¹⁸ In that day five cities in the land of Egypt shall speak the language of Canaan, and swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction.

⁹ For then I will turn the people to a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve Him with one consent.

⁶ Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because every man heard them speak in his own language.

¹⁰ And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

⁹ Therefore the name of it is called Babel; because the LORD confounded the language of all the earth there: And from that place the LORD scattered them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

¹¹ Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan river; and Lot journeyed east: And they separated themselves from each other.

¹ And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;

¹¹ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

² And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: Which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

⁴ And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, whose top may reach to heaven; and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."

⁷ Come, let us go down, and in that place confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."

¹⁰ And the valley of Siddim was full of viscous mud pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and those that remained fled to the mountain.

¹⁴ And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: All their service, in which they made them serve, was with rigor.

³ And when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, and daubed it with viscous mud and with pitch, and put the child in it; and she laid it in the reed flags by the river's brink.

⁷ "You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick, as in times past: Let them go and gather straw for themselves. ⁸ And the set number of bricks, which they have made before, you shall lay upon them; you shall not diminish any part of it: For they are idle; therefore they cry out, saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' ⁹ Let there be more work laid upon the men, that they may labor in it; and do not let them regard vain words." ¹⁰ And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, "Thus says Pharaoh, 'I will not give you straw. ¹¹ Go, get yourselves straw where you can find it: Yet none of your work shall be diminished.' " ¹² So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. ¹³ And the taskmasters hurried them, saying, "Fulfill your assigned work, your daily tasks, like when there was straw." ¹⁴ And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, "Why have you not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today, as you did before?" ¹⁵ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you deal in this manner with your servants? ¹⁶ There is no straw given to your servants, and they say to us, 'Make brick': And behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people. ¹⁷ But he said, "You are idle, you are idle: Therefore you say, 'Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD.' ¹⁸ Go now therefore, and work; for there shall be no straw given to you, yet you shall deliver the set number of bricks."

³¹ And he brought forth the people that were in it, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln: And thus did he to all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil matter: They commune in discourse of laying snares privately; they say, "Who shall see them?

¹¹ If they say, "Come with us, let us lay in wait for blood, let us lurk privately for the innocent without cause:

¹ I said in my heart, "Go now, I will test you with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure": And behold, this also is vanity.

⁵ And now come; I will tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall of it, and it shall be trodden down:

¹⁰ "The bricks have fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: The sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars."

⁶ Everyone helped his neighbor; and everyone said to his brother, "Be of good courage." ⁷ So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he who smoothes with the hammer him that smote the anvil, saying, "It is ready for the soldering": And he fastened it with nails, that it should not be moved.

³ A people who provoke Me to anger continually to My face; who sacrifice in gardens, and burn incense on altars of brick;

¹⁴ Draw yourself waters for the siege, fortify your strongholds: Go into clay, and tread the mortar, make strong the brick kiln.

¹³ But exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today"; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

²⁴ and let us consider one another to provoke us to love and to good works:

¹³ Go now, you that say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a city, continue there for a year, buy and sell, and win gain":

¹ Go now, you rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.

⁴ There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

⁸ So the LORD scattered them abroad from there upon the face of all the earth: And they ceased to build the city. ⁹ Therefore the name of it is called Babel; because the LORD confounded the language of all the earth there: And from that place the LORD scattered them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

²⁸ Where shall we go up? Our brothers have discouraged our heart, saying, "The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.

²⁷ And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and you shall be left few in number among the heathen, where the LORD shall lead you.

¹ Hear, O Israel: You are to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,

¹³ And David got him a name when he returned from smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men.

¹¹ Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue forever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. ¹² Nevertheless, man being in honor does not remain: He is like the beasts that perish. ¹³ Their way is their folly: Yet their posterity approve their sayings. ⁹ For lo, Your enemies, O LORD, for lo, Your enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

⁷ The memory of the just is blessed: But the name of the wicked shall rot.

¹¹ The tree grew, and was strong, and the height of it reached to heaven, and the sight of it to the end of all the earth:

²² It is you, O king, that are grown and have become strong: For your greatness has grown, and reaches to heaven, and your dominion to the end of the earth.

³⁰ The king spoke, and said, "Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty?"

⁵¹ He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from God only?

