²² "You made your people Israel your very own for a very long time, and you, O LORD, have become their God.

⁷ "I will establish my covenant as a long lasting covenant between us. It will be for your descendants after you, for the generations to come. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

⁵ ‘If you will obey me and are faithful to the terms of my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my own special possession, for all the earth is mine. ⁶ but you, you will belong to me as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites."

⁶ For you are a holy people to the LORD your God. the LORD your God has chosen you to be His own treasure out of all the people on the face of the earth. ⁷ The LORD did not set his love on you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples: ⁸ But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn to your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bond-men, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

¹⁸ And the LORD has declared you today to be for him as a people, a treasured possession, as he promised to you, and that you are to observe all his commandments, ¹⁹ And that he will make you high over all the nations he has made, in praise, in name, and in honour, and that you are to be a holy people to the Lord your God as he has said.

²² For the LORD will not forsake his people for the sake of his great name, because the LORD has decided to make you his own people.

³¹ "The time is coming," proclaims the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. ³² It won't be like the covenant I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They broke my covenant, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. ³³ "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days," says the LORD: "I will put my law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: ³⁴ And they will teach no more every man his neighbor and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD, for they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity and I will remember their sin no more.

⁹ And I will bring the remaining third into the fire, and I will refine them like one refines silver, and I will test them like one tests gold. They will call my name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'the LORD is my God.'"

⁴ the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory and the covenants; theirs the giving of the Law, the temple worship, and the promises. ⁵ Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them proceeds the human descent of Christ, who is God over all, forever worthy of praise! Amen. ⁶ It is not as though God’s word has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

²⁵ As He says in Hosea: “I will call them My people who are not My people, and I will call her My beloved who is not My beloved,” ²⁶ "And it will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.'"

¹ I ask then, did God reject His people? Certainly not! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. ² God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel: ³ “LORD, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life!” ⁴ But what was the answer of God to him? I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal. ⁵ So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. ⁶ And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace. ⁷ What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened, ⁸ as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, down to this very day." ⁹ And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them. ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.” ¹¹ I ask then, did they stumble so as to lose their share? Absolutely not! However, because of their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous. ¹² But if their trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!

⁹ But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God; that you should declare the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
