¹ The word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² Son of man, speak to the sons of thy people, and say to them, When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman, ³ if he see the sword coming upon the land, and blow the trumpet, and warn the people; ⁴ and he who heareth the trumpet doth not take warning; and the sword cometh and cutteth him off; his blood shall be on his own head. ⁵ He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn't take warning; his blood shall be on him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul. ⁶ "'But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and does not blow his horn to warn the people and the enemy comes and kills someone, that watchman must die because of his sin. I will hold him responsible for their deaths.' ⁷ "So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. ⁸ When I say to the wicked man, O wicked man, you will surely die and you do not speak to warn the wicked man from his way, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand. ⁹ "But if you warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life. ¹⁰ "You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: 'Thus you speak, saying, "Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them; how then can we live?"' ¹¹ Say to them: '"As I am alive!" Declares the Sovereign LORD. "I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked. Only that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back! Turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?"' ¹² "So you, son of man, say to your people that the righteousness of the righteous shall not save him in the day of his transgression, and the wickedness of the wicked will not cause him to stumble on the day of his returning from his wickedness; and the righteous will not be able to live by it on the day when he returns to his sin. ¹³ When I tell the righteous that he will surely live; if he trusts in his righteousness, and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but he will die in his iniquity that he has committed. ¹⁴ Again, when I say to the wicked man, You will surely die, if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right, ¹⁵ if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he will surely live. He will not die. ¹⁶ None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done what is lawful and right; he will surely live. ¹⁷ "Yet your people say, 'The way of the Lord is not fair!' yet their way is not fair. ¹⁸ When the righteous man turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die in it. ¹⁹ And when the wicked man turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he will live by it. ²⁰ Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not fair. O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways. ²¹ In the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, one who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, “The city has been defeated!” ²² Now the hand of the the LORD had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and He had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened, and I was no longer dumb. ²³ Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ²⁴ "Son of man, the inhabitants of these ruins on the soil of Israel are saying, 'Abraham was one man, and he took possession of the land, and we are many; the land has been given for us as a possession.' ²⁵ Therefore say to them, The Sovereign LORD says thus: You eat with the blood and lift up your eyes to your idols and shed blood. And will you possess the land? ²⁶ You rely on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbour's wife. Shall you possess the land? ²⁷ Thus you will say to them. The Sovereign LORD says thus: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places will fall by the sword and he who is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves will die of the pestilence. ²⁸ And I will make the land a desolation and a wasteland, and the pride of its strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will be desolate with no one traveling through them." ' ²⁹ And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land desolate and a waste because of all their abominations which they have done. ³⁰ "Son of man, your people are talking about you by the walls and in the doorways of their homes. They are saying to each other: 'Let's go and hear the word that has come from the LORD.' ³¹ And they come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words. But they will not do them. For with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their unjust gain. ³² And, behold, you are to them as a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice, and playing well on an instrument. For they hear your words, but they are not doing them. ³³ “When this comes to pass—behold, it comes—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

²⁵ I will bring the sword on you avenging the vengeance of the covenant. When you will be gathered into your cities then I will send the plague into your midst, and you will be given into the hand of the enemy.

²⁴ David was sitting between the two gates. The watchman walked along the roof of the gate by the wall. He looked at the man running alone. ²⁵ The watchman cried, and told the king. The king said, "If he is alone, there is good news in his mouth." He came closer and closer. ²⁶ The watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper, and said, "Look, a man running alone." And the king said, "He also brings good news." ²⁷ The watchman said: "It appears the first one runs like Ahimaaz, Zadok's son. He's a good man," the king said. "He must be coming with good news."

¹⁷ The watchman on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu and his company coming. He said: "I see a company of people." Joram said: "Send out a horseman to them and let him ask: 'Do you come in peace?'" ¹⁸ So a horseman went out, greeted Jehu and said, "This is what the king said: 'Have you come in peace?'" But Jehu responded, "What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me." The watchman reported, "The messenger arrived there, but he hasn't returned." ¹⁹ Then Joram sent out a second horseman, who went out to them and said, "This is what the king said: 'Have you come in peace?'" Jehu responded, "What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me." ²⁰ The watchman said, He came to them, and isn't coming back. The driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he drives angrily.

⁶ For this is what the LORD says to me: "Go, station the lookout, and let him report what he sees. ⁷ When he sees chariots, horsemen in pairs, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, let him listen diligently, very diligently." ⁸ Then the lookout shouted: "Lord, I stand continually on the watchtower in the daytime, and every night I stay at my post. ⁹ "Look! Here come chariots and horsemen in pairs. Then he said: 'Babylon has fallen! She has fallen! All the idols they worship lie shattered on the ground.'"

⁹ Come, all you beasts of the field, come and devour, all you beasts of the forest! ¹⁰ Israel's watchmen are blind. They all lack knowledge they are all mute dogs. They cannot bark. They just lie around and dream, they love to sleep.

⁶ I have set watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem. They will never be silent day nor night. You who call on the LORD, take no rest,

¹² On all the barren heights in the desert destroyers will come. Indeed, a sword of the LORD will devour from one end of the land to the other. There will be no peace for any person.

² "When they say to you, 'Where can we go?', say to them, 'This is what the LORD says: "Those destined for death, to death will go; those destined for the sword, to the sword will go; and those destined for captivity, to captivity will go. ³ And I will set over them four kinds, says the LORD: the sword to kill, and the dogs to drag off, and the birds of the heaven and the beast of the earth to devour and destroy.

³¹ "'The sound is echoing to the ends of the earth because the LORD has brought charges against the nations. He will judge all humans. He will kill the wicked,' declares the LORD.

⁶ O you sword of the LORD, how long will you be quiet? Put up yourself into your scabbard. Rest and be still. ⁷ How can it be quiet, since the LORD has given it a command? He has set it there against Ashkelon, and against the seashore.

¹² Set up the banner on the walls of Babylon; make the watch strong; set up the watchmen; prepare the ambushes. For the LORD has both planned and done that which He spoke against the people of Babylon.

¹¹ Go to them of the captivity, to the children of your people, and speak to them, and tell them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says,' whether they will hear, or whether they will refuse.

²⁷ But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall tell them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says.' He who hears, let him hear; and he who refuses, let him refuse; for they are a rebellious house.”

³ and say, You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign LORD: Thus says the Sovereign LORD to the mountains and to the hills, to the rivers and to the valleys: Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword on you, and I will destroy your high places.

⁸ The sword you have feared, and the sword I will bring against you!" declares the Sovereign LORD.

¹⁷ Or if I bring a sword on that land and say, Let a sword go through the land, and I will cut off man and beast from it;

²¹ '"This is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'I will surely send four terrible punishments against Jerusalem. I will send wars, famines, wild animals, and plagues. They will destroy people and animals.

⁹ "Son of man, prophecy and say, 'this is what the LORD says: "A sword, a sword is sharpened and also polished! ¹⁰ '"'It is sharpened to make a slaughter and polished to flash like lightning! Shall we rejoice in the rod of my son despising every tree?'"'" ¹¹ '"The sword was given to be polished, that it might be handled. The sword is sharpened and polished, to give it into the hand of the slayer. ¹² Cry and wail, son of man, for it is against my people; it is against all of the princes of Israel. They are thrown to the sword with my people; therefore strike your thigh. ¹³ '"For there is testing. And what if even the rod that despises will be no more?" Declares the Sovereign LORD. ¹⁴ You therefore, son of man, prophesy, and strike your hands together, and let the sword strike twice, even the third time, the sword of the slain: it is the sword of the great men that are slain, which enters into their private chambers. ¹⁵ so that a heart melts, and the fallen multiply at all of their gates. I gave a sword for slaughter, and alas! It is made for flashing, it is grasped for slaughtering. ¹⁶ Be pointed to the right, to the left, wherever your edge is ordered.

⁷ "So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.

¹² "So you, son of man, say to your people that the righteousness of the righteous shall not save him in the day of his transgression, and the wickedness of the wicked will not cause him to stumble on the day of his returning from his wickedness; and the righteous will not be able to live by it on the day when he returns to his sin.

¹⁷ "Yet your people say, 'The way of the Lord is not fair!' yet their way is not fair.

³⁰ "Son of man, your people are talking about you by the walls and in the doorways of their homes. They are saying to each other: 'Let's go and hear the word that has come from the LORD.'

¹⁸ 'Tell us what you mean by this.'

⁸ The prophet keeps watch over Ephraim for my God; the snare of a fowler is on all his ways, and hostility in the house of his God.

⁷ “Awake, sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is close to me,” says the LORD of Armies. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

¹⁸ Each of the builders had his sword tied to his side while building. And the man who sounded the trumpet was beside me.

²⁰ Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us."

¹ “Cry aloud! Don’t spare! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Declare to my people their disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins.

⁵ Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say, Blow the trumpet in the land. Cry aloud and say, Assemble yourselves and let us go into the fortified cities.

¹ “Flee for safety, you children of Benjamin, out of the middle of Jerusalem! Blow the trumpet in Tekoa and raise up a signal on Beth Haccherem, for evil looks out from the north with a great destruction.

²⁷ Set ye up a standard in the land. Blow the trumpet among the nations. Prepare the nations against her. Call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a marshal against her. Cause the horses to come u

⁸ When I say to the wicked man, O wicked man, you will surely die and you do not speak to warn the wicked man from his way, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand. ⁹ "But if you warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life.

