¹ There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men: ² A man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honor, so that he wants nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but a stranger eats it: This is vanity, and it is an evil disease. ³ If a man beget a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, and his soul is not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, "that an untimely birth is better than he. ⁴ For he comes in with vanity, and departs in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness. ⁵ Moreover he has not seen the sun, nor known anything: This one has more rest than the other. ⁶ Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet he has seen no good: Do not all go to one place? ⁷ All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled. ⁸ For what has the wise more than the fool? What does the poor have, who knows how to walk before the living? ⁹ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: This also is vanity and vexation of spirit. ¹⁰ That which has been is named already, and it is known that he is man: Neither may he contend with Him who is mightier than he. ¹¹ Seeing there are many things that increase vanity, how is man the better? ¹² For who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? For who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

¹³ There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners of them to their hurt.

⁷ For the LORD your God brings you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; ⁸ A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil, and honey; ⁹ A land in which you shall eat bread without scarceness, you shall not lack anything in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig brass. ¹⁰ When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which he has given you.

³³ The fruit of your land, and all your labors, shall a nation which you know not eat up; and you shall be only oppressed and crushed always:

⁴³ The stranger that is within you shall get up above you very high; and you shall come down very low.

¹⁰ When you go, you shall come to a people secure, and to a large land: For God has given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of anything that is in the earth.

¹³ And I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches, and honor: So that there shall not be any among the kings like to you all your days.

²⁵ And the LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

²⁸ And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honor: And Solomon his son reigned in his stead.

¹¹ And God said to Solomon, "Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches, wealth, or honor, nor the life of your enemies, neither yet have asked long life; but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge my people, over whom I have made you king:

⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God on them. ¹⁰ Their bull engenders, and fails not; their cow calves, and casts not her calf. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. ¹² They take the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ. ¹³ They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. ¹⁴ Therefore they say to God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of your ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray to him?

¹⁴ From men which are Your hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly You fill with Your hidden treasure: They are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

⁶ Surely every man walks in a vain show: Surely they are disquieted in vain: He heaps up riches, and does not know who shall gather them.

⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness: They have more than heart could wish.

⁴ I made great works for myself; I built myself houses; I planted myself vineyards: ⁵ I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits: ⁶ I made myself pools of water, to water with them the wood that brings forth trees: ⁷ I got myself servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of large and small domestic beasts above all that were in Jerusalem before me: ⁸ I also gathered for myself silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I got myself men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and of all sorts. ⁹ So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: Also my wisdom remained with me. ¹⁰ And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them, I did not withhold my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labor: And this was my portion of all my labor.

⁴ Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

⁸ There is one alone, and there is not a second; yes, he has neither child nor brother: Yet there is no end of all his labor; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither has he said, "For whom do I labor, and bereave my soul of good?" This also is vanity, yes, it is a sore travail.

¹⁶ And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: And what profit does he have who has labored for the wind?

¹⁹ Also every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

² Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.

¹⁸ O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor:

⁹ Strangers have devoured his strength, and he does not know it: Yes, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knows it not.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have a great many goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry." ' ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your soul shall be required of you: Then whose shall those things be, which you have provided?'

⁵ And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, "Who are those with you?" And he said, "The children which God has graciously given your servant."

⁹ And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years: Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and I have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage."

²⁰ And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, "The LORD give you seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD." And they went to their own home. ²¹ And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and she bore three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

²¹ And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and three score concubines; and begat twenty and eight sons, and three score daughters).

¹¹ And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things in which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king's wrath was pacified.

¹⁴ And the king commanded it to be so done: And the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman's ten sons. ¹⁵ For the Jews that were in Shushan also gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the prey they did not lay their hands.

¹⁶ Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

⁸ As a snail which melts, let every one of them pass away: Like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

⁴ As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. ⁵ Happy is the man that has his quiver full of them: They shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

⁶ Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

³ Yes, better than both is he, who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

¹⁷ He also eats in darkness all his days, and he has much sorrow and wrath with his sickness. ¹⁸ Behold that which I have seen: It is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor that he toils under the sun all the days of his life, which God gives him: For it is his portion. ¹⁹ Also every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

¹⁹ But you are cast out of your grave like an abominable branch, and as the clothing of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcass trodden under feet. ²⁰ You shall not be joined with them in burial, because you have destroyed your land, and slain your people: The seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.

