Such a one's religion is vain. ²⁷ Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and father is this, to take the oversight and care of orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep one's self unspotted from the world.

¹ An Alleluia. ALEPH. Happy the undefiled in the way! who walk in the law of the Lord. ² Happy they who search his testimonies, and seek him with their whole ³ heart: for they are not workers of iniquity; they have walked in his ways.

³² I ran in the way of thy commandments, when thou didst enlarge my heart.

⁴⁵ I indeed have walked in a roomy place, because I diligently sought thy precepts;

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted, I transgressed; for this cause I have kept thy word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that thou hast humbled me: that I might learn thy rules of rectitude.

It is my meditation all the day. ⁹⁸ Thou hast given me a knowledge of thy law above mine enemies; because it is mine forever. ⁹⁹ I had more understanding than all my teachers: because thy testimonies are my study. ¹⁰⁰ I understood more than elders: because I diligently sought thy commandments. ¹⁰¹ From every evil way I restrained my feet; that I might keep thy words. ¹⁰² I have not turned aside from thy judgments: because thou didst instruct me. ¹⁰³ How sweet are thine oracles to my taste! They are sweeter than honey to my mouth. ¹⁰⁴ From thy precepts I got understanding: Therefore I hated every wicked way. ¹⁰⁵ NUN. Thy law is a lamp to my feet; and a light to my paths.

⁶ Pray, I beseech you, for the peace of Jerusalem; and for prosperity to them who love thee.

³ Set a watch, Lord, on my mouth; and guard the door of my lips.

³ For if thou wilt call upon wisdom: and utter thy voice for understanding; ⁴ if thou wilt seek for it as silver; and search for it as for treasures; ⁵ then thou shalt understand the fear of the Lord; and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the Lord giveth wisdom; and from his presence is knowledge and understanding:

³² Now therefore, my son hearken to me: ³³ [Omitted] ³⁴ happy is the man who will hearken to me: and the man who will keep my ways; watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. ³⁵ For my ways are the ways of life; and volition is obtained from the Lord.

⁴ "Whosoever is simple, let him come to me." And to them who want understanding she saith, ⁵ "Come, eat of my bread and drink the wine which I have mixed for you. ⁶ Forsake folly, that you may reign forever: and seek prudence and build up understanding with knowledge."

¹⁹ In speaking much thou canst not avoid sin; but if thou art sparing of thy lips, thou wilt be wise.

³¹ The mouth of the righteous distilleth wisdom; but the tongue of the wicked shall be destroyed.

¹⁰ Divine sentence is in the mouth of a king: therefore his mouth should not err in judgment.

¹ Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and let thy sacrifice be a readiness to hear rather than the oblation of fools. Because they are not sensible that they do amiss, ² be thou not rash with thy mouth; nor let thy heart be hasty to utter a word in the presence of God. Because God is in the heaven above, and thou art on the earth, let thy words there fore be few. ³ Because a dream cometh by much temptation, and a fool's voice with many words;

¹⁵ As he came naked out of his mother's womb, he shall turn about and go as he came. He shall take nothing by his labour to go with him in his hand.

⁸ Better is a patient man than one of a haughty spirit. ⁹ Be not apt to be grieved in spirit; for grief will rest in the bosom of fools.

¹³ Though you bring fine flour; it is a vain incense: it is an abomination to me. Your new moons and sabbaths and great day I cannot endure:

¹⁵ When you stretch forth your hands, I will turn mine eyes from you: and though you multiply prayer, I will not hearken to you: for your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash and become clean: remove iniquities from your souls; in my presence, cease from your evil deeds; ¹⁷ learn to do good; seek judgment; deliver him who is injured; administer justice to the orphan, and plead the cause of the widow:

²³ The chiefs are rebellious; associates of thieves: they love gifts; they seek rewards: to orphans they do not administer justice; and to the cause of widows they do not attend.

²⁰ For on that day men will cast to the bats their abominations both of silver and gold, which they made to worship vanities;

²⁰ For he hath given a law for assistance; that they may not speak like such an oracle as this, which is not worth the giving of gifts for it.

¹ [p] AH! the crown of haughtiness! The mercenaries of Ephraim! That flower which hath fallen from the glory on the top of the fertile mountain! Ye who are drunk without wine!

