2 Samuel 19 Cross References - VIN

1 Joab was told, “Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.” 2 And the victory that day was [turned] into mourning for all the people; for the people heard say that day, The king is grieved for his son. 3 So men snuck into the city that day like men do who are ashamed after they've run away from a battle. 4 But the king, covering his face, gave a great cry, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son! 5 Joab went up to the palace and rebuked the king: "Today you've humiliated your entire army who just saved your life, the lives of your sons and daughters, and the lives of your wives and mistresses! 6 You love those who hate you and hate those who love you! You've made it abundantly clear today that your officers and the men under them mean nothing to you! I've learned today that you would rather have Absalom alive today and all the rest of us dead! 7 And now rise up; go out and speak to the heart of your servants. For I have sworn by the LORD that if you do not go out, not a man shall remain with you tonight. And this would be worse for you than all the evil that has come on you from your youth until now. 8 So the king got up and took his seat in the gateway. When the army was informed "The king is sitting in the gateway!" they all gathered together in his presence. Meanwhile, the Israelites had run away back to their own homes. 9 Throughout the tribes of Israel, everyone was quarreling with one another: "The king delivered us from the domination of our enemies…" "He's the one who rescued us from Philistine control…" "Now he's fleeing the country because of Absalom…!" 10 And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. And now why do you not speak a word about bringing the king back? 11 So King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests: "Ask the elders of Judah, 'Why are you the last to bring the king back to his palace, considering that what's being reported throughout all of Israel has come to the king at his palace? 12 "You are my relatives, my own flesh and blood. Why should you be the last to reinstate the king?" 13 And say to Amasa, Are you not my bone and my flesh? May God's punishment be on me, if I do not make you chief of the army before me at all times in place of Joab! 14 So he turned the heart of all the men of Judah as one man, and they sent word to the king, "Return, you and all your servants." 15 Then the king returned, and came as far as the Jordan,—and, Judah, came to Gilgal, to go and meet the king, to escort the king over the Jordan. 16 And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet King David. 17 And with him a thousand men of Benjamin, and Ziba, the servant of Saul, with his fifteen sons and twenty servants, came rushing to Jordan before the king, 18 And they crossed the ford to bring over the king's household, and to do what he thought good. Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he had come over the Jordan. 19 and addressed him, "May your majesty not hold me guilty. Don't remember how your servant did wrong the day your majesty the king left Jerusalem. May the king not let it burden his heart, 20 For your servant knows that I have sinned; look, I have come this day as the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king." 21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered, “Shouldn't Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD's anointed?” 22 Then David said, "What is it to me or to you, sons of Zeruiah, that you should be an adversary today? Should anyone be put to death in Israel? Do I not know today that I am king over Israel?" 23 And the king said to Shimei, You shall not die. And the king swore to him. 24 Meanwhile, Saul's grandson Mephibosheth also went out to greet the king. He had not taken care of his feet, trimmed his mustache, or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely. 25 When he arrived from Jerusalem to greet the king, the king asked him, "So why didn't you come with me, Mephibosheth?" 26 He replied, "Well, your majesty, since your servant is lame, I told myself, 'I'll have my donkey saddled and I'll ride on it so I can leave with the king.' But my servant Ziba deceived me 27 And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in your eyes. 28 For all of my father's house were as dead men before my lord the king; yet you have set your servant among them that eat at your table; and what right have I any longer even to cry to the king? 29 And the king said to him, What need of more words. I have said, Thou and Siba shall divide the fields. 30 Then Mephibosheth said to the king, "Let him take the whole thing, since my lord the king has come safely to his house." 31 Barzillai the Gileadite also had come down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan River with the king and to see him on his way from there. 32 And Barzillai was a very old man, eighty years old; and he had provided for the king when he dwelt in Mahanaim; for he was a very great man. 33 So the king invited Barzillai, "Cross the Jordan River with me, live with me in Jerusalem, and I'll provide for you there." 34 And Barzillai said to the king, How much of my life is still before me, for me to go up to Jerusalem with the king? 35 I am eighty years old today. Can I discern between good and bad? Or can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Or can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be a burden any longer to my lord the king? 36 Your servant will cross the Jordan River with the king for a short distance, but why should the king offer me this reward? 37 Please let your servant return, and let me die in my city in the tomb of my father and my mother. Here is your servant Kimham; let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him that which is good in your eyes." 38 The king said, "Let Kimham go over with me, and I will do for him the good in your eyes, and all that you desire of me I will do for you." 39 Now all the people had crossed the Jordan, and when the king had crossed, he kissed Berzelli, and bade him farewell, and he returned to his place; 40 As the king crossed over the Jordan River to Gilgal, Chimham accompanied him, as did all the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel. 41 Suddenly, all the men of Israel were coming to the king. They said to the king, "Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen away and brought the king and his household over the Jordan, with all the men of David?" 42 Everybody from Judah shouted to the men from Israel, "We did this because the king is closely related to us. So why are you angry about this? Have we lived off the king's expense? Have we appropriated anything for ourselves?" 43 The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, "We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more claim to David than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?" The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

I warned you, saying, 'On the day you go out and you go anywhere whatsoever, know for certain that you will surely die.' And you said to me, 'The word is good; I accept.' 43 Why then have you not kept the oath of the Lord and the order which I gave you? 44 The king said moreover to Shimei, “You know in your heart all the wickedness that you did to David my father. Therefore the LORD will return your wickedness on your own head. 45 But king Solomon will be blessed, and David's throne will be established before the LORD forever.” 46 Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and fell upon him, and he died. James 3:2-10

2 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body. 3 When we put bits into the mouths of the horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal. 4 Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot is inclined. 5 So also the tongue is a small member and makes great boasts. Behold, how great a forest is set on fire by a little spark! 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be!

James 4:1-5

1 What causes conflicts and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from the passions at war within you? 2 You crave what you do not have. You kill and covet, but are unable to obtain it. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander it on your pleasures. 4 You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think the Scripture says without reason that the Spirit He caused to dwell in us yearns with envy?
