¹ "We turned and set out for the desert on the road to the Reed Sea just as the LORD had directed me. We traveled around Mount Seir for many days. ² "Then the LORD said to me, ³ You have been journeying round this mountain long enough: now go to the north; ⁴ and command this people, "You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives, the descendants of Esau who live around Seir. They will be afraid of you so be very careful. ⁵ Make no attack on them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even space enough for a man's foot: because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for his heritage. ⁶ "'You must pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink. ⁷ For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; He has known your walking through this great wilderness; these forty years the LORD your God has been with you and you have lacked nothing. ⁸ So we bypassed our relatives, the descendants of Esau who live in Seir. We turned through the Arabah desert from Elath, and from Ezion-geber we traveled the desert road to Moab." ⁹ "Then the LORD said to me, 'Don't harass Moab or provoke them to war, because I won't give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their property. ¹⁰ (The Emim dwelt in it beforetime, a people great and numerous, and as tall as the Anakim. ¹¹ Like the Anakim, they too were accounted as Rephaim, yet the Moabites called them Emim. ¹² The Horites also lived in Seir before, but the children of Esau succeeded them; and they destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place; as Israel did to the land of his possession, which the LORD gave to them.) ¹³ Now get going and cross the Wadi Zered.' And so we crossed the Wadi Zered. ¹⁴ "Now from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Wadi Zered was 38 years. All of that generation, the soldiers in the camp, were destroyed just as the LORD swore they would be. ¹⁵ For his hand was against them, that they should perish from the midst of the camp. ¹⁶ "And so all the soldiers among the people died. ¹⁷ "the LORD said to me (Moses): ¹⁸ 'Today, you are about to cross the border of Moab at Ar. ¹⁹ When you come to the Ammonites, don't harass or provoke them to war, for I won't give any part of Ammonite land to you, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their property.' ²⁰ (That also is considered a land of Rephaim. Rephaim lived there in the past, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, ²¹ a people great and numerous and as tall as the Anakites; the LORD destroyed them from before them, and they dispossessed them and settled in place of them, ²² just as he did for the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them and dispossessed them, and then they settled in their place up to this day. ²³ And the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Azzah, the Caphtorites coming out of Caphtor destroyed them, and lived in their place. ²⁴ Rise up, set out and cross over the river Arnon. Behold! I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to possess, and fight with him in battle. ²⁵ Today, I will begin to put your dread and your fear upon the nations under the whole heavens; who shall hear report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you. ²⁶ Then from the waste land of Kedemoth I sent representatives to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, ²⁷ I will pass through your land; I will go by the road, I will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. ²⁸ Sell me food for cash so I can eat and give me water for cash, so I can drink. Just let me pass through on foot ²⁹ as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us. We will keep going until we cross the Jordan River into the land the LORD our God is giving us.' ³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today. ³¹ "Then the LORD said to me, 'See, I've begun to deliver Sihon and his territory over to you. Prepare to take possession of his land.' ³² Then Sihon and all his people came out to meet us for battle at Jahaz. ³³ The LORD our God delivered him to us, so we attacked him, his son, and his whole army. ³⁴ At that time we took all his towns, and gave them over to complete destruction, together with men, women, and children; we had no mercy on any: ³⁵ But the domestic beasts we plundered for ourselves, and the loot of the cities that we had seized. ³⁶ From Aroer on the edge of Arnon Valley and from the town all the way to Gilead, there was no city that was too strong for us the LORD our God delivered them all to us. ³⁷ Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not come near, all the side of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill-country and wherever the LORD our God forbad us.

²⁵ And the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; tomorrow turn and set out for the desert by way of the Red Sea."

⁴ They set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient along the way.

² It takes 11 days to travel from Horeb to Kadesh-barnea via Mount Seir.

⁴⁰ But as for you, prepare to set out for the desert on the way to the Reed Sea.'

¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab.

⁶ The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, You have been long enough in this mountain:

⁷ For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; He has known your walking through this great wilderness; these forty years the LORD your God has been with you and you have lacked nothing.

¹⁴ "Now from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Wadi Zered was 38 years. All of that generation, the soldiers in the camp, were destroyed just as the LORD swore they would be.

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified; the leaders of Moab were seized by trembling; all the dwellers of Canaan were melted.

