Or he who is born of woman, that he could be righteous? ¹⁵ "If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, ¹⁶ how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! ¹⁷ "Listen to me and I will explain to you what I have seen. ¹⁸ "What have wise men declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers, ¹⁹ to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them? ²⁰ "All his days the wicked man suffers torment and the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. ²¹ "Terrifying sounds fill his ears. When all seems well, marauders attack him. ²² "He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. ²³ "He wanders about as food for vultures and he knows the day of darkness is at hand. ²⁴ "Distress and anguish fill him with terror. They overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack. ²⁵ because he stretches out his hand against God, and sets himself against the Almighty. ²⁶ "He defiantly charges against him with a thick, strong shield. ²⁷ »His face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh. ²⁸ "He will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. ²⁹ "He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. ³⁰ "He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. ³¹ "Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless. He will get nothing in return. ³² "Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. ³³ "He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. ³⁴ »The company of the godless will be barren. And fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. ³⁵ "They conceive trouble and give birth to evil. Their womb fashions deceit."

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

⁷ And it happened after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite did what the LORD told them. And the LORD accepted Job's prayer.

²⁶ "Do you mean to correct what I say? Do you treat the words of a despairing man as wind?

² "How long will you say such things? Your words are a blustering wind.

² "Are all these words to go unanswered? Is this talker to be vindicated? ³ "Should your idle talk reduce men to silence? Should no one rebuke you when you mock?

² What you know, I also know; I am not inferior to you.

¹ Ephraim herds the wind and is pursuing the east wind all day long; he multiplies deception and violence and he makes a treaty with Assyria, and oil is brought to Egypt.

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

⁴ For, in truth, ye, do besmear with falsehood, Worthless physicians, all of you! ⁵ "If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom.

² I have heard many things like these; Miserable comforters are you all. ³ Will windy words like yours never end? What is upsetting you that you keep on arguing?

¹ To this Job replied, ² How have you helped the powerless, or saved the arm with no strength? ³ How you have counseled one without wisdom, And the reality of things you have abundantly made known!"

¹³ "You have spoken arrogant words against me," says the LORD. "Yet you ask, 'What did we say against you?' ¹⁴ You have said, 'It is useless to serve God! What is the gain if we keep his requirements, and if we walk as mourners before the LORD of hosts? ¹⁵ Now we call the proud blessed; indeed, evildoers prosper. They even tempt God and escape.'

³⁶ But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. ³⁷ For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

⁶ Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

⁴ he is conceited and understands nothing. Instead, he has an unhealthy interest in controversies and semantics, out of which come envy, strife, abusive talk, evil suspicions, ⁵ and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a means of gain.

¹³ Saul died because of his unfaithfulness to the LORD. He did not obey the word of the LORD (YHWH). He asked a medium to request information from a dead person. ¹⁴ and didn’t inquire of the LORD. Therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

⁵ But now it has come to you, and you are worn out; it touches you, and you are horrified. ⁶ Is not your pious fear your confidence, And your flawless ways your expectation?

⁸ But as for me, I would make my prayer to God, and I would put my cause before him:

¹⁴ "A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends, even though he forsakes his reverence for the Almighty.

¹⁰ "Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times?

¹ For the Chief Musician. By David, the servant of the LORD. An oracle is within my heart about the disobedience of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, too much to detect and hate his sin. ³ The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

¹²⁶ It is time to act, LORD, for they break your Law.

¹⁴ They haven’t cried to me with their heart, but they howl on their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They turn away from me.

¹⁰ "When a man's relative carries him, even he who burns him, to bring bodies out of the house, and asks him who is in the innermost parts of the house, 'Is there yet any with you?' And he says, 'No;' then he will say, 'Hush. Indeed we must not mention the name of the LORD.'

⁶ and those who turned back from following the LORD, and who did not seek the LORD, and did not inquire of him."

¹ Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and never despair.

³¹ Do we, then, nullify the Law by this faith? By no means! Instead, we uphold the Law.

²¹ I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness comes through the Law, Christ died for nothing.”