² And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshiped: They shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung on the face of the earth.

¹⁹ He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

³⁰ Therefore thus says the LORD of Jehoiakim king of Judah; "He shall have none to sit on the throne of David: And his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.

²⁴ The Son of Man goes as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following, let their name be blotted out.

¹⁰ Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from my eyes. ¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly? ¹² Why did the knees prevent me? Or why the breasts that I should suck? ¹³ For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: Then had I been at rest,

¹ Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

⁷ For we are consumed by Your anger, and by Your wrath we are troubled. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in Your wrath: We spend our years as a tale that is told.

⁵ And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: And he died.

²³ And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years: ²⁴ And Enoch walked with God: And he was not; for God took him.

²¹ and said, "Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

⁷ O remember that my life is wind: My eye shall no more see good.

²³ For I know that you will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.

⁶ There are many that say, "Who will show us any good?" LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us. ⁷ You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their grain and their wine increased.

¹² What man is he that desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?

²⁰ All go to one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

³ If a man beget a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, and his soul is not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, "that an untimely birth is better than he.

⁷ Then the dust shall return to the earth as it was: And the spirit shall return to God who gave it.

²⁰ There shall no longer be an infant who lives but a few days there, nor an old man who has not filled his days: For the child shall die a hundred years old; but the sinner being a hundred years old shall be accursed.

²² They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: For as the days of a tree are the days of My people, and My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.

⁶ For he shall be like the shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land that is not inhabited.

²⁷ And as it is appointed to men once to die, but after this the judgment:

¹⁷ And to Adam He said, "Because you have hearkened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': Cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow you shall eat of it all the days of your life; ¹⁸ it shall also bring forth thorns and thistles to you; and you shall eat the herb of the field; ¹⁹ in the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground; for out of it you were taken: For dust you are, and to dust you shall return."

²⁶ He that labors labors for himself; for his mouth craves it of him.

¹⁰ He that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loves abundance with increase: This also is vanity.

²⁵ Therefore I say to you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor even for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have a great many goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry." '

²⁷ Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man shall give to you: For God the Father has sealed Him."

⁶ But godliness with contentment is great gain. ⁷ For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. ⁸ And having food and clothing, let us be content with these.

¹ And when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, "I am the Almighty God; walk before Me, and be perfect.

² I will behave wisely myself in a perfect way. O when will You come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.

⁹ I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

¹ Better is the poor that walks in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

¹⁴ The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walks in darkness: And I myself also perceived that one event happens to them all. ¹⁵ Then I said in my heart, "As it happens to the fool, so it happens even to me; and why then was I more wise?" Then I said in my heart, "This also is vanity." ¹⁶ For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool forever; seeing that which now is shall all be forgotten in the days to come. And how does the wise man die? As the fool.

¹¹ When goods increase, those that eat them are increased: And what good is there to the owners of them, except the beholding of them with their eyes?

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

¹⁷ Charge those that are rich in this world, that they are not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

⁷ If my step has turned out of the way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any blot has stuck to my hands;

¹⁵ The horse-leach has two daughters, crying, 'Give, give.' There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things do not say, 'It is enough': ¹⁶ The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire are they which do not say, 'It is enough.'

² "Vanity of vanities", says the Preacher, "Vanity of vanities; all is vanity."

¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹¹ Then I looked on all the works that my hands had worked, and on the labor that I had labored to do: And behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

²² For what has man from all his labor, and from the vexation of his heart, in which he has labored under the sun? ²³ For all his days are sorrows, and his labor grief; yes, his heart does not take rest in the night. This also is vanity. ²⁴ There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

¹² I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. ¹³ And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God.

¹⁸ Behold that which I have seen: It is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor that he toils under the sun all the days of his life, which God gives him: For it is his portion.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth; and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes: But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

²⁰ "For from old times I have broken your yoke, and burst your bands; and you said, 'I will not transgress'; when on every high hill and under every green tree you wander, playing the harlot.