¹⁴ Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. He said: "This is what your brother Israel says: 'You know all the hardships we have had. ¹⁵ how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers. ¹⁶ When we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the edge of your border. ¹⁷ Please let us go through your land. We will not go through a field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the road of the king; we will not turn aside right or left until we have gone through your territory.'" ¹⁸ Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us lest we will go out to meet you with the sword." ¹⁹ The Israelites said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we and our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet." ²⁰ And he said, You shall not pass through. And Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand. ²¹ Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; and Israel turned away from him.

³ And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many; and Moab was overcome with dread because of the children of Israel. ⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now this assembly is licking up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

¹⁴ So now I will go back to my people: but first let me make clear to you what this people will do to your people in days to come. ¹⁵ He began his discourse by saying: "The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor. The oracle of the man, whose eye is opened, ¹⁶ "The oracle of him who hears the words of God, knows the knowledge of the Most High, and sees the vision of the Almighty. Falling down, yet having his eyes uncovered. ¹⁷ I see him, but not now. I see him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel, and shall strike through the corners of Moab, and crush all the sons of Sheth. ¹⁸ Edom will be a captive; Seir, its enemies, will be a captive, and Israel will be acting courageously.

⁷ You must not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. You must not abhor an Egyptian, because you lived as a foreigner in his land.

¹⁰ "Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you and you will be cut off forever. ¹¹ On the day you stood nearby, on the day strangers took his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you were also like one of them. ¹² But do not look down on your brother in the day of his disaster, and do not rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. Do not speak proudly in the day of distress. ¹³ Do not enter into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity. Do not look down on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither seize their wealth on the day of their calamity.

¹⁶ In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

¹⁵ And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

¹⁵ Be strictly careful, then, how you live, not as unwise but as wise.

¹⁵ so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world

⁵ Behave wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity.

⁸ So Esau made his living-place in the hill-country of Seir Esau is Edom.

⁸ When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he set the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.

⁴ and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.

¹⁰ And now, behold, the sons of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir (whom you would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them and did not destroy them), ¹¹ now behold, they are rewarding us by coming to dispossess us from your possession which you gave us as an inheritance. ¹² Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us. We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

⁵ By my great power and outstretched arm I made the earth, mankind, and the animals that are on the face of the earth, and I give it to whomever I see fit.

²⁵ You will be driven from men. Your dwelling will be with the beasts of the field. You will eat grass like oxen and will be wet with the dew of heaven. Seven times shall pass over you until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.

³² You're to be driven away from people. You're to live with the wild animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like cattle, and seven years will pass you by until you realize that the Most High is sovereign over human kingdoms and grants them to whomever he desires.'

⁵ He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised to give possession of the land to Abraham and his descendants, even though he did not yet have a child.

²⁶ From one man He made every nation of men, to inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.

¹⁹ The Israelites said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we and our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet."

²⁸ Sell me food for cash so I can eat and give me water for cash, so I can drink. Just let me pass through on foot ²⁹ as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us. We will keep going until we cross the Jordan River into the land the LORD our God is giving us.'

¹² In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the prophets.

¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody.

⁷ For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, ⁸ nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and toil, we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you.

² "I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing.

³⁵ The LORD has blessed my master greatly. He has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, and camels and donkeys.

¹² Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. the LORD blessed him.

²⁷ But Laban said to him, "Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you."

⁵ And it happened that from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, the LORD blessed the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house and in the field.

² "Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way these 40 years in the desert, to humble and test you in order to make known what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. ³ He humbled you and allowed you to suffer hunger, and fed you with manna, which you didn't know, neither did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD. ⁴ Your clothing did not wear out on you, and your feet did not swell during these forty years.

⁵ For forty years I have been your guide through the waste land: your clothing has not become old on your backs, or your shoes on your feet.

²¹ Yea, forty years You sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing; their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell.

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take: when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

⁶ for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

⁷ And I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy; for You have seen my affliction; You have known the distresses in my soul;

¹⁷ Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

³⁵ Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered.

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me;

³⁵ They set out from Abronah and camped at Ezion Geber.

¹ These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel in Transjordan in the wilderness, in the Aravah opposite Suph between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Di-zahab.

²⁶ King Solomon also built a fleet of ships at Ezion-Geber which is near Elath on the shore of the Red Sea in the land of Edom.

