⁵³ Then the servant brought out jewels of silver and gold and raiment and gave them to Rebekka, and made presents to her brother and to her mother.

²² but every woman shall ask of her neighbour and of him who sojourneth in her house vessels of silver and of gold, and raiment which you shall put on your sons and your daughters and you shall spoil the Egyptians.

² Thereupon Aaron said to them, Take off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives and daughters and bring them to me.

⁴ And when the people heard these evil tidings they mourned bitterly.

²² then the men brought from their wives; every one as it seemed good brought seals and pendants and rings and necklaces and bracelets and all sorts of jewels of gold.

¹ Awake, awake, Sion! clothe thyself, Sion, with thy strength. Put on thy glory. O Jerusalem, thou holy city! No more shall the uncircumcised and the unclean pass through thee.

¹⁰ And they shall rejoice in the Lord with joy.[c] Rejoice in the Lord, my soul, for he hath clothed me with the mantle of Salvation, and with an under garment of gladness, he hath crowned me as a bridegroom with a crown and adorned me as a bride, with jewels,

³² Will a bride forget her attire; or a virgin, the ornaments that deck her bosom? Yet my people have forgotten me, days without number.

³⁰ And as for thee what wilt thou do? Though thou clothe thyself with scarlet and deck thyself with ornaments of gold; though thou paint thine eyes with stibium, thy decoration will avail nothing; thy lovers have cast thee off. They will seek thy life.

⁷ Be multiplied like the grass of the field; I have betrothed thee. So thou didst increase and grow great and enter the class of chief cities. Thy breasts were fashioned and thy locks flowing. But thou wast naked and exposed to shame. ⁸ Then I passed by thee and beheld thee and lo! thou wast of a marriageable age. So I spread my skirt over thee and covered thy nakedness; and sware to thee and entered into covenant with thee, saith the Lord. ⁹ And when thou becamest mine I washed thee with water, and cleansed away thy blood from thee and anointed thee with oil; ¹⁰ And I clothed thee with embroidery and shod thee with purple sandals and girded thee with a cotton zone and threw around thee a mantle of tissue. ¹¹ And I decked thee with ornaments, and put bracelets round thy wrists and a chain round thy neck, ¹² and gave thee a jewel for thy nose and ear-rings for thine ears, and a crown of exquisite beauty for thy head. ¹³ So thou wast adorned with gold and silver, and thy raiment was of cotton, tissue and embroidery; and thy food was fine flour, oil and honey. And thou becamest exceeding beautiful,

⁴⁰ and because, for the men who came from afar, to whom messengers had been despatched, thou didst immediately on their coming, anoint thyself with oil and paint thine eyes with stibium, and

² and be not conformed to this world; but transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may know experimentally what the will of God is, which is good and acceptable and perfect.

⁹ in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in comely apparel, with bashful modesty; not with curls, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; ¹⁰ but with good works, as it becometh women who profess a reverence for God.

³ that aged women, in like manner, be in behaviour as becometh saints, not addicted to slander, not enslaved to wine, good instructors, that they may ⁴ teach the young women to be discreet, to love their husbands, to love their children, ⁵ to be modest, chaste, attentive to domestic affairs, good, submissive to their husbands; that the word of God may not be ill spoken of. ⁶ In like manner exhort young men to be sober minded, ⁷ shewing thyself in all things a pattern of good works; in thy doctrine displaying integrity, gravity, incorruptness, ⁸ sound discourse which cannot be condemned, that he who is of an opposite party may be ashamed, having nothing bad to say of you. ⁹ Exhort servants to be obedient to their masters; to be in all things studious to please; not answering again, ¹⁰ not embezzling, but shewing all good fidelity, that they may in all things adorn the doctrine of our saviour God. ¹¹ For the favour of God which is for salvation hath been brightly displayed for all men ¹² teaching us in order that we, renouncing impiety and worldly lusts, may live soberly and righteously and piously in this present world, ¹³ waiting for the blessed hope and the bright display of the glory of the great God, and saviour of us Jesus Christ, ¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. ¹⁵ Speak these things, and exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise thee.