²¹ I will go down now, and see whether they have without exception done according to the cry of it, which has come to Me; and if not, I will know."

⁸ and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and a large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

¹¹ and be ready against the third day: For the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon Mount Sinai.

¹⁸ And Mount Sinai was altogether raging smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: And its smoke ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

²⁰ And the LORD came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: And the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

⁴ The LORD is in His holy temple, the LORD's throne is in heaven: His eyes behold and His eyelids examine the children of men.

¹³ The LORD looks from heaven; He beholds all the sons of men. ¹⁴ From the place of His habitation He looks upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

²³ "Am I a God near at hand", said the LORD, "and not a God afar off? ²⁴ Can anyone hide himself in secret places such that I shall not see him?" said the LORD. "Do I not fill heaven and earth?" said the LORD.

¹³ And no man has ascended up to heaven, except He that came down from heaven, even the Son of Man which is in heaven.

¹³ Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: But all things are naked and uncovered to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to give account.

²² And the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become as one of Us, to know good and evil: And now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever":

⁵ And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

²¹ And the LORD smelled a sweet savor; and the LORD said in his heart, "I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

¹⁹ These are the three sons of Noah: And of them the whole earth was overspread.

¹ And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

¹⁴ Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.

²⁷ And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, "Cry aloud: For he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleeps, and must be awaked.

¹ Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? ² The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against His anointed, saying, ³ "Let us break their bands apart, and cast away their cords from us." ⁴ He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: The LORD shall have them in derision.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth; and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes: But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

²⁶ and He has made from one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined the pre-appointed times, and the bounds of their habitation;

²⁶ And God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the domestic beasts, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."

⁵ By these the isles of the Gentiles were divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

²⁰ These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

³² These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: And by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

⁵ And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.

²³ And they did not know that Joseph understood them; for he spoke to them by an interpreter.

⁴⁹ The LORD shall bring a nation against you from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies; a nation whose tongue you shall not understand;

¹² He disappoints the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness: And the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

²⁰ He removes away the speech of the trusty, and takes away the understanding of the aged.

⁴ He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: The LORD shall have them in derision.

¹⁰ The LORD brings the counsel of the heathen to nothing: He makes the devices of the people of no effect.

⁹ Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: For I have seen violence and strife in the city.

⁸ Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us? Then I said, "Here I am; send me."

¹⁵ See, I will bring a nation from afar upon you, O house of Israel", said the LORD: "it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, neither can you understand what they say.

⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ⁵ And there were Jews dwelling in Jerusalem, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. ⁶ Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because every man heard them speak in his own language. ⁷ And they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Behold, are not all these who speak Galileans? ⁸ And how come we hear every man in our own tongue, in which we were born? ⁹ Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya around Cyrene, strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, ¹¹ Cretes and Arabians, we hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God."

² For he that speaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to men, but to God: For no man understands him; nevertheless in the spirit he speaks mysteries. ³ But he that prophesies speaks edification, exhortation, and comfort to men. ⁴ He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the church. ⁵ I would like that you all spoke with tongues, but far more that you prophesied: For greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, that the church may receive edification. ⁶ Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? ⁷ And even things without life bringing forth sound, whether pipe or harp, unless they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? ⁸ For if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself for the battle? ⁹ So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? For you shall speak into the air. ¹⁰ There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. ¹¹ Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaks a barbarian, and he who speaks shall be a barbarian to me.

²³ If therefore the whole church comes together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that you are beside yourselves?

²⁵ And to Eber were born two sons: The name of one was Peleg; for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

⁸ When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

³¹ These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations. ³² These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: And by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

¹ The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw. ² Lift up a banner on the high mountain, exalt the voice to them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles. ³ I have commanded My sanctified ones, I have also called My mighty ones for My anger, even them that rejoice in My highness. ⁴ The noise of a multitude in the mountains, as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: The LORD of hosts musters the host of the battle. ⁵ They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of His indignation, to destroy the whole land. ⁶ Howl all of you; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. ⁷ Therefore all hands shall be faint, and every man's heart shall melt: ⁸ And they shall be afraid: Pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travails: They shall be amazed at one another; their faces shall be as flames. ⁹ Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: And He shall destroy its sinners out of it. ¹⁰ For the stars of heaven and their constellations shall not give light: The sun shall be darkened in His going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. ¹¹ And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. ¹² I will make a man more precious than fine gold; a man even more than the golden wedge of Ophir. ¹³ Therefore I will shake heaven, and the earth shall move out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of His fierce anger. ¹⁴ And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man takes shepherds: Every man shall turn to his own people, and everyone flee into his own land.

