1 When Jesus had finished these discourses he departed from Galilee and came to the borders of Judea, on the bank of the Jordan. 2 And great multitudes followed him, and he healed them there. 3 And the Pharisees came to him, and trying him said, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every fault? 4 In reply to which he said to them, "Have you not read that the Creator at the beginning made them a male and a female?" 5 Moreover he said, "For this cause a man is to leave his father and his mother, and cleave to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh; 6 so that they are no longer two but one flesh." Therefore what God hath conjoined, let not man separate. 7 They say to him, Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce and dismiss her? 8 He saith to them, Because of your intractable disposition Moses permitted you to put away your wives; but it was not so from the beginning. 9 Now I say to you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for whoredom and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he who marrieth her who was put away committeth adultery.

So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God hath conjoined, let not man separate. 10 And when he was in the house, his disciples asked him again concerning this matter. 11 Whereupon he saith to them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. 12 And if a woman put away her husband, and marry another, she committeth adultery.
