¹⁰ The ruined city lies desolate. The entrance to every house is barred and none may enter.

⁹ Therefore its name was called Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth, and there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

⁴ The city was breached, and the entire army left during the night through the gate that stood between the two walls beside the royal garden, even though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city. They escaped by way of the Arabah,

⁹ set fire to the LORD's temple, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem. He even set fire to the lavish homes. ¹⁰ The army of the Chaldaeans under the command of the captain of the army broke down the walls around Jerusalem.

¹ Wail, O ships of Tarshish! For Tyre is destroyed and left without house or harbor. From the land of Cyprus (Kittim) word has come to them.

¹² The city is left in ruins; its gate is battered to pieces.

² You have made the city a heap, the mighty city a ruin. The palace of aliens is a city no more. It will never be rebuilt.

¹⁰ The fortified city stands desolate, abandoned settlements, forsaken like the desert. There the calves will graze, there they lie down; they strip its branches bare.

¹⁴ For the palace will be forsaken, the crowded city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become a cave forever, the joy of wild asses, a pasture for flocks.

¹¹ but the pelican and the porcupine will possess it, the owl and the raven will dwell in it. He will stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness.

¹³ Thorns will come up in its palaces, nettles and thistles in its fortresses; and it will be a habitation of jackals, a court for ostriches. ¹⁴ And the wildcats will meet with the hyenas, and the wild goat will cry to his fellow. There too, nocturnal animals shall settle, and shall find themselves a place of rest. ¹⁵ The snake shall nest there, and shall lay, and hatch, and shall gather in her shadow. Vultures shall also be gathered together, each with its mate.

²⁵ "Look, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I'll punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh: ²⁶ Egypt, Judah, Edom, the people of Ammon, Moab, all those who live in the desert and shave the corners of their beard; indeed all the other nations that are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel that is uncircumcised of heart."

⁴ When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled and went out of the city at night by way of the king's garden through the gate between the two walls. Then he went out on the road toward the Arabah.

⁸ The Babylonians burned down the royal palace and the houses of the people and tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

⁷ The wall of the city was broken through, and all the soldiers fled, leaving the city at night by way of the gate between the two walls next to the king's garden, even though the Chaldeans were all around the city. They went in the direction of the Arabah.

¹³ He burned down the LORD’s Temple, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem. Every important building was burned down. ¹⁴ The entire Babylonian army that was with the captain of the guard tore down the walls around Jerusalem.

¹³ He who breaks open the way goes up before them. They break through the gate, and go out. And their king passes on before them, with the LORD at their head.

¹² Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed up like a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble, and the temple Mount like a forest high place."

³⁴ Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute in town after town. ³⁵ And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

⁴³ For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, and surround you and hem you in on every side,

²⁴ They will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

⁷ When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them. ⁸ Their corpses will lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

⁵ And on her forehead a name was written, "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH." ⁶ I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God's people, and the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her I was perfectly amazed,

² And he called out with a mighty voice, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place of demons, a haunt of every unclean spirit, a haunt of every unclean and hateful bird.