²² It was he that built Elath, and restored it to Judah, after the king slept with his fathers.

⁶ At that time, Rezin king of Aram recovered Elath for Aram and drove out the Judeans from Elath. The Arameans came to Elath and have lived there until this day.

³⁶ Both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their own father. ³⁷ And the older daughter had a son, and she gave him the name Moab: he is the father of the Moabites to this day.

¹⁵ and the slope of the valleys that extend to the town of Ar and toward the border of Moab.

²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon.

⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now this assembly is licking up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

¹⁷ then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh.

¹⁰ And now, behold, the sons of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir (whom you would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them and did not destroy them),

⁸ Even Assyria joined them to strengthen the descendants of Lot. [Interlude]

⁵ In the fourteenth year Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-Karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-Kiriathaim,

²² They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai the descendants of the Anakites were. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

¹¹ Like the Anakim, they too were accounted as Rephaim, yet the Moabites called them Emim.

²⁸ »The people who live there are strong. The cities have walls and are very large. We even saw the descendants of Anak there.

³³ There we saw the Nephilim (the descendants of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their eyes."

²⁸ "'Where can we go up? Our brothers caused us to lose heart. They said: The people are stronger and taller than we are. The cities are large and the walls go up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there."'

² The Anakim are strong and tall, and you know them. You've heard it said, 'Who can stand up against the Anakim?'

⁶ and the Horites in the hill country of Seir as far as El-paran on the edge of the wilderness.

²⁰ These are the sons of Seir the Horite who were living in that country; Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ²¹ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, the son of Seir, in the land of Edom. ²² And the sons of Lotan: Hori and Heman; and Lotan's sister, Timna. ²³ These were the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ²⁴ Now these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is Anah who found the hot springs in the desert while he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. ²⁵ These are the children of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ These were the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. ²⁷ These the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. ²⁸ These the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These were the Horite chiefs: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ³⁰ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. Such were the Horite chiefs in their order in the land of Seir. ³¹ And these were the kings who reigned in Edom before a king reigned in Israel; ³² Bela, son of Beor reigned in Edom; and the name of his city was Dinhabah. ³³ And Bela died; and Jobab, son of Zerah, from Bozrah reigned in his place. ³⁴ When Jobab died, Husham, from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. ³⁵ And Husham died, and Hadad, son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the field of Moab reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith. ³⁶ When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. ³⁷ And Samlah died; and Saul of Rehoboth on the river reigned in his stead. ³⁸ When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. ³⁹ And Baalhanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab. ⁴⁰ These are the names of the chiefs of Esau in the order of their families and their places: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, ⁴¹ Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, ⁴² Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, ⁴³ chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession. This is Esau, the father of the Edomites.

²¹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, ²² "Let us go through your country. We will not go through any of your fields or vineyards or drink any of the water from your wells. We will stay on the king's highway until we have passed through your territory." ²³ Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Sihon gathered all his troops and came out into the desert to attack Israel. When Sihon's troops came to Jahaz, they fought against Israel. ²⁴ Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was fortified. ²⁵ Israel took all these cities. Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. ²⁶ For Heshbon was the town of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had made war against an earlier king of Moab and taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon. ²⁷ Therefore the poets say, Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established. ²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh! He has given his sons as fugitives and his daughters into captivity, to Sihon king of the Amorites. ³⁰ And we shot at them. Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. And we have laid waste as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba." ³¹ So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. ³² And Moses sent to spy out Ya’zer, and they captured the villages thereof, and drove out the Emorites that were there. ³³ Then they turned and went up by the way of the Bashan, and Og king of the Bashan and all his people went out to meet them for battle at Edrei. ³⁴ the LORD said to Moses: "Do not fear him for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land. You will do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon." ³⁵ So they struck him, with his sons and all his people, until there were no survivors; and they possessed his land.

²² just as he did for the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them and dispossessed them, and then they settled in their place up to this day.

³² Then Sihon and all his people came out to meet us for battle at Jahaz.

³⁸ The sons of Seir: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. ³⁹ The sons of Lotan: Hori and Homam. Timna was Lotan's sister. ⁴⁰ The sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam. The sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. ⁴¹ The son of Anah: Dishon. The sons of Dishon: Hamran, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. ⁴² The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan. His city was named Pau, and his wife's name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab. ⁵¹ Hadad also died. The chiefs of Edom were: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, ⁵² Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, ⁵³ Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, ⁵⁴ Magdiel and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom.