¹³ He is capturing the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are rushed.

²² "It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked. ²³ If a calamity causes sudden death, he'll mock at the despair of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He covers the faces of its judges. If it is not He, then who is it?

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper. Those who provoke God are secure, who carry their god in their hands.

¹⁹ you spread your mouth to evil and contrive your tongue to deceit: ²⁰ You sit; you speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son.

² Your tongue devises woes, Like a honed razor, you who practice deceit." ³ You love evil more than good, lying rather than speaking the truth. Selah. ⁴ You love all pernicious words, O you deceitful tongue."

³ who sharpen their tongues like swords, and aim their bitter words like arrows,

² Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue! ³ What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you, deceitful tongue?

³ They use their tongues like a bow. Lies rather than truth fly throughout the land. They progress from one evil to another, and they don't know me," declares the LORD. ⁴ Everyone beware of his neighbor, and do not trust any brother! For every brother will supplant his neighbor, and will walk with slanders. ⁵ Friends deceive each other, and will not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak lies. They weary themselves commiting iniquity.

⁸ "Their tongue is a deadly arrow. It speaks deceit! With the mouth one speaks peace to his neighbor, but inwardly he sets an ambush for him."

²¹ For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, ²² Greed, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, haughtiness, folly;

⁴⁵ The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.

²⁶ If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless.

⁵ So also the tongue is a small member and makes great boasts. Behold, how great a forest is set on fire by a little spark! ⁶ The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. ⁷ All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, ⁸ But no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

²⁰ »Though I was righteous, my own mouth would condemn me. If I were blameless it would prove me perverse.

⁸ »You have said in my hearing, I heard the very words: ⁹ "I am pure and without sin! I am clean and free from guilt. ¹⁰ "Yet God has found fault with me. He considers me his enemy! ¹¹ "He fastens my feet in shackles and he keeps close watch on all my paths. ¹² "But I tell you, Job, in this you are not right, for God is greater than man.

⁵ "Job has said: 'I am innocent, and God has taken away my right. ⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am considered a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without disobedience.' ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water, ⁸ Who goes in company with evildoers, and walks with wicked men? ⁹ For he has said, It profits a man nothing when he is accepted with God.

² "Do you think this to be just? You say: 'I am in the right before God.' ³ that you said, What use is it to you? and, What benefit I from my sin?

⁸ "Would you undo my justice? Would you condemn me so that you can be righteous?

³ "You asked: 'Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge? Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.'

⁸ Their own tongues shall ruin them; all who see them will shake their heads.

³⁷ For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard his blasphemy.

²² He said to him, 'I will judge you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a hard man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?

¹ Adam had sexual intercourse with his wife Eve. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said: "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."

¹² "Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?

¹⁰ "The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father.

⁴ "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. ⁵ "Who determined its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? ⁶ "On what were its foundations set and who laid its cornerstone? ⁷ while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ "Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb? ⁹ "When I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, ¹⁰ when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, ¹¹ when I said: 'This far you may come and no farther'; here is where your proud waves halt? ¹² "Have you ever commanded the morning, or shown the dawn its place? ¹³ »It might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it? ¹⁴ "The earth takes shape like clay under a seal. Its features stand out like those of a garment. ¹⁵ "The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken. ¹⁶ "Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? ¹⁷ "Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ "Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this. ¹⁹ "Where is the way to the dwelling of light? You have lived so many years! ²² "Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail? ²³ "These I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle. ²⁴ "What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed, or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth? ²⁵ "Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm? ²⁶ "Who waters a land where no man lives, a desert with no one in it? ²⁷ Who satisfies a desolate wasteland to make it sprout with grass? ²⁸ Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew? ²⁹ "From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens ³⁰ when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen? ³¹ "Can you bind the beautiful Pleiades? Can you loose the cords of Orion? ³² Can you bring out the constellations in their season; or can you guide the Bear with its sons? ³³ "Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth? ³⁴ "Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water? ³⁵ "Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you: Here we are? ³⁶ "Who endowed the innermost being with wisdom or gave understanding to the mind? ³⁷ "Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens? ³⁸ This when the dust becomes hard and the clods of earth stick together? ³⁹ "Do you hunt the prey for the lioness and satisfy the hunger of the lions ⁴⁰ when they crouch in their dens or lie in wait in a thicket? ⁴¹ "Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?