¹ Put to your lips the trumpet like a vulture over the house of the LORD, because they have broken my covenant and rebelled against my law.

¹ Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming —it is indeed near.

⁹ For he who curses his father or his mother will surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother; his blood will be upon him.

¹¹ And the man who lies with his father's wife has uncovered his father's nakedness. Both of them will surely be put to death, their blood will be upon them. ¹² "'If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have committed a perversion; their blood shall be upon them. ¹³ And a man who lies with a male as one lies with a woman, both of them have done a detestable thing; they shall certainly be put to death; their blood shall be on them. ¹⁴ And if a man take a woman and her mother, it is incest: in fire shall they burn him and them; that there be no incest among you. ¹⁵ " 'As for a man who has sexual relations with an animal, he shall surely be put to death, and you must kill the animal. ¹⁶ "'If a woman approaches any animal, and lies down with it, you shall kill the woman, and the animal: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. ¹⁷ And if a man takes his sister, daughter of his father or his mother, and has sex relations with her and she with him, it is an act of shame: they are to be cut off before the children of their people; he has had sex relations with his sister, and his sin will be on him. ¹⁸ "'If a man lies with a woman having her monthly period, and uncovers her nakedness; he has made naked her fountain, and she has uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people. ¹⁹ And you may not have sex connection with your mother's sister or your father's sister, for they are his near relations: their sin will be on them. ²⁰ If a man lies with his aunt, he has uncovered the nakedness of his uncle; they shall bear their sin; they shall die childless. ²¹ "'If a man takes his brother's wife, it is an impurity: he has uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless. ²² Guard all my statutes and all my judgments and work them: that the land where I bring you to settle not vomit you. ²³ You must not walk in the customs of the nations which I drive out from before you. Because they did all these things, therefore I held them in abhorrence, ²⁴ But I have said to you, You shall surely possess their land; and, I, I am giving it to you to possess it, a land flowing with milk and honey; I am the LORD your God, who has set you apart from the nations. ²⁵ And you shall distinguish between the clean and the unclean animal and between the unclean and the clean bird; and you shall not defile yourselves with the animal or with the bird or with anything that moves along the ground that I have set apart for you as unclean. ²⁶ and you shall be holy to Me, for I, the LORD, am holy; and I have set you apart from the nations to become Mine. ²⁷ “'A man or a woman that is a medium or is a wizard shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones. Their blood shall be upon themselves.'”

¹⁶ David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you by saying, 'I killed the LORD's anointed one!'"

³⁷ If you ever leave and cross the Kidron Brook, you can be sure that you'll die. You'll be responsible for your own death."

¹⁶ And it happened that while he was speaking to him, he said to him, "Have we appointed you as a counselor to the king? Stop—why should you be killed?" So the prophet stopped and said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my advice."

¹ He that is stiff necked and will not be reformed, shall suddenly be destroyed without any help.

¹⁷ "'I set watchmen over you. I said: 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But they said: 'We will not listen!'"

²⁰ that you have made a fatal mistake, for you sent me to the LORD your God, saying, 'Pray for us to the LORD our God, and all that the LORD our God says, so tell us and we will do it.' ²¹ I've told you today, but you haven't obeyed the LORD your God in all that he sent me to tell you. ²² Now, be fully aware that you will die by the sword, by famine, and by plague in the place where you want to settle."

¹³ That giveth upon usury, and that taketh an increase: shall such a one live? he shall not live. Seeing he hath done all these detestable things, he shall surely die, his blood shall be upon him.

⁵ He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn't take warning; his blood shall be on him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul.

⁹ "But if you warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life.

² the LORD was very angry with your fathers. ³ Therefore tell them: Thus says the LORD of hosts: 'Return to me,' says the LORD of hosts, 'and I will return to you,' says the LORD of hosts. ⁴ "Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Return from your evil ways and your evil deeds!" ' But they did not hear and they did not pay attention to me," declares the LORD.

⁶ But when they began to oppose him and insult him, he shook out his clothes in protest and told them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the gentiles."

²⁶ Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.

²² Obey the message; do not merely listen to it, and deceive yourselves.

¹⁹ Now therefore command that all of your livestock and all that you have in the field be brought into shelter. The hail will come down on every man and animal that is found in the field, and isn't brought home, and they will die.”'” ²⁰ Of the servants of Pharaoh, the one who feared the word of the LORD made his slaves and his livestock flee to the houses. ²¹ and he that did not regard the word of the LORD left his slaves and his livestock in the field.

¹⁰ So the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God said to him and warned him, so he was on guard there continually.

⁷ for he is our Elohim and we are the people of his pasture - the flock of his hand. Today if you hear his voice,

² "Look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one. I blessed him and made him many."

³⁹ "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you are indeed Abraham's children," said Jesus "do the deeds of Abraham.

³⁷ When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” ³⁸ Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call to himself." ⁴⁰ With many other words he bore witness and exhorted them, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation." ⁴¹ Those who embraced his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to the believers that day.

¹ We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. ² For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every transgression and disobedience received its just punishment, ³ how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,

⁷ By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

⁵ "I will require your lifeblood as an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. I will demand an accounting from each man for the life of his fellow man.

²² Reuben said: "Did I not tell you? Did I say, 'Do not sin against the boy'? You would not listen! Now comes the reckoning for his blood."

¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house on his bed, should I not now require his blood from your hand, and rid the earth of you?”

³² The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge.

¹⁰ Israel's watchmen are blind. They all lack knowledge they are all mute dogs. They cannot bark. They just lie around and dream, they love to sleep. ¹¹ They are dogs with mighty appetites. They never have enough! They are shepherds who lack understanding. They all turn to their own way and each one seeks dishonest (unjust) gain.

¹⁸ "When I tell a wicked man that he will surely die, but you do not warn him or speak out so that he can change his wicked way in order to save his life; that wicked man will die because of his sin. I will hold you responsible for his death. ¹⁹ Yet if you warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul. ²⁰ And when the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, and I lay a stumbling-block before him, he shall die. Since you have not warned him, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered. But I will require his blood at your hand.

²⁰ The soul that sins, it will die. The son will not bear the iniquity of the father, nor will the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of a righteous man will be upon him and the wickedness of a wicked man will be upon him.

²⁴ But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits unrighteousness and does according to all the abominations that a wicked man does, will he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done will be remembered. In his trespass that he has trespassed and in his sin that he has sinned, in them he will die.

¹⁰ 'Thus says the Sovereign LORD: "Look! I am against the shepherds, and I will seek my flock from their hand, and I will put an end to them from shepherding flocks, and the shepherds will no longer feed themselves, and I will deliver my flocks from their mouth, so that they will not be as food for them."

²¹ Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” ²² So the Jews said, "Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" ²³ Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. ²⁴ I told you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.

¹⁴ And Micaiah said, "As surely as the LORD liveth, what the LORD putteth in my mouth, that will I speak."

¹⁶ And the king said to him, How many times shall I make you swear that you speak to me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD? ¹⁷ Micaiah answered: "I can see the army of Israel scattered over the hills like sheep without a shepherd." the LORD said: "These men have no leader. Let them go home in peace." ¹⁸ Then the king of Israel told Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he wouldn't prophesy anything good about me, but only evil?" ¹⁹ Micaiah said, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD. I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. ²⁰ the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth Gilead?' One said one thing; and another said another. ²¹ A spirit came out and stood before the LORD, and said, 'I will entice him.' ²² The LORD said to him, 'How?' He said, 'I will go out and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' He said, 'You will entice him, and will also prevail. Go out and do so.' ²³ And now, behold, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets, and the LORD has spoken evil concerning you. ²⁴ Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah came near and slapped Micaiah on the cheek and said, "When did the Spirit of the LORD pass from me to speak with you?" ²⁵ Micaiah replied, "You'll see how when the day comes that you run away to hide yourself in a closet!" ²⁶ The king of Israel said: "Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon, the ruler of the town, and to Joash, the king's son. ²⁷ and say: Thus saith the king: Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with scant bread and with scant water, until I come in peace.' ²⁸ Micaiah said, "If you return at all in peace, the LORD has not spoken by me." He said, "Listen, all you people."

¹⁰ And whatever cause shall come to you from your brothers that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, you shall even warn them so that they do not sin against the LORD, and wrath come on you and your brothers. Do this and you shall not sin.

³ The watchmen going about the city found me. I said, Have you seen Him whom my soul loves?

⁷ Then found me the watchmen that walked about the city; they smote me, they wounded me: they took away my vail from me, they that watched the walls.

¹⁷ But you, you must gird your loins, and stand, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be afraid of them, or I will shatter you before them.

²⁷ "I have made you a tester of metals and a fortress among my people; that you may know and try their way."

²⁸ Let the prophet who has a dream relate the dream, but let whoever receives my word speak my word truthfully. What does straw have in common with wheat?" declares the LORD.

² “the LORD says: 'Stand in the court of the LORD's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD's house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Don't omit a word.

⁶ For there will be a day when the watchmen will call out on the hills of Ephraim, 'Arise, let's go up to Zion to the LORD our God.'"

⁷ And you must speak my words to them whether they listen or whether they fail to listen, for they are rebellious. ⁸ But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. Do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and eat what I give you.