²³ Then they reached the valley of Eshcol, where they had cut a branch with a cluster of grapes and carried it on a pole between two men, also pomegranates and figs.

¹² From there they moved, and encamped in the valley of Zared.

²⁶ They returned to Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation of Israel at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. They gave their report and showed them the fruit from the land.

²⁸ Say to them, 'Surely as I live,' declares the LORD, 'just as you spoke in my hearing, so I will do to you; ²⁹ in this desert your corpses will fall, and all your counted ones, according to all your number, from twenty years old and above who grumbled against me. ³⁰ none of you, shall enter into the land, as to which I uplifted my hand to give you an abode therein,—save Caleb son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun: ³¹ But your little children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them, and they will know the land that you rejected. ³² But, your own dead bodies, shall fall in this desert; ³³ "'Your children will be shepherds in the desert for forty years. They will suffer for your unfaithfulness until the last of your bodies lies dead in the desert. ³⁴ "'You explored the land for forty days. So for forty years, one year for each day, you will suffer for your sins and know what it means for me to be against you.' ³⁵ I, the LORD, have spoken; I will surely do this to all this evil community who has banded together against me. In this desert they will come to an end, and there they will die."

⁶⁴ And among these there was not a man of those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the Israelites in the desert of Sinai. ⁶⁵ for the LORD had said to them that they would die, yea die in the wilderness. And not a man of them was left save Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

¹¹ If these men, that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land, which I promised with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: because they would not follow me,

¹⁹ Then we went on from Horeb, through all that great and cruel waste which you saw, on our way to the hill-country of the Amorites, as the Lord gave us orders; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

³⁴ »the LORD heard what you said. He was angry and solemnly swore: ³⁵ "'Not one man of this evil generation will see that good land, which I swore to give your fathers,

⁴⁶ And you dwelt in Kadesh many days, as many days as you dwelt there.

³ You turn men back into dust and say: "Return, O sons of men!"

⁹ For all our days pass away in Your wrath; we finish our years like a murmur.

¹¹ So I swore by an oath in my anger, Shall they enter into my rest, no.

²⁶ So he lifted up his hand unto them, that he would let them fall in the desert;

¹⁵ Yet even l lifted up my hand to them. in the desert,— That I would not b1ing them into the land which I had given to them flowing with milk and honey, The beauty, it was. of all lands:

⁵ For all that, God was not pleased with most of them—their carcasses were scattered around the desert!

⁸ do not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion, in the time of testing in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tried Me by testing Me, and for forty years saw My works. ¹⁰ Therefore I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts always go astray, and they have not known My ways.’ ¹¹ So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’” ¹² See to it, my brothers, that no one of you has a wicked, unbelieving heart, that turns away from the ever-living God, ¹³ But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. ¹⁴ We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end the assurance we had at first. ¹⁵ As it has been said: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion.” ¹⁶ Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? ¹⁷ And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did He swear that they would never enter His rest? Was it not to those who disobeyed? ¹⁹ So we see that they were not able to enter in because of their unbelief.

⁵ Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe.

¹⁵ Wherever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for harm, as the LORD had spoken, and as the LORD had sworn to them: and they were in great distress.

⁶ But the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of Ashdod and those nearby, and He destroyed them, afflicting them with tumours.

⁹ After they moved it, the LORD moved against the town, causing a very great panic. He struck the men of the town, from young to old with tumors of the groin.

¹¹ And they sent and gathered all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it kill us not, and our people. For there was deadly alarm throughout the city: the hand of God was very heavy there;

¹³ So the Philistines were overcome, and did not come into the country of Israel again: and all the days of Samuel the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines.

⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy on me. My strength was sapped in the heat of summer. Selah.

³³ And he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror.

⁷ Indeed, we are consumed by your anger and terrified by your wrath. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹ For all our days pass away in Your wrath; we finish our years like a murmur.

¹⁴ When you see it, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like new grass. The power of the LORD will be made known to his servants, but he will condemn his enemies.

²³ Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Sihon gathered all his troops and came out into the desert to attack Israel. When Sihon's troops came to Jahaz, they fought against Israel.

¹ Surely in a night Ar of Moab is devastated and ruined. Certainly in a night Kir of Moab is devastated and ruined.