² Before the mountains were born and you brought forth the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

²² "the LORD possessed me, the first of his ways, before his acts of old. ²³ I was set up from eternity, from the beginning, before the earth was. ²⁴ When there were no depths, I was born, when there were no springs abounding with water. ²⁵ Before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was born;

²⁹ The secret things belong to the LORD our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

⁶ and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.

² "Doubtless you are the people, and wisdom will die with you!

⁵ "If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom. ⁶ "Hear my argument. Listen to the plea of my lips.

⁴ as when I was in the days of my prime, when God's confiding was over my house,

¹⁴ The Lord is the strength of them who fear him; and it is his covenant to display it for them.

³² the LORD hates people who do evil. He takes righteous people into his confidence.

¹⁸ For which of them hath stood in the council of the Lord and seen? who hath hearkened and heard his voice?"

⁷ "The Sovereign LORD will do nothing without revealing his secrets to his servants the prophets.

²⁵ At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

¹¹ He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

³⁵ So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

¹⁵ I no longer call you servants, because the servant knows not what his master does. But I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

³⁴ Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counsellor?

²⁵ Now to Him who is able to strengthen you by my gospel and by the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery concealed for ages past, ²⁶ but now revealed and made known through the writings of the prophets by the command of the eternal God, in order to lead all the nations to the obedience that comes from faith—

⁹ Rather, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.” ¹⁰ But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. ¹¹ For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit which is in him? Even so no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

¹⁶ For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

³ »I have a mind as well as you! I am not inferior to you! Who does not know all these things?

³ How you have counseled one without wisdom, And the reality of things you have abundantly made known!" ⁴ To whom have you uttered words? and whose spirit came from you?

⁷ You are looking at outward appearances. If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, he should remind himself that we belong to Christ just as much as he does.

⁵ I think that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles.

²¹ To my shame, I must say that we were too weak for that! But whatever anyone else dares to boast aboutI am speaking as a foolI also dare to boast about. ²² Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they among Abraham's descendants? So am I. ²³ Are they servants of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself.) I am more so: in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, and in deaths often. ²⁴ Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked. I spent a night and a day in the open sea. ²⁶ I have been on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, in danger from robbers, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from Gentiles, in danger in the city, in danger in the wilderness, in danger at sea, and in danger from false brethren; ²⁷ in labor and toil and often without sleep, in hunger and thirst and often without food, in cold and exposure. ²⁸ Besides everything else, I have a daily burden because of my anxiety about all the churches. ²⁹ Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I do not inwardly burn? ³⁰ If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

⁷ Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

⁸ "Ask the former generations and find out what their fathers learned. ⁹ "After all we were born only yesterday and know nothing, and our days on earth are a mere shadow. ¹⁰ "Will they not instruct you and tell you? Will they not bring forth words from their understanding?

²⁰ "He silences the lips of trusted advisers and takes away the discernment of elders.

⁶ Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite answered: "I am young in years, and you are aged; therefore I was timid and afraid to declare my opinion to you. ⁷ I said, 'Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.'

³¹ Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is attained by a life of righteousness.

²⁴ Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah came near and slapped Micaiah on the cheek and said, "When did the Spirit of the LORD pass from me to speak with you?"