¹ The word that the LORD spoke against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet. ² "Declare among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and do not conceal: Say, 'Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.' ³ For out of the north there comes up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell in it: They shall move, they shall depart, both man and beast. ⁴ In those days, and at that time", said the LORD, "the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: They shall go, and seek the LORD their God. ⁵ They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces towards it, saying, 'Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.' ⁶ My people have been lost sheep: Their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away upon the mountains: They have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place. ⁷ All who found them have devoured them: And their adversaries said, 'We do not offend, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers.' ⁸ Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he-goats before the flocks. ⁹ For lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: And they shall set themselves in array against her; from there she shall be taken: Their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain. ¹⁰ And Chaldea shall be a spoil: All that spoil her shall be satisfied", said the LORD. ¹¹ "Because you were glad, because you rejoiced, O you destroyers of My heritage, because you have grown fat like a heifer in the grass, and bellow like bulls; ¹² your mother shall be greatly confounded; she who bore you shall be ashamed: Behold, the last of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. ¹³ Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: Everyone who goes by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. ¹⁴ Put yourselves in array against Babylon on every side: All you who bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: For she has sinned against the LORD. ¹⁵ Shout against her from every side: She has given her hand: Her foundations have fallen, her walls are thrown down: For it is the vengeance of the LORD: Take vengeance on her; as she has done, do to her. ¹⁶ Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him who handles the sickle in the time of harvest: For fear of the oppressing sword everyone shall turn to his people, and everyone shall flee to his own land. ¹⁷ Israel is as scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: First the king of Assyria has devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones." ¹⁸ Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; "Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria. ¹⁹ And I will bring Israel to his habitation again, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon Mount Ephraim and Gilead. ²⁰ In those days, and at that time", said the LORD, "the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: For I will pardon them whom I preserve. ²¹ Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: Waste and utterly destroy after them", said the LORD, "and do according to all that I have commanded you. ²² A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. ²³ How the hammer of the whole earth is cut asunder and broken! How Babylon has become a desolation among the nations! ²⁴ I have laid a snare for you, and you are also taken, O Babylon, and you were not aware: You are found, and also caught, because you have strived against the LORD. ²⁵ The LORD has opened His armory, and has brought forth the weapons of His indignation: For this is the work of the Lord GOD of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans. ²⁶ Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: Cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: Let nothing be left of her. ²⁷ Slay all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter: Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their visitation. ²⁸ The voice of those who flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of His temple. ²⁹ Call together the archers against Babylon: All you who bend the bow, camp against it all around; let none of them escape: Recompense her according to her work; according to all that she has done, do to her: For she has been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel. ³⁰ Therefore her young men shall fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day", said the LORD. ³¹ "Behold, I am against you, O you most proud", said the Lord GOD of hosts: "for your day has come, the time that I will visit you. ³² And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: And I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all around him." ³³ Thus says the LORD of hosts; "The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: And all who took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go. ³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is His name: He shall thoroughly plead their cause, that He may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. ³⁵ A sword is upon the Chaldeans", said the LORD, "and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. ³⁶ A sword is upon the liars; and they shall become fools: A sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed. ³⁷ A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people who are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: A sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed. ³⁸ A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: For it is the land of graven images, and they are insane with their idols. ³⁹ Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell in it: And it shall no longer be inhabited forever; neither shall it be dwelled in from generation to generation. ⁴⁰ As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbor cities", said the LORD; "so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell in it. ⁴¹ Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the borders of the earth. ⁴² They shall hold the bow and the lance: They are cruel, and will not show mercy: Their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride on horses, everyone put in array like a man to the battle, against you O daughter of Babylon. ⁴³ The king of Babylon has heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: Anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail. ⁴⁴ Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan to the habitation of the strong: But I will make them suddenly run away from her: And who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? For who is like Me? And who will appoint Me the time? And who is that shepherd who will stand before Me?" ⁴⁵ Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that He has taken against Babylon; and His purposes, that He has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: Surely He shall make their habitation desolate with them. ⁴⁶ At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.