¹⁷ Son of man, I have made you a watchman to the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. ¹⁸ "When I tell a wicked man that he will surely die, but you do not warn him or speak out so that he can change his wicked way in order to save his life; that wicked man will die because of his sin. I will hold you responsible for his death. ¹⁹ Yet if you warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul. ²⁰ And when the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, and I lay a stumbling-block before him, he shall die. Since you have not warned him, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered. But I will require his blood at your hand. ²¹ Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man, that the righteous not sin, and he does not sin, he will surely live, because he took warning; and you have delivered your soul.”

⁴ The best of them is like a brier. The most upright is worse than a thorn hedge. The day of your watchmen, even your visitation, has come; now is the time of their confusion.

²⁰ “Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people the full message of this new life.”

²⁰ You know how I did not hesitate to declare to you anything that was helpful, and taught you in public, and from house to house,

²⁶ Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. ²⁷ For I did not hesitate to declare to you the whole counsel of God.

²³ For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread,

³ For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

¹¹ And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,

²⁸ We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. ²⁹ To this end I labor, striving with all His energy working powerfully within me.

¹ Now then, brothers, you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, as in fact you are doing. We ask and encourage you in the Lord to do so even more. ² For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

¹⁷ Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.

¹⁷ "But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. When you eat of it you will surely die."

⁴ "You will not die," the serpent said to the woman.

³ "Our father died in the desert. He was not a part of Korah's followers who joined forces against the LORD. He died for his own sin and left no sons.

²¹ Be sure of this: the wicked will not go unpunished, but the descendants of the righteous will go free.

¹³ but not good with the wicked: he prolongs not his days as a shadow; because he awes not at the face of Elohim.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him.

¹¹ They have treated my people's wound superficially, telling them, 'Peace, peace, when there is no peace.' ¹² Were they ashamed when they had done hateful things? They were not even at all ashamed, nor did they know how to blush. So they shall fall among those who fall. In the time of their punishment they will stumble, says the LORD. ¹³ "I will take away their harvest," declares the LORD. "There are no grapes on the vine, and there are no figs on the fig tree, and the leaves wither, and what I gave to them passed over them." '"

¹³ I said: "Alas, O Sovereign LORD, prophets are telling them: 'You will not see wars or famines, for I will give you lasting peace in this place." ¹⁴ Then the LORD told me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I didn't send them, I didn't command them, and I didn't speak to them. They're proclaiming to you false visions, worthless predictions, and the delusions of their own minds. ¹⁵ Therefore the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn't send them, yet they say, 'Sword and famine will not be in this land.' Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine. ¹⁶ The people to whom they have prophesied will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. There will be no one to bury them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters. I'll pour out on them the judgment they deserve.'"

⁹ “My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who utter lying divinations. They will not be in the council of my people, neither will they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither will they enter into the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.” ¹⁰ Because, yes, because they led my people astray, saying 'Peace!' And there is not peace. And when anyone builds a flimsy wall, look, they coat it with whitewash.

⁴ Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine. The soul who sins, he shall die.

¹⁰ "And now he has a son, a violent one, who sheds blood and does any of these things ¹¹ or who does not do any of those things, but even has eaten at the mountain shrines, and defiled his neighbor's wife, ¹² '"He oppresses the poor and needy. He robs. He does not return the security for a loan. He looks to idols for help. He does disgusting things. ¹³ That giveth upon usury, and that taketh an increase: shall such a one live? he shall not live. Seeing he hath done all these detestable things, he shall surely die, his blood shall be upon him.

¹⁸ ‘»As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was not good among his people, he will die for his iniquity.

⁶ "'But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and does not blow his horn to warn the people and the enemy comes and kills someone, that watchman must die because of his sin. I will hold him responsible for their deaths.'

¹⁴ Again, when I say to the wicked man, You will surely die, if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right,

¹⁰ Severe discipline belongs to him who forsakes the way; he who hates a rebuke will die.

¹⁹ Yet if you warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.

²¹ Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man, that the righteous not sin, and he does not sin, he will surely live, because he took warning; and you have delivered your soul.”

⁴⁷ That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows.

²⁴ I told you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.

⁴⁰ Beware that what the prophets said does not happen to you.

⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. But since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.

⁵ When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. ⁶ But when they began to oppose him and insult him, he shook out his clothes in protest and told them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the gentiles."

²³ So they fixed a day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying, and from morning till night he explained to them the Kingdom of God and gave his testimony, trying to convince them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and the Prophets. ²⁴ Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe. ²⁵ When they disagreed among themselves, they began to leave, after Paul had made one final statement: "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: ²⁶ ‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.” ²⁷ For this people’s heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.’ ²⁸ Therefore be it known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!”

¹⁵ For we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. ¹⁶ To the one we are the aroma of death to death; and to the other the aroma of life to life. And who is equal to such a calling? ¹⁷ For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as men sent from God.

¹⁹ The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; ²⁰ Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, strife, jealousy, fits of rage, selfishness, dissensions, factions, ²¹ and envy; drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

⁷ Do not be deceived. God is not mocked! A man will harvest what he sows. ⁸ The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

³ But among you, as is proper among the saints, there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality or impurity or greed. ⁴ Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking, which are out of character, but rather thanksgiving. ⁵ For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. ⁶ Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.

¹⁸ For as I have often told you before, and now declare even with tears: Many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. ¹⁹ Their destiny is destruction, their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame. Their minds are set on worldly things.

³ For it is God’s will that you should be dedicated to Him, [that is], you should avoid sexual immorality. ⁴ that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, ⁵ not in the passion of lust like the heathen, who do not know God; ⁶ that no one trespass and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such behavior, as, indeed, we have already told you and warned you. ⁷ For God did not call us to be impure, but to be holy. ⁸ Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

¹⁴ And we urge you, brethren, admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

³ how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,

²⁵ See to it that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?

³⁹ "'Those who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins and the sins of their ancestors.

⁷ O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption

¹⁴ But Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me."

²⁰ Your sons have fainted. They lie at the head of every street. They are like antelope caught in a net. They are filled with the rage of the LORD and the rebuke of your God.

²⁵ "Don't run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you say, 'It's hopeless! Because I love foreign gods, I'll go after them!'"

¹⁷ so that they will lack food and water, and they will be appalled with one another, and they will waste away because of their guilt.

²³ Your turbans will be on your heads, and your sandals on your feet. You won’t mourn or weep; but you will pine away in your iniquities, and moan one toward another.

¹¹ Then he said to me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost. We are clean cut off.

²¹ But as I live, and my name liveth, and the glory of the Lord shall fill the whole earth;

²⁸ Say to them, 'Surely as I live,' declares the LORD, 'just as you spoke in my hearing, so I will do to you;

¹⁴ For we must die and are as water split on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; God does not take away life, but devises means that he who is banished is not an outcast from him.

²³ May you turn to my argument! Behold, I shall pour out my spirit upon you; I will make my words known to you.

³⁶ "But he who sins against me wrongs himself. All who hate me love death."

¹⁸ Lift up your eyes all around and see; they all gather and come to you. As I live, says the LORD, you shall surely wear them as an ornament, and bind them on as a bride.

⁶ Seek the LORD while he may be found. Call on him while he is near. ⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

²² Return, O apostate children, I will heal your backsliding. 'Look, we come to you, for you are the LORD our God.

²⁴ "As surely as I live," declares the LORD, "even if Jehoiakim's son King Jehoiachin of Judah were a signet ring on my right hand, I would pull you off

¹⁸ “I have surely heard Ephraim grieving thus, 'You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf. Turn me, and I will be turned; for you are the LORD my God. ¹⁹ Indeed, after I turned away, then I repented. And after I came to understand, I slapped my forehead. I was both ashamed and humiliated because I bear the disgrace of my youth.'" ²⁰ "Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a darling child? Indeed, as often as I've spoken about him, I surely still remember him. Therefore I deeply yearn for him. I'll surely have great compassion on him," declares the LORD.

¹⁸ As surely as I live," declares the king, whose name is the LORD of the Heavenly Armies. Indeed, one will come like Tabor among the mountains and like Carmel by the sea.

³³ for he doth not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men.

¹¹ '"As I live, declares the Sovereign LORD,' 'because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable idols and with all your abominations I will withdraw, and my eye will have no pity and I will not spare you.

⁶ Therefore say to the house of Israel, So says the Sovereign LORD: Repent and turn from your idols, and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

¹⁶ These three men if they were in it, as I live, saith the Lord Eternal, should not save either sons or daughters: they only should be saved, but the land should be made desolate. ¹⁷ Or if I bring a sword on that land and say, Let a sword go through the land, and I will cut off man and beast from it; ¹⁸ '"As I am alive, declares the Sovereign LORD, not even Noah, Daniel, and Job could rescue their sons or daughters. They alone would be saved.'"

⁴⁸ As I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, your sister Sodom, she and her daughters, have not done as you and your daughters have done.

²³ '"Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Sovereign LORD, that he should turn from his ways and live?

³⁰ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one according to his ways, says the Sovereign LORD. Return and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin. ³¹ Cast away from you all your sins by which you have sinned; and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will you die, O house of Israel? ³² For I have no pleasure in the death of the dying," declares the Sovereign LORD. "And so repent and live!"

¹³ As it's written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has befallen us, but we still haven't sought the LORD our God by turning from our lawlessness to pay attention to your truth.

⁸ "How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is changed within me. All my compassion is aroused.

¹ "Return, Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have fallen due to your own iniquity.

⁹ "Therefore, as I live"—a declaration of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel— "Moab shall be as Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a place of weeds and salt pits and a desolation forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remainder of my nation shall possess them."