⁸ But as for me, I would make my prayer to God, and I would put my cause before him: ⁹ "He does great things that we cannot understand and miracles that we cannot count. ¹⁰ Who gives rain on the earth, and sends water on the fields: ¹¹ to set the lowly on high, and those mourning are lifted to safety. ¹² He frustrates the plans of the crafty; so that what they work for never succeeds. ¹³ He is capturing the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are rushed. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But He saves the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth. ¹⁷ "Blessed is the person whom God corrects. Do not despise discipline from the Almighty. ¹⁸ For he wounds and binds up. He injures and his hands make whole. ¹⁹ From six troubles he will deliver you, and in seven evil shall not touch you. ²⁰ In famine, He will ransom you from death, And in battle from the hands of the sword. ²¹ "You will be protected from the sharp tongue and you will not be afraid when destruction comes. ²² You'll laugh at destruction and famine; and you need not fear the beasts of the earth. ²³ For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, And the wild animal of the field will be at peace with you. ²⁴ You will know peace in your tent. You will inspect your house and find nothing missing. ²⁵ "You will find that your children are many and your descendants are like the grass of the earth. ²⁶ You shall come to the grave in full vigor, like a stack of grain comes up in its season.

¹³ "Yet if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him, ¹⁴ if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent, ¹⁵ then you will lift up your face without shame. You will stand firm without fear. ¹⁶ "You will forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by. ¹⁷ "Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like morning. ¹⁸ "You will be secure because there is hope. You will look about you and take your rest in safety. ¹⁹ Also you will lie down, and no one will make you afraid. Yes, many will court your favor.

⁸ "Have you heard God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?

¹⁶ "He would bring you out of the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, ⁴ who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. ⁵ For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

⁶ But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,

¹³ "Yet if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him,

² »Mockers surrounded me. My eye dwells on their provocation.

¹⁹ Let not those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me. Nor let those who hate me without cause wink the eye.

¹³ who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers,

⁹ Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

³ Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land? ⁴ Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!”

²² Repent, therefore, of your wickedness, and pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will forgive you for the intent of your heart.

¹⁴ But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. ¹⁵ Then when passion has conceived it gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is full grown, gives birth to death.

⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and succeeded?

³ "'Does it please you to oppress me, to spurn the work of your hands, while you smile on the schemes of the wicked?

²⁵ because he stretches out his hand against God, and sets himself against the Almighty. ²⁶ "He defiantly charges against him with a thick, strong shield. ²⁷ »His face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh.

¹³ Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.

¹³ "You have spoken arrogant words against me," says the LORD. "Yet you ask, 'What did we say against you?'

⁷ because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s Law, nor can it do so. ⁸ Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.

² We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body. ³ When we put bits into the mouths of the horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal. ⁴ Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot is inclined. ⁵ So also the tongue is a small member and makes great boasts. Behold, how great a forest is set on fire by a little spark! ⁶ The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

⁴⁶ "If they sin against you (for there is not a person who does not sin) and you are angry with them and you give them to an enemy and they take them captive to the land of the enemy far or near,

³⁶ When they sin against you—for there is no person who does not sin—and you become angry with them and place them before their enemy that they carry them away as captives to a land far or near,

² Truly I know that this is so, Yet how can a mortal be righteous before El?

⁴ "Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one!

⁴ "How then can a man be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure? ⁵ "If even the moon is not bright and the stars are not pure in his eyes, ⁶ how much less man who is a maggot; and the son of man who is a worm!

³ They have all gone aside. They have together become corrupt. There is no one who does good, no, not one.

⁵ Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity. In sin my mother conceived me.

⁹ Who can say, "I have made my heart pure. I am clean and without sin?"

²⁰ Surely there is not a righteous man on earth, who does good and doesn't sin.

²⁹ Look! This alone I found: God made mankind upright, but they have devised many schemes."

⁶ Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,

⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

²⁸ A corrupt witness mocks justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down iniquity.

²⁸ And since they did not see fit to retain the knowledge of God, God gave them over to a base mind, to do what ought not to be done. ²⁹ They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and hatred. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, ³⁰ slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent new forms of evil; they disobey their parents.

⁹ What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin. ¹⁰ As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; ¹¹ there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. ¹² All have turned away; they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. ¹³ Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit; the venom of vipers is on their lips; ¹⁴ Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. ¹⁵ "Their feet are swift to shed blood. ¹⁶ ruin and misery [are] in their ways, ¹⁷ and the way of peace they do not know." ¹⁸ "There is no fear of God before their eyes." ¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the Law says, it says to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

¹¹ "Terrors startle him on every side and chase him at his heels.

