¹ And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.

³¹ And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

¹⁶ And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. ¹⁷ And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; you shall have this son also. ¹⁸ And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin. ¹⁹ And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

¹⁵ And if you deal thus with me, kill me, I pray you, instantly, if I have found favour in your sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

²⁹ And Moses said unto him, Envy you for my sake? would God that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

⁴ And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: ⁵ But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁶ And her adversary also provoked her sore, in order to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. ⁸ Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weep you? and why eat you not? and why is your heart grieved? am not I better to you than ten sons?

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

¹ After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day. ² And Job spoke, and said, ³ Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a male child conceived.

¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the spirit when I came out of the belly?

²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ Which long for death, but it comes not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures; ²² Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

² For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the silly one.

¹⁹ Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the spirit.

¹⁶ They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD.

³⁰ A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

⁴ Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A male child is born unto you; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide; ¹⁷ Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me. ¹⁸ Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

³ He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

⁸ (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy food.)

³ For all of you are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are all of you not carnal, and walk as men?

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world works death.

²¹ Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

³ For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

¹⁴ But if all of you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

⁵ Do all of you think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit (o. pneuma) that dwells in us lusts to envy?
