2 Samuel 12:16-23

16 David begged God on behalf of the youngster. He fasted, went inside, and spent the night lying on the ground. 17 The elders of his household stood over him to lift him up from the ground, but he was not willing, and he did not eat any food with them. 18 On the seventh day the child died. David's servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. They thought: "While the child was alive, we talked to him, and he would not listen to us. How can we tell him the child is dead? He may harm himself." 19 David saw that his servants were whispering to one another. He realized (discerned) that the child was dead. "Is the child dead?" David asked them. "Yes, he is dead." They answered. 20 David stood up from the ground and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothing. Then he went to the house of the LORD and worshiped, and he went to his own house. He asked, so they served him food, and he ate. 21 His staff asked him, "What's this about? When the child was alive, you fasted and cried. Now that the child has died, you get up and eat!" 22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I thought, Who knows? [perhaps] the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live. 23 But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.