²¹ To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. ²² The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.

²⁷ Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

¹⁷ The sons of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram, and Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Meshech. ¹⁸ And Arphaxad begat Shelah, and Shelah begat Eber. ¹⁹ And to Eber were born two sons: The name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: And his brother's name was Joktan. ²⁰ And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah, ²¹ hadoram also, and Uzal, and Diklah, ²² and Ebal, and Abimael, and Sheba, ²³ and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan. ²⁴ Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah, ²⁵ eber, Peleg, Reu, ²⁶ serug, Nahor, Terah, ²⁷ abram; the same is Abraham.

³⁴ who was the son of Jacob, who was the son of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham, who was the son of Terah, who was the son of Nachor, ³⁵ who was the son of Saruch, who was the son of Ragau, who was the son of Phalek, who was the son of Heber, who was the son of Sala, ³⁶ who was the son of Cainan, who was the son of Arphaxad, who was the son of Shem, who was the son of Noah, who was the son of Lamech,

²⁸ And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: And have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."

⁴ And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: And he begat sons and daughters: ⁵ And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: And he died. ⁶ And Seth lived a hundred and five years, and begat Enos: ⁷ And after Seth begat Enos, he lived eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: ⁸ And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: And he died. ⁹ And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: ¹⁰ And after Enos begat Cainan, he lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: ¹¹ And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: And he died. ¹² And Cainan lived seventy years and begat Mahalaleel: ¹³ And after Cainan begat Mahalaleel, he lived eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: ¹⁴ And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: And he died. ¹⁵ And Mahalaleel lived sixty-five years, and begat Jared: ¹⁶ And after Mahalaleel begat Jared, he lived eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: ¹⁷ And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred and ninety-five years: And he died. ¹⁸ And Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and he begat Enoch: ¹⁹ And after Jared begat Enoch, he lived eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: ²⁰ And all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years: And he died. ²¹ And Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begat Methuselah: ²² And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: ²³ And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years: ²⁴ And Enoch walked with God: And he was not; for God took him. ²⁵ And Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begat Lamech. ²⁶ And after Methuselah begat Lamech, he lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and begat sons and daughters: ²⁷ And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years: And he died. ²⁸ And Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and begat a son: ²⁹ And he called his name Noah, saying, "This one shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed." ³⁰ And after Lamech begat Noah, he lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and begat sons and daughters: ³¹ And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years: And he died. ³² And Noah was five hundred years old: And Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

⁷ And you, be fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply in it."

³ Lo, children are a heritage of the LORD: And the fruit of the womb is his reward. ⁴ As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

³ Your wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of your house: Your children like olive plants all around your table. ⁴ Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD.

¹² That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the likeness of a palace:

³⁶ who was the son of Cainan, who was the son of Arphaxad, who was the son of Shem, who was the son of Noah, who was the son of Lamech,

²¹ To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born.

²⁴ And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish forever.

¹⁹ And to Eber were born two sons: The name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: And his brother's name was Joktan.

³⁵ who was the son of Saruch, who was the son of Ragau, who was the son of Phalek, who was the son of Heber, who was the son of Sala,

² And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelled on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: And they served other gods.

³⁴ who was the son of Jacob, who was the son of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham, who was the son of Terah, who was the son of Nachor,

⁴ So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken to him; and Lot went with him: And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed out of Haran. ⁵ And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and they did come into the land of Canaan.

²⁰ And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, "Behold, Milcah, she has also born children to your brother Nahor; ²¹ Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, ²² and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. ²³ And Bethuel begat Rebekah: These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. ²⁴ And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.

⁴ And Jacob said to them, "My brethren, where are you from?" And they said, "We are from Haran." ⁵ And he said to them, "Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know him."

³¹ And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with him from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran, and dwelled there.

⁴ So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken to him; and Lot went with him: And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed out of Haran.

