¹ Woe to them who write wickedness! For writers are writing wickedness;

¹³ and there came in two wicked men and sat over against him and testified against him saying, Thou hast renounced God and the king. Upon which they led him out of the city, and stoned him with stones so that he died.

¹⁰ Thereupon the king taking off his ring gave it to Haman to seal the writings against the Jews. ¹¹ And the king said to Haman, Keep the money, and do with the nation what thou pleasest. ¹² So the king's secretaries were convened on the thirteenth day of the first month, and they wrote as Haman directed to the generals and the governors in every province, from India to Ethiopia a hundred and twenty seven provinces, and to the chiefs of the nations according to their dialect in the name of king Artaxerxes, ¹³ and the decree was despatched by posts throughout the whole kingdom of Artaxerxes, to destroy the race of the Jews on a certain day of the twelfth month which is Adar, and to make spoil of their goods.

² In heart, indeed, you are working iniquity in the land: your hands are weaving injustice.

²⁰ Shall a throne of iniquity; shall he who frameth mischief for law, have fellowship with thee? ²¹ Shall they hunt for the soul of the righteous? And shall they condemn innocent blood?

¹¹ Alas for the wicked! according to the works of his hands evils shall befal him. my people!

⁸ Woe unto them who join house to house, and who are bringing field nearer to field, that they may take something from their neighbour. Are you alone to dwell in the land?

¹¹ Woe to them, who rise early to follow strong drink, and continue at it till late at night; for the wine will inflame them.

¹⁸ Woe unto them who draw out sins as for a long cable: and iniquities as for an ox chain:

²⁰ Woe to them who call evil good; and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet; and sweet for bitter. ²¹ Woe to them who are wise in their own conceit, and in their own eyes prudent. ²² Woe to your mighty men who drink wine; and to your princes who mingle strong drink:

¹³ With regard to him who is building himself a house, but not with righteousness, and lofty stories, but not with justice: he useth the service of his neighbour for nothing, and will not pay him his wages.

⁸ Now therefore, king, establish the edict and promulgate it in writing, that the decree of the Persians and Medes may not be dispensed with. ⁹ Upon this Darius the king ordered the decree to be written.

¹ and he will say, "Hear these things ye children of the house of Jacob, and ye remnant of the house of Israel, is it not your business to know judgment? ² As for them who hate good and seek evil, who tear off the skin from these and the flesh from their bones: ³ as they have devoured the flesh of my people and have flayed off their skin from them; and have broken their bones and chopped them up, as flesh for a kettle and as pieces of meat for a pot: ⁴ so they shall cry to the Lord but he will not hearken to them; but will turn away his face from them at that time, because by their devices they have committed evil against these.

⁹ [p] Hear these things I beseech you, ye leaders of the house of Jacob, and ye remnant of the house of Israel, who abhor judgment and pervert all equity, ¹⁰ who are building up Sion with blood and Jerusalem with injustice. ¹¹ [J] Her rulers have judged for rewards; and her priests have given answers for hire; and her prophets have prophesied for silver, without waiting for the Lord, saying, "Is not the Lord among us? No evils shall come upon us:"

¹⁶ As thou hast kept the statutes of Zambri, and all the works of the house of Achab; and you have walked in their ways, that I might deliver thee up to desolation, and the inhabitants of this city to hissing; therefore you shall bear the reproaches of peoples.

⁶ will they not all take up a parable against him and a fable to tell of him, saying, Woe to him who is heaping up for himself things which do not belong to him? For how long? And making his yoke grievously heavy.

⁹ Woe to him who coveteth wicked gain for his house, that he

¹² Woe to him who buildeth a city with blood and furbisheth up a city with iniquities!

¹⁵ Woe to him who maketh his neighbour drink a foamy intoxicating draught, making him drunk that he may inspect his caves.

¹⁹ Woe to him who saith to Wood, Awake; arise. And to stone, be thou exalted. The one is indeed a fantasy; and the other, a plating of gold and silver: there is no breath in it.

²¹ Alas for thee Chorazin! Alas for thee Bethsaida! For had the miracles, which have been performed in you, been done in Tyre and Sidon they would have repented long ago in sack cloth and ashes.

¹³ Now alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the kingdom of the heavens against men. For you neither enter in yourselves, nor suffer them who are going in, to enter. ¹⁴ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you devour the houses of the widows; and for a pretext make long prayers. For this you shall be punished with greater severity. ¹⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, you make him doubly more a child of hell, than yourselves. ¹⁶ Alas for you, blind guides, who say, to swear by the temple is not binding; but to swear by the gold of the temple is binding.

²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those.

²⁷ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like whitened sepulchres. These indeed appear beautiful on the outside; but within they are full of dead men's bones, and of all Corruption.

²⁹ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,

²⁴ The son of man goeth indeed as it is written of him. But alas for that man by whom the son of man is delivered up. Good were it for that man if he had never been born.

⁴² But alas for you, Pharisees! because you pay tithe of mint, and rue, and of all kinds of pulse, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have practised, without, however, neglecting the other. ⁴³ Alas for you, Pharisees! because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and salutations in public places. ⁴⁴ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like concealed graves, over which men walk without perceiving them.

⁴⁶ Thereupon he said, Alas for you also, ye teachers of the law, because you load men with heavy burdens hard to be borne, and will not yourselves touch these burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Alas for you; because you build the monuments of the prophets, and your fathers slew them.

⁵² Alas for you, teachers of the law! because you have taken away the key of knowledge. You entered not in yourselves; and them who were entering you hindered.

²² This his parents said, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had now agreed that if any one acknowledged Jesus to be the Christ, he should be excommunicated.

⁶ Upon which when the chief priests, and the officers saw him, they cried, saying, Crucify him; crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Take him yourselves and crucify him; for I find no fault in him.

¹¹ Alas for them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and rambled in the error of Balaam's reward and perished in the rebellion of Kore.