⁵ "The success of the wicked is brief and the joy of the godless lasts but a moment. ⁶ "Though his pride reaches to the heavens and his head touches the clouds, ⁷ he will perish forever like his own dung. Those who have seen him will say: Where is he?

²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress will overtake him. ⁷ though the wicked spring up as the grass, and all the evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

²⁶ I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you, ²⁷ when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come on you.

²¹ On the appointed day, Herod donned his royal robes, sat on his throne, and addressed the people. ²² The people kept shouting, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man!" ²³ Immediately, because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

¹⁰ And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.

³ While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

¹¹ They have as king over them the angel of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he has the name Apollyon.

³³ While he was still talking with them, look, the messenger came down to him. Then he said, "Look, this disaster is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?"

¹¹ "What strength do I have, that I should wait and hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?

¹⁶ If I summon him, and he should answer me, I do not believe that he will listen to my voice—

²⁹ be afraid for yourselves because of the sword, for wrath brings punishment by the sword, so that you may know that there is judgment."

¹⁴ "No mater how many his children, their fate is the sword. His offspring will never have enough to eat.

²¹ And they shall pass by it, they shall fall, and be hungry: and when they shall be hungry, they will be angry, and curse their king, and their God, and look upwards. ²² and they will look to the earth; and behold, trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they shall be driven into thick darkness.

⁵ So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

⁹ We fetched our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the desert.

² A day of darkness and gloom, a day of cloud and thick darkness, like the dawn spreads on the mountains, a great and strong army! There has been nothing like it from old, and after it nothing will be again for generations to come.

²⁰ Will not the Day of the LORD be darkness, and not light pitch black at that, without a ray of sunshine?"

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,

²⁷ but only a terrifying prospect of judgment and a raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they were put to death by the sword. They went around in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, oppressed, and mistreated. ³⁸ The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and hid in caves and holes in the ground.

³ I have commanded My holy ones; I have also called My warriors for My anger, those who rejoice in My highness.

³⁷ He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. ³⁸ Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.”

⁹ There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Greek;

² Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD that I should listen to him and let Israel go? I don't know about the LORD, nor will I let Israel go!" ³ Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God so he does not strike us with pestilence or sword.

¹⁷ Do you still exalt yourself against My people, that you will not let them go?

²³ And if over these things you should not be corrected, but should go to me sideways,

⁴ "I am not angry. If only there were briers and thorns confronting me! I would march against them in battle. I would set them all on fire.

⁴ "Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD have done this with the first of them and with the last. I am he!" ⁵ The islands have seen it and fear. The ends of the earth tremble. They approach and come forward. ⁶ Each helps the other and says to his brother: "Be strong!" ⁷ The craftsman encourages the goldsmith. He who smooths with the hammer spurs on him who strikes the anvil. He says of the welding: It is good. He nails down the idol so it will not topple.

²³ You've exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. You've had the vessels from his temple brought into your presence. And you, your officials, and your wives and mistresses drank wine from them. You praised gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which can't see, hear, or demonstrate knowledge. But you didn't honor God, who holds in his power your very life and all your ways.

⁵ “Who are You, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” He replied.

Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand? ¹⁴ Who from all the gods of these nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, which were able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God shall be able to deliver you from my hand? ¹⁵ And now, do not let Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this way, nor believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand, from the hand of my fathers; also, surely your god shall not deliver you from my hand. ¹⁶ Sennacherib's officers said more against the LORD God and his servant Hezekiah. ¹⁷ And he had written letters to blaspheme the LORD, the God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the lands have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah shall not deliver His people from my hand.

¹² »I was at ease, but he shattered me. He has grabbed me by the neck and has shaken me to pieces. He has also set me up as his target.

⁴⁰ You made my enemies turn their backs to me. I destroyed those who hated me.

¹⁵ But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked; you grew fat, thick and sated. And he abandoned God who made him, and fell away from the Rock of his salvation.

¹⁰ "But now, you must come and try again! I will not find one wise man among you.

¹⁰ They close up their callous hearts. With their mouth they speak proudly.

⁷ Their eyes bulge with fat, their minds pass the limits of conceit.

³¹ The wrath of God came on them, and put to death the fattest of them, and put an end to the young men of Israel.

¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes, lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn, and be healed.

²⁸ and have grown fat and sleek. There is no limit to their evil deeds. They don't argue the case of the orphan to secure justice. They don't defend the rights of the poor.

¹⁴ "I would be with kings and counselors of the earth, who built for themselves places now lying in ruins.

¹⁵ "Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling.

⁸ Woe to those who join house to house, who lay field to field, till there is no room, and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land! ⁹ the LORD Almighty swore in my ears, Truly many houses shall be deserted, big and fair, without inhabitant. ¹⁰ "A ten-acre vineyard will produce only six gallons of wine, and two quarts of seed will produce only four quarts of grain."

¹¹ "I'll make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a refuge for jackals. I'll make the towns of Judah desolate, without inhabitants."

¹⁸ Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the temple mount as the high places of a forest.

³⁷ "Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants.

¹² Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed up like a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble, and the temple Mount like a forest high place."

¹⁸ Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not keep His anger forever, because He delights in mercy.

Is it fit for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned? ⁶ Therefore thus says the Sovereign LORD: Just like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest which I gave to the fire for fuel, so I have given the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁷ I will set my face against them (turn against them). Though they have come out of the fire, yet the fire will consume them. Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.’«

⁴⁷ And say to the forest of the South, Hear the word of the LORD. The Sovereign LORD says thus: Behold, I will kindle a fire in you and it will devour every green tree in you and every dry tree. The flaming flame will not be quenched and all faces from the south to the north will be burnt by it. ⁴⁸ All flesh will see that I, the LORD, have kindled it. It will not be quenched.”'”

¹² But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

¹³ Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him hand and foot and throw him outside into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

⁴¹ Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

⁴³ If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, to the fire that shall never be quenched.

⁴⁵ And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

⁴⁷ And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, ⁴⁸ 'where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.' ⁴⁹ Everyone will be salted with fire.

⁸ Taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ who will be punished with everlasting destruction proceeding from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power,

¹⁷ These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.

¹³ They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.

¹⁵ And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God, the Almighty.

⁸ Just as I have seen, those who plow lawlessness And those who sow misery are harvesting it.

¹⁶ "To him belong strength and victory. Both deceived and deceivers are his.

¹⁰ Do not trust in oppression. Do not become vain in robbery. If riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

⁸ He who sows wickedness reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

¹⁰ For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not remembered the rock of your strength. Therefore you plant pleasant plants, and set out foreign seedlings. ¹¹ On your planting day you make them grow, and in the morning of your sowing you bring them into bloom, yet the harvest will flee in a day of sickness and incurable pain.

²⁰ He feeds on ashes; a deceived mind misleads him. And he cannot save himself, and he cannot say, "Is this not an illusion in my right hand?"

⁴ No one calls for justice and no one pleads his case truthfully. People trust pointless arguments and speak lies. They conceive trouble and give birth to evil.

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they reap the whirlwind. He has no stalk; the bud shall make no flour. If it does make it, strangers will swallow it up.

⁸ Those who cling to vain idols leave behind the gracious love that could have been theirs.

³ If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

⁷ Do not be deceived. God is not mocked! A man will harvest what he sows. ⁸ The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

⁶ Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.

¹⁶ "He is like a well-watered plant in the sunshine, spreading its shoots over the garden. ¹⁷ "It entwines its roots around a pile of rocks and looks for a place among the stones. ¹⁸ "When it is torn from its spot, that place disowns it and says: 'I never saw you.' ¹⁹ »Its life withers away and other plants grow from the soil.

⁷ "At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. ⁸ "Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil, ⁹ yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth growth like a plant.

¹⁶ "His roots dry up below and his branches wither above. ¹⁷ "The memory of him perishes from the earth. He has no name in the street.