²⁰ So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. ²¹ then the son said to him, father, I have sinned against heaven, and against you, I am no longer worthy to be called your son. ²² But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. ²³ Bring the fatted calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate. ²⁴ For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate. ²⁵ Meanwhile the older son was in the field, and as he approached the house, he heard music and dancing. ²⁶ So he called one of the servants and asked what was going on. ²⁷ "'Your brother is come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has him safe and sound.' ²⁸ The older son became angry and refused to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him. ²⁹ But he answered his father, ‘Look, all these years I have served you and never disobeyed a commandment of yours. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. ³⁰ But when this son of yours returns from squandering your wealth with prostitutes, you kill the fatted calf for him!’ ³¹ 'Child,' the father answered, 'you are always with me, and everything that I have is yours. ³² But it was fitting to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

¹⁹ Repent therefore, and turn again, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

²⁰ but to those in Damascus first, and in Jerusalem and all the region of Judea and to the Gentiles, I proclaimed that they should repent and turn to God, doing deeds worthy of repentance.

¹¹ It is written: “As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before Me; every tongue will confess to God.”

⁴ who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

⁹ The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

⁴⁸ and return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who captured them; and pray to you toward the land you gave their fathers - the city you chose and the house I built for your name: ⁴⁹ then in heaven, the place where you live, hear their prayer for mercy. Do what is right for them. ⁵⁰ »Forgive your people, who have sinned against you. Forgive all their wrongs when they rebelled against you. Cause those who captured them to have mercy on them.

¹⁴ if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

²¹ But if a wicked man turns from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is lawful and right, he will surely live. He will not die.

²⁴ But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits unrighteousness and does according to all the abominations that a wicked man does, will he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done will be remembered. In his trespass that he has trespassed and in his sin that he has sinned, in them he will die. ²⁵ "'Yet you say, "The way of the LORD is not just." Hear now, house of Israel: "Is my way not just? Aren't your ways unjust?" ²⁶ When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies in it, in his iniquity that he has done, he shall die. ²⁷ Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive. ²⁸ Because he considers and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he will surely live. He will not die. ²⁹ But the house of Israel says, The way of the Lord is not fair. Are My ways not fair, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not fair?

² Son of man, speak to the sons of thy people, and say to them, When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman,

¹⁸ When the righteous man turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die in it. ¹⁹ And when the wicked man turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he will live by it.

²⁸ “But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ ²⁹ ‘I will not,’ he replied. But later he changed his mind and went. ³⁰ Then the father went to the other son and told him the same thing. He replied, 'I will, sir,' but he didn't go. ³¹ Which of the two did what his father wanted?" They said, "The second one." Jesus said to them, "I tell you, the tax-collectors and prostitutes are going into the Kingdom of God ahead of you.

²⁵ God presented Him as an atoning sacrifice through faith in His blood, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand.

¹ My little children, I write this to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

²⁰ And when the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, and I lay a stumbling-block before him, he shall die. Since you have not warned him, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered. But I will require his blood at your hand.

⁹ To some who trusted in their own righteousness and viewed others with contempt, He also told this parable: ¹⁰ "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men--swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ¹² I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all that I get.' ¹³ But the tax-collector stood at a distance and would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but continued to beat his breast, and say, 'O God, have mercy on me, a sinner!' ¹⁴ I tell you, this man, rather than the Pharisee, went home justified. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

³ For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.

⁹ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christthe righteousness that comes from God and is by faith,

³⁸ But my righteous one will live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul is not well pleased with him."

²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled by them, and overcome, they are worse off in the end than at the beginning. ²¹ It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to know it and turn their backs on the holy commandment that was committed to them. ²² Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.”

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us.

¹³ He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

¹ If you will return, O Israel, says the LORD, return to Me. And if you will put away your hateful idols out of My face and will not waver,

⁷ At one moment I may speak about a nation or a kingdom to uproot it, pull it down, or destroy it. ⁸ But if that nation about which I spoke turns from its evil way, I'll change my mind about the disaster that I had planned for it.

¹⁸ "When I tell a wicked man that he will surely die, but you do not warn him or speak out so that he can change his wicked way in order to save his life; that wicked man will die because of his sin. I will hold you responsible for his death. ¹⁹ Yet if you warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.

²⁷ Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive.

⁸ When I say to the wicked man, O wicked man, you will surely die and you do not speak to warn the wicked man from his way, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand.

⁸ He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

¹³ But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

³ No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam collapsed on them: Do you think that they were more sinful than all the others living in Jerusalem? ⁵ No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

¹ »A man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it. He must pay five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep. ² If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him. ³ If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. ⁴ If what was stolen is actually found alive in his possession, whether an ox, a donkey or a sheep, he shall repay double.

²⁶ If you take your neighbor's coat as collateral, you shall return it to him by sunset, ²⁷ because it is his only garment; it is his cloak for his skin. In what will he sleep? And when he cries out to me, I will hear, because I am gracious.

² If any one sin and act unfaithfully against the LORD, and lie to his neighbour as to an entrusted thing or a deposit or [that in which] he hath robbed or wronged his neighbour, ³ or has found what was lost and lies about it and swears falsely concerning any of the sinful things that a man may do; ⁴ you have sinned and are guilty. Return what you stole or seized, what you were supposed to take care of, the lost item you found, ⁵ or whatever it was that you swore falsely about. Pay it back in full plus one-fifth more. Give it back to its owner on the day you bring your guilt offering.

⁵ Keep my laws and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them, I am the Lord.

⁶ »Tell the Israelites: ‘If you do something wrong to another person, you have been unfaithful to the LORD. When you realize your guilt, ⁷ you must confess your sin, pay in full for what you did wrong, add one-fifth to it, and give it to the person who was wronged. ⁸ But if the person has no close relative to whom reparation may be made, the payment must be brought to the LORD, for the priest, in addition to the ram of atonement with which he has been atoned.

⁶ "Do not take a hand mill or an upper millstone as security for a debt. That would be taking away a man's livelihood.

¹⁰ When you loan a loan of any kind to your brother, you shall not go into his house to bring forth his pledge. ¹¹ Stay outside and let the man to whom you made the loan bring it out to you. ¹² If he is a poor man, don't go to sleep with his collateral in your possession. ¹³ Be sure to return his garment to him at sunset so that he may sleep with it, and he will bless you. It will be a righteous deed before the LORD your God.

¹⁷ You must not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take a widow's clothing in pledge,

⁶ For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.

³ They drive away the donkey of orphans; they take the widow's ox as a pledge.

⁹ "The fatherless are torn from the breast; the poor are taken away as security for a loan.

⁹³ I will never forget your precepts, for with them, you have revived me.

⁷ '"if a man does not oppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his pledge, does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.

¹² '"He oppresses the poor and needy. He robs. He does not return the security for a loan. He looks to idols for help. He does disgusting things.

¹⁶ And he oppresses no one; he requires no pledge for a loan, and he does not commit robbery; he gives his bread to the hungry, and he covers the naked person with a garment.

²⁷ Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive. ²⁸ Because he considers and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he will surely live. He will not die.

¹¹ and I gave them my statutes and declared unto them my rights, by which the man that does them shall live by them.

¹³ But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes and they rejected my ordinances, which if a man keeps, he will live in them. And they greatly profaned my Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.

²¹ '""But the children rebelled against me. They did not walk in my statutes. They were not careful to obey my ordinances. If a man obeys them, he will live. They profaned my Sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.

⁸ "They lie down beside every altar on clothes taken from indebtedness. In the house of their God they drink the wine they have confiscated.

⁶ They were both upright in the sight of God, blamelessly observing all the Lord's commands and requirements.

⁸ Now Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I repay them quadruple.

¹² "Behold, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to render to every man according to what he has done. ¹³ I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. ¹⁴ Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.

¹⁸ "Come now, and let us reason together," says the LORD: "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

²⁵ I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake; and I will not remember your sins.

²² I have wiped your transgressions out like a cloud and your sins like mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you!"

²² None of his transgressions that he has committed will be remembered against him. In his righteousness that he has done he will live.

¹⁸ Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not keep His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. ¹⁹ You will again have compassion on us. You will tread our iniquities under foot. You will throw all our sins into the depths of the sea.

¹⁶ Again, the gift is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment that followed one sin brought condemnation, but the gift that followed many trespasses brought justification.

²¹ so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness, to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹ My little children, I write this to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. ² And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. ³ By this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commands.

² "Do you think this to be just? You say: 'I am in the right before God.'

⁸ "Would you undo my justice? Would you condemn me so that you can be righteous?

²⁵ "'Yet you say, "The way of the LORD is not just." Hear now, house of Israel: "Is my way not just? Aren't your ways unjust?"

²⁹ But the house of Israel says, The way of the Lord is not fair. Are My ways not fair, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not fair?

²⁰ Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not fair. O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways.

²⁴ Then he who had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed: ²⁵ So in my fear, I went and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what belongs to you.’ ²⁶ But his master answered him, 'You wicked and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed?

²¹ for I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.' ²² He said to him, 'I will judge you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a hard man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?

²⁶ When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies in it, in his iniquity that he has done, he shall die. ²⁷ Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive.

¹² "So you, son of man, say to your people that the righteousness of the righteous shall not save him in the day of his transgression, and the wickedness of the wicked will not cause him to stumble on the day of his returning from his wickedness; and the righteous will not be able to live by it on the day when he returns to his sin. ¹³ When I tell the righteous that he will surely live; if he trusts in his righteousness, and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but he will die in his iniquity that he has committed.