⁴ And the flower which hath dropped from the hope of the Glory, on the top of the lofty mountain, shall be like the early fruit of a fig tree, which he who seeth it will wish to devour, before he can get it into his hand.

²⁶ So thou shalt be corrected by the judgment of God; and be made glad.

¹³ The Lord hath indeed said, [J] "This people draw near to me with their mouth; and with their lips they honour me; but their heart is far from me: and in vain do they worship me, teaching the commands and doctrines of men:

¹⁹ and the distressed shall exult with joy because of the Lord; and the disconsolate among men shall be filled with joy.

²² therefore thou wilt defile thine idols plated with silver, and cut to pieces those overlaid with gold, and scatter them like polluted water and cast them out as dirt.

⁶ A voice of one saying, Proclaim. "Wherefore I said, What shall I proclaim? "All flesh is grass; and all the glory of man as a flower of grass. ⁷ [Omitted] ⁸ The grass is withered and the flower fallen; but the word of our God will endure forever."

²⁰ Know thou that their heart is ashes, and they are led astray and none can deliver his soul. Take a view of it, will you not say, "There is indeed a lie in my right hand?"

⁷ It was I who provided light and made darkness; who make peace and create evils: I the Lord God am he who doth all these things.

¹⁰ who can declare events before they happen, as if they were already accomplished. When I have spoken, all my counsel shall stand; and all that I have determined, I will effect.

¹⁰ They shall not hunger nor shall they thirst, nor shall the burning wind nor the sun smite them; but he who hath compassion on them will comfort them and lead them to bursting springs of water.

⁶ Seek ye the Lord; and when you find him call upon him. And when he draweth near to you; ⁷ let the wicked man forsake his ways, and the unrighteous man his counsels, and turn to the Lord and he shall find mercy; for he will abundantly pardon your sins.

¹⁵ Thus saith the Most High, who on earth inhabiteth eternity, who is Holy among holies; whose name is THE MOST HIGH; who at rest in the holies giveth patience to the humble, and life to them who are of a contrite heart;

³ Saying, "Why have we fasted and thou hast not seen? We have humbled our souls and thou hast not known." In the very days of your fasts you enjoy your own pleasures and goad all them who are under your controul. ⁴ You fast for strife and debate; and smite the poor with your fists. Why fast ye for me as today that by a cry your voice may be heard?

⁶ It is not such a fast as this that I have chosen, saith the Lord. But loose every bond of iniquity; dissolve the obligations of onerous contracts; set at liberty them who are oppressed, and tear in pieces every unjust stipulation in writing: ⁷ deal out thy bread to the hungry, and take into thy house the poor who have no shelter; if thou seest one naked, clothe him, and look not scornfully on dependants of thy race;

⁴ None speaketh just things, nor is there any just judgment. They trusted in vanities and they speak lies. Because they hatch mischief, therefore they bring forth iniquity.

¹⁹ And thou shalt no more have the sun for a light by day nor shall the rising of the moon enlighten thy night; but the Lord will be to thee an everlasting light; and thy God will be thy glory.

¹ [M] THE SPIRIT of the Lord is upon me, for the business for which he anointed me. He hath sent me to publish glad tidings to the poor, to heal them who are brokenhearted; to proclaim a deliverance to captives, and a recovery of sight to the blind:

¹⁷ why, O Lord hast thou suffered us to wander from thy way, and our hearts to be hardened so as not to fear thee? Return for the sake of thy servants; for the sake of the tribes of thy heritage,

⁴ Never have we heard, nor have our eyes seen a God besides thee; nor works such as thine, which thou wilt do for them who wait for mercy.

² For all these things my hand hath made: and all these things are mine saith the Lord. Upon whom therefore will I look down, but upon him only who is humble and quiet, and who trembleth at my words?

⁶ Thereupon I said, self-existent sovereign, Lord! behold I know not how to speak, for I am a child. ⁷ And the Lord said to me, say not "For I am a child." For thou shalt go to all, to whomsoever I send thee; and according to all that I command thee thou shalt speak.

³ that thou mightest follow the Holy Israel, saith the Lord. The Holy Israel is to the Lord the chief of his productions, all that devour him shall be guilty of trespass: evils shall come upon them, saith the Lord.

²³ [J] Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom: nor the mighty man boast of his strength; neither let the rich man boast of his riches: ²⁴ but let him who boasteth, boast of this only, that he understandeth and knoweth, that I am the Lord, who exercise mercy and judgment and justice on the earth: that in these things is my delight, saith the Lord.