³⁶ Both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their own father. ³⁷ And the older daughter had a son, and she gave him the name Moab: he is the father of the Moabites to this day. ³⁸ The younger daughter also had a son, whom she named Ben-ammi. He was the ancestor of the present-day Ammonites.

⁹ "Then the LORD said to me, 'Don't harass Moab or provoke them to war, because I won't give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their property.

¹³ The king of Ammon answered Jephthah's messengers: "Because Israel took away our land when they came out of Egypt. They took land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River and the Jordan River. Now you must give it back peacefully." ¹⁴ Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of Ammon. ¹⁵ and said to him, This is what Jephthah says: Israel didn't take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the Ammonites, ¹⁶ But when they came up out of Egypt, he walked through the desert to the Red Sea, and came into Cades. ¹⁷ then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh. ¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab. ¹⁹ And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorite, king of Hesbron, and Israel said to him, Let us pass through your land to our place. ²⁰ But Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his territory, so he assembled his entire army, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. ²¹ And the LORD, the God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, who lived in that country. ²² And all the coasts thereof from the Arnon to the Jaboc, and from the wilderness to the Jordan. ²³ So now the LORD, the God of Israel has driven out the Amorites from before His people Israel, and should you take it over? ²⁴ Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? Whoever the LORD our God has driven out before us, we will possess it. ²⁵ "'Do you think you are better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever challenge Israel or fight with them? ²⁶ "'Israel has occupied Heshbon and Aroer for three hundred years, and the towns around them, and all the cities on the banks of the Arnon River. Why did you not retake them during that time? ²⁷ "'I have not done you any wrong. You are doing wrong to me by making war on me. the LORD is the judge. He will decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.'"

¹⁰ (The Emim dwelt in it beforetime, a people great and numerous, and as tall as the Anakim. ¹¹ Like the Anakim, they too were accounted as Rephaim, yet the Moabites called them Emim.

¹¹ »Of the Rephaim only King Og of Bashan was left. His bed was made of iron and was more than thirteen feet long and six feet wide. It is still in the Ammonite city of Rabbah.

²⁴ Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? Whoever the LORD our God has driven out before us, we will possess it.

⁷ And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son's son, until the time of his own land comes. And then many nations and great kings shall enslave him. ⁸ If a nation and kingdom does not serve him King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and does not put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I'll judge that nation with the sword, with famine, and with plague," declares the LORD, "until I've completely destroyed it by his hand.

¹⁰ "They scoff at kings, and princes are derision to them. They laugh at every stronghold, for they build earthen ramps and capture them. ¹¹ Then he sweeps by like the wind, and goes on. He is indeed guilty, whose strength is his god."

²⁰ These are the sons of Seir the Horite who were living in that country; Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ²¹ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, the son of Seir, in the land of Edom. ²² And the sons of Lotan: Hori and Heman; and Lotan's sister, Timna. ²³ These were the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ²⁴ Now these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is Anah who found the hot springs in the desert while he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. ²⁵ These are the children of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ These were the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. ²⁷ These the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. ²⁸ These the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These were the Horite chiefs: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ³⁰ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. Such were the Horite chiefs in their order in the land of Seir.

¹² The Horites also lived in Seir before, but the children of Esau succeeded them; and they destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place; as Israel did to the land of his possession, which the LORD gave to them.)

³⁸ The sons of Seir: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. ³⁹ The sons of Lotan: Hori and Homam. Timna was Lotan's sister. ⁴⁰ The sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam. The sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. ⁴¹ The son of Anah: Dishon. The sons of Dishon: Hamran, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. ⁴² The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan. The sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.

¹⁴ Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from whom the Philistines came), and Caphtorim.

³ from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites, Ashdodites, Ashkelonites, Gittites, Ekronites, and the Avvim.

²⁴ For he had dominion on this side of the river, and he was at peace on all sides round about.

²⁰ and all the mixed people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, all the kings of the Philistines, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;

⁴ for the day is coming to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains. For the LORD is destroying the Philistines, the remnant of the coastlands of Caphtor.

⁷ "Are you not like the Cushites to me, O people of Israel?" declares the LORD. "Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt and the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir?

⁴ "For Gaza will be forsaken, and Ashkelon deserted {— } Ashdod will be emptied at high noon; even Ekron will be uprooted.

