⁵ He gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them: "Go to the cities of Judah, and collect money throughout Israel to repair the Temple of your God every year. Do it immediately!" But the Levites did not do it immediately.

⁴ Jehoash said to the priests: »All the money of the holy things, which comes into the house of the LORD, the amount fixed for every man's payment, and all the money given by any man freely by motivation of his heart, ⁵ let the priests take it to them, each man from his donor; and they shall repair the damage to the house, wherever any damage is found.” ⁶ But, in the twenty third year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house. ⁷ Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and for the other priests, and said to them, Why don't you repair the breaches of the house? Now therefore take no more money from your treasurers, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.

² He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.

³ In the first month of his first year as king, he opened the doors of the LORD’s temple and repaired them.

⁸ And, in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purified the land and the house, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the ruler of the city and Joah son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God. ⁹ And they came to Hilkiah the high priest and gave the money that was brought for the house of God, which the Levites, the guardians of the threshold, had gathered from the hand of Manasseh, Ephraim, and from the whole remnant of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