¹³ then pray to me and I will hearken to you:

¹⁶ In regard to this word which thou hast spoken to us in the name of the Lord,

¹⁵ and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have dispersed them among the nations. For I will disperse them through the countries

³¹ Cast away from you all your impious acts; which you have impiously committed against me; and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit: now why do you die, house of Israel,

³¹ They come to thee as people assemble; and they sit before thee and hear thy words, but will not do them, because there is a lie in their mouth, and their heart goeth after their pollutions; ³² therefore thou art to them like the sound of a tuneful psaltery: they will hear thy words, but will not do them:

²⁵ then I will sprinkle upon you pure water, and you shall be cleansed from all your impurities and from all your idols; and when I have cleansed you,

¹⁸ and they had sought mercy of the God of heaven touching this secret, that Daniel and his friends might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon: ¹⁹ and the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night; whereupon he blessed the God of heaven, and said, ²⁰ "Blessed be the name of God from everlasting to everlasting; for wisdom and knowledge are his; ²¹ and he changeth times and seasons. He setteth up kings and removeth them. He giveth wisdom to the wise and understanding to them who have knowledge. ²² He it is who revealeth deep and hidden things. He knoweth the things which are in darkness. And with him is the light.

²⁷ And Daniel answered in the presence of the king and said, The secret which the king demandeth, it is not in the power of wise men, magians, soothsayers, gazarenes, to tell the king. ²⁸ There is none but God in heaven who revealeth secrets. He indeed hath made known to the king Nabuchodonosar what must come to pass in latter days. With regard to thy dream, and the visions of thy head, on thy bed, this is it. ²⁹ Thy thoughts, king, on thy bed ascended to what might come to pass hereafter. And he who revealeth secrets made known to thee the things which must come to pass. ³⁰ And to me this secret was revealed, not indeed for any wisdom in me above all the living: but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, that thou mayst know the thoughts of thy heart.

⁸ Ephraim was mingled among his tribes; Ephraim was a cake under ashes, which had not been turned. ⁹ Strangers devoured his strength and he did not know it; grey hairs grew upon him and he did not perceive it. ¹⁰ [p] Though it was evident that the haughtiness of Israel would be humbled, yet they did not turn to the Lord their God, nor seek him diligently for all this. ¹¹ [J] Ephraim indeed was like a silly dove which had no understanding; he called upon Egypt: and they went to the Assyrians.

² They divided their hearts; they shall now be destroyed. He will demolish their altars. Their pillars shall be in extreme distress.

⁹ In thy destruction, Israel, who can give succour?

¹ Alas for them who despise Sion and have put their trust in the mount of Samaria. They have gathered as a vintage the governments of nations and gone in

³ Behold I have made thee very small among the nations: thou art dishonoured in a high degree. The pride of thy heart puffed thee up, dwelling in the clefts of rocks. [Having made his habitation high he said in his heart, Who can bring me down to the ground?]

⁷ But early the next morning God gave orders to a Worm and it smote the colocynthis and it withered. ⁸ And when the sun rose God ordered a burning wind to spring up and the sun beat upon Jonas' head so that he became fainty and abandoned himself to despair and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

¹ They planned mischief; they contrived evils on their beds, and soon as it was day they executed them; for they did not lift up their hands to God. ² They coveted fields and plundered orphans and tyrannised over houses; they plundered a man and his household; a man and his inheritance; ³ therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold against this tribe I am planning evils, from which you shall not withdraw your necks, nor walk erect suddenly. Because it is an evil time,

³ for the vision is for a time yet to come. But it will spring up at last and will not be vain. Though he may tarry, wait for him; for he will assuredly come and will not fail.

¹² Woe to him who buildeth a city with blood and furbisheth up a city with iniquities! ¹³ Are not these things from the Lord Almighty? When many nations have fainted by fire, and many peoples have been dispirited,

³ Seek the Lord all ye meek of the land; exercise judgment and seek righteousness, and live answerably; that you may be sheltered in the day of the anger of the Lord.

⁹ And when I have passed this third part through fire, and tried them as silver is tried, and proved them as gold is proved; this people will invoke My name and I will hear them and say, this is my people, and they will say, the Lord is my God.

