⁵ and they said to him, Look, you are old and your sons don't walk in your ways; now appoint a king to judge us like all the nations.

⁹ Because from the top of the rocks I see him, from hilltops I watch him. Behold, a people who dwell alone, they do not consider themselves among the nations.

¹⁴ When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving to you, and have possessed it, and settled in it; and you shall say, Let me set a king over me like all the nations around me, ¹⁵ you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses. It will be one from among your countrymen. You may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman.

⁶ Samuel was displeased when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." So Samuel prayed to the LORD. ⁷ The LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to the people in all that they say to you. In fact, it's not you they have rejected, but rather they have rejected me from being their king. ⁸ As they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, in forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they also do to you.

¹⁹ But the people refused to listen to Samuel. They said: "We want a king! ²⁰ and we will be like all other nations. And our king shall judge us, and go out before us and fight our battles."

¹⁷ Isn't it wheat harvest today? I will call to the LORD to send thunder and rain, and you shall know and see that your wickedness is great which you have done in the eyes of the LORD, in asking for a king.

¹⁰ Where is your king now, that he may save you in all your cities? And your judges, of whom you said, 'Give me a king and princes?' ¹¹ I gave you a king in my anger, and I took him in my wrath.

²¹ Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