⁵ "Ashkelon will see it and fear! Gaza will be pained and Ekron will be put to shame. The king will perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon will not be inhabited.

¹³ They moved again and camped on the north side of the Arnon River, in the desert that extends into Amorite territory. The Arnon was the border between the Moabites and the Amorites. ¹⁴ As it says in the book of the Wars of the Lord, Vaheb in Suphah, and the valley of the Amon; ¹⁵ and the slope of the valleys that extend to the town of Ar and toward the border of Moab.

³⁶ From Aroer on the edge of Arnon Valley and from the town all the way to Gilead, there was no city that was too strong for us the LORD our God delivered them all to us.

¹⁶ At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city!

¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab. ¹⁹ And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorite, king of Hesbron, and Israel said to him, Let us pass through your land to our place. ²⁰ But Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his territory, so he assembled his entire army, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. ²¹ And the LORD, the God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, who lived in that country.

²³ Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: »the LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. He has appointed me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all his people, may the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up!«

² "Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, 'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

²⁰ "'I have given him the land of Egypt for the labor he performed, because they acted for me,' declares the Sovereign LORD.

³⁸ »He gave the children of men, the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens to your hand. He made you the ruler over them all! You are the head of gold.

¹⁷ This order is announced by the observers, and the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over human kingdoms and grants them to whomever he desires, and he places the least important of men over them.'

¹⁴ The nations heard, and were afraid. Pangs came upon the Philistines. ¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified; the leaders of Moab were seized by trembling; all the dwellers of Canaan were melted. ¹⁶ Terror and dread falls on them. By the greatness of your arm they are as still as a stone, until your people pass over, the LORD, until the people you have purchased pass over.

²⁷ I will send my terror before you, and will confuse all the people to whom you come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you.

²⁵ No one will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God will instill terror and fear of you throughout the entire land wherever you go, just as he promised you.

¹⁰ And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall fear you.

⁹ and said to the men, "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of your presence. ¹⁰ For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the reed sea before you, when you came out of Egypt, and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites on the other side Jordan; Sihon, and Og, which ye utterly destroyed. ¹¹ When we heard these reports, we all became terrified and discouraged because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. ¹² Now therefore, I pray you, swear to me by the LORD, since I have showed you kindness, that you will also show kindness to my father's house, and give me a true token:

²⁴ They answered Joshua, and said, "Because your servants were certainly told how the LORD your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

⁶ The LORD had made the Assyrian army hear the sounds of chariots, horses, and a large army, so they told one another, "Look! The king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and the Egyptians to come attack us!" ⁷ And they rose up and fled in the dusk, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, the camp as it was, and fled for their life.

³⁸ Egypt was glad when they departed, because the fear of them had fallen upon them.

⁹ "Jerusalem will be my source of joy, praise, and honor. All the nations on earth will hear about all the blessings that I will give to Jerusalem. They will be afraid and tremble because of all the prosperity that I will provide for it.'"

⁹ I will make some who belong to that synagogue of Satan and claim to be Jews when they are not so, but are lying—I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and learn that I loved you.

¹⁰ When you come to a town, before attacking it, make an offer of peace. ¹¹ "If they open the gates and surrender, they will all become your slaves and do forced labor for you.

¹⁸ Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,

³⁰ So letters were sent to all the Jews, to the 127 provinces in Xerxes' kingdom, in words of peace and truth,

¹² As you enter the house, give it your greeting. ¹³ If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. ¹⁴ And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. ¹⁵ Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

⁵ And whenever you go into a house, first say, Peace be to this house. ⁶ If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you.

¹⁰ But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ¹¹ ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off as a testimony against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’ ¹² I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

²¹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, ²² "Let us go through your country. We will not go through any of your fields or vineyards or drink any of the water from your wells. We will stay on the king's highway until we have passed through your territory." ²³ Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Sihon gathered all his troops and came out into the desert to attack Israel. When Sihon's troops came to Jahaz, they fought against Israel.

⁶ "'You must pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.

¹⁹ And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorite, king of Hesbron, and Israel said to him, Let us pass through your land to our place.

¹² "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days can be long on the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

¹⁸ Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us lest we will go out to meet you with the sword."

¹ And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them, that you may live and go in and possess the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you.