² And who can abide the day of his coming? Or who can stand his appearance? Since he is coming like the fire of a refiner's furnace; and like the soap of the fullers. ³ He will sit refining and purifying and will purify the sons of Levi like the silver and gold, and melt them like the gold and silver. Then shall they offer to the Lord a sacrifice in righteousness

⁶ Because I the Lord am your God and change not;

¹⁴ You say, "Vain is he who serveth God: and what advantage is it, that we have kept his charges. For though we have walked as supplicants before the Lord Almighty,

³ Happy the poor in spirit; for the kingdom of the heavens is theirs.

⁵ Happy the meek; for they shall inherit the land.

⁸ Happy the pure in heart; for they shall see God.

¹⁰ Happy they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake; for the kingdom of the heavens is theirs. ¹¹ Happy are ye when men will revile and persecute you, and accuse you falsely of every evil thing on my account. ¹² Rejoice and exult triumphantly; for great will be your reward in heaven: for thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

²² But I say to you, Whosoever is angry with his brother without cause, shall be liable to the sentence of the judges: and whoever shall say to his brother, Raca, [a contemptuous word] shall be liable to the sentence of the Sanhedrim; and whoever shall say, Moreh, [a reproachful word] shall be liable [to be sentenced] to the vale of fire.

²⁸ But I say to you, whoever looketh on a married woman so as to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.

⁴⁸ You therefore are to be perfect, as your Father, who is in heaven, is perfect.

²² The eye is the lamp of the body. If therefore thine eye be sound thy whole body will be enlightened:

²⁴ No man can serve two masters: for he will either hate one and love the other; or he will attend to one and neglect the other. You cannot serve God and a worldly temperent

³⁰ Now if God thus arrayeth the herbage which is today in the field, and tomorrow to be cast into a furnace, will he not much more clothe you, O ye mistrustful?

⁷ Ask, and ye shall obtain; seek and ye shall find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. ⁸ For every one who asketh, obtaineth; and he who seeketh, findeth; and to him who knocketh the door will be opened. ⁹ Is there any man among you, who, when his son asketh bread, will give him a stone; ¹⁰ or if he ask for a fish will give him a serpent? ¹¹ If you therefore, bad as you are, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father who is in heaven give good things to them who ask him?

²¹ Not every one who saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he who doeth the will of my father who is in heaven. ²² Many will say to me on that day Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name cast out demons, and in thy name done many miracles, ²³ to whom I will then declare, I never acknowledged you; Depart from me ye who work iniquity. ²⁴ Therefore whoever heareth these words of mine and putteth them in practice, him I will compare to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock. ²⁵ When the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, it did not fall, because it was founded on the rock. ²⁶ But whoever heareth these words of mine, and doth not put them in practice, may be compared to a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. ²⁷ When the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; it fell, and great was the ruin thereof.

²⁷ And the men in amaze, said, "What sort of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?"

³ Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, James the son of Alpheus and Lebbeus called Thaddeus,

²⁰ Then he began to upbraid the cities in which the most of his miracles had been done, because they had not reformed.

⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary and his brethren, James and Joses and Simon and Judas?

⁹ and, in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines, the commands of men.

¹⁸ And that what proceed from the mouth come from the heart, and that these defile the man?

²⁰ These are the things which defile the man: but to eat with unwashen hands doth not defile the man.

²⁰ The youth said to him, All these I have kept from my childhood. What do I yet lack?

²⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Verily I say to you, With respect to you who have followed me, at the renovation, when the son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, you also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

²¹ And Jesus answering, said to them, Verily I say to you, if you have faith, without wavering, you may do not only as much as is done to this fig tree; but if you should even say to that mountain, Be thou lifted up and thrown into the sea, it shall be done. ²² And whatever you ask in prayer, with faith, you shall obtain.

²⁹ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God.

