¹¹ He said, This is what the king who shall reign over you will do: he will take your sons and appoint them to serve with his chariots and to be his horsemen, and they will run before his chariots;

¹⁴ When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving to you, and have possessed it, and settled in it; and you shall say, Let me set a king over me like all the nations around me, ¹⁵ you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses. It will be one from among your countrymen. You may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman. ¹⁶ Only he must not amass horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt to obtain more horses. For the LORD said you must never return that way again. ¹⁷ "He must not take many wives or his heart will turn astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. ¹⁸ When he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he must write for himself a copy of this law in a book, out of that which is before the priests, the Levites. ¹⁹ And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to revere the LORD your God by diligently observing all the word of this law and these rules, ²⁰ And that his heart be not lifted up with pride over his brethren, nor decline to the right or to the left, that he and his sons may reign a long time over Israel.

²⁵ Samuel explained to the people the regulations concerning kingship. He wrote them in a scroll and placed it before the LORD. Then Samuel sent all the people to their own houses.

⁵² All through the life of Saul there was bitter war against the Philistines; and whenever Saul saw any strong man or any good fighting man, he kept him near himself.

His name spread far abroad, because he was marvelously helped until he was strong.