²¹ "And the LORD was angry with me because of you, and he swore that I would not cross the Jordan and that I would not go to the good land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

⁴⁰ You shall keep his statutes and his commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the LORD your God gives you for all time.

¹⁶ Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that your days may be made longer, and that it may go well with you in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

⁶ Know then that it is not because of your own righteousness that the LORD your Elohim is giving to you this good land to tenant it, for you are a stiff-necked people.

³ No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their people to the tenth generation may come into the meeting of the Lord's people: ⁴ Because they gave you no bread or water on your way, when you came out of Egypt: and they got Balaam, the son of Peor, from Pethor in Aram-naharaim to put curses on you.

¹⁵ You must have honest weights and measuring devices, so you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is about to give you,

¹¹ "Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people: 'Prepare your provisions; ⌊in⌋ three days you are to cross the Jordan to go possess the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.'" ¹² To the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, ¹³ "Remember the word Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you: 'the LORD your God has given you rest, and has given you this land.'" ¹⁴ Your wives, your little ones and your livestock shall live in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but all your mighty men of valour shall pass over before your brothers, armed, and shall help them ¹⁵ until the LORD has given your brothers rest, as he has given you, and they have also possessed the land which the LORD your God gives them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession, and possess it, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.'"

¹⁷ then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh. ¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab.

²¹ the LORD said to Moses: "When you go back to Egypt see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders that I have put in your power. I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go."

¹⁰ Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh. Yet the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart. He did not let the sons of Israel go out of his land.

¹⁹ so that there was not a city which Israel did not take. They took them all by battle. ²⁰ For it was the LORD that hardened their hearts, to meet Israel in war in order to utterly destroy them without mercy, that they would destroy them just as the LORD commanded Moses.

²⁰ But Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his territory, so he assembled his entire army, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

⁴ I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your forehead bronze.

¹⁷ For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” ¹⁸ Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy, and He hardens whom He wants to harden. ¹⁹ One of you will say to me, “Then why does God still find fault? For who can resist His will?” ²⁰ But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” ²¹ Does not the potter have the right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for noble use, and another for common use? ²² What if God, intending to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great patience the vessels of His wrath, prepared for destruction? ²³ What if He did this to make the riches of His glory known to the vessels of His mercy, whom He prepared in advance for glory—

⁸ "I have given you this land. Go in and possess the land the LORD pledged to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and to their descendants (offspring) after them.'

²⁴ Rise up, set out and cross over the river Arnon. Behold! I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to possess, and fight with him in battle.

²³ Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Sihon gathered all his troops and came out into the desert to attack Israel. When Sihon's troops came to Jahaz, they fought against Israel. ²⁴ Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was fortified. ²⁵ Israel took all these cities. Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. ²⁶ For Heshbon was the town of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had made war against an earlier king of Moab and taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon. ²⁷ Therefore the poets say, Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established. ²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh! He has given his sons as fugitives and his daughters into captivity, to Sihon king of the Amorites. ³⁰ And we shot at them. Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. And we have laid waste as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba."

²² And you gave them kingdoms and nations and allotted them a portion. They took into possession the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan.

⁷ I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.

¹¹ Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan,

¹⁹ Sihon king of the Amorites; for His grace endures forever;

²⁰ And blessed be God Most High who delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave to him a tenth of everything.

²⁴ Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was fortified.

² "the LORD said to me: 'Do not be afraid of him. I will hand him, all his army, and his land, over to you. Do to him what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.' ³ "So the LORD our God also delivered into our control Og king of Bashan, along with his whole army. We attacked him until there were no survivors.

² and when the LORD your God delivers them up before you and you defeat them, then you must utterly destroy them. You must make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them,

¹⁶ But of the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, you must save alive nothing that breathes;

⁷ When you came to this place, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, came out to make war against us and we overcame them: ⁸ "We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites.

