¹¹ And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar wood, and carpenters, and stone masons; and they built a house for David.

² the king said to Nathan the prophet, See now, I live in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within curtains.

¹ Now Hiram, king of Tyre, hearing that Solomon had been made king in place of his father, sent his servants to him; for Hiram had ever been a friend to David. ² Solomon sent this message to Hiram:

⁸ Then Hiram sent Solomon the following message: "I received your message. I am ready to do what you ask. I will provide the cedars and the pine trees. ⁹ My servants will bring it down from Lebanon to the sea. And I will make floats for them in the sea to go to the place that you tell me. And I will spread them out there; and you shall take them up. And you shall do what I desire, to give food for my house. ¹⁰ So Hiram supplied Solomon with all the cedar and pine logs he wanted.

¹⁸ And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Giblites cut out and prepared the timber and the stones to build the house.

¹ Then was Solomon thirteen years building a house for himself. ² and he builds the house of the forest of Lebanon, a hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high; on four rows of cedar pillars with cedar beams on the pillars; ³ And it was covered with cedar above the beams, that lay on forty-five pillars, fifteen in a row. ⁴ Set one against another, ⁵ All the doorways and doorposts had rectangular frames, with the doorways facing each other in three tiers. ⁶ The hall of pillars he made fifty cubits in its length and thirty cubits in its width, and a porch was in front of them, with pillars and an overhang in front of them. ⁷ He constructed the Judgment Hall for the throneroom where he would be ruling, paneling it with cedar from floor to ceiling. ⁸ As to his house where he lived, the other court was within the porch, as this work was. Solomon also made a house for Pharaoh's daughter whom he had taken, like this porch. ⁹ From the foundation to the roof, all these buildings, including the large courtyard, were built with high-grade stone blocks. The stone blocks were cut to size and trimmed with saws on their inner and outer faces. ¹⁰ And the foundations were of costly stones, great stones of ten cubits or eight cubits. ¹¹ Overhead were highly priced stones cut to measure, and cedar-wood. ¹² The great court around had three courses of cut stone, and a course of cedar beams; like as the inner court of the house of the LORD, and the porch of the house.

⁴ I made me great works, I built me houses, and planted vineyards, ⁵ I made for myself gardens and parks, and I planted all sorts of fruit trees in them. ⁶ I made water pools from which to water the young trees. ⁷ I acquired male and female servants, and they gave birth to sons and daughters in my house. I had great wealth of herds and flocks, more than all who were in Jerusalem before me. ⁸ I also gathered silver and gold to myself, and the treasure of kings and of the provinces. I got men singers and women singers for myself, and the delights of the sons of men, a wife and very many wives. ⁹ And I became great and increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom stayed with me. ¹⁰ I neither withheld anything from my eyes that they desired, nor did I deprive any pleasure from my heart. My heart rejoiced in all my toil, for this was my reward from all my toil. ¹¹ Yet when I faced all my deeds that my hands had done, And the toil that I had toiled in doing them, Behold, the whole was vanity and a grazing on wind, And there was nothing of advantage under the sun."

¹⁴ who says, I will build myself a wide house and large upper rooms. And he cuts out windows for it and covers with cedar, and paints with vermilion. ¹⁵ Do you become a king because you are competing in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. ¹⁶ He pled the cause of the afflicted and needy. Then it was well. "Is that not what it means to know me?" Says the LORD.