⁴⁸ Now his betrayer had given them a sign, saying, The person I shall kiss is he; Secure him. ⁴⁹ So coming directly up to Jesus, he said, Hail, Rabbi! and kissed him. ⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, Companion! for what purpose art thou come? Then others, advancing, laid hands on Jesus, and held him. ⁵¹ Upon which one of them who were with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, drew his sword, and smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. ⁵² Thereupon Jesus saith to him, Return thy sword to its place. For are all who have taken a sword to perish by a sword? ⁵³ Or dost thou think that I cannot now address ray father, who can send to my assistance, more than twelve legions of angels? ⁵⁴ How then would the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? ⁵⁵ At that instant Jesus was saying to the multitudes, Are you come out as against a rubber with swords and clubs, to take me? Day after day I sat before you teaching in the temple, and you did not lay hold on me. ⁵⁶ But all this is done that the writings of the prophets may be confirmed. Then all the disciples forsook him and fled. ⁵⁷ And they who had hold of Jesus led him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the Scribes and the elders of the people were assembled. ⁵⁸ Now Peter followed him at a distance, even to the court of the high priest. And having gone in, he sat down with the attendants, to see the issue. ⁵⁹ And the chief priests and the elders, even the whole Sanhedrim, sought false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death,

²⁰ teaching them to observe all that I commanded you. And lo! I am with you all the days to the conclusion of this age. Amen.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of man, proceed those evil surmises, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² thefts, inordinate desires, malice, fraud, sensuality, envy, detraction, pride, foolishness.

But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

For if for the offence of the one, death reigned by that one; much more shall they who receive the superabundance of this favour and of the free gift of this acquittal, reign in life by the other, namely Jesus Christ. ¹⁸ Therefore as by one transgression there was a sentence of condemnation for all men; so by one acquittal there is an adjudication of life for all men. ¹⁹ For as by the disobedience of the one man, the many were ranked as sinners, so also by the obedience of the other man, the many will be ranked as righteous. ²⁰ Now the law came in a little way, so that transgression abounded, but where sin abounded, favour superabounded, ²¹ that as sin had reigned by death, so favour might reign by means' of a justification for everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹⁷ But thanks be to God, that though you were slaves of sin, yet from the heart you have conformed to the mould of doctrine in which you were cast,

²⁵ Now, every one who is to contend in the public games is temperate in all things. They indeed do this that they may obtain a corruptible crown. But we [to obtain] one that is incorruptible.

⁴ Now, there are diversities of gifts, but the same spirit; ⁵ and there are diversities of offices, but the same Lord; ⁶ and there are diversities of energies, but it is the same God who by his inward operation worketh all these effects in all. ⁷ Now, this manifestation of the spirit is given to every one for that which is profitable. ⁸ For to one is given, by the spirit, a word of wisdom; and to another, a word of knowledge according to the same spirit; ⁹ and to another, faith, by the same spirit; and to another, gifts of healing, by the same spirit; ¹⁰ and to another, mighty powers of working miracles; and to another, the gift of prophecy; and to another, that of discerning spirits; and to another, divers languages; and to another, the interpretation of languages. ¹¹ Now, it is one and the same spirit who effecteth all these, distributing his own as he pleaseth, to every one. ¹² For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body; so also is the Christ.

⁶ Because it is God, who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who hath shined in our hearts, to give a lustre of the knowledge of the glory of God in the person of Jesus Christ;

¹⁷ For this momentary and light affliction of ours is working out for us an eternal weight of glory, great beyond expression,

¹⁰ as sorrowful, yet still rejoicing; as poor, yet enriching many; as having nothing, yet possessing all things.

¹ Having therefore, beloved, these promises, let us purify ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Therefore I will with the greatest pleasure, rather boast of my weaknesses, that the power of the Christ may shelter me. ¹⁰ I feel therefore a complacency in weaknesses, in reproaches, in difficulties, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ; for when I am weak, then am I strong.

⁵ Examine yourselves whether you be in the faith: prove yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you, unless you are somehow incapable of standing the test.

¹⁷ They are wells without water; clouds impelled by a whirlwind, for whom is reserved in the bowels of the earth the gloom of everlasting darkness.

¹¹ Therefore as all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness,

¹⁶ as he hath also in all his letters, when speaking of these things; in which there are some things hard to be understood; which the unlearned and unstable torture, as they do the other scriptures, to their own destruction.

⁵ This indeed is the message which we have heard from him, and announce to you, That God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.

⁸ If we say that we have not sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

³ Now by this we know that we have known him, if we keep his commandments.

¹⁵ Love not the world nor the things in the world. If any one loveth the world, the love of the Father is not in him ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the desire of the eyes, and the pomp of this life are not of the Father, but are of the world. ¹⁷ Now the world is passing away, and the desire thereof; but he who doth the will of God shall abide forever.

²¹ I have not written to you because you do not know the truth; but because you know it, and because no kind of falsehood is of the truth.

