¹¹ Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers! The LORD has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes he has decided to destroy Babylon. Indeed, it's the LORD's vengeance, vengeance for his temple.

¹⁴ The LORD raised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite. He was of the royal line in Edom.

²³ God also raised up against him an adversary, Razon, the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, Adarezer, the king of Soba.

²⁶ So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria), who took the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara and the river of Gozan, where they are to this day.

²² In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia. He sent a proclamation throughout his kingdom, and also put it in writing. He said:

¹ In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, to fulfil the word of the LORD from the mouth of Jeremiah, the LORD aroused the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia, and he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, moreover also in writing, saying:

³ Lift your steps to the perpetual ruins, to all that the enemy has ruined in the sanctuary. ⁴ Your enemies roar in the midst of your congregations; they set up their banners for signs. ⁵ They behaved like men wielding axes, cutting through a thicket of trees. ⁶ They strike down all its carved work with hatchet and hammers. ⁷ They have burned your sanctuary to the ground. They have profaned the dwelling place of your Name. ⁸ They said in their hearts: "We will destroy them completely. They burned up all the synagogues of God in the land." ⁹ We see no miraculous signs. There is no longer any prophet. There is no one who knows how long. ¹⁰ How long, O God, shall the enemy reproach? Shall the enemy provoke Your name forever? ¹¹ Why do you draw back your hand, even your right hand? Take it out of your pocket and consume them.

³ They conspire with cunning against your people. They plot against your cherished ones. ⁴ “Come,” they say, “let’s destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.” ⁵ Indeed, they shrewdly planned together, forming an alliance against you ⁶ the tents of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarites; ⁷ Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the dwellers of Tyre;" ⁸ Even Assyria joined them to strengthen the descendants of Lot. [Interlude] ⁹ Do to them as you did to Midian, as you did to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon

²⁶ "the LORD Almighty will stir up enemies against you as when he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb. His wrath will come by way of the sea, as he did in Egypt.

¹⁷ Behold, I will stir up against them the Medes; who will not regard silver, and who will not delight in gold. ¹⁸ "And their bows will mow down the young men. They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb. Nor will they have compassion on children.

² A harsh vision is revealed to me; the deceiver deceives, and the plunderer plunders. Go up, O Elam; besiege, O Media! I have caused all her sighing to cease.

⁵ They set the table, they spread out the cloth, they eat, they drink; Rise up, captains, oil the shields,

²⁵ "I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes! One from the rising sun calls on my name. He treads on rulers as if they were mortar, as if he were a potter treading the clay.

¹ Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut:

⁵ I am the LORD, and there is no other. Besides me, there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not known me;

¹¹ I summon a bird of prey from the east. I summon a man to fulfill my purpose from a far off land. What I have said I will bring about. What I have determined (purposed) I will do.

⁴ Harness the horses and mount the steeds! And take your stand with helmets! Polish the spears! Put on the body armor!

⁹ Horses, get up! Chariots, drive furiously! Let the warriors go forward, Ethiopia and Put who carry shields, and the Lydians who handle and bend the bow.

⁹ Indeed, I'm going to stir up and bring against Babylon a great company of nations from the land of the north. They'll deploy for battle against her, and from there she will be captured. Their arrows will be like a skilled warrior; they won't miss their targets.

¹⁴ Deploy the troops all around Babylon. All who bend the bow, shoot at her and spare no arrows, for she has sinned against the LORD. ¹⁵ Shout against her all around: she has submitted herself; her towers are fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance on her; as she has done, do to her.

²⁵ the LORD will open his armory and bring out the weapons of his fury, because the LORD Almighty has a job to do in the land of the Babylonians.

²⁸ Fugitives and refugees from Babylon are coming to Zion to tell about the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance for his temple. ²⁹ "Summon many to Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Camp all around her, let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds. Do to her just as she has done. For she has behaved arrogantly against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel.

⁴⁵ Listen to what the LORD is going to do against Babylon and the things he intends to do to the land of the Babylonians. He will surely drag away the little ones of the flock. He will surely destroy the pasture because of the Babylonians.

¹² Set up the banner on the walls of Babylon; make the watch strong; set up the watchmen; prepare the ambushes. For the LORD has both planned and done that which He spoke against the people of Babylon.

²⁴ "Before your eyes I'll repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all the evil that they did in Zion," declares the LORD.

²⁷ Set ye up a standard in the land. Blow the trumpet among the nations. Prepare the nations against her. Call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a marshal against her. Cause the horses to come u ²⁸ Prepare the nations for holy war against her, the kings of the Medes, with their governors and all their officials, and every land of their dominion. ²⁹ The land quakes and writhes because the LORD's purposes against Babylon stand firm, to make the land of Babylon a waste without inhabitants.

³⁵ May the violence done to me and my flesh be on Babylon," says the inhabitant of Zion. "May my blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea," says Jerusalem.

¹⁷ Indeed, the violence done to Lebanon will overtake you, and the destruction of the beasts will terrorize you because you shed human blood and did violence to the land, to the city, and to all who live in it. ¹⁸ What does an image profit, for its maker has carved it; a molten image, and a teacher of lies? For does the maker trust in his work on it, to make dumb idols? ¹⁹ Woe to him who says to the wood, 'Wake up!' And to a lifeless stone, 'Arise!' Can he teach? Look, it is covered with gold and silver, and there is no breath within it. ²⁰ But the LORD is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him."

² "Look, I will make Jerusalem a cup of reeling to all the surrounding peoples, and on Judah also will it be in the siege against Jerusalem. ³ And in that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it shall be slashed. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it.

² I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem, to lay siege against it. The city will be captured, the houses will be ransacked, the women raped, and half of the city will go into exile, but the remaining people will not be cut off from the city.

¹² And this will be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the peoples that fight against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they are standing on their feet; their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.

¹⁶ The ten horns and the beast you saw will hate the prostitute. They will leave her abandoned and naked. They will eat her flesh and burn her up with fire, ¹⁷ For God has put in their hearts to accomplish his purpose, by agreeing to give their sovereignty to the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
