¹² Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you have built beautiful houses and lived in them, ¹³ and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; ¹⁴ then your heart might be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;

¹⁷ Say not then, in your hearts, My power and the strength of my hands have got me this wealth.

⁶ "Is this how you repay the LORD, you foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father and creator, who made you and formed you?

¹ Again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, "Go, number Israel and Judah."

¹⁰ And David's heart killed him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the LORD, I have sinned greatly in what I have done, but now, O LORD, I beseech you, put away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly. ¹¹ Before David arose the next morning, the word of the LORD came to Gad, David's seer: ¹² "Go tell David: 'This is what the LORD says: "I offer you three choices. Choose the one you want me to do to you."'" ¹³ So Gad went to David and asked him, "Shall seven years of famine come to your land, or three months of reversals while you flee from your enemies as they pursue you, or three days of pestilence in your land? Decide right now what I am to answer to the one who sent me." ¹⁴ And David said to Gad, I am in great distress. Let us fall now into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great. And do not let me fall into the hand of man. ¹⁵ So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and seventy thousand men died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba. ¹⁶ As the angel was stretching out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD was grieved because of the calamity, so he told the angel who was afflicting the people, "Enough! Stay your hand!" So the angel of the Lord remained near the threshing floor that belonged to Araunah the Jebusite. ¹⁷ When David saw the angel who had been attacking the people, he said to the LORD, "Look, I'm the one who has sinned! I did the evil. These are only sheep! What did they do? Please, let your hand fall on me and on my household!"

¹⁰ You just defeated Edom and you're arrogant. Bask in your victory and stay home. Why incite trouble so that you yes, you! fall, along with Judah with you?"

¹³ Hezekiah listened to them, and showed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, the house of his armour and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah didn't show them.

And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. ¹⁶ David looked up and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, with a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces. ¹⁷ And David said to God, Did not I command to number the people? I am the one who has sinned and done evil indeed. But these sheep, what have they done? I pray You, let Your hand be on me, O LORD my God, and on my father's house, but not on Your people, that they should be plagued.

² Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, "Should you help the wicked, and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, wrath is on you from before the LORD.

¹⁸ They abandoned the LORD's temple and the God of their fathers, and they served Asherim and idols. As a result this guilt of theirs resulted in wrath coming upon Judah and Jerusalem.

¹⁹ You say to yourself that you have struck Edom; and your heart lifts you up to boast. Now stay at home. Why should you meddle with trouble, that you should fall, even you, and Judah with you?'"

¹⁶ But when he became strong his heart was lifted up to [his] downfall; and he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

³¹ When the leaders of Babylon sent ambassadors to ask him about the miraculous sign that had happened in the land, God left him. God did this to test him, to find out everything that was in Hezekiah's heart.

¹² How can I repay the LORD for all the good that he has done for me? ¹³ I will lift up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.

² "Son of man, tell the ruler of Tyre: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'"In your arrogance you say, 'I am a god (strong deity). I sit on God's throne in the sea.' But you are only human and not a god, although you think you are a god. (2 Thes 2:4)

⁵ By thy great skill and thy traffic thou hast increased thy wealth; and with thy wealth thy heart is elated;

¹⁷ Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you ruined your wisdom because of your splendor. I threw you on the ground before kings; I have exposed you for viewing.

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

²³ You've exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. You've had the vessels from his temple brought into your presence. And you, your officials, and your wives and mistresses drank wine from them. You praised gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which can't see, hear, or demonstrate knowledge. But you didn't honor God, who holds in his power your very life and all your ways.

² Take words with you, and return to the LORD. Tell him, "Forgive all our sins, and accept that which is good, and we will offer the fruit of our lips.

⁴ Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith.

¹⁷ Jesus said, Were not ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? ¹⁸ Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"

⁷ And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me.

⁶ He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same condemnation as the devil.

⁵ Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,