¹ Behold what a love the Father hath shewn us, that we should be called children of God: on this account the world doth not know us, because it did not know him. ² Beloved, we are now children of God. Though it hath not yet been manifested what we shall be, yet we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him: that we shall see him as he is. ³ Now, everyone who hath this hope in him purifieth himself as he is pure.

⁷ Children, let no one deceive you. He who practiseth righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.

⁹ Whosoever is born of God doth not practise sin, because his seed abideth in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God.

¹⁷ Whosoever hath worldly substance, and seeth his brother in want, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? ¹⁸ My children, let us not love in word, and with the tongue, but in deed, and in truth. ¹⁹ When we know by this that we are of the truth, let us in his presence persuade our hearts,

²² and whatever we ask we obtain from him, because we keep his commandments, and do the things which are pleasing in his sight.

¹⁰ In this is the love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to be an atonement for our sins.

¹⁷ Love is by this perfected among us that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because in this world we are as he is. ¹⁸ There is no fear in this love. This perfect love excludeth fear. Because fear is accompanied with torment, therefore he who feareth is not perfect in love. ¹⁹ As for us we love him because he first loved us.

⁴ because whatever is born of God overcometh the world, and the victory which overcometh the world is our faith. ⁵ Who is he that overcometh the world, but he who believeth that Jesus is the son of God?

¹¹ Now this is the testimony, that God hath given us everlasting life, and this life is by his son: ¹² he who hath the son hath this life: he who hath not the son of God hath not this life.

¹⁴ this also is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask any thing according to his will he hearkeneth to us. ¹⁵ Now, if we know that he hearkeneth to us in whatever we may ask; we know that we obtain from him the petitions which we have asked.

¹⁸ and we know that every one who is born of God doth not sin; he indeed who is born of God guardeth himself and the wicked one doth not cling to him.

¹¹ Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who doth good is of God. But he who doth evil, hath not seen God.

¹ Jude a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James; to the called, who are sanctified by God the father, and preserved by Jesus Christ:

¹² They are hidden rocks in your love feasts. When they feast with you, they feed themselves without restraint. They are clouds without water, impelled by winds; autumnal trees without fruit, twice dead, and to be rooted up; ¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom is reserved the gloom of everlasting darkness.

⁹ "I know thy works, and thine affliction, and thy poverty, [though thou art rich] and the slander of them who say they are Jews, and are not, but are a synagogue of satan. ¹⁰ Be not terrified at what thou art about to suffer. Behold the devil will soon cast some of you into prison, that you may be tried; and ye will have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.

¹⁹ Whomsoever I love, I rebuke and chastise. Be zealous therefore, and reform.

²¹ To him who overcometh I will grant to sit with me on my throne, as I have overcome, and sit with my Father on his throne.

⁹ And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy art thou to take the book and to open the seals of it, because thou hast been slain and hast purchased us for God with thy blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation; ¹⁰ and hast made us kings and priests for our God, and we shall reign on the earth."

⁴ And I heard the number of them who were sealed: a hundred and forty four thousand were sealed of all the tribes of the children of Israel

⁹ After this I looked and behold! a great multitude, which no one could number, of every nation and of tribes and peoples and tongues standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clad in white robes; and palm branches in their hands; ¹⁰ and they cried with a loud voice, saying, "To our God who is sitting on the throne and to the Lamb be ascribed this salvation!"

⁹ And the great dragon was cast out that old serpent who is called The Devil and Satan who leadeth the whole world astray. He was thrown on the earth and his angels were thrown with him.

⁴ These are they who were not defiled with women, for they are pure as virgins. These are they who follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men; first fruits for God and the Lamb.

¹³ Then I heard a voice from the heaven saying to me, "Write, Happy the dead who die in the Lord henceforth! Yes, verily saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labours and their works accompany them.

¹⁴ And death and the mansion of the dead were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. ¹⁵ And whoever was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

²³ And the city had no need of the sun nor of the moon to enlighten it; for the glory of God enlightened it; and the lamb is its lamp:

⁵ And there shall be no night there; nor have they any need of a lamp or of the light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light; and they shall reign for the ages of the ages.

⁷ Behold I am coming quickly. Happy he who keepeth the words of the prophecy of this book.

¹⁴ Happy they who perform his commandments that they may have access to the tree of life and enter by the gates into the city:
