⁹ But the evil spirit from God came upon Saul when he was sitting in his house, with his spear in his hand, and while David's hands were engaged in playing, ¹⁰ Saul sought to strike the spear into David; but David darted from before him, and he struck the spear into the wall. As David had withdrawn, and escaped,

¹⁵ And Samuel said, Why hast thou troubled me, that I should come up? And Saul said, I am in great affliction. The Philistines are making war on me, and God hath departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by the agency of prophets, nor by dreams. Now therefore I have called thee, to let me know what I shall do.

²² And the Lord said to him, How? And he said, I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt deceive him and actually prevail. Go and do so.

¹¹ Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy spirit from me.

¹² For though they bring up their children, they shall be bereaved of them from among men: for [and alas for them! my flesh is of them]

¹⁵ Upon which the evil spirit in reply said, Jesus I know, and I have some knowledge of Paul: but who are ye? ¹⁶ Then the man, in whom was the evil spirit, springing upon them, and getting a mastery over them, prevailed against them so that they fled out of his house naked and wounded.