¹² Also to you, Lord, belongs gracious love, because you reward each person according to what he does.

³ A man's foolishness ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the LORD.

¹⁴ For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

²⁹ But the house of Israel says, The way of the Lord is not fair. Are My ways not fair, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not fair? ³⁰ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one according to his ways, says the Sovereign LORD. Return and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin.

²⁷ For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done.

²⁹ And will come out--those who have done good rising to Life, and those who have lived evil lives rising for condemnation.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad.

¹² And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And there were open books, and one of them was the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books. ¹³ The sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them, and all were judged according to what they had done. ¹⁴ And death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death. ¹⁵ And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

¹² "Behold, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to render to every man according to what he has done.

⁴ and also the innocent blood that he shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was not willing to forgive. ⁵ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ⁶ So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead. ⁷ The king of Egypt did not again come out from his land, for the king of Babylon had taken territory from the Wadi of Egypt to the Euphrates River.

⁴ The city was breached, and the entire army left during the night through the gate that stood between the two walls beside the royal garden, even though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city. They escaped by way of the Arabah,

¹⁰ The army of the Chaldaeans under the command of the captain of the army broke down the walls around Jerusalem.

¹⁷ And he brought up [against] them the king of the Chaldees, and slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and spared not young man nor maiden, old man nor him of hoary head: he gave [them] all into his hand. ¹⁸ He brought to Babylon each of the utensils from God's temple, the treasures from the LORD's Temple, and the treasures of the king and his officials. ¹⁹ They burned God's house, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all of its valuable vessels. ²⁰ And all who had not come to death by the sword he took away prisoners to Babylon; and they became servants to him and to his sons till the kingdom of Persia came to power: ²¹ To fill up the word of the LORD in the mouth of Jeremiah, till the land delighted in her Sabbaths: all the days she was laid waste she rested, to complete seventy years.

¹ In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem, and besieged it. ² On the ninth day of the fourth month of Zedekiah's eleventh year as king, the city walls were broken through. ³ And all the officials of the king of Babylon came and sat in the Middle Gate: Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim the chief officer, Nergal-sharezer the high official, with all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon. ⁴ When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled and went out of the city at night by way of the king's garden through the gate between the two walls. Then he went out on the road toward the Arabah. ⁵ But the Chaldean army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And they took him, and made him go up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment on him. ⁶ At Riblah, the king of Babylon executed Zedekiah's sons right before his eyes. He also executed all the nobles of Judah. ⁷ Then he put out Zedekiah's eyes and bound him with bronze fetters to take him to Babylon. ⁸ The Babylonians burned down the royal palace and the houses of the people and tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

⁴ and in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came against Jerusalem with all his army. He encamped near it and set up siege works all around it. ⁵ So the city came under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. ⁶ By the ninth day of the fourth month the famine became so severe that there was no food for the people of the land. ⁷ The wall of the city was broken through, and all the soldiers fled, leaving the city at night by way of the gate between the two walls next to the king's garden, even though the Chaldeans were all around the city. They went in the direction of the Arabah. ⁸ The Babylonian army pursued King Zedekiah and caught up with him in the plain of Jericho. His entire army had deserted him. ⁹ Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he passed sentence on him. ¹⁰ And the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also slaughtered all the officials of Judah at Riblah. ¹¹ And he put out Zedekiah's eyes; and the king of Babylon, chaining him in iron bands, took him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death. ¹² Now the tenth day of the fifth Month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan the chief captain and the king of Babylon's servants came unto Jerusalem, ¹³ He burned down the LORD’s Temple, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem. Every important building was burned down. ¹⁴ The entire Babylonian army that was with the captain of the guard tore down the walls around Jerusalem.

² On the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of the exile of king Jehoyachin,

²⁶ on that day a survivor will come to you with the news. ²⁷ "On that day your mouth will be opened to him who escaped. You will speak and be mute no longer. So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD."

¹ In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

¹ In the twenty fifth year of our exile, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was struck, on that same day the hand of the LORD was on me, and He brought me there.

³ the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the LORD came upon me.

²² And the hand of the LORD was on me there, and he said to me, "Rise up, go out to the valley, and there I will speak with you."

²⁶ I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, that you shall be mute, and unable to reprove them; for they are a rebellious house. ²⁷ But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall tell them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says.' He who hears, let him hear; and he who refuses, let him refuse; for they are a rebellious house.”

¹ The hand of the LORD was upon me and he brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the midst of the valley and it was full of bones.

⁶⁴ Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he started to speak, praising God.

¹⁰ Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who did not have anything, and he gave them vineyards and fields on that day.

⁷ Now when all the captains of the armies who were in the field, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedalyahu the son of Achikam governor over the land, and that he had entrusted unto him men, and women, and children, and these of the poorest of the land, of those that had not been carried away into exile to Babylon:

³ And you shall take a few of them, and wrap them in the fold of your garment. ⁴ »Take again some of them and throw them into the fire and burn them in the fire. Fire will spread from there to all the house of Israel.

¹⁵ "Son of man, your brothers, the men of your relatives, and all the house of Israel, all of them, to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, 'Go far away from the LORD. This land has been given to us for a possession.'

²⁷ Thus you will say to them. The Sovereign LORD says thus: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places will fall by the sword and he who is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves will die of the pestilence.

² Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to them, to the shepherds, So says the Sovereign LORD: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who are feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flock?

⁴ '"'Therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign LORD. The Sovereign LORD says to the mountains and to the hills, to the ravines and to the valleys, to the desolate wastes and to the forsaken cities that have become a prey and derision to the rest of the nations that are round about,

¹¹ Her leaders judge for bribes, and her priests teach for a price, and her prophets of it tell fortunes for money: yet they lean on the LORD, and say, “Isn’t the LORD among us? No disaster will come on us.”

⁹ And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

⁸ Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

³³ They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, 'You will be made free?'"

⁵ He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised to give possession of the land to Abraham and his descendants, even though he did not yet have a child.

¹² And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised, but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

⁷ Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants are they all his children. On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”

³ While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

⁴ »You must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it.

¹⁷ This is a lasting statute for your generations in all your dwellings: you must not eat any fat or any blood.'"

²⁶ And in any of your dwellings, you must not eat any blood belonging to birds or domestic animals. ²⁷ Any person who eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people.'"

¹⁰ And any man of the house of Israel, or of the alien who is staying in your midst, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person that eats blood and will cut him off from his people. ¹¹ For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes atonement by reason of the life. ¹² Therefore I said to the Israelites, 'None of you may eat blood, nor may the alien who is dwelling in your midst eat blood.' ¹³ »If Israelites or foreigners hunt any animal or bird that may be eaten, they must pour out the animal's blood and cover it with dirt. ¹⁴ Indeed, the life of all flesh, its blood, is in its life, so I said to the Israelites, 'You may not eat the blood of any flesh, because the life of all flesh is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.'

²⁶ "'You shall not eat any meat with the blood still in it; neither shall you practice divination, nor practice sorcery.

¹⁹ and lest having looked up to the sky, and having seen the sun and the moon and the stars, and all the heavenly bodies, you should go astray and worship them, and serve them, which the Lord your God has distributed to all the nations under heaven.

¹⁶ but you must not eat the blood: that you shall pour on the ground like water.

³² and they pounced on the spoil, and took sheep, cattle and calves and killed them on the ground and ate them with the blood. ³³ Then they told Saul, Look, the people are sinning against the LORD, eating meat with the blood. He said, You have broken faith. Roll a large stone here at once! ³⁴ Saul said, Go out among the people and tell them, 'Each man bring to me here his ox and sheep; kill them here and eat; don't sin against the LORD by eating meat with the blood'. So each of them brought his ox with him that night, and killed them there.

⁴ He that has clean hands, and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

⁹ Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods that you have not known, ¹⁰ and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

¹⁵ Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, even all the people who lived in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah saying, ¹⁶ "We refuse to listen to what you have told us in the name of the LORD. ¹⁷ But we will certainly do whatever thing goes out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings, and our rulers, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. And we had plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil. ¹⁸ But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked all things, and have been devoured by the sword and by the famine. ¹⁹ And when we burnt incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink-offerings unto her,—was this without the consent of our husbands, that we did make cakes for her to make her image, and pour out drink-offerings unto her?

⁹ Then he said to me, "The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perversion: for they say, 'The LORD has forsaken the land, and the LORD doesn't see.'

⁶ and does not eat at the mountain shrines or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period;

¹⁵ -- he hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel; he hath not defiled his neighbour`s wife,

⁶ Behold, the princes of Israel, each one in you used his power to shed blood.

⁹ In you are men of slander to shed blood; and in you they eat on the mountains; in your midst they do unchaste acts.

²⁷ Her rulers in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood and to destroy souls, to get unjust gain.

²⁰ Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals, and from blood. ²¹ For Moses has been proclaimed in every city from ancient times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”

²⁹ You must abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Farewell.”

²⁵ As for the Gentile believers, we have written them our decision that they must abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.”

⁴⁰ You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. It will happen, when you will break loose, that you will shake his yoke from off your neck.”

²⁵ The land was defiled. Therefore I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out her inhabitants. ²⁶ "'Live by my standards, and obey my rules. Neither you nor any foreigner should ever do any of these disgusting things. ²⁷ (for all these abominations have the men of the land done, that were before you, and the land became defiled); ²⁸ »‘If you make the land unclean, it will vomit you out as it has vomited out the people who were there before you. ²⁹ »‘Whoever does any of these disgusting things must be excluded from the people. ³⁰ Therefore you shall keep my requirements, that you do not practice any of these abominable customs, which were practiced before you, and that you do not defile yourselves with them: I am the LORD your God.'"

