³ I ate no pleasant bread, neither did flesh nor wine come into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, until three whole weeks were fulfilled.

²⁴ And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.

²⁰ So that his life abhors bread, and his soul dainty meat.

⁶ Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, and those that dwell in it are desolate: Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left. ⁷ The new wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry hearted do sigh. ⁸ The mirth of tambourine ceases, the noise of those who rejoice ends, the joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to those who drink it. ¹⁰ The city of confusion is broken down: Every house is shut up, that no man may come in. ¹¹ There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

¹⁸ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: Neither were instruments of music brought before him: And his sleep went from him.

⁸ And shall also carry captives into Egypt, their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.

¹¹ Therefore, as much as your treading is upon the poor, and you take burdens of wheat from him: You have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink wine from them.

⁹ Take the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold, all of you: For there is no end of the storehouse and glory proceeding from all the pleasant furnishings.

¹⁷ But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;

²⁷ But I weary my body, and bring it into subjection: Lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