³⁰ And again the Lord gave it and its king into the hands of Israel; and he put it and every person in it to the sword, till their destruction was complete; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. ³¹ Then Joshua and all Israel with him went on from Libnah to Lachish, and took up their position against it and made an attack on it, ³² And the Lord gave Lachish into the hands of Israel, and on the second day he took it, putting it and every person in it to the sword without mercy, as he had done to Libnah. ³³ Then Horam, king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish, and Joshua smote him and his people until none of them were left. ³⁴ And Joshua and all Israel with him went on from Lachish to Eglon: and they took up their position against it and made an attack on it; ³⁵ And took it the same day: and put to the sword all the souls that were in it, according to all that he had done to Lachis. ³⁶ And Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron, and made an attack on it; ³⁷ and captured it, and struck it by the mouth of the sword, and its king, and all its cities, and every person in it; he did not leave a survivor, according to all that he did to Eglon, and destroyed it and every person in it. ³⁸ And Joshua and all Israel with him went on to make an attack on Debir; ³⁹ And he took it, with its king and all its towns: and he put them to the sword, giving every person in it to the curse; all were put to death: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king. ⁴⁰ So Joshua struck all the land, the hill country, and the Negev, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded. ⁴¹ Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen up to Gibeon; ⁴² All these kings and their land Joshua took at one time, because the LORD the God of Israel fought for Israel.

⁴⁴ the LORD gave them rest on every side, according to all that he had sworn to their ancestors, and nobody from all their enemies withstood them, for the LORD had given all their enemies into their hand.

⁴ And Judah went up, and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated ten thousand men at Bezek.

² And the Lord said to Gideon, The people with thee are too numerous for me to deliver Madiam into their hands. Perhaps they may boast against me saying, My own hand hath saved me.

²⁸ However, no devoted thing that a man shall devote to the LORD of all that he has, either of man or animal, or of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed. Every devoted thing is most holy to the LORD. ²⁹ `No devoted thing, which is devoted of man, is ransomed, it is surely put to death.

² Then Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD and said, "If thou wilt give this people into our hands, we will destroy their cities." ³ the LORD heard them and helped them conquer the Canaanites. The Israelites completely destroyed them and their cities, and named the place Hormah.

⁶ And we utterly destroyed them, as we had done to Sehon the king of Hesebon, destroying every city, men and women and children:

²⁶ "Do not bring an abomination into your house. You must utterly detest it and you must utterly abhor it, for it is something banned."

¹⁶ But of the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, you must save alive nothing that breathes; ¹⁷ you must utterly destroy them: the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, as the LORD your God has commanded you, ¹⁸ "Otherwise, they will teach you to do all the disgusting things they do for their gods. You will sin against the LORD your God.

¹¹ "Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things and put them in their own possessions.

²⁵ Twelve thousand men and women of Ai were killed that day. ²⁶ And Joshua did not draw back his hand with which he stretched out the javelin until he had destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

¹⁴ And all the spoil of these cities and the beasts, the sons of israel took for themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, without leaving any that breathed.

³ Now, go and attack Amalek. Completely destroy all that they have. Don't spare them, but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, both ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"

⁸ He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people. ⁹ But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and the cattle, and the fat ones and the lambs, and all that was good, and wouldnʼt utterly destroy them; but everything that was despised and rejected, that they utterly destroyed.

⁹ The Israelites took the Midianite women and children as prisoners of war. They also took all their animals, their livestock, and their valuables as loot. ¹⁰ They burned the cities where the Midianites lived and all their settlements. ¹¹ They took everything as loot including all the people and animals,

¹⁴ "You may take the women, the children, the livestock, and everything else in the city for yourselves. You may use everything that belongs to your enemies. the LORD has given it to you.

²⁷ Only, Israel seized for themselves the livestock, and the plunder of the city, according to the word of the LORD which He commanded Joshua.

¹² "Of the land that we captured at that time, I've given its towns to the Reubenites and the Gaddites from Aroer near the Wadi Arnon to half of the hill country of Gilead.

⁴⁸ This land extended from the town of Aroer, on the edge of the Arnon River, north to Mount Sirion, that is, Mount Hermon.

⁵ No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you.

² Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the Arnon River, and from the middle of the river, and from half Gilead, to the Jabbok River, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

¹⁹ Stand by the road and watch, O inhabitant of Aroer. Ask the man who is fleeing and the woman who is escaping, say, 'What has happened?'

³¹ What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

²² That night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

¹⁹ When you come to the Ammonites, don't harass or provoke them to war, for I won't give any part of Ammonite land to you, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their property.'

¹⁶ And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave from Gilead even to the valley of Arnon, the middle of the valley and its border; even to the Jabbok River, which is the border of the sons of Ammon;

¹⁵ and said to him, This is what Jephthah says: Israel didn't take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the Ammonites,