¹³ And a man who lies with a male as one lies with a woman, both of them have done a detestable thing; they shall certainly be put to death; their blood shall be on them.

²² Guard all my statutes and all my judgments and work them: that the land where I bring you to settle not vomit you.

²⁵ "When you have had children and grandchildren and you have grown old in the land and you act corruptly and you make a divine image of the form of anything and you do evil in the eyes of the LORD your God, thus provoking him to anger, ²⁶ I call Heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you shall soon utterly perish from off the land which you are crossing over Jordan to possess. You shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

¹⁸ Be alert so there is no man, woman, family, or a tribe whose heart is turning away from the LORD your God to go and serve the gods of those nations. "Be alert so there will be no root among you that produces poisonous and bitter fruit, ¹⁹ because when such a person hears the words of this oath, he will bless himself and say: 'I will have a peaceful life, even though I'm determined to be stubborn.' By doing this he will be sweeping away both watered and parched ground alike.' ²⁰ the LORD will never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and / His jealousy will burn against that man. Every curse which is written in this book will rest on him. the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven. ²¹ The LORD will set him apart from all the tribes of Israel for destruction, according to the curses of the covenant that were written in this book of the Law." ²² »The next generation of your children and foreigners who come from distant countries will see the plagues that have happened in this land and the diseases the LORD sent here. ²³ [that] the whole land of it is brimstone, and salt, [and] a burning, [that] it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which LORD overthrew in his anger, and i

¹⁵ However, just as all of the good things have come about that the LORD your God promised, so also the LORD will bring upon you all of the threats until he has destroyed you from possessing this good land that he has given you. ¹⁶ If you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded to you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the LORD's anger will be kindled against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you."

³⁰ Therefore the LORD the God of Israel says, 'I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before Me forever'. But now the LORD says, 'Far be it from Me. Those who honour Me I will honour, and those who despise Me shall be despised.

⁵ And Solomon followed Ashtaroth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. ⁶ So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD and did not fully follow after the LORD as David his father. ⁷ Then Solomon built a high place to Chemosh the idol of Moab, and to their king the idol of the children of Ammon.

¹⁶ But to the wicked God says, "What right have you to recite my statutes and mention my covenant with your mouth, ¹⁷ You hate instruction and toss my words behind you. ¹⁸ If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and have cast in your lot with adulterers. ¹⁹ you spread your mouth to evil and contrive your tongue to deceit: ²⁰ You sit; you speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son.

²⁰ Can wicked rulers be allied with you? They frame mischief by decree (the law). ²¹ They gather together against the righteous, condemning the innocent to death.

⁸ They were well-fed, lusty stallions, each one neighing after his neighbor's wife. ⁹ Shouldn't I punish them for these things?” says the LORD. “Shouldn't my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

¹¹ or who does not do any of those things, but even has eaten at the mountain shrines, and defiled his neighbor's wife, ¹² '"He oppresses the poor and needy. He robs. He does not return the security for a loan. He looks to idols for help. He does disgusting things.

⁹ In you are men of slander to shed blood; and in you they eat on the mountains; in your midst they do unchaste acts. ¹⁰ In you they have let the shame of their fathers be seen; in you they have done wrong to a woman at the time when she was unclean. ¹¹ And one has committed abomination with his neighbor's wife; and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law; and another in you has violated his sister, his father's daughter.

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance.

³ Her officials in her midst are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they leave nothing until the morning.

³ For you have spent enough time in the past doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.

⁸ But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”

²⁷ But nothing impure shall enter into it, nor shall any man who commits shameful acts, or who lies: but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

² And when the hand of the Midianites was sore upon Israel, the children of Israel made them dens in the mountains and caves and strongholds.

⁶ And when the men of Israel saw that they were straitened (for the people were distressed), they hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in dens, and in pits.

¹ David went from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and all his father's household heard, they came down to him there.

¹⁴ David stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds and in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but God didn't deliver him into his hand.

³ He came to the sheep pens beside the road, and a cave was there. Then Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost part of the cave.

¹⁹ People will go into caves in the rocks and into holes in the ground because of the LORD's terrifying presence and the honor of his majesty when he rises to shake the earth.

² "When they say to you, 'Where can we go?', say to them, 'This is what the LORD says: "Those destined for death, to death will go; those destined for the sword, to the sword will go; and those destined for captivity, to captivity will go. ³ And I will set over them four kinds, says the LORD: the sword to kill, and the dogs to drag off, and the birds of the heaven and the beast of the earth to devour and destroy. ⁴ And I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah; for what he did in Jerusalem.

⁹ The cistern where Ishmael threw all the bodies of the men he had killed was the same one that King Asa made as a part of his defense against King Baasha of Israel. Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, filled it with the bodies.

²² Now, be fully aware that you will die by the sword, by famine, and by plague in the place where you want to settle."

¹² I'll take the remnant of Judah that determined to go to the land of Egypt to settle there, and all of them will come to an end in the land of Egypt. They'll fall by the sword, and they'll come to an end by famine. They'll become a curse, an object of horror, ridicule, and scorn.

¹² '"One third of your people will die by plague or be consumed by famine! One third will fall by the sword! One third I will scatter to every wind! I will unsheathe a sword behind them (war will follow them). ¹³ '"I will unleash my anger. I will use my fury against you, and I will get revenge. When my fury is unleashed against you, you will know that I, the LORD, spoke to you with all my zeal. ¹⁴ And I will make you into a waste and a reproach among the nations that are around you, in the eyes of all who pass by. ¹⁵ So it will be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment, to the nations that are around you, when I execute judgments on you in anger and in wrath, and in wrathful rebukes—I, the LORD, have spoken it— ¹⁶ '"When I shoot my destructive arrows of famine at you, I will shoot to kill you. I will bring more and more famine into your land. I will cut off your food supply. ¹⁷ And I will send against you famine and fierce animals, and they will make you childless; and plague and blood will pass through you, and I will bring the sword upon you. I, the LORD, I have spoken!"

¹¹ Thus says the Sovereign LORD: Strike with your hand and stamp with your foot and say, Alas! Because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, they shall fall by the sword, by the famine and by the plague. ¹² He that is far off shall die of the pestilence; and he that is near shall fall by the sword; and he that remaineth and is besieged shall die by the famine; thus will I spend My fury upon them. ¹³ You will know that I am the LORD, when their slain men are among their idols around their altars, on every high hill, on all the tops of the mountains, under every green tree, and under every thick oak, the places where they offered pleasant aroma to all their idols. ¹⁴ And I will stretch out my hand against them, and I will make the land a desolation and a wasteland from the desert to Riblah in all of their dwellings, and they will know that I am the LORD." '"

²⁴ "Son of man, the inhabitants of these ruins on the soil of Israel are saying, 'Abraham was one man, and he took possession of the land, and we are many; the land has been given for us as a possession.'

⁴ On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all of your troops, and the peoples who are with you, to birds of prey, birds of every wing, and animals of the field I will give you as food.

²¹ To fill up the word of the LORD in the mouth of Jeremiah, till the land delighted in her Sabbaths: all the days she was laid waste she rested, to complete seventy years.

¹¹ Then I said: "How long, O LORD? And He answered: "Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant, until the houses are deserted and the land is utterly desolate.

¹¹ "I'll make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a refuge for jackals. I'll make the towns of Judah desolate, without inhabitants."

¹⁶ "I'm about to send many fishermen, declares the LORD, and they'll catch them. Afterwards, I'll send for many hunters and they'll hunt for them on every mountain and hill and in the crevices of the rocks.

¹¹ This whole land will be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

² So says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel: You have seen all the evil that I have brought on Jerusalem, and on all the cities of Judah. And, behold, today they are a ruin, and no one lives there

⁶ Therefore my wrath and my anger was poured out, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as it is today.'

²² The LORD could no longer bear it because of your evil deeds and the repulsive things that you did. So your land has become a ruin and an object of horror and ridicule without an inhabitant, as is the case today.

² Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them; ³ and say, You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign LORD: Thus says the Sovereign LORD to the mountains and to the hills, to the rivers and to the valleys: Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword on you, and I will destroy your high places. ⁴ '"Your altars will be destroyed! Your incense burners will be smashed. I will kill your people in front of your idols. ⁵ I will lay the dead bodies of the children of Israel before their idols; and I will scatter your bones around your altars. ⁶ In all your dwelling places, the cities will be laid waste and the high places will be desolate; that your altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and your idols may be broken and cease, and your incense altars may be cut down, and your works may be abolished.

¹⁴ And I will stretch out my hand against them, and I will make the land a desolation and a wasteland from the desert to Riblah in all of their dwellings, and they will know that I am the LORD." '"

²⁴ '"I will bring the wicked of the nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the mighty, and their sanctuaries will be desecrated.

²⁰ '"The inhabited cities will be laid waste and the land will be a desolation. So you will know that I am the LORD."'

⁸ '"I will make the land desolate, because they have acted unfaithfully,' declares the Sovereign LORD."

