹² But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

¹³ They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.

²⁸ Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.

¹⁸ "Earth, do not cover my blood. Let my cry have no place to rest.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a strange god, ²¹ would not God discover this, for he knows the secrets of the heart?

²¹ Behold! the LORD is coming out of his dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose (reveal) the bloodshed upon her. She will conceal her slain no longer.

²³ because they did something stupid in Israel. They committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and in my name they spoke lies that I didn't command them. I'm the one who knows, and I'm a witness," declares the LORD.'"

⁵ I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and do not fear me," says the LORD of hosts.

² There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. ³ What you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the housetops.

¹⁶ This will come to pass on that day when God will judge men’s secrets through Christ Jesus, as proclaimed by my gospel.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the proper time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.

³¹ Your ox will be slain before your eyes and you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be violently taken away from before your face and will not be restored to you. Your sheep will be given to your enemies and you will have none to save you.

¹⁷ Behold, the days come that all that is in your house and what your fathers have laid up in store to this day, will be carried to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.

⁵ The hungry eat his harvest, and take him to the thorns, and the snare snuffs up their wealth.

¹⁸ "What he toiled for he must give back uneaten. He will not enjoy the profit from his trading. ¹⁹ "For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor and left them destitute. He has violently seized houses he did not build. ²⁰ »He will have no respite from his craving; he cannot save himself by his treasure. ²¹ "There is nothing left for him to devour; his prosperity will not endure. ²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress will overtake him. The hand of everyone who is in misery will come on him.

³⁰ that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, that they are led forth to the day of wrath?

¹⁴ "No mater how many his children, their fate is the sword. His offspring will never have enough to eat. ¹⁵ "The plague will bury those who survive him. Their widows will not weep for them. ¹⁶ "Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay, ¹⁷ what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver. ¹⁸ "The house he builds is like a moth's cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but will do so no more; he openeth his eyes, and he is not.

⁴ Wealth cannot profit on the day of wrath; but righteousness deliver from death.

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

²⁶ What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

¹ Come on now, you rich people, cry and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your wealth has rotted and moths have eaten your clothing. ³ Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days.

¹⁷ In one hour such great wealth has been laid waste!' And every shipmaster and all passengers and sailors, and all who make their living by the sea, stood far off,

²⁰ the LORD will never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and / His jealousy will burn against that man. Every curse which is written in this book will rest on him. the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven. ²¹ The LORD will set him apart from all the tribes of Israel for destruction, according to the curses of the covenant that were written in this book of the Law." ²² »The next generation of your children and foreigners who come from distant countries will see the plagues that have happened in this land and the diseases the LORD sent here. ²³ [that] the whole land of it is brimstone, and salt, [and] a burning, [that] it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which LORD overthrew in his anger, and i ²⁴ "All the nations will say: Why has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?' ²⁵ Then they will answer themselves, 'Because they've abandoned the covenant of their LORD, the God of their ancestors that he had made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods whom they did not know them and he had not allotted to them. ²⁷ Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, to bring on it all the curses that are written in this book. ²⁸ Yahweh rooted them out of their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and thrust them into another land, as it is today.”

²¹ "This is the dwelling of an evil man! This is the place of one who does not know God!"

¹³ "Here is the fate God accords the wicked. This is the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:

² "What is man's lot from God above, his heritage from the Almighty on high? ³ "Is it not ruin for the wicked, disaster for those who do wrong?

⁵ The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked and the one who loves violence his soul hates. ⁶ On the wicked he will rain blazing coals; fire, sulfur, and scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.

³⁸ Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that disaster and good will come?

⁵¹ and he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
