²³ surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those that provoked me see it:

⁶⁴ But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

And when you had girded on every man his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the hill. ⁴² And the LORD said to me, Say to them. Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be smitten before your enemies. ⁴³ So I spoke to you; and you would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill. ⁴⁴ And the Amorites, which dwelled in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even to Hormah. ⁴⁵ And you returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not listen to your voice, nor give ear to you.

²³ Their children also multiplied you as the stars of heaven, and brought them into the land, concerning which you had promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

²⁶ Therefore He lifted up His hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:

¹⁵ Yet I also lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands;

¹⁷ But with whom was He grieved forty years? Was it not with those that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did He swear that they should not enter into His rest, but to those that did not believe?

³ For we who have believed do enter into rest, as He said, "As I have sworn in My wrath, 'If they shall enter into My rest' ": Although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