¹ And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south. ² And Abram was very rich in domestic beasts, in silver, and in gold. ³ And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai; ⁴ to the place of the altar, which he had made there during his first stay: And there Abram called on the name of the LORD. ⁵ And Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. ⁶ And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: For their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. ⁷ And there was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's domestic beasts and the herdsmen of Lot's domestic beasts: And the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled in the land at that time. ⁸ And Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife, I implore you, between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. ⁹ Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself, I implore you, from me: If you will take the left hand side, then I will go to the right; or if you depart to the right hand side, then I will go to the left." ¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Jordan river, that it was well watered everywhere, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as you come to Zoar. ¹¹ Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan river; and Lot journeyed east: And they separated themselves from each other.

¹² And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelled in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

¹ And there came two angels to Sodom at sunset; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: And Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; ² and he said, "Behold now, my lords, turn in, I implore you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early, and go on your way." And they said, "No; but we will abide in the street all night." ³ And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in to him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. ⁴ But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed around the house, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: ⁵ And they called to Lot, and said to him, "Where are the men which came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may know them." ⁶ And Lot went out at the door to them, and shut the door after him, ⁷ and said, "I implore you, brethren, do not conduct yourselves so wickedly. ⁸ Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known a man; let me, I implore you, bring them out to you, and you do to them as is good in your eyes: Only do nothing to these men; for such shelter they came under the shadow of my roof." ⁹ And they said, "Stand back." And they said again, "This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will necessarily be a judge: Now we will deal worse with you, than with them." And they pressed intensely upon the man, even Lot, and came near to breaking the door. ¹⁰ But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. ¹¹ And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: So that they wearied themselves to find the door. ¹² And the men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone here beside yourselves? Son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whatever you have in the city, bring them out of this place: ¹³ For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them has waxed great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD has sent us to destroy it." ¹⁴ And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, which married his daughters, and said, "Rise up, get out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city." But he seemed as one that mimicks in derision to his sons-in-law. ¹⁵ And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, "Arise, take your wife, and your two daughters, which are here; lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city." ¹⁶ And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful to him: And they brought him forth, and set him outside the city. ¹⁷ And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, "Escape for your life; do not look behind you, neither stay anywhere in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed." ¹⁸ And Lot said to them, "Oh, not so, my Lord: ¹⁹ Behold now, your servant has found grace in your sight, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have shown to me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: ²⁰ Behold now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape to that place, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. ²¹ And he said to him, "See, I have accepted you concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for which you have spoken. ²² Make haste, escape to that city; for I cannot do anything until you have come to that place." Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. ²³ The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. ²⁴ Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; ²⁵ and he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. ²⁶ But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. ²⁷ And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: ²⁸ And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. ²⁹ And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelled.

⁷ and delivered just Lot, who was vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

⁷ And he said to him, "I am the LORD that brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it."

⁷ You are the LORD the God, who did choose Abram, and brought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldeans, and gave him the name of Abraham;

² And he said, "Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; the God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran, ³ and said to him, 'Get out of your country, and from your kindred, and come into the land which I shall show you.' ⁴ Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charran: And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him into this land, in which you now dwell.

¹⁵ And God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.

¹² And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

²⁰ And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, "Behold, Milcah, she has also born children to your brother Nahor;

¹⁵ And it came to pass, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

² And Abram said, "Lord GOD, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?" ³ And Abram said, "Behold, You have given no seed to me: And lo, one born in my house is my heir."

¹ Now Sarai Abram's wife bore him no children: And she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. ² And Sarai said to Abram, "Behold now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing: I implore you, go in to my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her." And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

¹¹ Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. ¹² Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, "After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?"

¹ And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as He had spoken. ² For Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

²¹ And Isaac entreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: And the LORD was entreated by way of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

³¹ And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, He opened her womb: But Rachel was barren.

¹ And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said to Jacob, "Give me children, or else I die." ² And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: And he said, "Am I in God's stead, Who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?"

² And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and did not bear.

² And he had two wives, the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah: And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

⁹ He makes the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise the LORD.

⁷ Yet they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they were both now well advanced in years.

³⁶ And behold, your cousin Elisabeth has also conceived a son in her old age: And this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

¹⁹ And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as you come to Gerar, to Gaza; as you go, to Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even to Lasha.

²⁶ And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran. ²⁷ Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. ²⁸ And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

³² And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: And Terah died in Haran.

¹⁰ And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: And he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.

⁴³ Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; arise, flee to Haran, to my brother Laban;

² And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelled on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: And they served other gods. ³ And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

⁸ By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out into a place which he should afterwards receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