¹⁶ "They were snatched away before their time. Their foundation is washed away by flood.

⁵ but God will pull you down forever. He will snatch you and tear you away from your tent, and he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah ⁶ And the righteous will see and fear, and will laugh at him, saying, ⁷ Behold, the man who did not make God his strength; but he trusted in his many riches; he was strong in his destruction. ⁸ But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God. I trust the loyal love of God forever and ever.

²³ But you, O God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

¹⁷ Do not be very wicked, and do not be a fool; why should you die before your time?

¹¹ When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come and make fires with them. For they have no understanding (discernment). Their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.

⁸ "'"It was planted in good soil beside plenty of water so that it could grow branches, bear fruit, and become a wonderful vine."' ⁹ Say, Thus saith the Sovereign LORD: Shall it prosper? Shall he not pull up its roots, and cut off its fruit, that it may wither? All its fresh sprouting leaves shall wither, even without a great arm and many people to pluck it up by its roots. ¹⁰ "‘"Though it is transplanted, will it thrive? Will it not completely wither as soon as the east wind strikes it, wither on the beds where it grew?"’"

¹⁶ Ephraim is blighted; its roots shriveled. It can bear no fruit. Even if they bear children, I will kill their cherished offspring.

⁵ I will be like the dew to Israel. He will blossom like the lily, and send down his roots like Lebanon. ⁶ "His shoots will sprout and his beauty will be like the olive tree. His fragrance will be like the cedars of Lebanon. ⁷ Men will dwell in his shade. They will revive like the grain, and blossom like the vine. Their fragrance will be like the wine of Lebanon.

⁶ If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned.

³⁹ You will plant vineyards and dress them, but you will neither drink of the wine, nor harvest, because worms will eat them. ⁴⁰ You will have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you won't anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off.

⁹ The land dries up and wastes away. Lebanon is ashamed and withers. Sharon is like a desert plain. Bashan and Carmel drop their leaves.

¹³ And the stars in the sky fell to earth, like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when shaken by a strong wind.

³ And his sons did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

³ Here I am. Witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Of whose hand have I taken a bribe to make me blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.”

¹³ "Such is the destiny of all who forget God. The hope of the godless will perish.

²² "Your enemies will be clothed in shame. The tents of the wicked will be no more."

¹⁴ if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent,

¹ Then Zophar the Naamathite answered,

⁵ "Is not your wickedness great? There is no end to your iniquities. ⁶ For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked. ⁷ You've neglected to give water to the weary, and you've withhold food from the hungry. ⁸ "The powerful possess the land, and the favored live in it. ⁹ "You have sent widows away empty-handed. You crush the arms of the orphans.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

¹² For I delivered the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of the perishing came on me; and I made the widow's heart to sing. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a turban. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. ¹⁶ "I was a father to the needy! I championed the cause of the stranger. ¹⁷ I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.

¹³ "The godless in heart harbor resentment. Even when he fetters them, they do not cry for help.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are terrified. The godless tremble. Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with long lasting fire? ¹⁵ He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as you trample on the poor, and take taxes of wheat from him- therefore you who have built houses of cut stone will not dwell in them. You who have planted pleasant vineyards shall not drink their wine. ¹² For I know how many are your offences, and how great are your sins-- you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn aside the needy in the courts.

² The pious has perished from the earth, and the upright is not among mankind. All of them lie in wait for blood; each one hunts his brother with a net.

⁵¹ and he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹⁴ But the wicked one travails with evil, he conceives malice and gives birth to lies.

⁴ No one calls for justice and no one pleads his case truthfully. People trust pointless arguments and speak lies. They conceive trouble and give birth to evil. ⁵ They hatch viper eggs and weave spider webs. Those who eat their eggs will die. When an egg is crushed, a poisonous snake is hatched.

¹³ You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice, you have eaten the fruit of lies, because you have trusted in your strength, in the multitude of your warriors.

¹⁵ Then when passion has conceived it gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is full grown, gives birth to death.