²¹ "Say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Sovereign LORD: "Look! I will be profaning my sanctuary, the pride of your strength and the delight of your eyes and the object of your own affection; and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind will fall by the sword,

⁶ Thus says the LORD: "And the supporters of Egypt will fall, and the majesty of its strength will go down from Migdol to Syene; by the sword they will fall in it," declares the Sovereign LORD. ⁷ and they desolate midst the desolate lands; and her cities midst the cities are wasted.

³⁴ And the desolate land shall be tilled, instead of lying desolate in the sight of all that passed by. ³⁵ Then shall they say, This land, that was desolate, is become like the garden of 'Eden; and the cities that were ruined, and desolate, and broken down, are become fortified, and inhabited.

¹³ The earth will become desolate because of the inhabitants and the fruit of their deeds.

¹³ "'I cried, and they would not listen. Now they will cry, and I will not listen,' said the LORD Almighty! ¹⁴ But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

¹⁸ "Then the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD, when I am honored through Pharaoh, through his chariots and his horsemen."

⁹ The Israelites secretly did things which were not right, against the LORD their God; they built high places for themselves in all their towns, from the watchtower up to the fortified city. ¹⁰ and they set up for themselves pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill, and under every green tree; ¹¹ and there they burned incense in all the high places, as the nations whom the LORD carried away before them did; and they did wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger; ¹² They served idols which the LORD had said to them, "You shall not do this thing!" ¹³ Nevertheless, the LORD had warned both Israel and Judah by means of every prophet and seer: "Turn away from your evil practices and keep my commandments and statutes according to the entire law that I gave your ancestors and that I sent to you through my servants, the prophets." ¹⁴ And they did not give ear, but became stiff-necked, like their fathers who had no faith in the Lord their God. ¹⁵ They rejected the LORD's statutes, the covenant that he had made with their ancestors, and his warnings that he gave them. They pursued meaninglessness {— } and became meaningless themselves {— } as they followed the lifestyles of the nations that surrounded them, a practice that the LORD had warned them not to do. ¹⁶ They abandoned all the commands of the LORD their God and made for themselves two molten calf-shaped idols; they made a pole of Asherah worship and bowed down to the army of the heavens and served Baal. ¹⁷ They made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, they practiced divination and read omens, and they sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the LORD to provoke him. ¹⁸ the LORD was very angry with Israel. He removed them from his sight. Only the tribe of Judah kept its place.

¹⁴ All the leaders of the priests and the people likewise increased in unfaithfulness according to all the detestable things of the nations. And they polluted the house of the LORD that he had consecrated in Jerusalem. ¹⁵ The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. ¹⁷ And he brought up [against] them the king of the Chaldees, and slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and spared not young man nor maiden, old man nor him of hoary head: he gave [them] all into his hand.

¹⁶ the LORD is known [by] the judgment he hath executed: the wicked is ensnared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

¹⁷ Shame and terrify them eternally; yes, that they blush and destruct; ¹⁸ And let them know Your name is the LORD, that You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

¹ "Roam about through the streets of Jerusalem, and look please, and take note, and search at its public squares, if you can find a person who does justice, who seeks honesty, so that I may forgive it. ² Although they say, 'As surely as the LORD lives,' still they are swearing falsely." ³ O LORD, are not Your eyes for the truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain. You consumed them, yet they refused to take correction. They made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to return. ⁴ Then I said, "These are only the poor, they're foolish, for they don't know the LORD's way, the requirement of their God. ⁵ Let me go to the leaders and speak to them. For they know the LORD's way, the requirement of their God." "But they, all together, have broken the yoke and torn off the restraints. ⁶ Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will devastate them. A leopard is watching their towns, and everyone who goes out of them will be torn to pieces. For their transgressions are many, and their apostasies numerous. ⁷ "How can I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me, and they have sworn by those who are not gods. But I fed them to the full, and they committed adultery, and flocked to the house of a prostitute.

²⁵ Your iniquities have turned these away, And your sins have kept the good from you. ²⁶ For among my people are found wicked men, that lie in wait as fowlers, setting snares and traps to catch men. ²⁷ Like a cage full of birds, so their houses are full of deceit; therefore they have become great and grown rich. ²⁸ and have grown fat and sleek. There is no limit to their evil deeds. They don't argue the case of the orphan to secure justice. They don't defend the rights of the poor. ²⁹ 'Should I not punish them for this?,' asks the LORD, 'Should I not avenge myself on a nation like this?' ³⁰ An astounding and horrible thing has happened in the land. ³¹ "The prophets prophesy falsely, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?

⁷ The slain will fall among you, and you will know that I am the LORD.

¹¹ Thus says the Sovereign LORD: Strike with your hand and stamp with your foot and say, Alas! Because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, they shall fall by the sword, by the famine and by the plague.

²⁷ '"The king will mourn. The prince will be clothed with despair and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct. By their own standards I will judge them. Then they will know that I am the LORD.'"

⁶ And he said to me, "Son of man, "Do you see what they are doing—great detestable things that the house of Israel is committing here so as to drive me from my sanctuary, and yet you will see again greater detestable things." ⁷ Then he took me to the entrance of the courtyard. As I looked, I saw a hole in the wall. ⁸ He said to me: "Son of man, dig through the wall. So I dug through the wall, and I saw a door." ⁹ And he said unto me, Go in, and see the wicked abominations which they are doing here. ¹⁰ So I went in and looked, and saw every form of creeping things, abominable animals, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed around on the wall. ¹¹ Standing in front of them were seventy elders of the house of Israel. Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan stood among them. Each man had his censer in his hand and the fragrance of the cloud of incense was rising. ¹² Then He said to me, Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, every man in his rooms of images? They say, 'the LORD doesn't see us; the LORD has forsaken the land'. ¹³ Then he said to me, You will see even more disgusting things which they do. ¹⁴ Then he brought me to the entrance of the gate of the LORD's house toward the north; and I saw women sitting there weeping for Tammuz (the god). ¹⁵ He said to me: "Do you see this, son of man? Yet you will see still greater abominations than these."

² You, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the city of blood? So now cause her to know all her abominations. ³ You shall say, 'The Sovereign LORD says: “A city that sheds blood within herself, that her time may come, and that makes idols against herself to defile her! ⁴ You have become guilty in your blood that you have shed, and are defiled in your idols which you have made! You have caused your days to draw near, and have come even to your years. Therefore I have made you a reproach to the nations, and a mocking to all the countries. ⁵ Those who are near, and those who are far from you, will mock you, you infamous one, full of tumult. ⁶ Behold, the princes of Israel, each one in you used his power to shed blood. ⁷ In you have they treated father and mother with contempt. Among you they have oppressed the foreigner. In you they have wronged the fatherless and the widow. ⁸ You have despised my holy things, and have profaned my Sabbaths. ⁹ In you are men of slander to shed blood; and in you they eat on the mountains; in your midst they do unchaste acts. ¹⁰ In you they have let the shame of their fathers be seen; in you they have done wrong to a woman at the time when she was unclean. ¹¹ And one has committed abomination with his neighbor's wife; and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law; and another in you has violated his sister, his father's daughter. ¹² They take a bribe among you in order to shed blood; and you take usury, and you make gain from your neighbors by extortion, and so you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign LORD. ¹³ And behold, I have struck My palm against your unjust gain which you have made, and at your blood which has been in your midst. ¹⁴ Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I will deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken it and will do it. ¹⁵ And I will disperse thee in the nations, and will scatter thee among the countries, and I will put an end to thy uncleanness in thee.

²⁵ There is a conspiracy of her prophets within it, like a roaring lion ravening the prey. They have devoured souls. They take treasure and precious things. They have made many widows within it. ²⁶ her priests do violence to my law, and profane my holy things: they put no difference between the holy and profane, neither do they make known [the difference] between the unclean and the clean, and they hide their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. ²⁷ Her rulers in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood and to destroy souls, to get unjust gain. ²⁸ '"Her prophets have smeared whitewash for them. They see false visions and divine lies for them. They say: "This is what the Sovereign LORD says, when the LORD has not spoken." ²⁹ The people in the land useth wicked extortion and robbery. They vex the poor and needy and oppress the stranger against right. ³⁰ '"I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before me on behalf of the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one. ³¹ I will pour out my wrath upon them; I consumed them in the fire of mine anger: I gave their way upon their head, says the Sovereign LORD.

⁴⁹ They will recompense your lewdness on you, and you will bear the sins of your idols. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.'”

¹¹ I will execute judgments on Moab. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”

¹⁷ Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings: their way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed woman. ¹⁸ And I poured out my fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon the land, and because they had defiled it with their idols.

⁹ The LORD's voice calls to the city, and wisdom sees your name: "Listen to the rod, and he who appointed it. ¹⁰ Am I to let the stores of the evil-doer go out of my memory, and the short measure, which is cursed? ¹¹ Shall I be pure with dishonest scales, and with a bag of deceitful weights? ¹² Her rich people are filled with violence, and her inhabitants tell lies their tongues speak deceitfully!

¹ Woe to the oppressive city for she is rebellious and polluted (defiled)! ² She obeyed not the voice. She received not correction. She trusted not in the LORD. She did not draw near to her God. ³ Her officials in her midst are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they leave nothing until the morning. ⁴ Her prophets are vain-glorious, treacherous persons; her priests profane the sanctuary, they do violence to the law.

¹³ And so the LORD declares, "These people draw near to me with their mouths, and honor me with their lips, but their hearts remain distant from me. Their fear of me consists of commands dictated by men.