⁹ And the LORD God called to Adam, and said to him, "Where are you?"

³ If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand. ⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: Who has hardened himself against him, and has prospered?

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.

¹ Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. ² He comes forth like a flower, and is cut down: He flees also as a shadow, and continues not. ³ And does you open your eyes upon such an one, and bring me into judgment with you? ⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.

¹³ Why do you strive against him? For he gives not account of any of his matters.

² shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? He that reproves God, let him answer it.

⁶ I have said, "You are gods; and all of you are children of the Most High. ⁷ But you shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes."

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

⁹ The thing that has been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: And there is no new thing under the sun. ¹⁰ Is there anything of which it may be said, "See, this is new"? It has already been since old times, which were before us. ¹¹ There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those who shall come after.

¹⁵ That which has been is now; and that which is to be has already been; and God requires an account of that which is past.

⁹ Woe to him that strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him who fashions it, 'What are you making?' Or your work, 'He has no handles?' ¹⁰ Woe to him that said to his father, 'What are you begetting?' or to the woman, 'What have you brought forth?'

¹⁹ Behold, he shall come up from the swelling of Jordan like a lion against the habitation of the strong: But I will suddenly make him run away from her: And who is a chosen man, whom I may appoint over her? For who is like me? And who will appoint Me the time? And who is that shepherd who will stand before Me?

¹⁹ Then you will say to me, "Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?" ²⁰ No rather, O man, who are you that replies against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, "Why have you made me like this?"

⁶ Therefore pride compasses them about as a chain; violence covers them as a garment.

⁶ The wind goes toward the south, and about-turns to the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to its circuits. ⁷ All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; to the place from where the rivers come, there they return again. ⁸ All things are full of labor; man cannot utter it: The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. ⁹ The thing that has been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: And there is no new thing under the sun.

¹⁷ And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit. ¹⁸ For in much wisdom is much grief: And he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.

¹⁹ For that which befalls the sons of men befalls beasts; even one thing befalls them: As the one dies, so dies the other; yes, they all have one breath; so that a man has no preeminence above a beast: For all is vanity.

¹ So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: And behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter. ² Therefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive. ³ Yes, better than both is he, who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun. ⁴ Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹⁶ There is no end of all the people, even of all who have been before them: Those also who come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

⁷ For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also various vanities: But you shall fear God.

¹ "Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: He daily increases lies and desolation; and they make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

¹⁵ For we are strangers before you, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.

⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow):

² He comes forth like a flower, and is cut down: He flees also as a shadow, and continues not.

²¹ His sons come to honor, and he knows it not; and they are brought low, but he perceives it not of them.

⁶ There are many that say, "Who will show us any good?" LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.

⁵ The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup: You maintain my lot.

¹⁵ As for me, I will behold Your face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Your likeness.

⁵ Behold, You have made my days as a hand-breadth; and my age is as nothing before you: Truly every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah. ⁶ Surely every man walks in a vain show: Surely they are disquieted in vain: He heaps up riches, and does not know who shall gather them.

⁴ He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom He loved. Selah.

⁴⁷ Remember how short my time is: Why have You made all men in vain?

¹⁰ The days of our years are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their strength is labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. ¹¹ Who knows the power of Your anger? Even according to Your fear, so is Your wrath. ¹² So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

¹¹ My days are like a shadow that declines; and I am withered like grass.

²³ I am gone like the shadow when it declines: I am tossed up and down as the locust.

⁴ Man is likened to vanity: His days are as a shadow that passes away.

³ I sought in my heart to give myself to wine, yet acquainting my heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, until I might see what was good for the sons of men, what they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

²² So I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: For who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?

⁷ For he does not know that which shall be: For who can tell him when it shall be?

¹³ But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he does not fear before God.

⁶ Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, have now perished; neither do they have a portion anymore in anything that is done under the sun forever.

¹³ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: For this is the whole duty of man.

²⁴ "The LORD is my portion", said my soul; "therefore I will hope in Him." ²⁵ The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. ²⁶ It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. ²⁷ It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

⁸ He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

¹⁴ When in fact you all do not know what shall happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is indeed a vapor, that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.