² Day after day they seek me, and desire to know my ways; like a people who have practised righteousness, and who have not forsaken the ordinance of God. They now ask of me a just decision and desire to draw near to God.

¹⁸ the LORD revealed their plot to me so that I would understand. He showed me what they were doing. ¹⁹ But I was like a docile lamb being brought to the slaughter. And I did not know that they had plotted evils against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name may be remembered no more.

¹⁸ Then they said, “Come! Let's devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won't perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let's strike him with the tongue, and let's not give heed to any of his words.”

³⁵ This is what you should say to one another and among yourselves, 'What has the LORD answered?' or 'What has the LORD said?'

¹ Then all the commanders of the armies, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the smallest to the greatest, approached ² came to Jeremias the prophet and said to him, Have compassion on us, we beseech thee and pray to the Lord thy God for this remnant; for we are left only few of many as thine eyes see. ³ "Pray that the LORD our God will show us the way we should go and what we should do." ⁴ I answered: "Very well, then. I will pray to the LORD our God, just as you have asked. I will tell you what he says. I will not keep back anything from you." ⁵ Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness among us, if we don't do according to all the word with which the LORD your God sends you to tell us. ⁶ Whether it seems good or bad, we will obey the LORD our God to whom we send you, so it may go well for us. Indeed, we will obey the LORD our God."

²⁰ that you have made a fatal mistake, for you sent me to the LORD your God, saying, 'Pray for us to the LORD our God, and all that the LORD our God says, so tell us and we will do it.'

⁸ 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

¹⁶ They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and that You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You defer to no one, because You pay no attention to external appearance. ¹⁷ Tell us, then, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"

²⁸ "the LORD heard the words you spoke to me. He told me: 'I have heard what the people said to you. Everything they said was good. ²⁹ Oh that they had such a heart with them to fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might go well with them and with their children forever.

³⁶ But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue. ³⁷ Their hearts were not loyal to him. They were not faithful to his promise.

¹³ And to whom a word of the LORD hath been, Rule on rule, rule on rule, line on line, line on line, A little here, a little there, So that they go and have stumbled backward, And been broken, and snared, and captured.

¹⁶ This is what the LORD says: "Stand beside the roads and watch. Ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is. Walk in it and find rest for yourselves. But they said, 'We won't walk in it!' ¹⁷ "'I set watchmen over you. I said: 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But they said: 'We will not listen!'"

³³ "Jeremiah, when these people, the prophet, or a priest ask you, 'What is the oracle of the LORD?' say to them, 'You are the burden, and I'll cast you out,'" declares the LORD. ³⁴ "And the prophet, and the priest, and the people who say, 'The burden of the LORD,' I will punish that man and his house. ³⁵ This is what you should say to one another and among yourselves, 'What has the LORD answered?' or 'What has the LORD said?' ³⁶ But you shall not mention the burden of the LORD, for the burden is to each one his word, and so you twist the words of the living God, the LORD Almighty, our God. ³⁷ Thus shall you say to the prophet, What has the LORD answered you? and, What has the LORD spoken? ³⁸ But, since ye keep on saying, The Oracle of the LORD, therefore, Thus saith the LORD, Because ye have said this word, The oracle of the LORD, whereas I had sent unto you saying, Ye shall not say, The oracle of the LORD

¹ When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of the LORD their God, with which the LORD their God had sent him to them, even all these words, ² Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the arrogant (egotistical) men said to Jeremiah: "You are telling a lie! the LORD our God has not sent you to say: 'You are not to enter Egypt to reside there." ³ Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us to give us over into the hand of the Chaldeans. They will put us to death or exile us to Babylon. ⁴ So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, didn't obey the LORD's voice, to dwell in the land of Judah. ⁵ But Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces took all the rest of Judah who had come back into the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been forced to go; ⁶ the men, and the women, and the children, and the king's daughters, and every person who Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah; ⁷ They did not listen to the LORD. They went to Egypt. They went as far as Tahpanhes.

¹⁶ "We refuse to listen to what you have told us in the name of the LORD.

¹ And then in the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, I was sitting in my house, and the elders of Judah were sitting before me. And the hand of the Sovereign LORD fell on me there,

¹ Some of Israel's elders came to me and sat down in front of me.

¹ In the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, some of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the LORD, and sat before me. ² Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ³ Son of man, speak to the old men of Israel, and say to them, Thus said the Sovereign LORD: Come ye to seek me? I live, if I will be sought for you, says the Sovereign LORD. ⁴ Will you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man? Make known to them the detestable things of their ancestors. ⁵ And say to them, So says the Sovereign LORD: In the day that I chose Israel, and lifted up My hand to the seed of the house of Jacob, and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt; when I lifted up My hand to them, saying, I am the LORD your God; ⁶ in that day I swore to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands. ⁷ And I said to them, Cast away every man the abominations of his eyes and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. ⁸ But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me. They did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. ⁹ But I worked for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them out of the land of Egypt. ¹⁰ Therefore I brought them out from the land of Egypt, and brought them into the desert. ¹¹ and I gave them my statutes and declared unto them my rights, by which the man that does them shall live by them. ¹² '""I also gave them certain days to worship me as a sign between us so that they would know that I, the LORD, made them holy. ¹³ But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes and they rejected my ordinances, which if a man keeps, he will live in them. And they greatly profaned my Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to consume them. ¹⁴ But I wrought for my name`s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. <sup>15</sup> Yet even l lifted up my hand to them. in the desert,— That I would not b1ing them into the land which I had given to them flowing with milk and honey, The beauty, it was. of all lands: <sup>16</sup> because they rejected my ordinances, and did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths, for their heart went after their idols. <sup>17</sup> '""But I had compassion on them. I did not destroy them or completely wipe them out in the desert. <sup>18</sup> I said to their children in the wilderness, 'Don't walk in the statutes of your fathers. Don't observe their ordinances or defile yourselves with their idols. <sup>19</sup> I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my rights, and do them; <sup>20</sup> Make my Sabbaths holy. They shall be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.' <sup>21</sup> '""But the children rebelled against me. They did not walk in my statutes. They were not careful to obey my ordinances. If a man obeys them, he will live. They profaned my Sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness. <sup>22</sup> But I withdrew my hand, and wrought for my name`s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. ²³ Again I lifted up my hand upon them in the wilderness, to disperse them among the nations, and scatter them through the countries: ²⁴ because they had not executed my ordinances, but had rejected my statutes, and had profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols. ²⁵ Therefore I also gave them statutes that were not good and by which they could not live. ²⁶ Yea I let them defile themselves with their gifts, when they caused every firstborn to pass through the fire,-.that I might make them desolate. To the end they might know that, I, am the LORD. ²⁷ Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, So says the Sovereign LORD: Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed Me, in that they have committed a sin against Me. ²⁸ For after I had brought them into the land that I promised to give them, when they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees: they made there offerings, and provoked me with their oblations, making sweet savours there, and poured out their drink offerings. ²⁹ Then I said to them, What is the high place to which ye go? and its name is called Bamah to this day. ³⁰ Therefore say to the house of Israel, So says the Sovereign LORD: Are you defiled in the same way as your fathers? And do you go whoring after their abominations? ³¹ When you offer your gifts, when you make your sons pass through the fire, do you pollute yourselves with all your idols to this day? Should I be inquired of by you, house of Israel? As I live, says the Sovereign LORD, I will not be inquired of by you! ³² And it shall not be as ye say, We will be as the nations, and as the tribes of the earth, to worship stocks and stones.

²⁴ No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

²⁴ "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵ The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock. ²⁶ But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. ²⁷ The rain came down, the floods rose, the winds blew and beat upon that house, and down it fell — with a mighty crash."

²² The seed sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

²² When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.

⁴⁸ He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. ⁴⁹ But the man who merely hears them and does not practice them is like a man who built a house upon the ground without a foundation. The torrent burst upon it, and at once it collapsed, and the wreck of that house was complete."

²¹ But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”

³⁹ She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to His message.

²⁸ But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

¹⁵ And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” ¹⁶ Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance. ¹⁷ And he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' ¹⁸ Then he said: ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my produce and my goods. ¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?' ²¹ This is how it will be for anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God.”

¹⁴ The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all of this and were scoffing at Jesus.

³³ So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. All of us are here now in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has ordered you to say."

⁵ For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

⁹ But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

²² Obey the message; do not merely listen to it, and deceive yourselves. ²³ For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, ²⁴ and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

¹⁴ What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? ¹⁵ Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. ¹⁶ If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that?

¹⁷ If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him? ¹⁸ Little children, let us not love in word or tongue but in deed and in truth.

¹⁶ Others are like the seeds sown on rocky places. They hear the word and at once receive it with joy. ¹⁷ but since they don't have any roots, they last for only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes along because of the word, they immediately fall away.

²⁰ because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man. When he heard John’s words, he was greatly perplexed; yet he listened to him gladly.

³⁵ John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light.

¹⁹ Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and he let none of His words fall to the ground. ²⁰ All Israel from Dan to Beersheba realized that Samuel was faithful as a prophet to the LORD.

⁸ And it happened when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent to the king, saying, Why have you torn your clothes? Let him now come to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.

⁹ "A prophet who predicts peace can only be recognized as a prophet whom the LORD has truly sent when that prophet's predictions come true."

⁵ And they, whether they listen or whether they fail to listen, for they are a rebellious house, they will know that a prophet was in their midst.

²⁹ And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land desolate and a waste because of all their abominations which they have done.

¹¹ ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off as a testimony against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’
